Oak Park, CA
I had been to the Rock Garden several times before their remodel, but this was my first visit post updating. Physically, the restaurant is very nice and the patio is especially pleasant. Nice job on the remodel!
9 of us arrived late Sunday morning. The restaurant was full and there was a line. Surprisingly, our wait was only about 15 minutes which isn't bad for a group our size.
Upon our arrival at the table we were given a large platter of warm muffins. They looked like cornbread muffins but I'm not sure what they were. Buttery, with a unique flavor. I failed to ask the server what they were. Half of us thought they were yummy, the rest were neutral.
The brunch menu reflects a variety of unique offerings. Some of us were looking for standard breakfast fare (eggs, bacon, hash browns, toast) but that wasn't an option.
The first thing that caught our eye was something called a "Colossal Cinnamon Roll". Sounded fantastic so we ordered two for the table. Sadly, they were not colossal and not very good. When I think of cinnamon rolls I think of Cinnabon-syle rolls: warm and gooey with frosting. The rolls at Rock Garden were warm but it was clear they were just out of the microwave. As they cooled they got hard. The topping was a drizzle of indeterminate flavor with crushed macadamias. 1 Star for flavor and disappointment!
The best item we ordered was the belgian waffles. The BLT and Turkey Clubs were okay but they were made with thick Focaccia bread. My family are old-school: we want our BLT's and clubs on white toast.
The servicer was a very nice gal but the service seemed a bit slow. Granted, there were 9 of us so we expected it to take a bit longer. It wasn't horrible, but it was alittle slow.
I would like to try Rock Garden on another day to see if they have a larger menu with a wider variety. Personally, if you're doing breakfast or brunch you have to offer the classics like eggs, bacon and hash browns. Maybe they do on other days.
Stay tuned for an update! -

Went here because it looked great from th eoutside and heard good things about the renovation. The servers and hostesses couldn't have been nicer but that wasnt enough to make up for the lousy food.
Their new menu has limited options, which wouldn't be a bad thing if they had any good choices. The menu was divided into Salads, DInner, and Pizza. If you are not in the mood for pizza or salad you have about five choices. The choices don't seem related at all and I am not sure at all what this restaurant is trying to be.
I ordered the cobb salad while my girlfriend ordered the asian chicken salad. Neither of us finished them. They wern't bad, but if I want a cobb salad I'll go to John's and not pay for table service.
This restaurant has potential. The outside is beautiful; it was a nice night and they had everyone seated inside sounds about right for the night. A new menu, one that decides what this restaurant wants to be, would be appreciated. -

My Mom and I came here for lunch to enjoy the nice outdoor patio with misters and a nicely landscaped waterfall and stream. We didn't expect great food and came more for the nice vistas of the mountains and the roadrunner on the patio begging for your food.
The owners were very nice but our waitress was borderline nasty which pretty much ruins the dining experience for me. Mom and I ordered iced tea when she came over to ask what we wanted to drink and the waitress simply turned and walked away. I was thinking, did she want is to order wine? Who just walks away and says nothing without even a nod of acknowledgment or a smile? Funny. Maybe she was having a terrible day.
I chose the tuna salad after asking our "friendly waitress" which salad was the best to which she replied, "I don't eat salads, I would order a grilled cheese". *Sigh*
My salad was decent, fairly small but nothing special.
Mom ordered a meatball sandwich that was pretty tasty. It came with a side of pasta salad. I hear breakfast buffet here is the way to go. If we go back it will be for this after they complete their remodel. -

We give it six months before they go out, We were there for dinner and always look to support new Palm Springs business. This one is pretty bad from the cold decor, poor lighting to weird and heavy menu selections. They were not very busy and yet we waited 15 minutes with zero service. We left and they didn't even care. We were told by our friends who own a local hotel that the reviews are not good but we decided to go anyway. so sorry. FYI; just down 111 is Miro's OMG always the best in every way.
We gave it 2 stars because we thought they deserved that much, for giving that old place a much need facelift. -

