This is your Italian grandmother's food if your Italian grandmother had the imagination and taste of a master chef. Some of the names of the dishes may be familiar, but the taste is nothing that you've ever experienced.

Seriously, this is one of the best Italian restaurants I've been to!

We got there at 5:30pm on a Saturady night, it was already packed and had to wait 45 minutes for a table (they don't take reservations). Let me tell you, it was more than worth the wait!

Our table had a few different kinds of pasta, a seafood risotto, chicken marsala, zucchini parmegiano and a few other things that I can't remember. But what I do remember is how great everything tasted.

So, if you want a great Italian experience, get your butt to Arthur Avenue in the Bronx and go to Roberto's. Prepare to wait. But it'll definitely be worth it.

My boyfriend and I have absolutely no negative after visiting Roberto's.  We went here this evening for my birthday and thoroughly enjoyed our evening here.  We got in right away (a Wednesday evening around 7:00) although were expecting a wait based on prior reviews.  Our waiter explained that it was quiet due to the Jewish holiday.

We had a shrimp, scallop and potato appetizer that was absolutely wonderful.  For an entree, I had the fettuccini with freshly shaved black truffle.  It was to DIE for.  It was light for an alfredo, but with all the taste.  And all the pasta here is freshly made, and you can definitely tell the difference!  My boyfriend had the cauliflower seafood risotto and absolutely loved his dish as well.

Besides the food being great, our service was exceptional.  Our food was promptly removed and delivered, our waters and wine were refilled right away, and we even received free lemoncello shots at the end of our meal :)  I couldn't have asked for a better dinner experience!!!!!!

Visiting little italy for the first time,  I saw the reviews and decided to have dinner here.

The soup choice (chicken spinach & pasta fagoli) was excellent but the main dishes could have been better. I had tubillini pasta with clams and calamari, the bf had italian sasuage pasta and we were both not impressed. the prices are high (even in nyc) for this kind of meal and the server didnt seem to care that neither of us really liked the dishes.

i was pretty hungry afterwards even though the bill came to $100 so i was desperate enough to get a subway sandwich shop white choc macadamia cookie and i talked to a local guy....he said "robertos gets alot of reviews but the food isnt worth the price" this guy suggested i go to emilias (or emilios?) restaurant. anyways i guess if i come back to the area, that would be the place I would try.

p.s no amex and the downstairs is freezing!! ladies bring a jacket!

food is really great and traditional without the same boring options. For an appetizer my boyfriend and I shared the grilled calamari salad which was so fresh and delicious. For dinner I had seabass with mussels and clams and the portion was so huge i took half of the fish home. I think this is definitely the place where you order family style and share a few dishes amongst a few people. Everything was really great and I this place is my new go to in Litlle Italy

Gees, this place is GOOD.  CRIED when the risotto with yellow beets special hit my mouth.  And then a thick linguine dish with sopressata, peas, egg, cheese baked in TIN FOIL.  And branzino with a fresh tomato sauce...perfect SAVORY, not salty.  And then spoonfuls TOGETHER of tartufo and capuccino.  Wonderful service...and no overselling.  Oh, and this smoky AGLIANICO wine.  GLORIOUS meal, perfect dim lighting, really intimate and yet festive atmosphere.  Thank you, Roberto from Salerno, for making my first trip to the Bronx's Little Italy a FABULOUS one!

My family and I decided to stop in one night for a nice family dinner, however, it was not very nice.  We own an apartment building near by and decided to finally come in...It was pretty crowded and the wait staff did not seem to speak good English.  Their main ingredient seems to be salt...and LOTS of it.  Everything we ate, tasted too salty.  It was too overpowering that I had to send back my Bass.  The only think I really did enjoy was the complimentary bread assortment...

There really is no point for me to ever eat Italian elsewhere ever again. Next time I'm in Italy, maybe I'll eat Japanese food! j/k

But seriously, Roberto's is hands down the best Italian food I've ever had in my life! And that includes comparing it to Italian food in Italy! Both times I've been there, I have ordered the same entree, unable to stray away from its heavenly goodness: Homemade fettuccine with an entire truffle shaved across it, followed by a dousing of a 5-year old Romano. Pretty sure I have never tasted something so glorious in my life and will never again.

