Best burgers by the beach.
Small bar, no kids allowed. -

Good burger, but not the best by a long shot.
Fry's are pre-frozen and just don't cut it above 3 stars.
Nice atmosphere, customers and staff.
Joe's a good guy with a big heart.
TV's are old, tiny laptop computer screen style and size and not practical to watch any game on.
Eat up and run, no reason to hang around.
Fast turnover of customers may be the whole idea here.
Hard as hell to find parking.
We'll always go back, if we can find a place to park. -
Review from Sang P.
When my friend told me THIS was the best burger place in San Diego I had my doubts. I mean, how could a pub be better than joints such as Smashburger, Burger Lounge, Bareback Grill and Hodad's, where they study/focus significant amount of their time solely on burgers? But I trusted my friend and was willing to give it a try.
Went in pretty late with a friend, but made it just in time for the last c all for food. Maybe that was the cue for "it won't be the usual burger?" But overall, I wasn't as impressed as the other people on here. It was just a regular burger. I felt like it was something I've cooked before. Meat, Bread, Onions, Lettuce and everything else just seemed regular. And the fries? again, just REGULAR.
Some people focused on the seasoning, which I also didn't see. To be fair, it really could just be me and my lack of knowledge. Or it could be unfair to judge them entirely on one meal, especially when it was the last call for food. But for now, my review holds this place as the location with average burgers and regular beer.
However, really enjoyed the intimate atmosphere and the quiet location far from the crowded PB area. Plus for that! -

THIS is what dive/burger bars are supposed to be.
Simple menu: Burgers/fries/drink! Burgers that are big, juicy , tasty, properly cooked burgers, mixed drinks with a proper pour, fries that are fresh, hot and just enough crispy... Not to mention sensible pricing. This shows how a simple well prepared item can shine. No need for 100 item menus and all the crap you find in so many places now.
The regulars are friendly, the people that happen to stumble upon this place are welcomed. There is hardly any room to sit and people don't mind sharing tables!
This place can be crowded, but crowd is used to it. Find a spot and order up.. These burgers are great.
This place just works.
Bring cash... Credit cards not taken! -

Less is more, so my overall statement on Rocky's is: BEST. PLACE. EVER.
I refuse to cheat on Rocky's w/Hodads, I don't care what anyone says. It's tiny, hard to get a seat, the bartenders are cranky, salty dogs and I could not possibly love this place any more than I already do. If you go there and are offended by the staff or the overall demeanor of the bar, you don't belong there.
By far the #1 burger I've experienced, they make their own brew and the rest of the micro's on tap are great. This is the first place I take anyone that comes into town.
These guys got it right: Burgers, fries & beer. What more do you need?
The only con is cash only. Totally worth it!! -

MY FIRST EVER YELP REVIEW!
I've wanted to sign up for a while now, because I think I can help. I think once you take advice from me, your dining/entertainment/life will improve. :)
I think I'm going to go with the list thing. People love lists (5 stars).
One thing you should know is that there is a WAY to do Rocky's, and a way to NOT do Rocky's. Steps listed below:
1.) Go in, order 1/2 lb. cheeseburger, fries, and a beer at the bar. You WILL be standing at this point.
2.) Enjoy your beer--YES, GET A BEER. If you don't drink, you should probably just leave and this WILL NOT be the place for you. You need alcohol to withstand the compact environment and somewhat NY style bartender that takes the order.
3.) A table WILL magically open before your food arrives, if it doesn't, you are providing bad ju-ju and should leave immediately.
4.) Try the little peppers in the honey jars, enjoy a DELICIOUS burger. It's not a fancy burger, you can't even get bacon--it's just the best burger in San Diego (delicious meat, condiments, and non-pretentious bun).
5.) Pay with CASH ONLY.
6.) LEAVE. Don't sit around this divey bar and drink after your burger. That is how the tables magically open up, you follow these rules!!
By the way, if you think Hodad's is better than Rocky's, you're an idiot. -

