Tripping out the door of my office will land you smack at Rohm's doorstep. As you can imagine, it's become a staple for take-out during late nights slaving over line edits.
Bottom line: The food is somewhere between pretty good and good, and the value for your money is tough to beat in the Flatiron area.
The food is pretty standard Thai fare. I often get the Pad See Ew Sriracha, though it's never spicy enough so I always ask for a side of chili. The veggie dumplings are pretty good - sticky and satisfying, with crunchy garlic bits on top.
I'd definitely recommend this place for lunch with a friend - they have specials for $8-10 that includes soup or salad. Wash it all down with their skillfully balanced Thai iced tea, and you've got yourself a fabulous table service meal for under $15.
Oh, and the ambience isn't bad either. Quiet, dim but not creepily so, and pleasantly decorated.
I don't remember this place being anything spectacular. Just another Thai place with decent expected dishes. Pad Thai, Pad See Ew, all the regulars.
I don't remember this place being anything spectacular, except the portions were a bit bigger than I expected.
I don't remember this place being anything spectacular, except the waitstaff was kinda cute. I think.
I don't remember this place being anything spectacular, except my friend who I dined with, ordered a Heineken without being 21. He was not carded.
I don't remember this place being anything spectacular, except my friend knew the owner of the restaurant.
I don't remember this place being anything spectacular, except I was told the owner went to NYU and is also younger than me.
I don't remember this place being anything spectacular, except it made me think about what I was doing with my life when I was 21.
Came for a birthday with about 10 people - good for groups!
I love places that offer a pleasant experience w/o emptying your wallet. I guess you can find quite a few thai places like that but food, ambiance and service were all lovely here. The dim lighting is esp romantic. :)
I dig it!
I went here with two friends, and we all enjoyed our meals. I got the massaman curry with chicken. It didn't have as many potatoes and peanuts as I'd like, but the flavor was good. I also got the pleasure of trying my friend's Bangkok chicken, which was also wonderfully flavorful. OH, and I forgot to mention that my Thai iced tea was fantastic. Can't forget the iced tea.
The atmosphere is very nice. Kind of like other Thai restaurants I've seen in Manhattan. This one is bigger though, with more space in the back. I also think their menu is particularly extensive. They seem to have more options than some of aforementioned restaurants.
It was a week night at a typical dinner time, and there was no wait for a table of 3.
I had been craving Thai food for five months when I went to Rohm but I'll try not to let that effect my review too much.
Okay so picture this: Two girls wandering the city all day with luggage (well, backpacks) in tow. One considers herself an unofficial New Yorker (me), the other is more of a "stare up at the shiny lights" type. We're trudging down Broadway noncommittally looking for a mythical ramen shop that may or may not be on 2nd and 10th and we happen upon Rohm. A glance at the menu and we are swept into the moody, dark, orchid-scented interior, our bags are removed and placed safely by the coats and we are ready to make some magic under those neat hanging light bulbs.
My vegetarian friend and I went all veggie for the evening so I can't comment on the meat but the tofu was perfectly cooked. We ordered the summer spring rolls to start which were refreshingly minty and delicious. The veggies were so fresh and each of the six pieces had a generous dab of tamarind on top. I'm drooling a little...
The peanut curry was the perfect amount of spicy, especially when washed down with my delicious thai tea in a slim little glass. I've had some bad Thai teas in my day, so I'm always ecstatic to get a good one. We also got the drunken noodle which unfortunately had eggs in it (not stated on the menu) so my poor lacto-vegetarian friend had to do some picking at it, both of us being too timid to send it back. Guess I'm not a New Yorker after all.
The whole thing (app, two entrees, two non-alcoholic drinks) cost about $30 which we thought was a pretty frickin' sweet deal. Especially with the impeccable service and the pleasant interior.
Would it be inappropriate if I said "Rohm Nom Nom?"
This place is the original 2 hour lunch, but not because you want it to be. A friend of mine actually died here last week and we just left him with cash in his hardened fingers. I usually order the check before I order my food.
Ahem. Take my wife, please.
The lunch special is the thing. $8 for some great curries and noodles with a crappy little vegetable soup thrown in. Or you can get a real soup for $5.
Dinner is a bigger deal. Just don't sit where the floor buckles or you'll be on a fault line all night when the waitstaff walk back and forth and back and forth and back and forth all over your peace and quiet.
