Upon moving to San Diego, I heard all the hype over the Roberto's taco shops, and quite frankly, I'm disappointed. Not just in this one, but in other locations as well. Yes, it's cheap. Yes, it's fast. Yes, it is edible. But that is about it. Oh, and I'm not a big fan of being asked out by the guy working the drive-thru window: awkward.

I don't know how exactly it happened, but over the course of three days in San Diego, I ordered food from a Roberto's three times. Once a day, and always at the end of that day... the first two were taken back to the hotel to pad the stomach after a long day of drinking, and the last just before heading to the airport to fly back north. How is this possible? Seems that you can hardly drive a few miles along a major road in San Diego and not come across one. So... ultimately, it was laziness and the imperative of the situation that dictated this behavior.
It was this location that served my last San Diego meal. Having eaten at Tractor Room earlier in the day, I actually had no appetite when we ordered, so everything was to go... to go 600 miles north, that is.
Some 42 hours after being ordered, I finally sat down and ate my burritos: one chicken and one carne asada. Frankly, and to my surprise, the chicken was better. They messed up my order somewhat; I requested "no guacamole" (for fear that it wouldn't travel well), but I got it anyway (and pleasantly, it did travel well after all).
I feel like I haven't gotten the best burritos that San Diego has to offer. I liked what I ate, and I can certainly see why people love San Diego burritos. But the next time that I come down, I'm going to make an extra effort to find someplace a little better. Roberto's hasn't convinced me to give up my San Francisco burrito yet.

I don't know if it was the tortilla, or just the simple perfection of the insides of the carnitas burrito, but I'm officially a convert. San Diego's burritos are just better than what ends up being a sloppy mess in San Francisco. We also had the carne asada and beans and cheese, but the carnitas burrito was definitely the best. And at about $12 for 4, how can you really go wrong?

Day 3 of the memorial day/calforina burrito coming out of my ears tour...
It is the gold standard of california burritos. Nothing else to say. Perfect with 2 little thingamajigs of salsa verde.

Seriously folks? 4-5 stars?
Let's be frank. Roberto's is one thing and one thing only (well, one thing of the following list depending on who is in line to eat): Low budget, dear god I'm gonna die if I don't eat RIGHT NOW, I'm so drunk I desperately need to put something in my face besides booze so I can proceed to crashing house parties, or "dude, totally, just got out of a gnarly sesh and need some tacos, dude".
It's low budget. Cheeeeeaaap. Some days, you get more than what you paid for. Some days, you get exactly that. Ask for the extras (guac, salsa fresca, sour cream, etc) to make your food a little better. Cross your fingers on the carnitas. Sometimes gristly, often not.
There's nothing WRONG with Roberto's except that classifying it as a 5 star joint to eat is pretty much a lie. It's a taco stand. A decent one (yes, decent - barely), but a taco stand all the same. Just because it's the only place open at an ungodly hour and you hit it up at least 2 times a week, doesn't convince me it needs a grip of "starring".
That being said, I'd probably have rated it a 5 after a belly rolling full of california burrito and some rolled tacos, written at 4:45am on a Saturday morning. But my grammar would have been atrocious.

Tasty,,,open late,,,drive through! I used to hit this place for breakfast on the way to work at least twice a week. The breakfast burrito with eggs and chorizo is spicy and delicious! Consistent spot to get your Mexican fix early or late. Great place to stumble to on your way home!

This is the guarantee: Even when other restaurants in OB close down so the employees can smoke out, this place stays open. It's a cheesy drive-through but the rolled tacos are good, and the carne asada is hot and sometimes that's all you need.

If you're drunk and desperately need a burrito, go to Roberto's. If not, then don't. For the best Mexican food that's fast and cheap go to Ortega's Mexican Buffet and Pizzeria. Read the review here: http://www.yelp.com/bi...

After a long surf sesh at OB pier what better way to refuel than to roll on into Roberto's numero 11?? My stoner brother that lives in a van introduced me to this place....typical san diego mexican fare...but done well. My only complaint is the horchata, too watery for my taste. There's a horse shoe drive thru and a couple of tables outside if you want to eat there but I suggest taking your grub up to sunset cliffs and feeding your face while sitting on the cliffs..uh, during the sunset, bro. bueno.