The ONLY items on the menu are burgers and fries, so if that isn't what you're looking for then this is not the place for you.
If you are in the mood for a straight up GOOD burger and a beer - this is the place to go. The burgers are basic, delicious, and reasonably priced. -

Review from Dan N.
Best Burger in San Diego thus far!
I'm a burger guy... I've eaten at some of the top burger in SD; Burger lounge, Hoodads, smash burger, cowboy star, crazy burger, 5 guys, in and out. But all of them take a back seat to Rocky's.
Have you ever seen that episode of How I met your mother where Marshall searches for the perfect burger? Well he was talking about this burger.
For a simple no nonsense traditional burger this is the place to go. The toppings were fresh and not overly stacked on the burger. It was the perfect amount of toppings to meat ratio. The bun was soft and filling and held the burger together perfectly. The meat was flavorful and juicy and so soft that it melted in my mouth. It was burger perfection! 5 out of 5 sporks!
Fries are also thin and crisp. Very tasty, but could use some seasoning. Also they taste like the fries you would buy at the supermarket and deep fry at home. It's not necessarily a bad thing but I'm not entirely sure if they are handmade or not. Either way I give them 4 out of 5 sporks.
The place is not a burger joint but more of a dive bar.
The menu is simple Burger or Cheese Burger 1/3 or 1/2 lbs and fries. It's classic.
The decor is small and dark so this place is not ideal for large groups but it does make for an intimate setting.
The service was good but not out of your way good. There are no waiters, but they do bring you your food. You have to order at the bar.
The price can't be beat. around 5-6 bucks for a burger and 2.75 for fries. BUT CASH ONLY.
All in all this is a great spot and my new go to burger joint. It gets 4 stars instead of 5 because of the lack of waiters, small space, and dim lights and the fact that it's CASH ONLY. But overall I highly recommend Rocky's. -

Racism is alive and well in San Diego. I am a black mother of three, in my forties and attempted to enter Rocky's crown pub for lunch with my same age caucasian boss, a doctor in San DIego, and a co-worker, also white. Upon entering, an employee, Nick demanded ID. My boss actually thanked him, saying it has been decades since we were carded. He brushed her off and said " Not you, I want hers, pointing to me". I wish I looked under 21, even under 31 or even 41!! He was all over me demanding the ID. Unprepared, I began to go through my purse. His voice got louder and louder and he continued to repeat himself, " You can't come in." By then, customers were starring. As his verbal assalts had me so rattled, my boss tried to assist me. I hander her my wallet while I continued to go thru all the loose items in my purse. My doctor was attempting to remove my california driver's license from my wallet when he said " Why can't you do this? Why do you have so many credit cards?" and he then grabbed my wallet from my Doctor and proceeded to go through my wallet to remove the license ( caught behind the clear plastic holder). My boss had to ask him to give back my wallet. My driver's license was retrieved from the wallet, but was the old expired one ( you know the one we all girls keep with the great picture) Nick scolded me for having an expired license. He continued to raise his voice both in tone and volume. Myn boss, in her usual calmness inquirred how an expired license didn't support her age if age was the issue. My thought is if someone under the age of 21 wants to enter, why would they use an expired license of someone in their forties? I was denied entrance, not that big of a deal. What was a big deal was the way in which I was treated. My boss had to step in and protect me from Nick. She quirred him as to his manner in which he delt with me. As a professional, I have seen her interact with very emotional patients and treat all with respect without regard to their race, nationality, religion or attire. Nick's response to me and then to her trying to calm him down and get him to back off was scary. He started to smile at the end and defend himself as not being hostile. My doctor's comment was on point " Your manner with which you treat people is unprofessional and unacceptable" And I believe racially based.