I just picked up lunch from Rohm, literally their lunch special is HALF the amount that other Thai or Chinese restaurants give you. The plastic container they put the food is literally half the size of what the normal take out containers are. Food is good, but not worth $10 for a lunch! I just can't believe it.
One word, people: dumplings. These seriously might be the best dumplings I've ever had. They come with this chunky garlicky peanut sauce thing dripped on top of them that is just so friggin' good I don't even know what to do myself. I'm not normally this effusive about Thai food, but these dumplings are amazing. I got duck pad see ew, which was perfectly fine, but I'm telling you - dumplings.
Points for the space itself too, a cut above the average NYC Thai joint. And points for a fabulously cheap lunch special as well. 3 courses for $15? You can't beat that with a stick in these troubled times. Thumbs up.
Had their basil chicken for lunch and was unimpressed, kind of salty and lukewarm, but still edible. Service was really friendly and the ambiance is nice for a little thai place. Lots of seating and they had no trouble with our group of 6.
An okay option if you're right there, but I wouldn't go out of my way for it.
There's something silly I must say
About Rohm Thai, and by the way
I've eaten there but twice today.
That's "excessive," some might say.
The décor is nothing outstanding
Though is has a certain Asian ring
To it, so that you might sing
It's praises with mutual understanding.
The choices, a diverse batch,
Allow you to both mix and match.
The diversity is such a catch
I feel inclined to plunder like Edward Thatch*.
The food itself is quite nice,
They'll even customize the spice.
And when I go next, that'll be thrice,
I'm sure to try the pineapple rice.
The service is quick, the bill but slight;
It's hard to resist such delightful bite.
It's never been busy, not even at night.
Or at least it seems that way by my sight.

I was around the area and found the place on iphone yelp. Loved it.. i would never found this place if it wasnt for iphone..
it's a very cute/nice/decent place. perfect for date. price was very reasonable and food was delicious too.
I enjoyed my time there and will be back!
I LOVE this place! It used to be really a hole in the wall place, but the remodeled it last year and it's super cool now. The atmosphere is one of the best for Thai places in the city. It's low lighting with all the candles inset against the exposed brick and concrete walls is very cool.
As for the food, it's also quite tastey. I'm a huge fan of the green curry. The veggies are all so fresh and not overcooked like a lot of places. Nothing worse than soggy eggplant, ech! The Drunken Noodle (pad kee mow) is one of my favorites. The Fried Tofu and the Shrimp Roll are my fave appetizers. The also make a damn good cosmo here. But Tanquery drinks beware, they do not have it at the bar, so you'll have to have Bombay instead. This is totally not an issue for me, but my boyfriend was a little annoyed. They have a very small bar, so the liquor selection is limited. But whatever, I'm not there for the drinks, I'm there for the great atmosphere and the fab food. Go and enjoy!!
The food itself probably only warrants two stars but ambience pushes it up to 3. Music, dim lighting, and candlelight make for a very relaxed atmosphere.
We started with 3 appetizers - dumplings, papaya salad, and a roti-wrapped duck roll. The roll was definitely the best - sort of like an Indian-Thai version of Peking duck. Dumplings were ordinary and the papaya salad lacked tang.
I ordered the tofu & vegetables sauteed "tamarind style" and unfortunately did not enjoy the dish. The tofu was deep fried, something that was not mentioned anywhere in the description. The sweet and sour sauce smelled too strongly of fish sauce, which in itself stinks. The bed of vegetables lying beneath the tofu was cold.
My friends seemed to think their food alright, though no one was blown away. Good location, but definitely just average overall.
This is my new Sunday night dinner spot. Pinapple fried rice with peanut sauce on the side.
Ive been here for lunch before too. It gets VERY crowded. but the lunch specials are such a good deal!!!
but back to Sundays!!... the staff was all young, cool, and most importantly relaxed, which is exactly what sundays are about! Also the music seemed different from the last time i'd been there. When M.I.A. came on, I guessed the younger staff (that seemed like they were running the place) had put it on. And for that reason alone I would have gone back. I cant comment on the food much because I only have the pineapple fried rice... and im going to keep getting it!
Ambience: very date-appropriate, nice decor, flattering lighting.
Service: Excellent. In fact, my rating has been bumped up a star simply b/c of the exceptional service :)
Order:
Basil Fried Rice (basil, onion, bell pepper, chili sauce): it's properly cooked where each grain of rice has been evenly seasoned and separated. You won't get a chunk of rice when you bite into it. Surprisingly, this was my favorite dish (I'm not usually THAT into rice).
