The Rocky Mountain Dinosaur Resource Center is an unexpected gem in the wilds of Colorado. A fully functioning dinosaur research center, they gather their own fossils and create mountings for musea around the world. If you are lucky, you will get Alan for the free tour.
The displays are extremely interesting and Alan was knowledgeable and friendly. Kids of all ages can see and touch real fossils and see the lab in action.
This was a great museum to go to with the kids. There's the usual fun in a dinosaur museum of seeing just how tiny your kids look compared to the dinosaur bones. But what made this museum really special was the many hands on exhibits (touching a real fossil, feeling how the jaw of a dinosaur felt...), being able to look into the lab to see how they do things--always appealing to my ever curious 7 year old, and the kids area, where they can "make their own dinosaurs" out of magnet pieces, use brushes to act like archeologists, and compare their jumps to those of different dinosaurs. The tour looked great, but there was no way our 4 year old was going to stand around listening to it.

Ok I just LOVE dinosaurs and even though this museum is small (to be expected in a small town) it was excellent. They had a lot of awesome displays (even some above you) and I loved the kiddie area. I can't wait until my little niece is a bit older. I want to help her uncover the dinosaur bones in the sand, feel the different fossils in the box, etc. Very nice gift shop too. I found my favorite dinosaur book as a child there and I was so excited the poor ladies working the store nearly jumped out of their skin.
