I've been seeing various optometrists as I've moved around for 13 years. Dr. Slamovitch ran tests that I have never seen run anywhere else, and took the time to explain to me the purpose and results of each test.

When I first visited her I had just begun a new job with a new health insurance plan, and I wasn't sure how I was supposed to pay for the appointment. Dr. Slamovitch told me that I didn't have to pay right away, that I could go speak to my provider and call her back within a couple days to take care of payment.

I had laser eye surgery a year ago and need to provide documentation to the surgeon on a regular basis regarding the status of my eye exams. Dr. Slamovitch offered to contact the surgeon's office (in Canada) to determine what documentation was necessary and provide it to them on my behalf.

She really went above and beyond. I recommend her to all of my friends.

Just wanted to add yet another great review for Rochelle Slamovich. I went to her after having not been to an eye doctor for a few years. Dr. Slamovich did not berate me for having worn the same pair of contact lenses for over two years (though she did make sure to throw them away after giving me new ones to try).

Everything was very clean. I never had to wait long, and never felt rushed. I've interacted with other office staff and they've all been friendly and able to help. Dr. Slamovich gave me a business card with her email address, and I have e-mailed her when eye-related issues have come up. She has early morning appointments and late afternoon appointments. Prices (both for services and eye products) are reasonable and competitive.

I recommend Dr. Slamovich to all who need an eye doctor. Unless she presented me with a pet unicorn or something else equally unrealistic, there is nothing Dr. Slamovich could do to be a better doctor.

I've worn glasses for years and I've never felt my prescription was quite right. Finally I found a doctor that not only takes the time to explain what's going on with your eyes but also takes the time to make sure your prescription is perfect. Her receptionist is also pretty awesome too.

Be warned about one thing, security downstairs is on HIGH ALERT when it comes to... Bicycles. If you ride a bike don't try and take it in the building security treated me like I walked in with a machete. I was really upset and irritated (this is the building rules not the doctors rules) and the receptionist fitted me on the street and that's pretty awesome in my book, above and beyond.

I will be going back and I will be referring my friends.

The eye exam was easy, quick, relaxed. Dr. Slamovich is cool, understated, subtle sense of humor, she doesn't try too hard to ingratiate herself with you (so, of course, she does so effortlessly). She answers your questions very patiently, with the right amount of detail. Best part: she emailed me the pictures of my retina.

Dr. Slamovich is great. Thank you to the others for the reviews. You were right. The eye exam was "easy, quick, and relaxed" as mentioned. I'm not big on having my eyes messed with but she totally put me at ease and seemed to genuinely care about me and all my questions.

I've been seeing Dr. Chan here for a couple years, and I've dealt with Dr. Slamovich on the phone a couple times. Both of them and their staff are everything you'd expect from an OD: friendly, professional, experienced, etc.

Since I have (and they take my) insurance, the cost of the exam is only a small deductible.

The downsides are minor, and I'd give them a 4.5 if I could...
    * Their contact lens prices are not at all competitive. For example, the set of 8 boxes I purchased after my last visit would have cost about $250 ($150 out-of-pocket after $100 from my insurance), here. Instead, I got the same contacts online for under $100. So, I apply my insurance towards glasses/lenses and pay for the contacts out of HSA. This pretty much applies to any optometrist, though.
    * Their frames selection is bit small -- less than half the size of a couple previous optometrists I've been to. And I think maybe only 1/4 of the selection is for men.

I gladly return, and you wouldn't regret coming here, either.

I have been going to Dr. Slamovich and Chan for ... um... more than a decade.  I have always been impressed with their knowledge, bedside manner and how they advocate for what is right for me as an individual.   I have never felt rushed, insignificant or less than thrilled with their service.  I go to them even though my health plan covers optometry.  They are that good.

Last month, I received some disturbing news about my son.  I didn't get enough answers from Kaiser, the eye person there didn't answer my questions well, so I called Dr. Slamovich and left a message.

Dr. Chan ended up spending quite a bit of time with me on the phone helping me understand my son's diagnosis and I am truly grateful.

Very impressed by the service I have always received in their office.

