After seeing a well yelped stylist in Manhattan, and getting a very snotty attitude, I decided I needed a change. So, I turned to Yelp, and found Robert Stuart Salon on the UWS.

I booked an appointment with a regular "Stylist", and I met with Jenny. Jenny was extremely interested in what I wanted, and also gave me some ideas of what would work for me. She mixed up a fantastic color, which really compliments my skin tone. The cut is cute, manageable, and works with both my naturally curly hair, as well as my straight, blown out hair.

Jenny is a perfectionist, and just as sweet as can be. The salon itself has a great vibe...professional, but not pretentious.

I will definitely be back to see Jenny...she made me into a new woman!

I get my hair cut here pretty regularly. The salon is cute and small, and very well priced compared to some of the others in the area and definitely a better haircut than some of the semi-cheaper ones (like Dramatics...ick).
Jake is my regular stylist. He's great and has some really great suggestions when I'm not sure what I want to do.
This place does free bang trims too for regular customers. I did once have mine cut by someone else who was rude and didn't do a great job, but I don't know her name. That's the only issue I've ever had there.

I finally found a colorist and stylist in NYC! Why the reason for 4 stars? It's a small salon ( 6 chairs and 3 shampoo bowls I think) and waiting for a chair to complete a procedure is really not my cup of tea. You know what they say about the new york minute....if I were getting a free massage while I was waiting it could change my attitude however.

I moved to NYC from California 4 years ago and have been searching for my California blonde colorist since then. It's slim pickins here in the world of "dark haired girls" in NYC.

Theo has colored my hair three times and it has turned out beautifully. (my last colorist, who is out of business now actually burnt my hair with bleach...un-needed for a dishwater blonde like me)

Byba has cut, styled and blown-out my hair twice. She is fantastic as well.

If you don't have a stylist you are thrilled with, I'd suggest to try this salon.

This salon is fantastic.  The price is right and the staff are (generally) very friendly.  Jenny usually cuts my hair and she is very good (far better than stylists I used to go to who charged more than 3 times as much).
I would recommend avoiding weekend appointments though.  The salon is simply not big enough to cope with all the staff and customers sitting around waiting for appointments, dye to set etc.  My last appointment was particularly unpleasant for this reason - there was nowhere for me to sit while waiting for my stylist to finish her previous appointment, and the backroom (where they wash your hair etc) doubles as a staff breakroom/gossip-spot meaning that if you are forced to wait there you feel like you're crashing a staff party!
That said, Robert Stuart salon is a fantastic place to get your hair cut, I would recommend it to anyone!

Ok, I am hypercritical about my hair!  I know faces, as a portrait artist, Im a women who had been involved with fashion and I dont have the best hair to deal with.(fine and recessed hairline)   Robert, the owner was recommended to me, when I told the gal my hair has issues (as she could see) and she was honest to recommend , and not just turn me over to someone who needed clients., Robert for my "case".  This was a great reccomendation, because he was a gentleman, and in addition a superior haircutter.  I am very pleased and appreciate the precision and artistry of my cut.  He is truly a pleasure to experience and I recommend him highly!! And I am one tough cookie to please !!

Ever since I moved into Manhattan I have visited quite a few hair salons, most of which were over priced highway robbery.

Then came Robert Stuart Salon...

I walked in. Greeted with a smile with WHITE TEETH! I know that sounds kind of picky, but if your first face that you see when you walk into a business DOESN'T have white teeth it gives a strange impression. (at least it does for me.) Spoke to Robert himself. Quite the character if you ever get the chance to sit down with him. You can talk about anything with him. I think in a former life he was a guidance counselor or a therapist. heh.

I havent been there in about a year or so...since the fall out. No silly people! I didn't get into an argument with Robert or his staff...

My hair started to fall out. So...I buzz my own hair and save money in the process. Sorry Robert, but even with your amazing skills with a comb and a scissor you cannot make a balding man look good.

Here is a hot tip for all balding men...

NO COMB-OVERS!
NO 0-100 Mullets! (0% in front - 100% in the back)
NO DOING THAT STUPID FAKE ASS POOFY Frankie Avalon thing!

Just keep it close and tight and everything will be aight. Women will approach you more if you keep it close. If you let yourself go for like a month. You'll look like BOZO the clown. Don't do it.

It's just hair guys. It's just hair.

This place was pretty good, and the price was fair. But I've had better.