Try not to fill up on their ridiculously sumptuous Arthur Avenue bread served with their house brand extra virgin olive oil because you must save those precious cubic inches in your stomach for the main course!! Even then, you must save some room for dessert as well. Their tartufo is to die for!

Now, I've sat at the bar and in the main dining room and was once lucky enough to sit in the coveted wine cellar! Beg the hostess to seat you there because it only enhances the experience. Unfortunately they don't take reservations, so it is a bit of a rat race, but it is well worth it. And seriously, save your $800 plane ticket to Milan; it'll buy you 10 meals at Roberto's that may taste even better!

Today I finally decided to visit Arthur Ave to have a lunch with my family. I live in Manhattan without my own car. So, the Bronx is difficult for me to reach. Checking blogs and the yelp, Roberto's had high ratings and seemed appropriate for a year-end-holiday-lunch. We had a mozzarella, penne, short pasta and skirt steak. Among them, a penne was the best one I've ever had. Very satisfactory.

    Dear Roberto,

I love you. Every dish you create is amazing. I will happily hand over my debit card to you, as you are worth every dollar in my bank account.

                                                         Love always,
                                                                Me

Look...Yeah, it's an expensive place but if you're looking through Yelp, then you're a food lover. As a food lover, sometimes, you just have to fork up some of that dough and LIVE. The food is fresh and authentic. I often times fantasize about a big plate of freshly made pasta and a strawberry cheesecake right after. It's just too good. If you can, for just one night, bring someone special and enjoy food that is made with nothing but love.

Place gets packed though, you'll be waiting for sometime so make sure you enjoy the company of the people you're with, otherwise you'll be going nuts!!

I knew I wanted to have a family night out somewhere in the Bronx, and had heard of Arthur ave. I immediately yelped and decided on Robertos. It was OUTSTANDING. So what made the meal so memorable?

Ambience: chandelier, quaint but not too quiet, candlelit, authentic Italian feel
Bar area: We had to wait about 30 minutes to be seated, but it was a great opportunity to stand around and have a glass of whine or two and catch up before dinner. There is space around the bar, and since it wasn't overly crowded, it was nice.
Food: blew me away. Fresh bread with oil, a mozzarella salad appetizer and I had the eggplant dish with the house Pinot grigio. I was really impressed and would highly recommend the dish- flavors were awesome, eggplant was not just slapped on top and just tasted phenomenal.
Service: Amazing. They smile. Warm ones too. Such a friendly and attentive staff. It was also nice because while there was a wait, it was great to have a break from the city. This little Italy also wasn't swarming with tourists or managers trying to persuade you to come in. It was mostly locals, so we had a great dinner in peace!

Highly recommend this place. Can't wait to check out the other spots in this area that is a hidden gem in the Bronx.

It is rare to find a place in the US where all the pasta is homemade and fresh.  I believe that may partly explain why this place has become a mecca for foodies.

I would summarize the experience as "Great ingredients combined in extraordinary ways."  Roberto, whose presence is large in the dining room, is obviously passionate about his work.

The only surprise was the relative small size - 10 tables with less than 50 seats in the dining room.  Fully occupied by 6:15 on a Thursday evening.

I'm a convert.  Will be back repeatedly and with friends.

This place is light years beyond the usual Arthur Ave. red sauce places. We ordered only from the specials, and WOW! We were shocked at how good it was.

Before I tell you what we ate, I'll share my only complaint: the waiter reels off the specials -- and there's a lot of 'em --in strongly accented English and it's imPOSSible to understand or remember half of what he said, so you have to ask him to repeat and repeat and repeat and then you hear all the other tables doing the same thing again and again and then by the end -- surprise!-- you've got them memorized too! Oh yeah, and he doesn't offer the prices nor those of wine, so you're left to spin the wheel and hope you don't break the bank.

