This is it - the original Roll 'n Roaster. A family owned Brooklyn institution featuring roast beef on a white bun. While this is so NOT my kind of food - it was a staple takeout (or eat in - although it is NOT fancy) joint when I lived nearby.
You can even get Dom Perignon on the menu (for real - though I have Never seen ANYONE order that!)
The sides are very good - better than at chains. Bear in mind you will have to wait longer for your food here than at a typical fast food joint - they cook many items to order. (I'd say prepare to wait 10-12 minutes.)
Every time I'm on the Belt and I see exit 8 I am constantly compelled to pull off the parkway and head over to Emmons Ave to get me some more of Roll-N-Roasters' juicy and delicious roast beef sandwiches...with melted cheese of course.
Pretty much everything I've had on the menu is amazing and completely craveable from their turkey sandwiches, to their cheezburgers (which are unreal), the western cheezburger which includes mouthwatering giant onion rings and BBQ sauce on the burger...to die for. I also really like their chicken tenders, and cheezy fries, but my absolute favorite side dish are their addictive corn fritters which are good enough to make you want to sell your soul to the devil for more!
Best of all, you can wash it all down with wine or ice cold beers. My favorite are their tangy fresh made lemonades. Roll-N-Roaster also features desserts like baked apple pies and New York cheesecake. I haven't had any of their desserts but they always look so good.
This place is sinful and wrong from many caloric standpoints but it's a really really good kind of wrong.
This is THE place to pig out.
Do I even need to say it? Well just in case you missed it the roast beef sandwiches are THE BEST. Once I had it on a bun that came straight out of the oven (still hot and extremely fluffy, and a bit sweet) and I don't think any other sandwich can compare to that. So, I give 5 stars to the famous roast beef.
From what I see there has been no mention of the mashed potatoes or sweet potatoes. The mashed potatoes are amazing and of course, drowned in gravy. The sweet potato makes you feel a little less guilty for eating every unhealthy item on your tray. And not to mention their sweet potatoes are oh so yummy. And of course, the french fries are soo delicious.
I've also had their chicken fingers before, which are no exception to being delicious. However, I've never had their burgers but my boyfriend usually gets one of them.
My only complaint is that it is a bit pricey. Not that this will stop me from going back.
The staff is friendly and will take care of anything you need without a problem.
The food is great whether you eat it at the restaurant or pick it up to bring it home. You just can't go wrong.
I did not order the roast beef sandwich, but I should have. I ordered the chicken one and the bread was soggy. While there wasn't much going for the sandwich, I did enjoy the lemonade. The cheese fries were okay but not the best I've had. If I ever go back, I will order something different.
This is the best fast food ever, hands down. C'mon it's Zagat-rated "cheez" fries. I have been going here for 18 years, and I have loved it every single time.
I love the corn fritters, the cheez fries, roast beef, onion rings, mozzarella sticks, chicken fingers, fried shrimp, iced tea and orangeade. Also, it is always clean and full of old school Brooklyn character.
To Mr. Max D: Sheepshead Bay is a wonderful neighborhood. Stop being so bitter.
Some friends took me an the fam here after visiting the NY Aquarium. Had no idea what i was getting into. The place has such an awesome retro vibe. At first i was set on getting a cheese burger but the four people in front me all ordered a plethora of roast beef sandwiches and i followed suit. I also order the sweet potato fries. They were both awesome especially the fries. Our friends gave me one of their lemonades which was unexpectedly delicious. I would highly recommend a roll n roast followed by a trip to Roll n Roaster.
Overrated and poor quality. The roast beef is not what it was when R&R opened their doors 40 years ago. This truly is a disappointment : (
The food is awful . Dont go out of your way to this deteriorated section of brooklyn. Its all Russian mafia in this part of Bklyn and you can feel the bad vibe. Sheepshead Bay is now Odessa filled with low life peasant Russians/Ukrainians and its not worth the trip.