Asked for reducing layering, as my mid-back-length hair was really thinned out by the last haircut I had gotten. My hair stylist was really nice and did a great job on the layering, making my hair look healthy and thick once again. However, when I asked her to angle the front, she did so a bit unevenly.

For the haircut, I'd give four stars, but for the overall review I give three because I noticed the receptionist and a stylist were rude to one another and it made me feel awkward. People always notice!

The dilemma I face in bestowing well-deserved yet effusive, lavish praise upon Robert is not sounding like I'm bragging about my hair.  I have curly hair that I like to also wear straight so it's key that I get a great cut every time...  It can't be so-so; I can't let a bad cut "grow out"; I need a cut that works for both looks: curly and straight which, if you have this kind of hair; you know what I mean.

Robert has been cutting my hair for somewhere north of ten years and he is that rare stylist Who Really Listens to what you want. He doesn't nod and then go ahead and do whatever he wants.  He asks questions, we talk and even negotiate the length that his scissors will snip.  He is meticulous and takes pride in his work and truly isn't satisfied unless you Love your hair.

This review would be incomplete without mentioning the amazing colorist Baiba ("bye ba") who also takes the time to talk through with you what works best.  This is a great, relaxed neighborhood shop that channels a main street friendliness while still maintaining a nyc edge in the fabulous work they consistently do.

I feel like a sexy minx!

Walking into Robert Stuart I was a girl unevenly growing out a short haircut, frazzled from preparing for a work event, and driven to gobble down a McDonald's ice cream cone seconds after I exited the humid subway and minutes before making my way to Amsterdam.

And then, I met Jake. And as Jake snipped away all of my bulky, random, frayed locks, I re-accepted my very sexy self.

Jake is obviously very comfortable with himself as a stylist and it showed in the way he consulted with me and ultimately, gave me a fantastic, manageable style. All for around $55, which is way more affordable for me then other city spots, as we all know. I even learned that I'm not supposed to get razor haircuts!  How come no one told me this before?  Apparently it just makes my fine hair frizzy.

Jake, I'll be seeing you soon. And after my roommate was wowed by my style, maybe she will, too!

Rarrr!

What a fabulous place!  I just got my hair cut there today for the first time, and they are quite simply the best!  Here's a tip - if you have curly hair, ask for Jenny - she turned my unruly mop into adorable, shiny curls that I couldn't be happier with!  Although, from what I saw as I sat in her chair, they all seem to be very talented stylists there.  As for the prices, they're more than reasonable - one of the reasons I went there, after reading the reviews on here, was that I saw you could still get a fantastic hair cut in this city for under $60.  So honestly, you have to go, you won't be sorry!

While I lived in UWS about a year ago, this is the salon I went to.  Unfortunately, Robert Stuart is now out of the way.  Despite the small, somewhat uncomfortable sink area and the awkward process of putting on the haircut cape, I still want to tell everyone how wonderful this place is.

I had made an appointment with Robert (the owner) because I decided I needed someone to help me grow out my hair.  Because of my thick hair, it grew up and outwards.  I so desperately wanted longer hair, so it would just fall by the sheer weight (and not because I wore a beanie to make it flat).  So Robert cut my hair in such a way that it didn't succumb to the usual awkward growing out stages.   However, Robert recommended that I still go in every 2-3 weeks to get it trimmed on the sides to keep it looking decent.  And you know what he did for me?  He offered to do it for FREE until it grew out!  So every few weeks, I went into Robert Stuart Salon, and he squeezed me in between scheduled clients to do a quick touch up.

Unfortunately, I didn't get to grow it out all the way before I moved, but I'll never forget what a great stylist/owner Robert was!

I've lived in a lot of cities over the years and I've developed a lot of relationships with salons and stylists: some good, some dysfunctional, and too many just "okay." In Los Angeles I found myself returning to a salon I didn't really love for years because the owner gave such good haircuts, but everything else was slightly amiss. So when I moved back to NYC last fall I put off searching for a new salon as long as possible, not eager for the disappointment of another not-great place.

What I found at Robert Stuart Salon was a thrillingly great place. Robert greets everyone who walks in the door and the entire staff is attentive and friendly. I had booked a cut with Robert, and was surprised that he took so much time and paid so much attention to designing a cut and style that would suit me, taking the time to look through magazines with me and discuss what would work and not work. I got a great cut which, in the weeks after, allowed me to style and wear my cut in different ways. Versatility has always been the hallmark of a brilliant cut to me.