Well, we DID break the bank, but who cares? We were in food and wine euphoria and the portions were surprisingly big so we do have leftovers...

    1. Fresh artichoke with shaved Parm and porcini mushrooms served over Prosciutto di Parma. By the time a different waiter split and plated this appetizer, it was a bit messy and hard to see what was what in the dim light, but it was an exPLOsion of delicious earthy and smoky flavors, a wipe-your-bread on the plate phenomenon.

    2. House made orecchiette with puree of broccoli rabe, bits of guanciale (suffice to say, fatty pork), vongole (tiny clams), big and little shrimp and scallops and a tiny bit of spice. This thing stole the show (and pretty much made me forgive its $28 price tag -- revealed at bill time). It was a large portion and creamy, unctuous, tender yet chewy, with highest quality seafood. After this we were stuffed... BUT

    3. Chicken on the bone with (I think I had 2 glasses of wine by now, so not so sure...) hot peppers,  crispy pancetta, cannellini beans... and? Man this was fantastic. And there were, like, 10 pieces of white meat chicken in the dish. We didn't stand a chance of finishing it, especially cuz we also ordered:

    4. Veal osso buco with polenta. Strangely, this was the weakest dish, even though the waiter told us they make the "best" osso buco. The tomato sauce was really nice, but the meat wasn't falling off the bone; it was rather kind of cartilaginous and hard to pull apart. Maybe it was grass fed veal. It was tasty, but not to-die-for.  Sorry.

Wish I could tell you about the desserts, but we couldn't have survived to eat and tell the tale. The bread was excellent (didn't eat much and wish I'd brought it home); one crusty rustic loaf and some herbed focaccia.

Outstanding New York Style Italian food. The linguini with clams was cooked perfectly al dente and the sole francese was perfectly seasoned and sauteed and not too "eggy."

We also loved our appetizers, the mussels and even the bread was so fresh it tasted as if it just came out of the oven ( and none of that par baked frozen bread stuff)

We would return in a heart beat!

I went there on a recommendation of a friend.  All I can say is that I was very disappointed.  First of all, I believe this has to be one of the most expensive places on Arthur Ave.  The bill was $100 for two people.  We had nothing to drink other than water and 1 cappuccino.

So, my partner got penne with vodka sauce.  It was the worst penne I've ever tasted.  I don't know what they did to make it taste so bad.  I got some kind of pesto dish.  I've had the same exact dish at a local pizzeria for half the price.  So, I was not impressed.

For dessert we ordered a chocolate cake and some kind of almond cake.  The chocolate cake was quite good.  It wasn't overly sweet.  The almond cake was very dry.  And the cappuccino was way overpriced.  We'll never go back there again.

Underwhelmed is all I can say. I had the parpadelle special and the noodles came out stuck to one another. That meant in a group of three noodles the middle one tasty doughy and undercooked. The wild boar stew sauce was pretty good with a little salt and pepper.

(if you thinking I should've complained and given them a chance to prepare the meal right, you're probably correct. I was disappointed and just wanted to escape. The parpadelle was off on a visual inspection -- you could see it stuck together -- if they didn't care enough to look at their food before serving it, I didn't want to spend more time then necessary there.)

As a happy side note, the bread they gave us was exceptional -- addeo's bakery just up the street.

no offense to manhattan, but i believe the boroughs have the best food and roberto's is definitely evidence of that.  it may be out of the way and hard to get to by subway blah blah blah but it's definitely worth it.  it takes the waiters like 5 minutes to spew off the specials (because there are so many) and it can be overwhelming but anything you try will be delicious.

Wow!  Although I went to Fordham in the Bronx, I never had the occasion to visit Roberto's until my husband and I took a week off to relax and try places we've never been to.  This was the highlight of our vacation by far.

As others have said, Roberto's doesn't take reservations, but we went on a weekday for lunch at around 1:00 p.m.  Even so, there was a healthy crowd of locals and power-lunchers (and one old Italian guy nursing a bottle of wine all by himself).

