Picture this:

The year is '89, I'm rocking my acid washed Guess overalls like nobody's business. The lights have dimmed, and Jordan Knight's sweet voice is booming over the speakers. "I'm not the kind of guy who can take a broken heart, so don't ever leeeaave..." I'm like 10 so of course I make way to the snack bar, my bestie in tow. We grab some nachos and wait for the couples skate to end. We were more of the limbo/speed skate crowd.

Man oh man those were the days! My aunt would drop us off at Roller King and leave is with like $10 each. We'd skate our little hearts out and giggle at the couples who started longingly at each other while skating under those multi-colored disco ball lights. *sigh* ...

Random story: The year the rink closed my daughter was invited by her bestie and the bestie's cousin to go skating here. The kids were supervised by the bestie's mom and uncle. Fast forward a few years, and the bestie's Uncle is now my Fiance. LOL ... I guess he had a thing for 'Emma's mom'. ;) For that alone I give 5 stars. Thanks for the trip down memory lane ladies!

I was going to send a message to Yelp to take Roller King off the site but...it got me thinking of all the great times I (and I'm sure a lot of you) have had ther so...I figured I'd share some key thoughts.

Roller King hasn't existed for years now but...I have a million and one memories at this one and the one that used to be on Oakdale and Floyd.

Ahhhhhhh.....memories. Couples skating...
limbo on the rink floor...
rollos and glo sticks from the vending machine...
nachos from the snack bar...
skate clanking on the tile floors...
carpeted floors, walls and ceilings...
the corner jail...
geez....I miss Roller King.

i was never much good at rollerskating, in fact i spent most of my time here in the arcade blowing through quarters like qualudes at an andy warhol exhibit. i do remember my hands being covered in radioactive-looking melted cheese flavored sauce, though.