Okay, Water Front reigns supreme as the best cheeseburger in San Diego. Maybe we hit Rocky's on a bad day, but just was not feeling it.
This is a tiny little place (think hole in the wall). Very limited menu - I like that, it avoids complication. After hearing about Rocky's and reading the reviews, I had much higher expectations and they were not met.
Ordered the 1/2 pound cheeseburger. Meat was somewhat flavorless and very dry. Cheese was awful. I'd liken it to goop. Yes, goop. I scraped it off my burger, actually. I'd give it a 3 out of 5. Fries were awesome. Creepy employee who put his hands all over my back? NOT awesome.
It does the job if you need a burger fix and you can't get to the Water Front because you don't live in or venture to the downtown /Little Italy area often. A good burger, but definitely not great.
TIP: Hit the ATM first, this place is CASH ONLY. -

Best Burgers in Town. Hands Down. Doesn't even compare to Hodad's.
Different kind of Burger than Burger Lounge and 5 Guys. If you want a true, fresh, greasy yummy cheeseburger, go to Rocky's.
Cash Only. That's the only downfall. So bring the green backs.
Every time I eat here, I love it. There hasn't been 1 time I've left here unsatisfied. Really, it's that good.

Alright, so the "great debate" on who has the best burger in my neck of the woods (OB/Point Loma/PB) is either Rocky's or Hodad's. I am a regular at both them when I am craving a good burger each place has their own merits. To me, Rocky's is more of a pure burger based on flavor and Hodad's serves up a big sloppy burger (notice I did not say greasy) that taste awesome too.
Rocky's is actually a small bar that serves killer burgers. For some reason unbeknown-est to me, they only take cash (a familiar policy for several establishments who do business in the beach communities). Prices are very reasonable. Two people can each get a burger, split an order of fries and each have a beverage for around $20 plus tip.
I am not a big fan of a ton of condiments on my burgers and "The standard Rocky burger is a 1/3 pound cheeseburger with pickles, raw or grilled red onions, tomato, lettuce and mayonnaise. The hand crafted, never frozen meat patties are made fresh." They also have a 1/2 lb patty option which I my personal preference.
Once you order your burger, be prepared to wait up to 40 minutes for this masterpiece to arrive. Also be aware that this is a small establishment and it is not always easy to get a table or seat at the bar if you go there on a weekend or at happy hour when the weather is nice.
So, lets get to the main topic, the food review. When I want a pure burger and am in a carnivorous mood this is the joint for me. Normally I forgo the tomato's on my burgers, but the meat is so lean and tasty I choose to order my burger at Rocky's just the way the normally serve them. I can eat the entire burger without even mixing in any fries or sips from my coke because it taste so freaking awesome. Even though I get the 1/2 burger and it does a good job of filling me up, I have to fight the urge to order another burger just for the taste. If it wasn't for the wait, I would probably order (2) 1/3 burgers in quick succession.
I don't mind waiting for good food, so this is not an issue for me. I am not a beer or alcohol drinker and don't really hang at bars so the food must rock for me to hang so long. The bartenders who take orders and deliver the food are all very friendly and gracious. The are quick to offer up refills and can tell when you are getting antsy waiting for your burger and go back in the kitchen area to provide you with an update.
For a great lean burger that is very flavorful, you can't go wrong with Rocky's. The meat is so lean it almost melts in your mouth. The fries are cooked just right and compliment the burger in an awesome manner. Priced very affordable considering the quality. Remember to bring cash, be prepared to search for parking and wait for your food depending on what day and time you frequent this outstanding establishment. -

The preface to coming to this dive-y sports bar...
the S.O. said "we can eat anything all weekend but burgers. we HAVE to go to Rocky's for burgers, they're the best"
The burgers are pretty darn tasty, fresh home made patty, and fresh bun and veggies... it was Yummy! (but to me, i can't say it's the best burger in life, but it is pretty good)
The fries leave you with something to be desired. ...
there are TVs galore up in this bar. so... probably not the best idea to come here on a date, as your date will be sucked into the many TV screens of sports, leaving you to play words with friends on your phone.
ps. CASH ONLY! -

I love a good pitcher of beer and Rocky's usually has it for those outings on the weekends with friends. Everyone gets burgers except for me due to health reasons so the bar manager looks at me funny when I order a grilled cheese and fries but it is still bomb. Great chill place to hang out and catch up. The employees are super nice and the simple menu really makes this place.