Green Curry (fresh chili, coconut milk, bamboo shoot, bell pepper, basil): Watch out, it's REALLY spicy. It might've even given me heartburn the next day, but totally in a good way! Definitely eat this with plenty of rice.
Duck: it's their specialty. Get it with the basil sauce (fresh basil, onion, chili, bell pepper). It's tender, crispy, and best of all BONELESS!
Skip:
Curry Puff
Pad Si Ew
solid thai food. you can't go wrong ordering any of their noodles or sauteed dishes.
the restaurant is really beautiful. it's the perfect small size.
Yum. Yum. YUUUUMMMMM!
I have never had more fresh tasting delivery food than this. It tasted as fresh as if I was right there in the restaurant, not to mention it was so flavorful. The beef in my fried rice was not just beef, it was steak, and it was GOOD. Cooked perfectly and tender, no fat. My soup, though simple was wonderful with crisp fresh vegetables in it.
Rohm is my new favorite Thai in NYC.
Decent service - they cleared our table while eating
nice decor - candles, low lighting, wood paneling
Had the shrimp drunken noodles, tamarind sauteed chicken, summer rolls in peanut sauce for dinner. Overall, decent, but nothing special. The noodles were too soggy and not as flavorful. The tamarind sauteed chicken was interesting with the crispy chicken, but the sauce not so exciting. Again, the summer rolls were supposed to have a hint of tamarind, but fell flat.
The best part was the dessert - fried ice cream. Very solid.
Probably wouldn't go back.
Rohm Thai...you're a little hard to find. I almost didn't notice you were there until I spotted my friend waving frantically at me in front of your steps.
Maybe it was lack of sleep that made me less than observant.
Still, I liked the way you look. You were pretty and cozy and a warm environment. Your bathrooms are very clean and modern, but the wall of mirror was a little freaky. Maybe half a wall would have been less so?
I was unadventurous last night and ordered your Pad Thai (with duck). Although not bad, it wasn't that great. I mean, it was bland, which was at odds with your decor. I have made Pad Thai myself that was better, and although my cooking skills are pretty neat, I would have expected better at a restaurant.
Still, I think you're AOK and I will keep you in mind if I want to enjoy a cozy atmosphere and not worry about my food.
Ok so this place deserves 5 stars taking into account *what you're paying!* It's very reasonable, and more importantly great for groups! I had a bday dinner here and we had a great time (I didn't want people paying an arm & a leg). Nice lighting, alot of space, quiet enough to talk, the food was good, the restaurant staff are pleasant, and I love the desserts (I love icecream & fried banana)...
Rohm is a surprising hidden gem just north of Union Square. The restaurant is located down a small flight of stairs, but eliminates the basement feel with cool, classy decor. The restaurant offers a stylish atmosphere without being overdone.
The food is simple, not very greasy, and packed with flavor. The chicken and shrimp dumplings are massive. You receive 4 of these large, bulbous noodles wrapped around chunks of ground chicken and baby shrimp. I ordered the Pad See Ew with Chicken and loved it. There was a teeny amount of oil on the plate, but it was definitely better less than I have seen elsewhere, like at Room Service. The sauce had the perfect about of sweetness. It was delicious! I also tried the Shrimp Pad Thai, which was served more traditionally than most American Thai restaurants---meaning, it had more spice and less peanut. It was also very tasty, but I preferred the Pad See Ew.
The portions were large and quite filling, but the prices averaged an affordable $9-10 an entree. Adding shrimp to your meal cost only a measly $1 more than chicken.
My only complaint was the service. Our waitress was rude, unfriendly, and had a frown on her face the entire evening.
Oh well, it was still worth it!
After eating garbage Thai food in Queens (Long Island City... not Flushing) for 2 years, this has been refreshingly awesome. And the price was reasonable!
Came here for lunch and had the sauteed cashew chicken dish with rice. I thought the seasoning was good and it wasn't too greasy. The house soup was ok--a very clear broth and kind of bland.
My co-workers had the pad thai and ate all of it, so I'm guessing it was good. Seemed like a lot of people were ordering it. Very nicely decorated. Nothing extraordinary, but it is a clean place and I think they use good ingredients.
Honestly, I have not had Thai terribly often, but I ran across this place -- right around the corner from my office -- looked at the menu, and it did appeal to me -- both the food and the pricing.