I had color done by Rose and she, too, was very thoughtful in talking about what I'd had before, what I liked and disliked about previous color. She created a terrific shade that looked natural and was so easy. For years I'd gone through multistage processes to come up with a natural look which looked unnatural and Rose nailed it in one visit.

Near the end of my first visit, after the pampering and great service, I grew uneasy; I hadn't thought to inquire about the cost of any of the services I was enjoying. I began to suspect that I would be presented with a whopping bill for all this attention. After all, I had blithely requested a cut by the owner. Surely I was about to experience some serious sticker shock. I WAS shocked: the bill was less than I had been paying in Los Angeles for the same services! Could this be?!

The salon is busy and there can be a little wait at times if you are having more than one service performed but everyone couldn't be more attentive, bringing water, magazines, and simply paying attention to your comfort. It's so refreshing. It is clear that the staff really respect Robert and enjoy working there. Needless to say I have already been back and look forward to a long relationship there.

I've gotten both cuts and color done here and I'm definitely a fan. The prices are incredibly reasonable for New York and the people that work here are great- very friendly but you don't have to have those obligatory you're-cutting-my-hair-so-I-have-to-talk-to-you conversations if you don't want to.

Highly recommended!

After jumping from salon to salon since I moved to the city 18 months ago it feels like I've finally...FINALLY...hit the jackpot! John is a color wizz and Robert gave me the best cut I've had in the past two years.

You know it's desperate when I, control freak of all control freaks, sit down in the chair and say 'Do whatever you want' to a hairstylist. (It was that bad) And I'm happy to report that I left Robert Stuart Salon with the hugest grin on my face. My credit card did not feel quite as happy as my head - $245.30 for partial highlights and cut (without tip), but I am sure that the FREE BANG TRIMS will more than make up for this until I go back in three months. The way I see it, this means that I am paying $100 per month to look absolutely fabulous. And as the ad says: "I'm worth it"!

The biggest compliment I've received on my new 'do' was this morning when a colleague came to me and said, 'You look like you had a good night's sleep'. Now that, my friends, is what great color will do for you.

I was definitely worried about trying a new place for haircuts when I first moved to the city.

I found Robert Stuart Salon on Yelp and was actually not disapointed.  I've had my haircut there about five times, with three different stylists, and was pleased each time.  I'm usually not one to cheat on a good stylist.  The first girl I saw moved on and then I had trouble remembering name of my second stylist. I ended up setting an appointment with the wrong person. Ooops.

The bottom line is that I had good experiences with three different stylists.  Each time, the stylist understood what I wanted and delivered on it.

I'll be back again.

My hair - brown, long'ish and straight.  So one would think it would be hard to *&*! up a haircut but it's amazing how many people get it wrong.

Not John - my new trusty UWS hairdresser!

I was somewhat apprehensive to visit a salon in my local 'hood - it is stroller central when you think about it, so avant-garde hairstyles isn't really what it's known for.  I called up and they fit me in that day.  The salon is small, but does the job.  It's not as trendy as one might expect from a salon in Soho, but it's modern and fresh.

When I met John he really looked at my hair, and asked me what I was after.  I told him I didn't want too many layers at the top of my head b/c I find after 3 weeks or so, I end up having that mushroom-head effect, where there's a tonne of volume up to my ears, then dead after that.  I also told him I'm a fairly low-maintenance girl so didn't want a hairstyle that required curlers/lots of blow-drying/tonnes of product.  He stood there, pensive, and finally said he was going to give me a style of cut that was tres 'in' during the  70's...

After 30-40mins in the chair I walked out feeling a million dollars.  The cut is fabulous, low-maintenance and perfect for summer - light, breezy and feminine.

I would highly recommend John to anyone looking for a great cut, and personal service.

Total cost was $80 by the time I left a tip.

I called for a same-day appointment and the receptionist mentioned that she would be able to squeeze me in. When I got there, they ushered me to the back, where they hung up my coat.. The stylist who was supposed to cut my hair said hello and told me he would be a few minutes.

When it was finally time to get my haircut, the guy who cut my hair was extremely distracted, looking around and at the door constantly. I explained my idea for a haircut and he half-heartedly agreed without giving me suggestions or even taking a look at my hair to make sure my idea would work. He started to cut my hair, when all of a sudden another client walked in. He said "oh theres my 6:00 o'clock" and asked another stylist to finish his work. Then he eventually came back to "check" my hair and apologized for being double-booked.

