Went here on Halloween for their "haunted" tasting. The picnic grounds were small but lovely, the tasting room was also small but not cramped, and the staff was very nice. No pretentiousness at all - just folks who love to make wine.
The wine itself was pleasant. Didn't totally wow me, but it was definitely drinkable. And the prices were right on the Cab and white so I bought a bottle of each. As promised, the Cab was the perfect accompanyment to Zachary's pizza the following night!
We were referred here by Mrs. Eckert at Eckert Estate around the corner, and I'm very glad that we took her advice.
You drive right through the vines and around the corner to the side tasting room, parking under some eucalyptus that provide some much needed shade. The tasting room is cool and inviting (yes, we were there when it was 90º outside), and the people were quite friendly. We tried to get the server to give us a list of his favorites (particularly since Mrs. Eckert gave such a good recommendation), but he had that small-town friendliness that I so love about smaller wine regions and would only say that there were lots of wineries and that we could find The wines are all Italian style, with American accents. Our particular favorite was the Cabera (Cab and Barbera), a perfect balance of everything we love about Cabernet and Barbera.
And, the Cabera definitely passed the "after the tasting" tasting test. I had it a week later, with a fresh tongue, and it tasted even better than it had at the winery.
This is one of my most favorite wineries to visit in the Livermore area!
They are very friendly and welcoming to guests (fresh faces and their regulars). The couple who own the place are wonderful.
They use to do outdoor tasting infront of the wine room, but now they have a real tasting room. On occasion, they put tables and chairs out for people to bring a picnic and get a bottle to enjoy a glass of the good stuff.
I personally like to take my new wine drinking friends here, because while they do have a great selection in reds, most of them are not as dominant in tannins like most reds are. The trick is truly to let the breathe after opening (learned that the hard way on my first visit). So on that note, make if you are going to come by for a tasting, to not come in right after they open (like I did) or the wines will taste a lot different then an hour or two after they have aerated.
Every time I come to this winery, they remember my name, things that are going on in my life and in general make that personal connection with myself and other patrons.
Personal Recommendations: Barbara, Cabera, and the Cab!
Every small winery should strive to be like Rodrigue Molyneaux. The setting is beautiful and serene, the wines are superb, and there is an absence of pretentiousness here. We were helped by one of the friendly apprentices at R.M. who assured us that it would stay this way.
We took home a bottle of Amianco -- a perfect white wine for summer. If you're tasting wine in Livermore, this is undoubtedly a required stop.
Although we did purchase a bottle of Primitivo wine I think my husbands guilt of not purchasing a bottle added to the reason why we bought a bottle. A couple of the wines were OK but to me most of them just didn't taste right, a bit sour or tingly (not quite sure how to describe what I was tasting). My husband on the other hand seemed to like them more than myself. Unless I love the Primitivo once we open it I won't go back for more wine. The people however were very friendly, the setting was lovely and the tasting was reasonable ($3) so if you're like me and are making your way through the Livermore wineries give them a try you may like the wine more than I did.
A little off the beaten path, but worth a visit. It's very much a mom & pop operation. The owner literally just finished nailing up a tasting room. I liked the 2005 Cabernet and the Primitivo (tasted like sangria to me), but bought a bottle of the Cabiovese. A cool place to try if you haven't been yet!
