Solid sushi place. Definitely not Chinese-run. On par with some of the good sushi places in metropolitan areas. One of the waitresses screwed up our order and the owners were very nice about it and knocked a bit off our check. Only downside is that it's in the middle of Allentown.
The sushi is definitely very good here. I like their fish selection. The menu had a lot of choices and nothing was really obnoxiously American-ized with a few exceptions. I'd love to come back here to try their entree selection.
They do have hibachi which some people like. However I was really drawn to the sushi and my hunch was correct. Their sushi was ridiculously tasty. The fish portions were quite generous and the taste was sublime. My favorite was the toro tuna which was appropriately fatty and smooth. A hidden treasure would be the humble mackerel sushi.
Points also for the sushi chef appropriately applying wasabi to the sushi by layering it between the fish and rice. Whenever I try to do it myself I end up mashing it all over the rice and making a mess. Since the chef does it for you I was able to just dip the fish side in a little bit of soy sauce and get everything in one clean bite.
This all being said, I think I lost more Asian cred for not noticing an Asian restaurant on this culinary level being run by first-generation immigrants. -

Based on the reviews I had high hopes for this place, but over all it just was not a very good dining experience for me. One of the main reasons for this was that the place was dead. When we came in there was one couple at the sushi bar, and I think I only saw one other table come in. This was 7pm on a Friday evening, I was shocked.
But who cares as long as the food is good, right? Well yeah, but the food was nothing special. The hibachi was well done, slightly over seasoned, but the knife skills and tricks were a bit above average from our server. We also got some sushi rolls which, based on other reviews, I expected to be well done. Sadly i can't agree. The fish quality was fine, but the rolls themselves were poorly made - uneven rice, pieces not cut all the way through, sloppy work overall.
I don't mind going out of my way for some good food, but I don't think I can justify coming back here when there are other acceptable hibachi grills in the area. -

I made reservations here for a Saturday night to start off a bachelorette party. We got there around 7pm and had plans to go to a comedy club right down the street that started at 9pm. Surely 2 hours for 4 girls at Hibachi would be plenty of time.... What a mistake. Please know there was 1 full table on the Hibachi side and another table with a couple that looked like they were finishing up. So the place was not busy. It took them over 45 minutes for someone to take our drink order!!! After asking 2 times and telling them we have tickets for a comedy show at 9pm. It took them another 15-20 minutes to get us our drinks. After the stress of just waiting around for the drinks, we all finished them pretty quickly but couldn't order another one because we were afraid of another half hour wait. The hibachi guy came over to start his cooking/show. (mind you in the middle of all this the couple at the other table was sitting around with their to go boxes... Waiting and Waiting for someone to bring their check, they finally got up and went to the bar to pay their bill ) CRAZY
We were all trying to be optimistic and have a good time regardless of the wait. I was hoping the food would be good. Not the case, veggies had no flavor or color, meat was tasteless everything was so bland. I asked for the spicy mayo on the side thinking I could at least dip my food into that for some taste. The cook looked at my and just shrugged like he didn't understand. The Miso was so not MISO, some kind of bland broth. I love Ginger dressing and whatever they put on the salad was a watery mess.
We shoveled down our food because is was almost 9, asked for the check half way through the meal, was not able to eat the desert that came with meal because we didn't have time. They did nothing to compensate us for this wait or the bad food. It was just a horrible experience all around. I'm really not one to write a bad post but this was beyond a bad experience. -

When I go to sushi bars, I find myself telling the sushi chef how sharp their knives are, as they can cut the fish soooo thin!
Not here.
They have been there a long time and it is an old fashioned sushi bar, but to me that is good.
Realistically, I haven't been to a sushi bar in NY that was better for the money.
West coast, different story. -

My husband is very picky about his sushi. He is always on the alert for Chinese-run sushi places, which actually are most of them. This restaurant is authentic, run by actual Japanese.
I always order the sushi, and it is always excellent. The last couple of times I also ordered the seaweed salad, and edemame, which where both excellent. -

I love the fried rice. I go there w/ my friends and boyfriend b/c their liking for the raw-er things in life. My allergies to shelled fish prevents me from trying the things they love about this place. So take this rating for the experience. I like the feel of the restaurant. Dark, welcoming, feels like i'm in another world. My best experience was when i decided to buy a gift certificate for a friend but I was going to get out of work late. The hostess waited around for me until I got there! okay it's possible she was there anyways cleaning up. But she made me feel special as if she was making an exception for me. I like that! I'd go back again and eat fried rice. OH there was a hair in my boyfriend's sushi. But their human, it happens. i forgive them.

Most Authentic Japanese Restaurant found in the area without having to go to NYC. My wife and I lived in Japan for a great part of our lives, so we are very picky when it comes to eating japanese food. This is not ran by anyone other than the japanese owners. And since the owners are from Japan, so is their style of service which we love!
Hibachi- if you have ever lived in Japan you'd know that this is just a flashy americanized way of entertainment. The hibachi/teppanyaki there is very good though.
The real reason we go there is for the quality of food, fresh sushi & their authentic Japanese dishes. If you know what real japanese food is you'll appreciate everything about this place. -

The ambiance is typical sushi shop but the food is much more than that. Don't be fooled by the location as the food is much better than I had expected. I love the striped and rainbow rolls and also occasionally get the Alaska roll. I would recommend this location to people as it has some of the best sushi in the valley.