I have never been treated so unprofessionally, it was really frustrating, I wish they had the sense to just let me know that they were too busy to take any more clients. Instead, I ended up walking out of the salon with a half-done hair cut.

Really disappointed, bad service, won't be going back.

Out of part laziness and part busy-ness, I only get my hair cut rarely, so when I do make the time to get a cut, I need it done right.  Robert sends me out of his salon feeling like I look like Jennifer Aniston.  He's given me the holy grail of hair-styles: professional but low-maintenance from day-to-day, and grows in well in the long gaps between visits, so it never looks shaggy.

This IS an expensive hair-cut.  A cut with Robert is advertised on the website as "$65 and up" but my cut is $95.  A partial highlight is advertised as "$90 and up" but I paid $150 for highlights with Jordan.  I suppose this is probably on a par with most trendy places in Manhattan, but as the eternal bargain-hunter I definitely wince when I take out the credit card here.

Still, since I moved to Manhattan I have bounced from salon to salon, never entirely happy with my hair cut whether I paid $20 or $100.  Now that I've found Robert and Jordan I'm sticking with them.  After all, I could pay a little more for a fabulous cut that will last 6 months, or pay half as much for a mediocre cut that needs maintenance twice as often.  No, I'll be back to see Robert again.

My hair is hard to cut but this place gets it right.

I've been going to Baiba, Latvian Queen of Scissors, for two years now (ever since I decided to find someone good in the neighborhood instead of going downtown or to the UES every time I needed a cut).  I needed somewhere I could just pop in on those days I woke up feeling like I MUST get a haircut now.

Baiba will give you the cut you want.  Plus, she's very professional and quick.

As I slogged to work through the thick miasma of humid NYC morning air, I decided I was finally going to do it. I was chopping off my mass of thick curly hair and FINALLY letting some air to the back of my neck . Not normally doing the NYC salon thing, I hopped on yelp to find a place near work, on the UWS. After narrowing it down to Robert Stuart Salon and K's Salon, I decided to let it be decided by whomever would give me an appointment THAT afternoon. After a quick call, the receptionist at Robert Stuart penciled me in for 1p.m., only an hour and a half away! Oh, and a 10% discount for curly haired customers! Bizarre, but I"m sold!
So I walk in there, and met Jenny, who was simply adorable, and had a cool circa 1950s dress/hair look going on that I LOVED. I showed her a picture, and told her to chop it off - we're talking about 5 inches here. Her eyes lit up - she was so excited!
And its perfect! She cut it to my shoulders, then fluffed the curls a bit and asked if it was short enough. No way, shorter! Another quick trim, and another evaulation - SHORTER! SHORTER! She quickly and efficient shapes it, thinning the ends so the curls taper nicely without giving me a frizzball - and it is EXACTLY the cut I didn't even know I wanted.
Better yet, she didn't chatter my ear off while she was doing it. Robert, cutting someone's hair in the chair next to mine, never shut up the whole time i was in there, and honestly surprised the woman who's hair he was trimming doesn't have whiplash, he was jerking her head around so harshly.
I liked this place, price was good ($50 after my discount) or so I've heard, and I'd go back again, but specifically for Jenny.

This place is the best bang for the buck (or would that be the best bangs for the buck?) in the whole city.  Lilly is a fantastic stylist; the first time I ever went in there, she had an immediate long-term idea as to what my hair should look like and how I should take care of it.  I have never been more impressed-- my hair is notoriously hard to manage, but Lilly's expertise has made it look better than ever before.  Highly recommended!

I recently moved to NYC and was in dire need of a haircut.  I decided on the Robert Stuart Salon since it is close to where I live and the reviews were good.  I called on a Tuesday/Wednesday and was able to get an appointment with Robert himself on Saturday.  Robert is great!  He gave me a fresh cut with lots of layers, and he spent a lot of time cutting my hair... definitely took the time to make sure it was exactly how he wanted it.  He does a lot of dry cutting.. so beware when you leave and make sure you get all the hair off your face and neck.  After leaving the salon and walking a block I noticed in a passing mirror that I had a hairy face!  I would like to personally thank the receptionist for allowing me to walk out of the salon like that!
