Should I even admit I was even here?? Yes! I had to do alittle research about this motel. Growing up seeing this name, I always wondered who "Roberts" was. Shorty Roberts a famous jockey who owned a restaurant of the same name turn of the century San Francisco.
This aging structure was built in 1955. There are two stories and 34 units. I made note of the cleanliness and even checked to make sure after I left that it was NOT on the bedbug list. I would still use my sleeping bag. I don't trust the bed linen.
They do offer little refrigerators, coffee pots, microwaves and cable in the rooms. There is FREE parking. The towels were rough and worn. I laughed at the old school "cashmere bouquet" soaps. There is a vending machine but there are cafes and a good liquor store up the street.
Yeah it was grungy. It is so close to the Sloat/ Great Highway beach and SF Zoo. The cost was right. -

I felt I had to write a negative review... So, let me relate one of the most negative experiences I've ever had as it relates to a business, product or service.
But first let me tell you some fun facts about Roberts-at-the-beach Motel. It is located next door to the Doggie Diner, which has the "landmark" dog's head on a stick sign made (I guess) famous by the comic strip Zippy... which has never once made me laugh. I think Zippy is supposed to be on a permanent acid trip. Else he has some kind of psychotic condition. In any event, sometimes in his existential and boring travels he talks to this doggy diner mascot. Moving on.
There is an awesome nursery also right next to RATBM.
It's next to the SF Zoo, if captive animals stir-crazy from boredom and jerks looking at them is something that interests you.
The Muni makes a U-turn next to RATBM and if you request the end room, you can watch the drivers get off, use the restroom, get a paper, drink some coffee from their thermos, do the crossword, and basically ensure that they wait long enough so their train is late to every stop on their route.
It is also right next to Ocean Beach... does that turn ya on?
OK, now the real story. My wife and I decided to stay there one night since there was a party in the city we knew we couldn't drive back from. We weren't yet married and I didn't realize how negatively some women view staying at a "dive." I'd known RATB was not the Hilton, but I had memories of it being acceptable and clean. And right next to the Muni Line.
So when we checked in, we were helped by a 12-year-old girl behind the counter. There wasn't an adult in sight. No big deal. We go to our room. It's dark, small, reasonably clean, with an old and small TV, and a remote control that is screwed to the night stand. I'm fine. My future-wife is beginning to show signs of panic... I reassure her that it's just a cheap motel, and we'll be fine.
We go to our party. We get back to our room around 12 midnight. There is a loud party going on in a room two doors to the right of ours. Apparently some teenagers got a room and were throwing a party. I thought OK no biggy. The kids are just having fun. Let's go to bed.
Well, in about 30 minutes, the sounds of a party turned into the sounds of a heated argument with about ten participants. The arguing parties spilled outside the room, right outside our door. The tone of the argument became ever louder and more hostile and the next thing I expected was gun-fire, or someone throwing a molotov cocktail into our room. I was alarmed and needless to say my future-wife was contemplating whether our relationship was worth pursuing.
Well, after a few minutes, half of the arguers left and screeched off in a Ford Mustang... It's always a Mustang. I have a new marketing slogan for Ford: Ford Mustang: Because You're an A&&hole Teenager.
About 20 minutes later, the Mustang pulls up outside the parking lot, blaring some gangsta rap symphony or other. The occupants began yelling and taunting. I guess it was meant for the people in the party room, but I didn't feel like taking any chances.
I called SFPD and explained what was going on and in short order a black-and-white was there. Some of the kids ran off, while some stayed. My guess is the Mustang owner had just enough sense to realize that if he left his car there... they'd figure out who he was.
By the time the cops left, and the party was broken up, it was about 3am. My nerves were shot. My fair lady was very, very upset... with me. So that was when I learned two things:
1) this woman I love will put up with a lot less bu11$hit than I will, and I better get used to paying for nicer stuff
2) never, ever, ever stay at Roberts-At-The-Beach -

Ive stayed here twice, once two years ago.... and I forgot an expensive ring (400.00) on the tv and I called and they mailed it to me...
its clean, divey for sure but I had no problem
its 70.00 a night which kind of makes it ok that it looks straight out of 1960, and it looks like it has not been updated at all since then.....or painted .......
so 3 stars for being cheap, very clean and when I was there both times I felt safe. -

RATBM? Must stand for Rat Bomb.
I don't care if the place looks like it hasn't changed since 1960. Decor doesn't matter. Nasty carpet does matter. I couldn't stand the feel of sleeping within the sheets. I questioned whether I was getting cleaner or dirtier in the shower.
There's an air of not-safe about it. I locked the useless chain and placed a chair and all the luggage against the door so something would make noise if anyone tried to come in. Don't do this to yourself.
The person at check-in was nice. -

very quick!!! don't stay here or any other motels on the ocean except for one...roberts used to be an old 60's/70's motel...rooms were very clean (that scent of a good clean motel) fresh linen/towels/pillows..extra pillows and blankies if needed...the bathroom tile..immaculate..!!! now it is (as all the others along ocean beach) owened by patels!!! they don't care about their guests..bring a leash for the bedbugs..way back it was a "mom & pop" motel..no ammenties per say (just clean & comfy) the occaisonal tryst/clandestine affair would take place...my wife and grew up in the neighborhood and would stay here if too tired to walk home...the original doggie diner closed years ago..as did bbq..the coffee shop 2 blocks away is c-...pasquales pizzeria still intact but the same quality...this motel is far below acceptable for the price

Not a bad motel. The two times I've been here, I've been trashed. In high school I threw a small hotel party here. I guess the neighbors didn't mind since the cops never got called on us. From what I remember, Roberts was clean for the most part and is decent depending on what you need it for (partying on a budget was my need). If you want to throw a hotel party or continue partying all night long, stop by Roberts for a stay. It's not bad, they have tv's and chinese and pizza both deliver there 24 hours.