Such good 'ol fashioned eatery! The food is wonderful comfort food and the atmosphere is still that from when it first opened... with the original classic commercials for the eatery. And, it's across from the bay!
Best burgers ever! Hands down! Cheese burger and cheese fries!! I've been going here forever!
My dad (God rest is soul) use to take my sister and I here as kid's growing up and we always loved it. Now as an adult I still go back!
Easily one of Brooklyn's landmark Restaurants. Well known and awesomely terrific Hot Roast beef Sandwich, terrific chicken fingers, large perfectly fried cheese fries, wash it all down with a fresh lemonade and finish it off with some Cheese cake. Never expect to leave this place still hungry. Chicken Sandwich and chicken wings are also some local favorites. The loaded Sweet Potato is amazing, thing is the size of a small chihuahua and evenly cooked.
The place looks like a old school Mcdonalds from the outside. It truly attracts a motley crew of local degenerates along with people who wouldnt usually step foot in brooklyn but get off the Knapp St exit on the belt Pkwy to get a taste of Brooklyn's best fast food restaurants.
Rather spend 16-20 bucks here and eat like a king than go to the river cafe spend 200-300 for two people and leave hungry.
Its also arguable where u get a better view. River cafe has NYC's legendary skyline and historic bridges, roll N roaster has 17 year old hot russian jailbait in tight dresses who probably will do just about anything if you offer them a bong hit and half a six pack.
Score one for Roll N Roaster!
Just Awesome , CHEESE Everything!!!
Never knew about this place until my friends told me about it. Told me to try the roast beef sandwich so I got that and CHEESED it!!! I got some fries and i CHEESED that as well. Everything is better with CHEEESE!!!!!! .
I thought the food was great and I didn't realize there were beer and wine on the menu. A closer look at it and I noticed the Beer and Wine were Cheaper than the MilkShake!!!!! How Cool is that ?!? Just walking into the restaurant, I felt that it held a lot of history and theres a reason why this place is still opened and why they still get soo much business now. Definitely give this place a visit if your in brooklyn Sheepshead bay area.
I don't know why everybody is commenting about the "cheez". I wasn't a fan. I was, however, a fan of everything else about my experience there.
I loved those fries! I had never had circle shaped fries before, so this was a new concept for me. I was happily suprised when my number was called. I thought the bun my cheeseburger came on was delicious, as well as the burger itself. It wasn't greasy and the meat tasted like very good quality. I need to try the roast beef.....
Came here as a teenager way back when and remembered the food being pretty amazing (maybe because I was drunk/high) but I finally stopped by again with a local friend and had a pretty good meal. I wasn't really in the mood for there famous roast beef sandwich, so I stuck with a cheeseburger and cheese fries with some lemonade. The food was good, my mom makes the same type of fries at home, minus the cheese and the cheeseburger was a little bit better than average. Everything thing came out hot and fresh though. We went there for lunch on a Sunday so the wait was about 10 minutes for our food. The place is clean though, parking is easy and the food is pretty damn good, so I can't complain that much.
I found this place on yelp. My boyfriend and I were looking for a good burger and cheese fry place in Brooklyn and this place came highly recommended. My BF had the cheese burger, cheese fries, and a root-beer float. I was very impressed with the flavor, however, was disappointed that they did not offer tomatoes and lettuce. The fries look like potato chips, yet covered in cheesy goodness. The Roast Beef was deli-sh. I first had it medium, but was unimpressed. I took it back and got it medium rare at man was it good! My only complaint was the Asian guy behind the counter. When we asked for a little more root-beer in our float he responded in a very rude manor that he can not do so, but could add water. Who the hell adds water to ice cream? All in all a Brooklyn institution and would recommend in the future.
LOVEEE IT!
Their food is just amazing. I do not know any fast food place that makes real burgers like Rolling. They also make real onion rings unlike fake burger king rings!
They also have the best homemade ice tea ever. It is not overly sweet like some places that can take away the flavor of your food.
The only thing that I would possibly complain about is the waiting time. Each order will take about 10 minutes because there are always so many people ordering.