San Diego, CA
I checked this place out for their burgers of course. It does not disappoint. The wait for food is so worth it. It's a great place to come and grab a pint, relax, and then enjoy a delicious burger. Once you bite into the juicy goodness that is a greasy burger, there will be no doubt in your mind that you may have found one of the best, if not best, burger in town. You can tell that they're made with love. The fries are just okay, but give this place a shot for their burgers. The prices are very reasonable too. The place is small but cozy and the whole staff is really nice. It looks like this place gets a lot of regulars, for good reason.

Pacific Beach, San Diego, CA
OK, enough is enough! I have been in the restaurant biz for over 25 years, but I am not arrogant to think I know everything like some of you amazingly experienced Yelpers...
I would have to say that the reviews for Rocky's (and most establishments in general) have become ridiculous for a number of reasons. Lets clarify what were judging here: Burgers, the physical establishment, and the staff that serves them...OK, its a small neighborhood beer pub with a smaller kitchen and yet a smaller menu to match. Burgers n fries n beers...THAT'S IT PAL!...
Let me clarify the difference between a restaurant and a small neighborhood pub...SIZE! Can you pump out quality custom burgers to voracious eaters quickly? NO, you gotta wait, even in the best of busy settings...obviously they don't have the time OR THE ROOM, to cook you up that bleu cheese, grilled onions n bacon douche hipster burger. Obviously, judging by the jackass opinions, it DOES take a bottle rocket scientist to figure this out in SD. Take the time to observe and digest what you see and ask yourself why it is the way it is, BEFORE giving your post bong hit diatribe on what you think any bar or restaurant SHOULD be, in your vastly experienced knowledge of all that is restaurants...
Rocky's doesn't pretend to be anything other than what it is, a very busy beer pub with sports on the many TV's and with a small flat top grill that gives them just enough room to make damn good SIMPLE burgers. Does it get too busy for its size, YES. But I would say its usually more chaotic than slammed. Does the doorman handle every situation like a trained detective with 20 yrs on the force? NO. Do the east coast bartenders come across rudely and short of temper sometimes?, YES (but read below as to why). Does the small size n layout attribute to less than comfortably quiet moments, yelling of orders, being hawked for your seats, your ladyfriend being hawked for her assets, etc,. YES.
First, Rocky's is too small for ANY staff, they want you to have room to be able to sit down, hence why there are 2 bartenders BEHIND the bar, which is where they stay. Does this cause issues with ordering/pickup/transfer of food n drinks? Yes, but I realize that and adjust. I cant get mad at anyone because this is the way it is. I mean people get mad at guests trying to order over football fan noise, during a game? Then get pissy because they have to sometimes pickup said order, REALLY? WTF!, get over your center of the universe attitude! Are you the same group of douchebags that gets pissy when the menu and the waiter are French, while your sitting in a bistro in Paris?
Could Rocky's use a better ordering system?, yes, do they really need it?, no. As far as the staff goes I personally NEVER had a problem with any of them because, once again, I see whats going on and adjust. The bartenders are busy doing MANY things at once, including barking out order names, and don't have time to explain the food or beer menu, that is right on the wall for all to see, to non-observant fucking brain dead idiots! Know what to order BEFORE going up the bar and MAYBE you will get a smile because you have the ability to observe, think and function like someone with a city college education. I mean the small menu shouldn't be THAT fucking hard to figure out, RIGHT? Wrong, I guess it is...
Beyond all that, the burger's are very good for what they are, traditional, no bells n whistles burgers n cheeseburgers, nothing more... The fries, traditional thicker cut shoestring style fries with salt, nothing more...So anyone can make these right?, yes. I can make a better burger but I am not always in the mood to fire up the skillet. Can I make better fries, yes, I don't always have access to a deep fryer either. So then how do you judge this burger, since all the condiments and veggies are standard? First, by the bun, very good, it doesn't always fall apart when holding their juicy burger. Second, the meat, EXCELLENT!!! It is juicy, high quality, perfectly fatty (this is why your burger is just juicy enough) beef. So does this add up to the best burger in SD? I don't think so, because if I can make it just as good, if not better, then why would it be the best? I judge "the best" based upon exclusivity, uniqueness, and the ability to reproduce it at home...That said, I will keep going to Rocky's as long as they are open for a what I consider a cool, semi noisy neighborhood pub that serves consistently damn good, no frills, traditional juicy cheeseburger's and fries while washing it down with a cold one... -