Although everything looked tasty, we asked our waiter to let the chef make whatever he wanted so we could experience a traditional, multi-course Italian meal (our only limitation was no seafood, because the hubby doesn't like it).

    The food:
To start: Fantastic bread, accompanied by Roberto's homemade olive oil
Antipasti: Grilled artichoke, asparagus, eggplant and mushrooms topped with truffle oil and fresh melted cheese (let it be known that my husband doesn't normally like any of the ingredients listed above, but said it was one of the best appetizers he's ever had)
Pasta: Some kind of amazing twirly noodle with cherry tomatoes, mushrooms and delicious pesto sauce
Entree: Beer-battered rib eye steak topped with peppers
Dessert: Chocolate lava cake -- I had to take a pic. of the description, which reads, "Warm chocolate cake exterior bellies a creamy, melted chocolate core ready to explode" -- need I say more?

We also enjoyed wine and the perfect attentive service of our waiter.  At the end of our meal, we found out that Roberto himself made our food and he came upstairs to say hello and personally thank us for stopping by.  He's got an old-world charm and many stories about food and family from his Salerno, Italy upbringing.

Now, I've never been to Babbo, but I heard one of the guys behind us saying that the food, service and ambiance at Roberto's "blew it away" -- quite a claim, and while I can't substantiate it, I can say this was easily the best lunch we've ever had.  If only I had two hours and $100 (our total bill, which was really quite reasonable, including four glasses of wine) to waste away on lunch everyday.  Every New Yorker owes it to themselves to have a meal here.  Molto bene!

Any of my sheltered friends from Albany: Are we there yet?  I think we're going to die.

Me: No, we're not going to die.  Just shut up and follow me.

Sheltered: Are you sure you know where you're going?  We're definitely going to die.

Me: Shut up before I throttle you.

We inevitably make it to Roberto's, without my having to throttle anyone  or either of us getting mugged.  From the first impression of the rustic atmosphere to the first bite of food, all notions of "are we going to die?" are summarily replaced with "THIS IS &*%ING AMAZING!"

So yes, it's a little off the beaten path, but it's incredibly worth it and you'll feel cool bringing someone here.  Roberto's is a gem and serves up my favorite Italian food in all the world.  Give it a chance!  You will not be disappointed.

    Wow!
I loved this place!  I thought the food and the atmosphere were top notch.  I had the Osso Buco special of the night for my entrée.  It was amazing served with a side of polenta, even the marrow was delicious.  We ordered multiple appetizers and shared as a table, so I am not sure exactly what everything was.  I am sure however that everything was as fresh as it could be and amazing!
The only knock on the place is the wait, but it is worth it and I think it adds to the charm.  They have a great bar area for waiting and an ideal selection of drinks while you wait.

I was introduced to this place by my boss who is from the Bronx and a total foodie. This is, by far, the best pasta in all of NYC. However, everything is wonderful on the menu. Even the bread is baked fresh from a local bakery on Arthur Avenue. Be sure to save room for dessert - the chocolate lava cake is heaven.

The only negative is that it does not take reservations. However, I have never had any problems getting a table quickly during the week or on Saturdays after 9PM.

The Experience is Hit or Miss.

The Great:  The complementary bread from Madonia's is an excellent start to the meal.  The orrichiete and cauliflower with breadcrumbs pasta was cooked perfectly al dente and very flavorful.  The vitello con spinaci was a tender veal with quality mozzarella, spinich and proscuitto.  The butter-based sauce was rich, but not overly so.

The Bad:  The Parmigiana di melanzane was bland despite its well-executed tomato sauce (it was also overly fried and served too cold).   The inauthentic tiramisu (cut like a cake, rather than scooped out like a trifle) was dried out and tasted like it came from a grocery store.  We left it untouched after one bite.

Cost:  The prices are high but the portions are huge - primi pastas easily feed two.

Verdict:  Good, but certainly not worth the trip from Manhattan, unless you order the right things.