But... HEECKKK YEAHHH ILL GO BACK!
Roll n Roaster is a great Burger/Roast Beef joint. Parking can be a pain on the weekends but well worth the hassle. You can get anything on the menu with Cheez on it. :) I like the Cheez Burger, Cheez Fries and OrangeAde.
Roast Beef-n-Cheese
French Fries-n-Cheese
Onion Rings-n-Cheese
Beer-n-Cheese...wait a minute....
Yummy!!!!
I always get their cheez fries and grilled chicken with cheez. The lemonade is perfect to wash it all down with. Love this place! I would consider this the closest thing to fast food that I would ever eat. :)
I'm drooling just thinking of R&R. Food is great.. Roast beef sandwich w/ onion rings and cheese on it.. mmmmm mmmmmm I order the same thing every time I go.. the orangeade is GREAT.
Roll-N-Roaster is practically my Post-Mets Game or Post-Work food stop. There use to be one on Staten Island but that disappeared many years ago. I knew that the original Brooklyn one still existed, but I never had a chance to get out there until after a Mets' game in May.
After that game, I gorged myself with so much food that I learned my lesson on what to buy from then on it. That is a lesson all Roll-N-Roaster new comers must learn, you can't gorge yourself that first time. My friend who recently went this past weekend ate shrimp, a roast beef sandwich, cheese fries with gravy, and a Manhattan clam chowder. He lost feeling in his left arm 20 minutes later after completing this meal.
As stated above, this menu here is filled with everything that you shouldn't eat in large quantities. Roast beef and turkey sandwiches, hamburgers, cheeseburgers, pizza, shrimp, clam chowder, fries, onion rings, mozzarella sticks, and other artery stuffing goodies. You can have "CHEEZ" with anything too! They also have dessert items too, at the end of that menu it says "Top Anything With Ice Cream"...bad idea - that is how people die!
When you finally pick out what you crave and order, you'd be given a number - you wait a bit, they call it out DMV style, and you pick it up with a smile across your face. It could take a few minutes depending on what you order because some items are made to order. Very few things here sit around under heating lamps which is good, even though it isn't healthy either way you slice it!
My order of choice is the Western Burger (Onion Rings & BBQ sauce on a burger), Roast Beef-N-Cheez, and a lemonade. For $14 this hits the spot. So delicious. The lemonade is just thirst quenching without the gassy problems that soda bring to your stomach, this gives you more room to go for another roast beef sandwich.
If you venture to Roll-N-Roaster on your birthday you can win as much as $25 in Roll-N-Roaster credit! This is so you can eat more and decrease your life expectancy on each visit. Such a great idea!
Roll-N-Roaster is a very good place especially if you want to take decades off your life! If you love Arby's then you'd definitely enjoy Roll-N-Roaster! This is one of the only places that you can eat "chicken, roast beef, and a pizza" all in one sitting!
It is open until 3AM on Friday + Saturday, and 1AM Sun - Thursday.
Roll-N-Roaster represents one of the many places where its novelty has far exceeded food quality. It's roast beef placed upon a kaiser roll with a dab of Cheez Wiz to add to an otherwise plain, boring, flavorless roast beef sandwich. This place just doesn't excite any of your senses in any way; the decor is drab, the staff are lined with pre-pubescent teenagers, and quite overrated even for a fast food place. Not bad, but not amazing either.
You can easily shrug this off as one of your typical fast food places. If you're around, go and have a quick bite. If you're out of the way, just stop at a McDonald's or a Burger King and you will be equally satisfied.
Personally, I cannot really eat here. My sister and I affectionately and not-so-affectionately refer to this place as Roll-n-Hos. Why? Because we both knew people who were just that. And I'm pretty sure the staff all sleep with each other. Over the roast beef buns. Yick.
Roll-n-Roaster has been in the area for like forever and a day. It's one of those places that seem to exist because it's pretty much a local landmark, not for the terrific food. Not that the food is bad. It's ok. (Yes, I've had it when I was younger.) But definitely not worth making the trek down to Emmons Ave unless you're nearby. It's totally the Sheepshead Bay hangout joint of the 80s, 90s and now 00s.