Contrary to older reviews, the Rock Garden is again open, and nicely remodeled inside and out. It still needs some decor touches, as it looks very austere and cold with empty fountains, and a very open dining area (compared to the cramped quarters of the old Rock Garden). We stopped for dinner. Place was nearly empty, but it was early on a Monday night. The menu for dinner is a complete bore. Only a handful of entrees, and nothing very appetizing to us. No steaks, a salmon entree, and some other fish item, and a couple of stewlike preparations, and a pricey hamburger. We ordered wine. The wine list is kind of juvenile. The wines are listed as "Cheap", "Better" and "Good" as I remember. I guess this is their idea of humor. Next we ordered an appetizer of crisp calamari. It was pretty tasty, and served in a paper cone. We decided not to order dinner. The menu needs some nice items. It appears to be ala carte, so dinner, salad and appetizer is going to run in the mid to upper 20's per person. There are many better choices in Palm Springs. We are going to give them another chance for breakfast, as they have a really nice patio for outdoor dining.

Palm Springs, CA
Well the wait is over and the all new and totally remodeled Rock Garden is now open! Our party of 4 had a nice heated table outside on the beautiful patio and server Steve was a delight... Our table had a cross section of the varied menu, from pizza, crabcakes, steak, seabass,& pork shoulder. Everything was very good and perfectly cooked. The corn chowder was really the best I've ever had. Can't say anything about the deserts 'cause we were filled up! Can't wait for the Sunday brunch...The new Rock Garden is nothing like the old one, Give it a try for a very enjoyable dining experience.

Rancho Mirage, CA
Granted, we happened to there the first night the new owners served dinner, and from the looks of it, it's not ready for prime time....at all. Since it was a cool evening, we elected to eat inside. The main dining room is cavernous, and nothing but hard surfaces everywhere...either rock or concrete. Even with just a scattering of diners, the noise was overbearing! Like an industrial bathroom echoey....Lighting was flat, and there's no color other than gray. We were first seated by noisy children ( why does this always happen to us???), but told the woman seating us we had to move to where it was more quiet. That proved to be the bar area, which was much quieter and more accommodating, but equally drab and colorless.
Now to the food. One of us ordered a roast pork dish, which came slathered with a thick sauce that resembled treacle. The flavor was so salty and overpowering, it was returned after two bites. I ordered the skillet chicken pot pie with puff pastry, according to the menu...A rather shallow skillet pie was served, the filling was very dry, with no sauce or gravy, and the crust had somehow lost any puff it may have had, and was more like a traditional crust.
What a shame. The building is unique, but as it stands now, the dinner food was not good, not inexpensive, and the noise inside and drab interior are deal-busters for us. So wanted this newly reopened place to be good.! -
Review from Andrew M.
Rock Garden Cafe was able to accommodate our party of forty, but that might have been the highlight of our visit.
A quick scouting of the breakfast buffet revealed options that did not seem enticing. There was no way we were going to feel satisfied after filling our stomachs with the grease-laden items.
We ordered the chicken fried steak, chicken salad sandwich, and hot pastrami sandwich to share between us. Although the entrees were plentiful and pastrami sandwich able to satisfy our hunger, they were not memorable and did not justify the higher-than-usual prices. -

Palm Springs, CA
Great place to get away from the tourists and downtown.
Food is nothing to get too excited about, but it is good for the price.
Buffet on weekends is a deal.
Don't let the older folks that run the place put you off, after all they have been dealing w/ the general public for quite awhile now and anyone who has ever worked retail/restaurants knows that most customers are demanding jerks who feel that a 2 dollar tip is adequate.
Outdoor patio is the place to be and Staci the waitress is better than any waitress in a hundred dollar a meal steak house!
The outdoor patio is great for talking business over lunch -