Might be the best burger of my life.
It's a small little place, but we came after the lunch rush, so we were able to get a spot. The service was just ok, but I'm definitely coming back for the food! -

I'm not going to compare Rocky's to other burger joints just rate it on it's own merits.
So, it is a burger joint in PB, super chill, not very many tables, beer and wine only, cash only and no parking. Having said that, we found parking in the neighborhood, we walked in sat at the bar and a table opened up that we moved to, we both ordered cheeseburgers and shared fries. The burger was really good not incredible, not life changing but really good the fries were plentiful and tasty and the service was ok.
Remember this is NOT a restaurant it's a bar that happens to serve good burgers. Enjoy! -

Rocky's is the best burger in San Diego. No contest. Decent beer selection - always end up splitting a pitcher of Crown Point Ale with my burger! The only items on their menu is 1/2 or 1/3 pounder with or without cheese and fries. Simple and delicious! It gets very crowded but the wait is worth it. It is self-seating so upon walking in, be prepared to be a vulture and watch fellow diners for who is almost done in order to snag a seat. Don't be discouraged. Even without a table we always order our food while standing and without fail, by the time our food is ready we already sitting down and ready to eat!

Review from Allen F.
You have to be 21 to be inside this place, so then you have to be 21 to order the best burger in SD. I feel like if had tried this before turning 21, I'd have been more excited about this burger than being able to hit up bars.
Well, the patty is thick and freakishly juicy. Get it 1/3 or 1/2 pound, with or w/o cheese, but just get it. There is nothing fancy about this burger either. It's the standard American burger, but it's the standard American burger done ridiculously right.
I put some serious consideration into dropping a star for the atrocious wait. It's ALWAYS around 30 minutes if not more. But then again, Yelp says 5 stars is "Woohoo! As good as it gets!" so I'll abide by their guidance. The Rocky's Crown Pub burger has Jack Nicholson all over it when it comes to comparisons with the competition. -

Thanks to Yelpers, here's another place to enjoy some tasty burgers.
CASH only.
Simple menu: 1/3 or 1/2 pound hamburger or cheeseburger. Lunch special (11am to 2pm): 1/3lb cheeseburger, fries and beer for $10.
Cheeseburger was juicy and flavorful. Nothing fancy, just a burger with lettuce, tomatoes and onions. One downside, not a fan of American Cheese, so I will only order hamburgers in the future. Enjoy your meal with a side of delicious fries. YUM. -

Good friendly bartenders, a bunch of tvs with different games on, and ARE YOU KIDDING ME?? These burgers rock! If you've never been, you must go there now!!!
12/18/2011 - Update. I've now been to Rocky's twice a week (coming from East County) since writing my first review.
1. Bartenders - a little attitude, but in a good, bartender kind of way. They keep your glasses full and keep track of your orders. Once you've been there a few times, they will remember you.
2. Atmosphere - It's a neighborhood bar, what do you expect? It's small, so you may have to wait a little while before you get a seat, but so what? It's worth it because of..
3. Burgers - Great, big, juicy, a little greasy, plain ole burgers. Don't expect anything fancy. I think the only options are cheese or no, and grilled or fresh onions. Went there Friday, and going again today (Sunday). $6.95 for a 1/2 lb cheeseburger...well worth it. -

Mmmmmmmmmmmm.
I could end this review right there, but I'll elaborate a bit for anyone who hasn't been there. This is hands down the best burger I've ever had. NO frills, cash only. Order at the bar and be ready with your order - it shouldn't be too difficult to decide since there are 4 variations: 1/2 and 1/3 lb of a hamburger or cheeseburger. And Fries. Draft Beer and wine and it's a perfect meal. Seating is tricky and I've only been there a handful of times when we didn't have to hunt and wait for a seat. On the plus side, people are pretty accomodating and friendly about it so they eat up and move on. I've even shared the corner of a table when we weren't able to get our own. Worth it, I'd eat this standing up in the parking lot it's so good. -