Well, there you have it, the story of my childhood: Roll-N-Roaster. I've seen all kinds of wacky things come and go in this place. Enormous helium tanks for balloons. Waitresses on roller skates. Free popcorn while you wait. The commercials ("We're not so fast, Roll-N-Roaster!"). The Staten Island restaurant, RIP. The birthday wheel. Smile, you're on Roll-N-Camera! Russians.
And this place still keeps my happy. One roast beef, extra gravy, one fries w. cheese, one lemonade. Or one steak sandwich, medium, one corn fritters, one vanilla shake. Or just chicken fingers.
Plus, it's always open late. I'm a sinner, because I'm overdue for a visit, but it'll happen soon.
Okay I'm a bit sick of their roast beef sandwiches now. I don't know if it's just me, but I feel like roast beef sandwiches should be FULLY cooked and not red, so I've been steering clear of them now. They do have great sweet potato fries and I've finally had their lemonade which is AMAZING! LOVE their lemonade!

The original roll and roaster. I usually come here late night and I must say, even late night… Read more »
Memories.
Growing up in Brooklyn in the 80's. First being introduced to RnR by my parents at a very young age. During my teen years me and the fellas would grab a sandwich, cheese fries and chicken tenders after a night out and we never got sick of it. Retutning to Brooklyn recently on a trip I returned with my girlfriend. I told her all about the juicy sandwiches . I am so happy to say they haven't changed a bit. She can't wait to get back to Sheepshead Bay to have another and neither can I.
Their lines are ridiculous sometimes but the food is really good. You order it, and bam, they make it for you right then and there.
The greasy jewel of Sheepshead Bay, a decent alternative to your run of the mill chain burger joint, Roll-N-Roaster boasts a variety of options for the urban palate. Branching out further than just its surprisingly ordinary roast beef (its signature bite), RnR tackles burgers (mediocre at best, often dry or far too rare, rarely a middle ground), chicken fingers (a delicious crispy outside that hugs close to the blandness), and... strangely... pizza. You would never think it, but it's not really that bad. It's a step up from frozen store-boughts and a few steps down from the best you'll get out of NYC.
If I'm going to RnR, I'm going for the cheese fries because Nathan's is just not worth it. I might opt for corn fritters, which are terrible-for-you bite size extramarital affairs. It's like a corn rainbow in my mouth. A little quicker and a little cheaper than the Applebee's or TGI Friday's not so far away, RnR has some awesome side dishes. Its downfall really can be seen in its less-than-sparkly sandwiches (which really should be what they're concentrating on).
Despite that, it's open late and it's usually tastier than Mickey Dees or BK.
If you're looking for nutritous, look elsewhere. If you're looking for decor, look elsewhere. If you're looking for comfort food, or if you're drunk at 2am, look no further.
A couple of years ago on the Fourth of July, my best friend and I had gotten a little festive and were stumbling around the Sheepshead Bay pier, as we are wont to do. It was 2am and we were in need of what Taco Bell has coined "fourthmeal." There was no Taco Bell, but there was Roll-N-Roaster--magnificently open and hopping.
My recommendation: anything with "cheez." It's all good, from the roast beef to the burgers on big tasty kaiser rolls. And they actually make a mean lemonade. Despite the fact that I haven't moved past these few staple items in the 20+ years I've been eating at R-N-R, I can assure you that the menu has a surprisingly wide selection.
But to be honest, I can't really be critical of Roll-N-Roaster, since I was raised on it. I knew their waffle cheez fries intimately before I ever knew how to ride a bike.
Five stars for nostalgia alone.
A Brooklyn classic...melted cheese on everything!
My favorites at this place include the roast beef sandwich with gravy and melted american cheese, the fries with melted cheese and the chocolate fudge blackout cake with melted...nah no cheese on this one. It is a fast food style joint but is full of deliciously "bad for you" food.