Aurora, CO
Had breakfast here yesterday and pleasantly surprised they offer 30% off due to the time of year. My father and I had breakfast for only $20. After trying to go to another restaurant that was closed until the end of September we drove by here and thought we would give it a try.
I had the California omelet with hash-browns and substituted my toast for pancakes. The omelet was cooked perfectly and absolutely delicious with cheese, tomatoes and avocado. The hash-browns were standard nothing amazing but cooked properly. The portion was large and I could only eat half of the omelet and about a fourth of the hash-browns. I was not impressed with the pancakes only ate two bites and decided they were not for me.
The coffee was ok but not amazing. They leave the carafe on the table so you can fill up as much as you like.
The service was fantastic! It has a family owned feel to it. Our server was very attentive and our food came very quickly. Also, we took our time after completing our meal to enjoy the outdoors and our conversation and the waiter did not rush us out.
Walking into the restaurant it was a bit dark so we decided to sit on the patio that has a beautiful view of the hills. They have trees and a man-made running stream. The noise of running water was very pleasant and it was interesting to watch all of the birds that like to hang out on the patio. The tables were clean and the sugar for the coffee/tea is in a plastic container with a lid on it, I am assuming to stay safe from birds. It could use a little TLC the water is a bit green and full of leaves and the umbrellas are faded by the sun.
Due to the amazing service and the freshness of the omelet's ingredients I would go back to the Rock Garden Cafe. -

I love everything about this place: the food, the ambience, and the service. I have been here several times for lunch and really enjoy it. We've always had very good food with generous portions at a fair price. However, the Saturday and Sunday buffett are absolutely amazing! For $9.95 you get a gourmet buffet with the most amazing breakfast and dinner items. The desserts are mind-blowing... and the drink is incuded!
Weather permitting, sit outside by one of the fountains. -

used to always go here when visiting palm springs. NEVER AGAIN!
Misters were off. Water was green and it looked like they chopped all teh trees down outside. We Tried to bring a party of 10 people there for brunch. The whole staff,MGT clueless. After a 30 min wait of them not cleaning any tables or trying to seat us.We ended up leaving and went to ELMERS where within 10 minutes were seated. STAY AWAY . unless your there right when they open... -

Orange, CA
Pretty nice brunch buffet for $10. They have good belgian waffles, eggs benedict, scrambled eggs with spinach, potatoes, assortment of fruit (strawberries, cantaloupe, honeydew, and red cherries), a breakfast enchilada with eggs (pretty tasty), salad bar, meatloaf, bacon, sausage, a bunch of pastries too.
The pastries are why I gave this place a 4 stars and very friendly service. The pastries reminded me of France, with breads, fruit tarts, and cookie-type desserts. If I didn't already have my fill on all the breakfast dishes, I would've had more pastries.
If I'm ever in Palm Springs again, probably for Coachella, I'll definitely go back to the Rock Garden Cafe.
Even their outside patio area has little sprinklers that spray a mist of water on hot days. -

I still love breakfast at this place even tho everyone else seems to hate it!
The owner walked out and met us on the walkway carrying two menus. She said 'sit anywhere you like'. As we walked towards the patio she said 'how about this nice ocean front table'... (it was near the pond).
I think she might come across grumpy to some people, but she is always super nice and friendly once you talk to her.
Great breakfast menu with many choices. Portions are large. Service is always friendly and pretty good.
Their Stuffed French Toast is awesome!
Huge outdoor patio with 40+ tables.
Not sure what there is to not like about this place.1 Previous Review: Show all »

I love it here. It is so pretty and they have misters which make it nice to sit outside when its scorching. We never sit inside because it's kind of ugly in there.
They have a great Saturday and Sunday brunch (buffet) which is totally worth your money because they have so many things to choose from! The last time we were there there was some kind of discount too so it made it an even better price!
They have sausage, biscuits and gravy, eggs (all different ways), hash browns, pancakes, waffles, and more as well as a ton of desserts!
I have also had a burger and fries here and it was great too! Highly recommend this place! But make sure to sit OUTSIDE! -