Roberto's gets four stars instead of five because of the ambiance. Maybe it's to be expected in the Bronx, but at 6:30 PM on a Saturday, the restaurant was extremely loud; people talking at my table two persons over were rendered barely audible. Table placement was also dubious at Roberto's with waiters often brushing by my back to serve the table behind me. All that being said, the food and service was extremely good! Bread and water were constantly filled. I enjoyed a penne dish with smoked mozarella and roasted eggplant that was delicious. The penne was served al dente which I did not request. Portion sizes were generous. Prices are affordable averaging around $ 20 an entree.  Overall my party was quite satisfied and ate every last bite, but were left a little disappointed given this place's lofty reputation and glowing reviews from locals.

Went on Friday night and it was awesome.  I actually was a bit of a hater on Roberto's before but this was really one of the best meals I've ever had in my life.

The waiter made the suggestion that an appetizer and a first plate could be shared and then for each of us (was just me and the mrs.) to order our own main plate.  I appreciated him letting us know that the portions were done so that we didn't over order.  We went with the Insalata di Bocconcini for appetizer and it was fantastic...fresh mozzerella, soprasatta, peppers, olives, etc.

Next up the fresh made ravioli stuffed with a puree of goat cheese and pears.  Unreal.  I love cheese and fruit together, especially pears.  This was the highlight of the meal for me.

Then Pollo alla paesana...chicken on the bone, sausage, peppers and porcini mushrooms in a balsamic reduction sauce.  I had this once before and it was really fantastic.  No room for dessert...I wish I could have done it but I just ran out of room.

Fantastic meal, great place.  Word to the wise...we showed up at 9pm and sat down immediately.  For a place like this it's best to avoid the rush...I have had trouble at the peak hours before so now I'll show up and sit down when the tourists are leaving to drive home.

Heading to the Bronx is something most Manhattanites rarely do - unless its for a Yankees game and even then its right back to the train.

This authenit italian restaurant, right in Little Italy of the Bronx, has the most amazing home made italian food that I have ever tasted.  Move over Lupa, if Roberto's were in the city, the prices would be three times what they are now and the service would be half as attentive.

The restaurant is dimly lit by an amazing chandelier and heavy drapes block out the slightly off setting bronx neighborhood.  The food is amazing and served with italian flair.

Its usually a 15 minute wait, but after a Yankees game you could wait for hours, and its worth it!

I only gave it 4 stars because the appetizers were So amazing but the pasta was good. Maybe I should have stuck with the regular pasta dishes but that night I tried their special which was Fusilli baked with bread crumbs and parm cheese.  Which was okay. Not mind blowing like the apps.

Man, so many delicious apps to choose from but we got the octopus salad and buffalo mozzarella with prosciutto, roasted peppers and sun dried tomatoes. AMAZING!!!!!!!!

    So conclusion:

I would just go here for the appetizers. Next time if I ever trek out to the Bronx I would just order all the apps and skip the pasta entree.

I doubt the people who gave this restaurant good reviews for its food have experienced good Italian food. The service here is very good and attentive, the olive oil (probably southern Italian or Sicilian) excellent, with a spicy finish. The wine list is good, but overpriced (an Antinori Peppoli for $56 is high). The risotto was overcooked. Its taste and texture seemed like it came from a can. The main dishes were overcooked and oversauced. The bronzino did not seem fresh and was drowned in sauce. The rabbit was tough and drowned in a tasteless sauce. The carrots and potatoes were overcooked to the point of mush. The dessert menu was uncreative and could have been the dessert menu in a hundred restaurants. I live in The Bronx and I have to say it would be better to take a round-trip taxi to Bar Pitti or Da Silvano or Frankie's Spuntino than to drop $250 (our tab for two) on this place.

Went here with my beau on Valentine's Day
(* denotes specials for the day, not on the menu)

    Wine
CAB SAUV house wine was fine

    Antipasti
*SHRIMP AND SCALLOP IN CREAM SAUCE - shrimps were overcooked, scallops were cooked to perfection! sauce was creamy and garlicy

    Primi
RADIATORIIN CARTOCCIO overcooked, but great flavor. Tasted like Chef Boyardee went to Hollywood! Not so good reheated.
*LAMB RAGU RAVIOLI - really didnt like. the filling had a gamy taste but the texture was a bit mealy. It tasted better after reheating it in the oven, using the juices from the sea bass sauce.

