I sought care from Rob after a minor car accident caused annoying, painful and motion limiting spasms in my upper back, shoulders and neck. Ditto what others say about his personal concern and caring. His approach is holistic, multi-modal and consistent with medical care I have been receiving. His care greatly accelerated my recovery and enabled me to get back to work quickly. (teaching sailing and racing sailboats)
His care was efficient (read affordable and cost effective) and I appreciated his candor about treatment - willingness to explain what he was doing and why re: manipulation, e-stim and ultrasound and what the pros and cons of other treatments are.
The location is extremely convenient to me and parking is easy and cheap.
(I've commuted to his office (AND PARKED) from San Francisco in less time than it takes me just park within San Francisco!) -

LIFE SAVER!!! I'm a busy hairstylist and today when my back started acting up I needed help and fast. Robert was able to see me today and help treat the problem. The office was easy to find, clean, and very comfortable. Robert was great at explaining what was happening and what to do to treat the problem.

D.C. Rob Townsend has been our family chiropractor for several years now and we love him. I've seen lots of different chiropractors over the years and none have been as thorough and knowledgeable. Rob really knows the human body. He's also great with kids, my five-year old loves her adjustments.
I saw him throughout my last pregnancy and attribute my speedy, natural delivery to good chiropractic (my last labor was almost four days long). I highly recommend D.C. Rob Townsend for maintaining a good spine and healthy nervous system. -

Unlike my other ratings I will break format here.
Dr.Townsend is an excellent chiropractor, above average
isn't getting warm. If you see him once you won't want to try
anyone else. He's polite, prompt, thorough and always
listens to my concerns about my treatments. I highly, highly
recommend him. I feel so much better in general after having
seen him regularly for the last 3 months.
Best chiropractor in the east bay!! -

His is dedicated to helping people with their body/mind connectedness.

I saw Rob for the first time on Fri. I came in because I was experiencing some numbness in my arm and hand. Rob gave a thorough examination utilizing orthopedic and Kinesiology techniques.
Not only is he very knowledgeable about the body, he is also very professional and gentle with his adjustments.
I've been to many chiropractors before and have never experienced that level of thoroughness. I went to see him again the next day and my arm and neck feels so much better! -

I met Rob at Club One in Oakland. I had seen him there several times over the course of a few months doing chair massage. I am pretty picky about who I let touch me - so it took me a while before I finally forked over the dough and plopped down in his chair. I only did this because I saw his little sign that said "chiropractor". HA! good deal - he must know something about the back. Wow. I was amazed at his ability to adjust me and use different techniques to get my spine to relax.
Long story short - I immediately booked an appointment to go see him for further work. I have now been seeing him for a few weeks and I can tell you that I feel much freer and more mobile. I have a long history of working with other chiropractors who were very good - so I kinda went into this with some high expectations - and I was not disappointed.
Rob is very caring and genuinely is interested in making his patients feel better over the long haul. I highly recommend him - especially if you are a first timer - he is thoughtful and listens to you and will offer suggestions of therapies outside of his core competency if he thinks they would benefit you.
Finally - cost is always a factor as most insurances don't fully cover chiropractic. He is very affordable! I was pleasantly surprised - and he has pricing plans that will provide you with the flexibility you may need in order to manage your cashflow. -

Robert has the knowledge and skill to make problems and pains due to the everyday life get better. I don't rave much about chiropractors but Robert has a way in which he is always pleasant and attentive. His knowledge of Kinesiology techniques mixed with orthopedic and sports related type injuries is most helpful.

Yelping by proxy.... but since this man's services also made my life easier, I don't mind at all. My hubby-to-be is a spiteful, antisocial, little hatemonger when it comes to providers of medical services...but since I've worked in health care for quite some time now, he usually responds favorably to recommendations of folks I know. Unfortunately, there was no time to schedule an appointment with my chiro in the city after his acute pain surfaced in his lower back yesterday...he was in so much pain in fact, that he was unable to walk up the stairs to unlock the front door. Crawling, crying and anger about aging ensued...I was not about to let his back ruin my weekend!!! He needed a chiro in oaktown fast!! So I did a lil research and came up with a couple of candidates here on yelp. After emailing people I knew, a friend of mine, Kim Vu, told me her cousin saw this guy and a few times and liked him. Do I dare send my lovey to this man, with no prior personal experience of my own and just hearsay? 4 yrs of chiro exp.....hmmmmm? But the fact that he also worked as a CMT was a deal closer....and off he went to meet the man who hopefully could help.
Grumpy Bad Back Guy actually came back with a spring in his step with nothing but good things to say about Robert Townsend. He described him as knowledgeable, gentle, personable, and strong. Sometimes, as a person of color (OMG.... here comes the race card!!!!LOL) there is a fear that you will not receive comprehensive care from someone different from you.....(really alot of people have this fear, not only because of race, but sexual orientation, or gender identity, etc.) not only do you want to get treated and treated as a person, but you don't want to make anyone else feel uncomfortable either.....well, if you're looking for someone compassionate regardless of who you are and you're in the east bay, then perhaps this is the Chiro for you.
I decided on 4 stars since I didn't see him in person. I'll give him 5 stars once I see him personally.
If this review doesn't say how warm and professional Robert Townsend is, the picture of him with the infectious smile on this site says it all. -

Robert is an amazing chiropractor! I go to him once a month and he keeps me on track. He strong, but gentle and knows his stuff. He's also great with children. He cleared up my daughters ear infection with one adjustment. That meant no anti-biotics for her! Not to mention he's one of the most affordable chiropractors you'll find.
I recommend him highly!! -

Dr. Townsend has healing hands; he always seems to find the spots that need taking care of. He is a gifted chiropractor, and I've seen many around town. His integrated approach is really unique, he offers more time with each patient than the typical shocking approach to "lay down and get cracked". He listens, he doesn't force technique and watches how you walk and move and measures improvement with each visit, keeping notes for insurance purposes. He's got a great network for people to recommend, he's very tied into the community. I'm working with SOL across the street for physical therapy as well as Dr. Townsend and the progress after 2 car accidents has been incredible. It's also nice to see him at Club One for a check in. He really does care, he is observant, respectful, realistic, and mindful. His follow up with documentation paperwork is excellent; his positive demeanor makes him a pleasure to work with through the pain. I'm improving and hopeful. The office is pleasant, warm and it's usually easy to find parking, which all adds to the comfort of the visit.