Another awesome night out at Robata of Tokoyo. The service is great and the Habatchi grill entertainment by the cook is the best part of the dinner. I highly recommend the shrimp tempura.

Sushi wasn't bad but it wasn't fabulous either. I wasn't impressed with the sushi and the prices were a little high. It was quiet and fairly empty when I went with friends.
Maybe I'm picky but if I'm in the area I don't think I would go back. -

Robata has stood the test of time for solid food and a fun teppanyaki show. The sushi is good - fresh and basic not mind-blowing.
The real stars are the seasoned teppanyaki chefs. Very entertaining. -

Went here for the hibachi with another couple this past weekend. It's nice inside and is decorated with a lot of Eastern influenced flair, though some parts of the restaurant look a bit weathered.
The hibachi here was good in that it was tasty and entertaining, which is why people do hibachi in the first place, for the experience. Overall everything was pretty on par with what I've experienced at other hibachi restaurants with the exception of chef Carlos, he was better than your typical hibachi cook. Like every other hibachi place I've ever been to the food is heavy on the vegetables and rice and light on the meat. However, my filet was cooked perfectly medium-rare and my salmon was nice and flaky just as I had requested. Everyone else was happy with their meats and seafood as well.
Service from the waitresses was very friendly but inconsistent. Once the chef came we didn't see our waitress again for over 1/2 an hour. I sat through the entire meal with an empty glass and no one ever came by to ask about a refill which is pretty sad because the restaurant wasn't even 1/4 full. Then after we were completely finished our meal I got asked twice for a refill on my drink.
Robata is not too different from other hibachi themed restaurants that I've been too. It was entertaining and the food was good but nothing really wowed me. I've heard they have great sushi but I didn't get around to trying any. The sushi bar did look nice so maybe I'll go there again to check that out. -

I love this place, but wish they were open for lunch.

This is my favorite sushi place in the Lehigh Valley. -

The pace of service here is sooooooooooooooooo sluggish, I have no words. It's not a busy place, at all, especially on a Tuesday night, and puhlease, one waitress should be able to handle her six customers without keeping them waiting forever! The food was barely mediocre and the hibachi chef was quite the novice as he missed half of his silly tricks... I am thankful he didn't start juggling his knives, as that would have been disastrous. I ordered the chicken hibachi which came with a mushroom soup, salad and a shrimp appetizer. The green were certainly not fresh and the soup was a disgrace. The chicken and shrimp, thankfully, were rather tasty but that may have also been my hunger talking...

Mr. Shindo is absolutely wonderful! The food is always great no matter if you sit at the sushi bar or in the dining room. I have never had a bad experience. I would recommend this place to anyone. You can also get discounted gift cards on http://restuarant.com

We ate here last night. There were a few other people in the restaurant but we arrived very late. The waitress was careful to make our visit very pleasant. We got our drinks, our appetizers and our sushi all in a timely manner. The food was tasty! I would say this is a good place if one wants sushi in Allentown. It's not as good as sushi places in Manhattan or other larger cities, but it definitely ranks A-OK in any area

A japanese hibachi grill, Robata is best visited with friends. I was here a few years ago and enjoyed a good sushi meal. A little more nice than your average restaurant.

Went to Robata after getting a Groupon for some free value. Never heard of the place before. It's on South 9th St in Allentown, which may scare some people, but it did not seem too bad. It's not even a block from downtown, not out in the middle of some bad neighborhood.
Upon entering, you see Mr. Shindo at his sushi bar - he's been slicing sushi for 25 years there. Mrs.Shindo is hostess and one of the servers - she waited on us. Half of the restaurant is sushi, half is Hibachi-style, so it offers great variety. We went Sushi this visit. The service was a little slow to start, but then got better. A nice drink list is offered - we had a big Sapporo beer and a sake/saki wine. The menu is extensive, with all kinds of Sushi and lots of other Asian specialties. After ordering, a wonderful little 'salad' of interesting vegetables came out- we thought it was the salad that came with our orders. Turns out it is Mr Shindo's special appetizer that's 'on the house' and boy was it good- the veggies flavorful and the dressing is awesome! Then we got our order - edamame cooked nice and warm and salty; miso soup that was maybe a little light on the tofu; the real 'salad' with the order, which was no more than a bed of lettuce mix with an interesting Asian dressing; then our Sushi plates ($19 for 11pcs plus salad/soup). We lingered long over the sushi, as the prior offerings had already quashed our hunger. The tuna was nice, with the yellowtail being the most flavorful. Salmon left a little to be desired - maybe the way he slices it, or maybe it was farm-raised, but it was a bit mushy. Shrimp, egg, and tuna rolls were all regular quality, although tuna rolls rolled in sesame seeds is a nice touch. The ginger on the side was the most tender and delicious ever - and non-dyed (ginger is not pinkish, it's white), and the wasabi was kickin! We couldn't really justify dessert, but found something so interesting we had to try it - red bean and green tea ice creams enclosed in shells of rice dough. Wow was that good! A great way to finish off a good meal. It was about $60 for the whole deal, not bad for all that! We'll go back again...