So I went in -- down four steps, certainly not for the handicapped -- and walked into a nice, tranquil atmosphere. From all appearances, this seems to be a family run restaurant. I looks much smaller from the outside, but they appear to go all the way back a fair distance with seating.
I could not figure out what to order so I asked for a suggestion -- I told the waitress I wanted something spicy and with shrimp. Ultimately she recommended the "shrimp sauted in spicy basil sauce" -- I thought about it for a moment and decided to get it. Their lunch menu main courses come with a house salad or soup and jasmine steamed rice.
I got my order pretty quickly and brought it up to the office. I started with the salad . . . quite frankly I should have gone with soup, I was not so happy with the dressing. I moved onto the main course . . . although it is in a small container, apparently looks are deceiving because there was a healthy serving of food in there. The vegetables and shrimp were swimming in a nice basil scented sauce -- and one taste certainly indicates that it is spicy (just the way I like it). And you have to admire that there were SIX very nice sized shrimp in this one small container -- and they were tender and tasty as well. I added the jasmine rice at the end to enjoy what was left of the sauce.
In the end, my belly was satisfied, my wallet was not much worse for the experience (not bad for under $10), and I was a happy camper. Be sure to check this place out if you enjoy Thai and are in the neighborhood.
This place came highly recommended by a mutual friend. They were open pretty late to accomodate us. I think we got there past 11pm. Located in the sublevel, this restaurant is spacious inside with plenty of elbow room. I ordered the following...
- Papaya Salad ($6.50) - Som Tum - crispy and crunchy, very fresh
- Calamari ($6) - Muk Taud fried calamari with sweet chili sauce. - standard fare - nothing to write home about
- Minced Shrimp Roll ($5) - Hoy Joh ground shrimp, ground chicken, water chestnut wrapped in tofu sheet with sweet chili sauce - looked like mini fried spring rolls, was OK
- Duck Red Wine Sauce ($18) - Ped Lao Dang crispy boneless 1/2, duck, duck stock, red wine sauce with sauteed vegetables (Served With Steamed Jasmine Rice) - LOTS of boneless duck here, huge portions - tasted like Chinese food though minus the herbs
- Thai Iced Tea ($3) - not bad, average
2.5 stars if possible.
Our office decided to try this relatively new Thai restaurant. The lunch specials looked like they were very decently priced. In an office instead of crowding around a menu or passing it around, we like to make use of online menus.
One crummy thing is their website really sucks. Try reading the online menu with that stupid magnifying glass effect! Go straight to the PDF download instead.
Their portions were randomly sized with some co-workers getting half the amount of curry as others. All the various noodle dishes were high on noodle content and low on chicken, beef, shrimp etc.
I could count the number of pieces of chicken in my dish on the fingers of one hand.
.... and that DOESN'T include my thumb. 4 pieces? Seriously?!
Taste-wise it is ok but for the pricing and the skimpiness with the ingredients it certainly doesn't deserve another chance with us.
Just ordered from Rohm for lunch got the Pad Se Euw (spelling I know probably wrong too lazy to look back at the menu) with shrimp, I got it as part of the lunch special so I go the salad and noodles for $9, which is a pretty great deal. It arrived really quickly, the salad left a little to be desired, the peanut dressing was really great, but the lettuce was really poor quality iceberg, the tomato and cucumber were fresh though. The noodles on the other hand were great, very flavorful and not greasy, next time I will go for the version with chili sauce.
what can I say? great place to eat some delicious thai food, which is reasonably priced in the Flatiron area.
The atmosphere was cool and calm with a modern feel to it. The service was good and friendly. This place also had a private seating area, which was great when I went with a bunch of people.
The food to try:
pad thai, of course,
drunken noodles, but not so drunk, and
pad see ew
Went here with Keri for our last lunchie before she left me to get hitched. Sniff. And while I didn't think anything could come close to Pinto, man Rohm gives them a good run for their money! Super extensive lunch special menu (seriously, PAGES of specials) and a really, really cute space. The portions were huge and delish and fast service. My only ding, we never got our soup or salad starters, but since our mains came out about 5 minutes after ordering, I wasn't too bent out of shape. Will definitely be back - I also like the quattro of spicy condiments they serve alongside your meal for that added kick!
Lunch perfection. Fast and polite service (they seated me before the rest of my party arrived). Great lunch special. For $8-9 you get a soup or salad, with your choice between 15 different entree options. It's insane to me that I go to a deli and grab a sandwich to eat at my desk or I go to a nice restaurant with hot food, great service and it's the SAME price. Crazy New York.