Los Angeles, CA
My only qualm about this place - sticky sticky handles on the tongs and serving spoons for brunch and that you couldn't tell which tong/spoon was for which food item unless it was jammed into the serving tray. Ech...
The brunch is average but pretty inexpensive, and the owners are a genuinely friendly older couple. There's some cleanliness issues (one of which I mentioned above) and our table wasn't wiped down when the hostess sat us down but not bad enough to make me not want to come back. We went a little later on after the Sunday brunch rush, and despite the few servers, they were quick to bring drinks and didn't rush us on the check. For brunch I liked their chilaquiles and potatoes and there was always full rashers of bacon along with desserts and this interesting meatball soup that I ended up really enjoying. I passed on the rest of the brunch offerings cuz they looked kinda unappetizing.
Other than that, the outdoor patio areas are nestled under trees, among a small pond, and is continually cooled by misters along the roof and railings by the tables. It's nicer sitting outside than it is inside, considering you're in the middle of the desert! But the view is great for enjoying cloud watching and enjoying the lovely way the light is diffused into the Palm Springs Valley area. I've never been to Italy or France before but I imagine this is the light that artists are always talking about.
I just slowed down and chilled out for awhile with my arnold palmer. It started to rain while it there was still full sunshine and but we were covered by the trees and the umbrellas that were covering all of the tables. The rain + the mist was a nice relief from the dry heat. If they had a hammock to nap after brunch, the outdoor patio would've been perfect-o.
All in all, while the food is okay, I really enjoyed the patio area. Check this place out for brunch at least once while you're in Palm Springs. October is a lovely time to visit. -

Love this place for breakfast. I was there Saturday and Sunday for the breakfast buffet. All the food was fresh, hot and had flavor. The owners seat you and are very welcoming. They have misters along all the railings.
I had eggs benedict, scrambled eggs with spinach (yum), fresh fruit, chocolate covered strawberries (lots of desserts), breakfast croissants, bacon, sausage - whatever you want. Coffee and juice is included with the buffet for $10 a person, all you can eat.
I'll be visiting again soon. -

We come down for a week every summer, and the Rock Garden is 30% off in the summer. We go here at least 3-4 times during our trip for breakfast and dinner. If the misters are not on when you drive up - they will turn them on if you want to sit outside. It is definitely worth the $$ and always has consistently good (if not a little greasy) food. The service is great - depending on the server. Not a fan of the swiss cheese - american processed version, just stick to feta or Greek specials. My husband loves the all you can eat buffet and soup. We go here for the price and the consistency and the amount of food. Love the breakfast potatoes - a carmelized onion/bell pepper mix.

I really, really don't understand the bad (hateful?) reviews here. My partner brought me here almost 2 months ago. I was in a horrible mood about the economy. By the time we finished our Sunday Brunch I actually felt like life might be worth living, seriously!
A very nice greeting as soon as we opened the door. Would you like to sit inside or on the Patio. We sat on the side patio which is a meandering Rock Garden, duh. It makes the tables seems nicely separated. Lots of shade trees.
I've been kinda over AYCE Sunday Brunch for a while now. So, I did my go check it out and let you know run through. I decided yeah I'm going for it. AYCE buffet kinda universally grosses my partner out so he ordered off the menu.
The Buffet brunch was one of the best I've ever had. Everything looked fresh and cooked in fairly small quantities to keep it fresh. My favorite was a kind of Breakfast Enchilada. The fried chicken was the only thing I tried that wasn't that good, but why did I even bother with it? There were alot of unique items. They had cold cuts and cheese for little deli sandwiches. Of course, fresh fruit and salad. The desserts were probably not made on-site but were really good also and lots of variety.
My partner ordered Cream Cheese stuffed french toast off the menu. Top with Bananas (or apple, or strawberry). It was also really good. He was very stealth about tasting a few of my brunch items and agreed how good it all was and would probably get the buffet brunch next time.
Service was good and very pleasant.
I wouldn't come here during the very hot off season since the patio dining is preferred IMO. -
Review from Sam O.
Redondo Beach, CA
Quick & Dirty: Decent breakfast and a huge outdoor patio that's nice and cool. Service is spotty, food is decent.
Long & Mediocre:
The Rock Garden Cafe has become a basic go-to spot for me and my family and friends. I'd rather go here than a Denny's or IHOP any day. it's location is easy and everyone knows where it is.
The patio here is pretty nice and there is shade everywhere. Do yourself a favor though and if you have the choice of where to sit, sit on the parking lot side. It's much quieter over there as opposed to the 111 side.
The food here (I can only speak about the breakfast) is just okay. I think it's pretty hard to mess up breakfast if you ask me. I've never been here for lunch or dinner. I've never sat inside, because to be quite honest, it looks depressing.
I read another Yelpers review where they mentioned the gawd awful Mimosas and I have to say I agree. It's like they use Orange Bang instead of just OJ. Their Bloody Mary's are nothing to write home about.
I do like coming here because I like the patio. The service has been good on some occasions and terrible on others. It's hit or miss.
Would I go here again? Sure, it's not great but it beats a lot of other places.
Should you go here? Yes, but sit outside and skip the buffet. It's kinda gross.