I hate doctors. All of them; dentists, ObGyns, general practitioners, witch doctors, acupuncturists, chiropractors....the whole lot of them.

I get nauseous just thinking about going in for something as simple as antibiotics when I am sick. This makes me feel more sick that I originally was, thus the need for a doctor being obsolete since at this point they have not only managed to not make me better but in the process of me making an appointment have actually managed to make me feel worse.

I hate doctors enough that I have convinced myself that this sort of rationale for not seeing a doctor is a sane one.

So, if you think an optometrist is an exception whoa Nellie, because they are as awful as the rest in my chickenshit little head!

They make you do tests that you are sure you are going to fail even though your eyesight is not that bad,  poke at your eyes, put drops in them that make the sun seem like he is Satan and he is personally after your retinas for some unspeakable thing they did.

Then they get SUPER annoyed when you really do not know if the first chart or second chart out of 5000 looks more clear and you might need to see them again to be sure because these are your eyes and you are going to have to live with whatever prescription is determined in this series of tests for the next full year and you want to be sure option 1 is clearer than option 2 so can you PLEASE JUST SEE THEM ONE MORE TIME BEFORE YOU HAVE A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN AND DECIDE NOT SEEING  AT ALL IS PREFERABLE TO EVER GOING TO ANOTHER DOCTORS OFFICE AGAIN!!!

Well, not Dr Slamovich. She keeps up with technology and this eliminates the need for so many tests, so when you do need to see option A and B for the fourth time because you are neurotic, nervous and paranoid about picking the wrong thing she is happy to oblige. She explains everything to you, is relaxed and has the ability to converse with you in a way that puts you at ease. She also keeps her prices fair and gets you your product quickly.

Who knew an anti-nausea remedy came free with my contacts! Thanks Dr Slamovich!!

I visited Dr. Slamovich for the first time last week for a routine eye exam and prescription update.  She provided exactly what I'm looking for in an Optometrist visit:

    - nice, quiet and no-frills upstairs office
    - quick service, no waiting around
    - pleasant & professional demeanor
    - not sales-y (said my existing prescription is more than enough, no need to get new glasses unless I really want new frames)
    - said i could skip the dilation this year since my eyes looked otherwise fine and have not changed
    - takes VSP
    - decent selection of frames
    - when i asked, took the time to suggest some frames that look good on my face, but didn't push them

    I'll be back next year.

I give them 5-stars x 10! After living in the Bay Area for 8 years and trying many eye doctors, I can confidently say that Dr. Slamovich is the best. I've been going to her for about 3 years now and no complains (on either sides!).

    1. She is friendly, personable, welcomes you with a smile and talks to you like you were sitting in her living room.

    2. Very professional yet not pushy when it comes to making a sale. Let's you peruse the collection at your own pace, try out the frames and is always happy to give an opinion if asked for.

    3. Very knowledgeable and glad to dispense information about eye care.

    4. I'm an Art Director and love the two frames I've purchased from her. They have a great collection that is simple and not overwhelming, yet stylish. Just got contacts from there and I'm a happy camper.

    5. Her staff are just as good and are happy to make appointments, change appointments (I request appointment changes 6 times due to sickness and they were so good about it) and help you any way they can.

    6. Get my eyes checked there as well and she's not the kind to suggest changes or anything else unless absolutely necessary.

    7. You cannot beat walking into the great art deco building and the classy elevator... looks like the set of an old 1950s movie!

    8. They take VSP.

I give Dr. Slamovich my thumbs up!

If I could give Dr. Slam ten stars, I would.

First, and most importantly, Dr. Slam is the best eye doctor I've ever been to (and as I've been 4-eyes for nearly my whole life, that's a lotta doctors). She, very literally, saved my vision before I ever knew it was threatened.

Turns out that I've got a fairly hard to detect bit of glaucoma, and if it weren't for Dr. Slam investing in her visual field machine (an extra test I'd never had before...), it may well have gone undiagnosed until...well, I hate to think about that...so let's keep our happy face on, shall we?

