love the rockfish. yummy food, good beer on tap, and 3 floors of fun.
where the cool kids hang out in newburyport.
Grabbed a bite here on a sunday afternoon. I ordered the raw bar sampler - 3 shrimp cocktails, 3 Island Creek Oysters, and 3 pretty big cherrystones for $10. Thats a good deal in my book. The missus ordered the sliders. This one was a mix of 1 steak tip slider, a fried haddock slider, and a cuban sandwich slider. None of those three were really any good. They're on dinner rolls not sandwich rolls for starters, so they're very bready sliders. I only tried a bite of each, but they just didn't have anything going for them. A bit dry. I'm not sure if there was anything other than fried fish between the bread. I think the steak tip had a bit of american cheese on it. The other slider plate was 3 burgers, each with a different cheese. Not a culinary hot spot.
But I guess this place is more of a bar/club type place so the fact that we were 1 of 2 in our order was probably all we could ask for. No Ipswich on tap, so they get docked a star.
First and foremost- this is the only decent restaurant open late on a Sunday in Newburyport. My girlfriend and I have been here twice - we ordered the sliders both times - and both times they did not disappoint. There are three floors of entirely different atmospheres. The first floor was way too noisy, the second floor was way too quiet, but the third floor was just right... plus the second time we visited they had some nice live acoustic music too.
OK, so the Rockfish only has one pool table, but even one table is one more than any other place in downtown Newburyport.
It's a three-floor bar, restaurant, and lounge complex; with food and drink served on the first and third floors, and the lone billiard players milling about on the second floor with a TV. There are no TVs on the third (at least I don't think there are), but the first floor is where the action is, with a widescreen HD TV over the bar and a few side TVs.
The food is good. Don't go crazy on the entrees, but the appetizers and daily specials are usually tasty. A fair beer selection, too, with both tap and bottle. The Rockfish has a full bar.
Did I mention the jukebox and people watching? And the fact the Rockfish kitchen closes every week night at midnight, a good hour after the nearest competition?
I've been here a few times for food and drink. I'm really not sure what to make of it. The crowd is kind of all over the place...from monied, to....not so much. The food was decent, but nothing spectacular. Some middle aged gentleman who was there with his cougarish ladyfriend started buying us drinks for no reason....maybe you'll luck out and he'll be there when you stop by.
Was a patron of Rock Fish on a cool October afternoon this last year - And at the time had a very good lunch - The clam chowder was hot and Sam Adams was on special. Mix the two with a football game on TV and the afternoon was quite enjoyable.
This past weekend I was up in Newburyport again to spend an afternoon and decided to give it another go around - Was again very satisfied with my meal and dining experience, I took away, however, a few note-worthies that I thought I would pass along.
Service: A bit slow both times. It was fortunate that neither time we were in a rush, but it was noticeable as the drinks seemed to dry up, and the meal took a while to come. The place seems understaffed, the Host/Bar Keep/Waiter was doing it all - and I say slow, but I think for what it was he did all he could, and the whole time he was very polite.
Seating: Both times found a seat no problem. Right by the window.
Food: Different menu on second visit, but maintained my same opinion on it. Pretty Creative for the setting and everything I have tried (My 2, plus GF's 2) has been very good with one exception in which I will get to.
To start, I think their clam chowder is some of the best in the area. For lunch I went with three mini sandwiches. The rolls used on these were absolutely delicious - I was amazed. The innards (fish, steak tip, cuban) were all done quite well, and satisfied my palette more than a bar usually would.
The GF's meal was the special, as recommended by the keep. It was a chicken sandwich, smothered with Cheese, Mushrooms, and Peppers. The concept was there and the pieces were there to build a serious sandwich, but the execution lacked and way too much cheese drowned out the flavors of the otherwise tasty chicken.
Overall I would frequent this place when in Newburyport... not a ton to do, but the food in this place is pretty much worth the trip. The beautiful thing about this country, and about Yelp, is that this is just an opinion so give it a try yourself!