Really? Was this place sooo horrible for everyone else? Wow. Well... we came here in May 2008 and I have to say, I'd come back again and would recommend the place!
We arrived just before the rush at 11am. The hostess was an older woman who didn't have a list and as more people poured into the doors, I wondered how she was going to remember who was "next." I think that was the worst part of our breakfast that day because the rest of it was smooth sailing.
The orange juice was full of pulp and made for a delicious mimosa. My waffle was crispy and light.... though the blueberries were canned. The eggs benedict was good enough to order again and the hollandaise was decent.
We loved the outdoor seating and the mist-ers that were on overdrive. The waitress was not exactly miss personality but I was perfectly happy entertaining ourselves with all the people watching.
Yeah.
There's a lot of blue hair and crinkly faces.
Yeah.
This place was probably something else before it became the Rock Garden Cafe. But that's why we liked it.
We liked that their sign from the road looked like an old motel sign.
We liked that it had outdoor seating.
And we liked that for once in a long time.... we had a relaxed brunch with plenty of elbow room. No tables were scrunched up against us and we had a clear view of what was going on all around us.
The place reminded me a little of Miami.
No.
It was definitely Palm Springs.
Definitely. -

Glendale, CA
Breakfast was good, nothing spectacular, but maybe my expectations were lowered by being surrounded by a desolate wasteland. I did order the huevos rancheros though, and they made that right, although their salsa, albeit fresh, was one of the mildest I'd ever had, undoubtedly simmered down for the likes of the old people which reside in this suburban mad max town.
It's in a weird building; maybe it was an old motel or a giant mansion before. It looked like there was a swimming pool in the back.
The service wasn't that great, but they do leave a pitcher of iced tea or coffee depending on what you order so the waitresses don't have to come back as often. There's a nice patio that's shaded outside you can eat at, good in the morning, most likely boil your brains by noon.
If you think the service and food sucked, you probably shouldn't be in Palm Springs. Most things suck there. -

I ate at the Rock Garden Cafe with a large group while at Coachella. Breakfast was fantastic and the service was quick and excellent, despite our large and rowdy group.
I had the salmon scramble and fresh squeezed orange juice. (Nice and pulpy - yum!) Every other meal at our table of 8 was similarly excellent. I would highly recommend the Rock Garden as a brunch spot. -

We went here on my birthday on our way back home. We stopped in for a quick bite for breakfast.
Like another reviewer, I'd rather go to a place like this than a Denny's or IHop any day. I prefer local vendors and mom and pop places...whenever there are options.
Is the breakfast the best ever? Naw, it works its fine and the serving sizes are good. I'm glad to know about the Mimosa because I'd hate to spend the money and get something gross...haven't tried them and based on what's I've seen here in reviews...I won't.
We ate out on the patio under the misters and it was fine. The setting is nice out there with the trees, misters and little foot bridge, etc...
There are plenty of places you can go in PS for a higher end dining experience. This is clearly not one of those places, but it hits the spot and serves the purpose and I'd go here again in a pinch! -

Ok haters. You obviously didn't have the Chicken and Rice soup. OMG! Homemade doesn't do it justice. Yes the place is funky but that makes it interesting. I will agree some of the other stuff served is kind of ehh. It's alright. Chicken Caesar is ok, French Dip good flavor but a little dry (thankfully there is DIP!). Burgers have great buns but the meat is just ok. Frys are just right!
Overall an ok meal but the prices make it worth a try. We will come back or breakfast. -

