I am so happy I went here! I was on a trip from california and staying with a friend in Milwaukee, and woke up with a hankering for some good espresso. I saw that Roast was right down the street so I stopped in.
I walked in and knew that if I lived here, I would be at Roast every day. The atmosphere was so pleasant- I was warmly welcomed by a bearded barista, and browsed the artwork that apparently changes every so often. The decorations basically looked like a good urban outfitters display. I thought I should also mention the women's bathroom which features a superb color palette.
I got a shot of espresso and a regular brewed coffee. The espresso was a little bit pricey, but so delicious. I have never heard of this "Anodyne," but I guess it's local and that's what they serve and I loved it. The brewed coffee was super as well, and had a very robust and non-bitter flavor. No creamer necessary. This was not as pricey. The friend that I was with said that their specialty drinks are delicious as well. She recommends the April in Paris drink.
It seemed quiet to me, but I'm pretty sure that school was not in session. In the state that I saw it, it would be a great place to study.
In summary, so good. You should go there. -

I've been here a few times and their espresso is just okay. The last time I was here a couple months back when I had a UWCU errand to run, I thought I'd give it another try. The barista gave me major attitude for ordering a single shot of espresso, "why don't you just get two shots?", well, because I didn't want two shots, I wanted ONE shot. It was the whiniest of whines, like I'd kicked his puppy. I savor and enjoy my espresso, I don't throw it back like a cheap whiskey! Well, needless to say, Roast has seen the last of this espresso snob! They can stick the wide end of their tamper you know where!

Roast serves the best coffee in the city. Hands down.
That said, they are serving beans roasted by Anodyne, but in my opinion, they handle the beans better at Roast.
Ryan, the owner, clearly cares a lot about what he does and about his customers. Regardless of whether you're a regular or a first-time visitor, the staff at Roast is always friendly and welcoming... and NEVER snobbish which is a big deal for me. They are extremely well-informed and truly care about serving amazing coffee, so if you'd like to talk beans, they're more than happy to do so. If you just want to get your mocha and go, that's fine too. It's a perfect balance.
So I'm a flavored latte-drinker, and the flavor combinations at Roast, combined with the expert skill of the baristas (especially Ryan), combined with the best equipment and ingredients make for amazing lattes. I've tried every flavor, and they're all good.
And guess what else? They serve delicious food! Can it get any better? I think not. Perfect coffee, yummy sandwiches, wonderful employees... are you on your way right now? -

I love this place! I go here a lot...maybe even too much, but I can never get enough.
My favorite thing about it is the consistency. I've never had a drink taste not quite the same, or not as good as usual. Delicious every time.
The staff is always super friendly and down to earth, great atmosphere too. -

Roast Coffee Company takes me back 20 years to Rue de la Course on Magazine Street in New Orleans. And YES! Rue is reviewed on YELP! So check it out if you're heading to the Big Easy.
Okay, so ROAST hasn't got the history of the Garden District, or the New Orleans 'Je ne sais crois' but it's a college coffee shop with great coffee, tea, and chai; sandwiches named after alternative bands: my favorite is Radio Head (sans tomatoes) cucumber and dill cream cheese on a bagels or ciabatta. Local art is for sale on the walls and the hipster music is great. When it's over-the-top, wear your ear pods --you know you carry them everywhere!
Local young crowd, friendly service (they bring your food to your table--with a big smile behind dredlocks). Finally:
Comfortable seating,
accessible outlets,
free Wifi with purchase.
I love Roast and so will you! -

I really like Roast, a lot.
It may be densely populated with UWMers, but this is still probably my favorite coffee shop in MKE. I don't visit nearly enough. That will all change when it gets warm, as I could walk there, but parking is a beey-otch.
Why is Roast my favorite, you may ask? (Or you may not, but then you wouldn't be reading, now would you...)
1. They carry Anodyne coffee/espresso, it's available for purchase by the pound, too. And we all know Anodyne is AWESOME.
2. They have great food, and yes, menu items are named after bands. I kind of like this.
C. Rotating wall art is always interesting and thought-provoking, not just something someone threw up there.
D. They carry Rishi Tea, too! (Jasmine Pearl, what up!?!?)
5. The people that work there will smile at you and are nice and stuff.
Roast is a true independent coffee shop, and it adds quite a bit to the Milwaukee landscape. Yay! I *am* a fan. -

Well...they don't have anything gluten free. Almost nothing. So I got a salad. And it was huge, and good, and it's right next door to that bookstore that has zines. So yeah, it was ok.

Roast is the best place in the city to get coffee. The atmosphere there is really relaxed and laid back as well as the Baristas. Everyone is very friendly and very caring about what they do. They take the time to make everything perfect and delicious.
If you are ever in need of great coffee and a great atmosphere, Roast is your destination. -

Great little shop. the coffee's nice, and i like the feel of the place as a whole. what sets it apart is the staff. there's always someone real cool behind the counter who's willing to chat a bit or at least ask you how your day's going. there's really a lot to be said for good service, and roast delivers.

Roast is great! Each time I'm in the neighborhood I stop in for cup. They make some crazy iced coffee drink that has enough kick to wake the dead! Try one and you'll see through time and space j/k :) The cinnamon roll kicks ass too. Their staff is always friendly. Roast is a great neighborhood coffee shop.

It's an alright coffee shop -- They make a decent dirty chai and their hot chocolate is pretty good. However, I can't really stand the place too much due to the loud weird hipster music (which was overkill) and the band name based sandwiches and drinks (more overkill and weirds me out).
The place seems very packed on weekends making it a very uncomfortable place to study. The baristas I've had seem a bit apathetic or just a tad unresponsive for the most part. The lighting's also a bit too dim for my tastes.
I really would give this place two stars, except my drink comes out quick and once that's out of the way, it's all good. -

This is some mighty good stuff. Although I don't come here very regularly (I live in Chicago now), I've been here enough to have an opinion, I think. Their coffee's not bad and I find it amusing that their coffee drinks and food are named after band names. The bathroom wasn't great, but what jacks the rating of this place up to 5 stars is the salad. Man, oh man! The basil vinaigrette drenching this baby was simply divine! It's easily my favorite salad in the city. Get the Modest Mouse with cashews (if you're a vegetarian, otherwise get the salad with chicken as it already comes with cashews). It's fan-tast-ic!
Mmmm...basil vinaigrette... -

This is a nice little place right on Maryland and Locust. It's a generally quite place other than when they have a little live music now and then. Pretty good prices on things but it is annoying that there is a credit card limit. No other coffee shops have that in the area. All-in-All a nice place to settle down and get some homework done while enjoying a warm cup of coffee. Oh and free Wi-Fi is always nice even though you have to grab a little card with a code on it ever 1 hour.

I am from LA and I am visiting a friend in town, I have to say this coffee shop is pretty rad. The coffee is great and cheap. The food is excellent and must be names after someones favorite bands (Fatboy Slim and Janes Addiction) both really nice veggie sandwiches. Wireless is Free and there is a few lookers that trickle in the from the UWM. I will probably be posted up here in the AM throughout the weekend, come say hi.

Having been a regular at Roast for the last 3 years, I would have to say that I am more than a fan. Roast is where I come to study, hangout, & just relax. The enviroment is relaxing, and I find the music selection to be good overall. The staff is friendly and they all make an excellent drink. Since Roast started making food, the quality & speed have always been great. If you live on or near the east side or are driving by, it is worth stopping in & having a cup of coffee or one of there other great coffee/ non- coffee drinks. My personal favorite is the americano - misto. Hope you enjoy Roast as much as I do.