How is it that I lived in SD for 3 years and we never dated?
I think I'm going to do it...
THIS WAS THE BEST BURGER IVE HAD so far IN LIFE!
-Loved that it was in a chill pub
- Loved that it was "older" men serving, just a very safe, comforting feel
- Loved that the bouncer was VERY helpful finding people seats
- Loved the friendly service
- Loved every bite of that 1/3ib burger
LOVED that Rockys and I have now begun our love affair. I hope to see you again soon. -
Review from Chris P.
This is one of the best burgers I've had in San Diego. I would say second only to Hodads. It's simple but juicy and delicious.
The place was packed when we arrived on a Sunday afternoon so my friends and I had to stand while we waited for some seats to open up.
A couple finished at the bar and when they left my buddy went to sit down. As he was sitting down the bar tender actually told him to let the couple behind him sit down (referencing me and my friend's wife). The bar tender didn't realize that we were all together and thought my friend was just being a jerk and taking an open seat. We all had a good laugh and chatted with the bar tender while we waited for our meals to arrive.
I had the 1/3 lb cheesburger and fries. Which, considering the menu is 4 items its pretty obvious what you're going to eat. I had a couple beers as well which were some great options that I can't get in Canada. The first one was the Racetrack (?) IPA and the next was Pacifico. I really liked the Racetrack while the Pacifico was meh. -

LOVED: The Cheeseburger
And yet ANOTHER??! Yes, a burger joint. A PUB, that's known for it's BURGERS?! Whaaaaaaat?! The Fat Boy Krew definitely had to check this spot out!!! Shout out to my FIRST cousin Irene and her husband Joel, our special guests for this version of Food Excursion Friday.
- Rocky's is a hole in the wall pub in a small corner of Pacific Beach.
- It was crowded on a Friday afternoon, but then again, it's PB. Do people work in this part of town?! Yes, the pub's bartenders and servers.
- Difficult to get a table, but we got lucky someone was leaving.
- Beer menu is more complicated then the BURGER menu.
- The Burger menu consists of a Hamburger and a Cheeseburger, although; you may pick different sizes!!!
- The special came with a 1/3 Burger , Fries, and a BEER!!!!!
- Took a while for our orders to come out. A LONG 55 minute wait. FAIL.
- THE BURGER was SUPER JUICY!!!!! No ketchup or mustard needed. MUCH FLAVOR in every bite, although; a bit small.
- Fries were tasteless and were a big FAIL. One of us had to drench them with ketchup.
- BEER (Hef) was, what else?! GREAT!!!
Not too bad for a pub. Not on par with the other previous burger joints but definitely holds it's own.

I love everything about Rocky's. Small hole in the wall with the best burgers you will ever have at a great price! The burgers are the simplest no frills burgers but they must put cat nip in them because they are irresistible. Get the deal with fries and a beer and you won't be disappointed.
Two things to keep in mind:
1) If you call in your order you have to take it to go (No changing your mind)
2) This is a cash only establishment -

This place is definitely on the top of my husband's list. It has such a chill, laid back vibe. The menu is simple: burgers, fries, beer, and wine. And the burgers are damn good! It's like straight out of my grandma's kitchen good.
We love that the owners are from Chicago, and there is memorbilia all over the place. Such a fun spot to go to when any Chicago sporting event is going on!
You have to parking in the neighboorhood around the corner. It is also cash only. -

Burgers were simple and well priced. I am not a fan of overpriced burgers. They are not the best burgers in SD, but for the price I didn't expect them to be. If you want a decent burger for a decent price this is the place to go.

Rocky's brews are inexpensive and the burgers take a little while, but it's worth the wait! It's a small place and I haven't heard much about them besides having solid burgs. Cash only!