YUMMY!!! I love this place. I got a cheeseburger, cheez fries, onion rings & apple pie. It was soo delicious and FILLING! The waiting time is long, but the food is cooked as you order it.
Mouth watering roast beef with melt in your mouth cheese is really all I have to say.
This place is amazing.
Parking is almost impossible and you probably will be waiting a bit to make your order but it's all worth it.
The lemonade is pretty great too.
crowded good chicken wings with hot sauce. order is fresh made to order. expensive. alot of weirdos go there!!
Been there a few times. The roast beef is simply amazing. It was probably the best roast beef sandwich I've ever had and for about 4 bucks, it's completely worth it. The burgers are good, but not great. The fries are really good. They're a round shape which makes an interesting look.
I have to tell you the first time I went I hated it, but this place is worth a second look.
but I would agree that cheesy anything tends to tast great
I went to R n R since I was in HS. The RB sandwish is a MUST. I'm highly recommend you to try it for lunch. At least one time...... and many one time will come.
a step above all other fast food options in the area. I don't get over that end often, but when I do I try to make a point to stop in. Parking is a pain in the butt, but the food's worth it if you're looking for fast food deliciousness.
I LOVE their WINGS!!
They're not the wet buffalo-style kind, they're the crispy/crunchy/juicy kind with hot sauce on the side. R n R has been here since forever, it's like a teen hangout or a quick bite for adults, you can always count on them to be fast and fresh.
Other than their wings, I used to love their fresh lemonade but now I'm loving the sweet (brewed) iced tea, corn fritters are a fave of my sisters, cheez fries never fails, anddd mMMmMm the apple pie - it's perfect, seriously, if you break it down each component of it adds up to a great American pie. Everything else is wack. Puney looking cafeteria size burgers, bland roast beef (the best & nearest would be from John's Deli on Stillwell), thin ass grill chicken (better at Chicken Masters on Ave Z). But I LOoOooVE their WINGS.
It's roast beef. Plain old roast beef. Srsly. That's all it is. No special flavor. If you can't buy a pound of board's head at the deli, or make a roast yourself, then hey go for it. I don't know what to tell you.
Reminds me of those snack bars you see at the beach or pool club. There are separate lines for RB/fries only, and one for the full menu. No matter; your food will come out at some random time, before people who have been waiting, or after someone who just walked in, so better keep your ears open.
Used to have a reputation of either being fresh sliced awesomeness on a bun, or giving you the sh*ts for 2 days afterwards. Thankfully the last time I went, my digestive tract was not disgruntled. No childhood memories flooded into my mind when I took my first bite. Well maybe that one time when I had to use the bathroom 15 minutes later...
If I hear the word 'institution' one more time, you'll likely have to put me in one.
2.5 stars rounded down.
R&R is cheesy all right, but that's what makes it so cool. Free balloons for kids. Clean bathrooms. Delicious fast food. We order cheeseburgers, mozz stick, fries, chicken fingers/wings and of course, lemonades or orangeades. Kids absolutely love this place and so do we. They are very friendly, the whole place is like Brooklyn of the 80's, what a nostalgia.
You have lost your everloving mind if you give this place anything but 5 stars. Nostalgia is in full effect, agreed, nevertheless there really is nothing better than the combo of their roast beef, fries, and a coke. I dated a girl once who came into this place and ordered a salad. She was a Goner (she dumped me...nothing to do with Roll n Roaster). Anyway the food is amazing and just the place itself is great. You relax, put your feet up on the benches, and eat your face off...and then go back for seconds. The place is open until 3 am on the weekends, so it was hungry Crackhead Central, and I love me some hungry Crackheads. Not really the crack crack, but other types...whatver, the point is this place is a true hallmark of Brooklyn food, culture, and flavor. Its been around this long for a reason. So if you are on your way back from somewhere on the Belt Parkway, get off Exit 9 and stop in. Tell em Danny sent ya. They'll have no idea who I am.