Nothing distinguishing about the decor or the food in this place- lotsa rocks & a koi pond along the entry walk.
I went here 2 years in a row for a Christmas dinner with a dining group I belonged to at the time, I loathe turkey breast and opted for salmon both years. The dinner was good, salmon cooked perfectly, & welcomed after hearing all the complaints about the turkey meal. I recently had lunch there al fresco with another group and had an unremarkable steak san with a tough overcooked 3/8" cut of meat I'd ordered medium rare.
I may go there again. -

Leaving this restaurant right now due to the fact that the server would not serve me alcohol because my hair color is not the same as the picture on my ID. I'm a 28 year old female, not someone who just turned 21. I can not believe that just happened. I have been questioned on my ID before but when I produce something else with my name on it, such as a credit card, its fine. I wouldn't go there if you're under the age of 40. It's not a friendly place to young people.

Went here on a whim for breakfast because I had an appointment close by. The food was better then the place looked if that makes sense. I had the seafood omelette and my mom had a chili rellano omelette and they were both fine. The food came out quick and hot too.
No doubt this place needs a boost in food and decore but if you happen to be in the area and you don't have a lot of time to look around for places to eat, this place will certainly do. -

We have been there twice for breakfast. Hubby had the brunch and I ordered the basic breakfast. We thought the food was tasty and the service friendly and prompt. Only thing is, the whole place could use a good dusting and cleaning. There are plastic plants inside that are pretty dirty. The umbrellas outside are super faded. Again, the breakfast was a good deal.

This place is due for a makeover. They should really think about tearing out the mauve carpet & matching vinyl booths.
They have a huge patio outside, and the misters were on full blast at 8:30am when we arrived for breakfast.
The eggs, bacon, & pancakes were nothing to write home about, but it was a good deal for $5.00. -

Breakfast on a Patio...
The Rock Garden Cafe offers a good and hearty breakfast line up that will please most visitors. All the basics are available with a few surprises. The unique omelet options and array of baked goods certainly puts this cafe a notch above other close by options.
There is a huge parking lot that makes getting in and out of the cafe a snap. The cafe is huge and deals well with the crowds that come for breakfast.
There is a buffet options for those needing mass quantities of standard fare to fill themselves for the day. I stay away from this option, but we know others who swear by it.
Ham and eggs is a great staple here. Look for the daily special and you will save your bucks and still get a quality breakfast.... -

This place has the potential to be one of the best restaurants in Palm Springs. It has one of the largest outside eating areas in Palm
Springs which is one of the reasons that I come here. However, the food and service have been on a steady downhill decent. Everyone who works here seems like they want to be some where else. The cranky old man behind the cash register and the slow waitress sure seemed to not want to be there, neither did the over worked bus boy. The food was below average and forget about getting refills on water or soda, It would be ashame to see this once great place close like so many Palm Springs restaurants have.1 Previous Review: Show all »

I've been living in the Palm Springs area for over a year now, and one of my favorite places is the Rock Garden Cafe. It's especially good for breakfast and my favorite for lunch is the steak sandwich. The owners and staff are very friendly and I love being able to sit outside with my dogs. Prices are very reasonable and they even offer a 30% off your food items. Can't beat that !!!

Was dead...what few people that were there were in their 80's for the "special". I wanted something to eat but was too scared after the old bartender said "you want some fried chicken? The cook has some". Sat there and drank my drink. Waited 30 minutes for him to come back, but never did. I ended up just leaving some money for the drink...have no idea if it was enough but really don't care.

If I could give this place no stars I would but Yelp won't let me. This place is absolutely terrible!! Saying the service sucked would be giving them too much credit. The incompetent staff forgot half of our party's order and didn't even seem to realize it. Definitely the worst Mimosa I have ever had. I can't comment on the food because I never received my order, but according to the people at our table that actually got their food, they claimed the food was inedible. I could go on and on but to keep things short...just don't go here.
