GARLIC BALLS!
i rarely venture to la anymore, but when i used to, i always knew where to get some tasty pizza and garlic balls.
now, i have never searched for a garlic ball in this wonderful city of san francisco, but it just doesn't seem like a popular thing around sf. perhaps it is around here and i have yet to discover it. i guess that can easily be changed, i shall discover and spread the word! wait, i don't think i want them to get extremely popular though... that could result in a poorly made garlic ball. fuck that! i want consistency and good quality! oh my, that was a little rant that shall stay inside (but seriously, don't you hate when things become commercial and then the quality goes down? I DO!)

anyway, if i were ever to go back to la (i have no idea why i ever would!), i would definitely make a stop in the canyon for some garlic balls...

p.s. this may be the only good thing in la.

First of all I would like to say that one star is being far too kind. I wish I could give Rocco's negative stars but Yelp will not let me. Rocco's was formerly owned by the gracious Frank Rocco who was very passionate about his authentic Italian cuisine. I was a huge fan of Rocco's and would recommend anyone to go there for a delicious meal. Unfortunately, Rocco's went under a change of ownership and now I am sorry to say that the restaurant is no longer enjoyable to eat at. Apart from the sub caliber food and over pricing, the atmosphere is less than inviting. I recently went for what I thought would be a delightful meal but ended up being a nightmare filled with rudeness, stray hairs and mediocre food that was cold to the touch. To sum it all up, my overall experience with Rocco's In the Canyon was equivalent to wiping my anus with the rough end of a pineapple.

I'm babysitting my cousins in Topanga Canyon tonight, so we got some food delivered from Rocco's. My first thought when I heard the total was how expensive it was... and how much I hoped that the food would live up to it.

...And well, I don't think the quality justifies the pricing. I'm really hoping the pizza is better piping hot straight from the oven in the restaurant, because it really wasn't that great when I tried it. The pepperoni on the pepperoni ONLY pizza was almost non-existent, and the cheese was just so plain and lacked any real taste. Although I really liked the thin crust, the rest of the pizza wasn't all that legit.

I also had the pesto tortellini. It was good, just nothing special.

BUT THE GARLIC KNOTS! those were bomb. lots of garlic and cooked in oil so that the first bite has almost a crunch into the fluffy center. Delicious. Loved them.

So in sum, if you are in Topanga and craving some Italian, its not a bad choice, its just nothing special. Good Luck!

Rocco's will always be my favorite pizza.  It is stupidly expensive, but to-die-for delicious.  The ambiance is pure Topanga.  The garlic bread is divine.  You will love it.

Vegan Report: They make the best cheeseless broccoli pizza in the world.

sooo after an afternoon of hiking and being one with nature, what should you eat? PIZZA!!!!!!

we're all sweaty and dirty from the trail and as we round the corner heading for the front door we see a scary old man and a huge dog. he seems to be eyeing us up and im all ready to bring it should he sic Cujo on us. then he busts out "Hi! come on in." Crisis averted.   i put my throwing stars away  "Hello." and we go into a cozy dining room.

Sierra Nevada on tap, plenty of others available in bottles.  we got one carnivore pizza (rocco's special) and a veggie combo. each pizza came was topped with chopped broccoli (?!), not only that but it was mainly the stems, not the florets. a little odd but it was still good. our group thought rocco's special was a little light on the meaty goods but everyone luved the garlic knots. tons o'garlic and olive oil slathered over delicious little warm rolls  - we all left with some kicking breath.

the place seems pretty popular with the locals the pizza isnt the big floppy slices that i covet but it was tasting pretty dang good after trekking to Eagle Rock.  the dining room/restroom set up is a little weird: whoever put that table near the door wasnt  thinking of the feng shui. you whack the person sitting there when you try to get to the bathrooms.

Casual place with decent food - it's nothing outstanding, but if you're in the canyon and craving pizza, it's a great choice. To-go service is much quicker than sitting at a table on a Friday. The people working there are awesome - really nice and friendly. They give you a head's up in the menu that the food could take awhile, and they are absolutely correct. I'm still on the fence as to if the food taking so long is worth it.