    Secondi
CHILEAN SEA BASS falls apart in your mouth, tasty sauce, similar to the RADIATORI. Even better reheated, falling off the bone good!
OSSO BUCO good! Falling off the bone nicely, juicy. Too salty when reheated.

This restaurant is outstanding. The service, ambiance, and food were great. My tin-foil pasta was phenomenal. Apparently, it's a special that they change every week and mine was better than the week before according to the waiter. They have a lot of specials here. The lamb and ravioli was pretty good too. We had the caprese and mussel/clam medley as appetizers which were great!

Would definitely come back and recommend to anyone!  Wine by the glass was limited, but the Prosecco they had was pretty good.

Our meal, the stellar service, and the atmosphere were all outstanding, really outstanding!  I decided to take my boyfriend here for his birthday and I was really hoping it would prove to have been a good choice.  We had the Parmigiana di Melanzane e Zucchine for an appetizer and it was certainly plenty for two people and very tasty.  For our meals, I had the Radiatore in Cartoccio and he had the Veal Ossobuco with grilled polenta.  All the pasta is homemade and in my dish in particular, the pasta is cooked in foil on the grill.  I know, I've never heard of that either, but wow, was it amazing.  Hands down, the best pasta dish I've ever eaten.  He really enjoyed the ossobuco; said it was very tender and the sauce complimentary.  He chose the cream puffs with chocolate for his birthday dessert and they brought it out with a candle and played an 50's style "Happy Birthday" over the PA.  Phenomenal.

What can Roberto's do to improve?  They can start to take reservations!

Note:  If you're from NJ - drive here, because the train doesn't stop anywhere near Little Italy.  If not, I guess you can take the 4 or the B D to the Fordham stop and walk, but it's far and I wouldn't recommend this walk after dark.  We took the 4 and walked while it was still light and they called us a car to take back to B D at Fordham.  Take the B D to 59th St/Columbus Circle and switch to the A C E back to Penn Station.

I am an absolute fan of Roberto's.  If it wasn't because everytime my bf and I go we spend about $150-$200 we would def go more often.  The staff is super friendly and once in a while you'll even see Roberto making new friends.  They have awesome specials ALL the time, the bartender is great at making martinis and they have a great wine selection.  From their salads to their rissottos to their entrees, I just haven't found something to complain about.  Last Friday I had their mushroom risotto w/ peas, I had their smoked mozarella over spinach for appz, and I had my favorite - their lamb with arugula salad on the side.  It's a nice experience with great food.

Wow!  Fantastic.  Stumbled on this great Italian restaurant in Bronx passing through.  Bottom line this is one of the best italian meals I have had outside of Italy.  Completely blown away.  Flavors were perfectly melded.  My wife and teenage daughters all had fresh pasta, two seafood dishes and one Zuchini pasta.  I had fresh swordfish with steamed small clams (perfectly cooked!)  We had fresh grilled octopus for starter that again, was perfectly cooked and very tasty.

I have been lurking around Yelp for years but haven't felt motivated to post until now.  LOVED IT!!!

The atmosphere is rustic and sweet (dark enough to be romantic, but still family friendly during the day). What's best is that the restaurant is situated off of Arthur avenue, so it's quiet and away from the bustle of the main artery of Little italy. The wait staff is on point and very helpful. The portions are big (which is the way Italian should be) and the food is so fresh and so delicious.

Roberto's is excellent.  There is nothing bad I can say about the place.  The pollo al limone was amazing (but I love anything in a wine sauce!)  I loved the atmosphere: a little rustic and not too pretentious.  It was not crowded on a weekday afternoon when I went,  but I assume it is crowded on nights and weekends based on the excellent food.  I only wish it wasn't so expensive so I could go back more often!