Secondly, she's fabulous and is like your favorite auntie that will tell it like it is. She'll spot the frames you should try (including ones you might never even consider), and will give her unabashed opinion--both good and bad. Then she'll figure out exactly how much your insurance covers, and she'll make sure you're getting the best value for your money.

    In short, she's a mensch.

Rochelle is so skilled. I got the best prescription I have ever had from her. She also has an awesome selection of frames and I felt that the way she fit them to me and to my daughter was really thoughtful and that we both wound up with glasses that were really really comfortable and really really flattering!

She's interesting and has a pleasant manner as well. I really like seeing her. I think you will too.

Dr. Slamovich is the best because 1) I NEVER wait for an appointment, 2) she works hard to make sure I get the most out of my insurance (she got me "medically necessary" contacts I didn't have to pay for because I have a really strong prescription), 3) she treats me like a real person, 4) she is efficient and knowledgable.  I highly highly recommend her for any of your eyecare needs.

I ended up at my first optometry exam since sixth grade (no exaggeration, circa 1990) thinking I had a brain tumor due to some right-eye pain and headaches in my right temple.  I did not mention my self-diagnosed brain tumor to Dr. Slamovich in so many words, but she apparently sees enough of my hypochondriac kind that she read me like a book, immediately saying "Brain tumors are very, very rare."  I hadn't even SAID "brain tumor!"

Anyway, we proceeded through my first eye exam as an adult.  It was painless (friends had warned me about a test in which air is blown at one's eyes, but that didn't happen), intriguing and, dare I say, FUN.  Dr. Slamovich told me why she was doing each test, what each test was designed to measure, and WHY it was a more or less reliable test.  I also got to see an image of the back of my eye AND learned that I belong to the 25% of the population with an extra artery in my eye that will possibly prevent blindness if I have a stroke or aneurysm and survive that.  WILD!  It was my own little Discovery Channel right there on Market St.

The right-eye issues turned out to be an astigmatism in that eye only.  I walked away with a prescription that Dr. Slamovich made sure to emphasize was not technically necessary (since I still have 20/20 vision using both eyes), but the lens test alleviated my eye strain so much that I went for it.  They have cute and affordable glasses on premises and advised me well on the style front. (I now want about 11 pairs of glasses, including a $350 pair by Balenciaga, but oh, isn't that what FSAs are for?).

Dr. Slamovich also made time for me right before going on vacation and was efficient: I was in and out in exactly 60 minutes for a full new-patient eye exam and getting glasses fitted.  With my vision insurance I paid $98 for everything (glasses and lenses included).  What a pleasant change from the usual half-day-off-work doctor's appointment.

I will now do my best not to visit here once a month just for fun, or to ask for cool new photos of my optic nerve and eye-backs.

I will never see another eye doctor while I live in SF again. Dr. Chan was great as well, I had to go back to get my eyes dilated at the end of the day. She was just as knowledgable and easy to talk to as Dr. Slamovich.

"Yay, I'm a fan". She's the only eye doctor I've been to in the Bay Area -- for about 6 years now. Straightforward, efficient, organized, keeps up with current studies, explains current studies, treats you like you do actually own your health, takes pictures of your retinas and sends them to you via email, business-like, down-to-earth, reasonable fees, apologizes if she (rarely if ever) makes a mistake, engaged, effective, nice, great sense of humor, excellent staff. I've recommended her to tons of people.

I'm a visual arts professional.  And, yes, even designers needs their eyes checked from time to time.  Rochelle makes certain mine have the correct focus.  Both she and her staff are highly professional and helpful.  Example: I was looking for a particular style of sunglasses, but I couldn't find what I was looking for in their showroom. I described what I was after and one of her staff told me she knew just the style and told me she would order it and call me when it came in - with no obligation to buy.  She called me, I came back, and these glasses were exactly what I was looking for!  Extrasensory perception - top that for having an optometrist.

Dr. Slamovich is the best in the city.  She just does what she does best - diagnose the current state of your eyesight.  She never pushes you to buy the most expensive frames, or try contacts that you don't need.  I've been going to her for years and even though I had moved to New York City for 10 years, she was still my "main" optometrist and made sure I'd go in for a yearly check-up with her whenever I was in town.