I came here for lunch with a large group. We had a reservation, and the table they set up for us was awkwardly planned. We ordered a bunch of appetizers for the group, and then all ordered our dishes. We didn't get our drinks until AFTER the appetizers, soups, and salads had been brought out. We were all dying of thirst. And then the lunch entrees started coming out...sporadically. One person got her dish at the same time some other people got their soups. And two people got their dishes after some people had eaten all of theirs and had their plates cleared away.
The food itself was good, but the place was clearly not set up to handle a large group (there were 15 of us). It is probably fine for smaller groups. It's a small place to begin with so I wouldn't recommend coming here with more than 6 people at a time, and that is probably pushing it. Just know what you're getting into.
The best Thai place for delivery in the Gramercy area. We tried ThaiNY on Third Avenue for a while, but Rohm Thai is the Daniel Craig to ThaiNY's Pierce Brosnan. The Drunken Noodles is my standard.
Recommended by our friend, this place was on the agenda for a large dinner party. The ambiance was nice and modern, however the lighting was messed up. It had an annoying flashing mode to it where it seemed like we had our own personal strobe light. Finally they turned it off and turned on these mini lights that caused us to feel like we were under examination. Everyone started to sweat- literally.
The menu is pretty standard, the food was sub par. Perhaps it was what I ordered- the Thai BBQ Chicken which tasted similar to KFC. I wasn't a huge fan. Also tried the Curry Puffs which were descent however very oily.
The only perk about this place? Cheap. The prices were descent and very affordable.
Perhaps you should just stick to the general generic Thai stuff, like Pad Thai or Pad See Ew and I am sure you would be fine here.
It's a trendy little place and if you weren't paying attention, you might walk by without realizing it. The inside has been renovated and it looks nice. Good for groups. The food is normal Thai. Nothing spectacular. Service is good. Normal dining experience. Some of their "creative" appetizers were pretty good (papaya salad, duck roll). Decent prices. Nice location.
Oh, the crispy skin, the tasty fat, the delicate meat... You know, I really don't eat duck that much, but if this place keeps making their duck the way they do, I'll be eating it (and there) a whole lot more. Everything else is good, (in a standard-tasty-thai-good), but the duck is the stand-out in this joint.
This place opened 3 weeks ago. It was formerly Bangkok Cafe. Bangkok Cafe's owner's son took over and remodeled. It's a cute, modern place. Extremely reasonable prices for Grammercy area. Portions are pretty good and the overall food rating is above average.
Here's what we had:
Grilled pork appetizer - very flavorful - would recommend
Tom Yum soup - good, but was served at room temp (should have been hot)
Pad See Ew Noodles - delish - def recommend
Duck Curry - pretty good
Basil Chicken - also pretty good
Red Curry - good, but not great
Fried Bananas with green tea ice cream - pretty good
The food took awhile to come out, but servers were great at refilling our waters.
Considering this place has only been opened for 3 weeks, I think business is good and is a great spot to check out in the Grammercy area.
If you're looking for a casual but still chic dinner spot without the outrageous price tags and a place with pretty good food quality, come here. Great for small groups or dates.
decent thai food, a bit on the salty side.
nice decor inside, very warm and cosy, and soothing music. however, nothing special unless you're in the area. i realize that i like thai fusion better than regular thai food. the duck roll appetizers were pretty decent.
a better thai place in the area is Lantern on 18th and 2nd.
I ordered Rohm for the first time last night and I must say that I am impressed. I haven't had any of the curries yet, but I had the Pad Si Ew and it was one of the better ones I have had in the city. My girlfriend also had the Pad Si Ew and our friend had Pad Ki Mao. They also really enjoyed their dishes.
Although we haven't sampled more of the menu, due to the weak competition out in the Gramercy area, we think Rohm is the best of the the bunch around here. Prices are very reasonable so give it a try.
Rohm thai is heaven. I've lived in NYC for the last four years and Rohm gets my vote for best pad thai in the city, (besides Won Dee Siam on the UWS-- okay they're tied). Even my best friend, who is a chef at a fancy restaraunt liked it, and she's a tough critic. The delivery is super fast too.
i had the rohm noodles, it was bangnin. went for lunch and we were the only people in the place so the service was good. it was cheap and served it's purpose. because it is so out of the way i doubt i will be going back, but i would like to.
