Maybe I am just used to LAX. I don't know. But:
I know it's a regional airport, but it is obscenely expensive to fly in and out of, and it doesn't have to be this way. (FYI: Charlotte, NC is much cheaper).
The runway is WAY too short (Did you all know that DELL Computers was trying to come in and build a huge facility in Roanoke, but ended up not doing it because Roanoke's Government would not approve funding to have the runway lengthened to fit Dell's aircrafts?? (That would have helped Roanoke's dwindling economy so much!) In essence, More air traffic = lower prices.
It's a royal pain when I want to come in from California to visit family due to an apparently large number of pilots who cannot figure out how to land correctly at this airport due to the positioning of the mountains in conjunction to the runway. That means that if it's a teensy bit cloudy, and/or you have a lazy or untrained pilot - you aren't landing in Roanoke. I cannot even begin to tell you how many times this has happened to me. (I have a mother, stepfather, grandfather and an ex boyfriend who all have either been pilots or worked for 20+ years in aviation, and this is a commonly talked about problem in Roanoke's aviation.) As for myself, I've been flying in and out of ROA for 15 years and have "fond" memories of getting stuck in various places because of the airport's positioning, runway length, or half ass'd pilots.
Other than that, it is a relatively new airport. I remember when they were finishing up the final touches on the new terminal. I was so young! It's always clean and TSA people are usually friendly. Also, it's a breeze to navigate since it's so small. It's also the gateway from Los Angeles to my family, and for that and cleanliness, I will give ROA 3 stars.

My family loved to sit near the run way as the planes took off and landed...that is as close as I would come to flying out of Roanoke...between the days of smog and the mountains at nite...forget about it! LOL My life is scary enough...no need to tempt fate!
Now for entertainment...this is a great place....for people watching! LOL Yes..Roanoke is that Boring! LOL
Mall, movie, and Airport to people watch...Stop me...it's just too darn exciting. LOL
If you are looking for a hopping place to live...think again!
This airport is very small, and cute, to boot. It's easy to navigate (due to it's size) and the staff members are extremely friendly. Free wi-fi makes the delays a little more tolerable. In fact, I'm delayed right now. Thank goodness for free wifi and Yelp to help pass the time!

This place is easy to get in and out of, has cheap flights to Florida (Allegiant Air), and free wifi throughout.

Considering the fact that it is a regional airport, it gets the job done but can sometimes be annoying because flights aren't full enough to take off and can get canceled. Daily service to Atlanta, Chicago, NYC, Cincinatti, Dulles, and other nearby hubs. There is free internet which is great, even though you will never really have a layover here to really take advantage of it. Checking in takes about 10 minutes and when you fly enough the people start to remember you and are quite friendly. Its so easy to get to and so easy to get home from pretty much anywhere in Roanoke and for this it is the definition of convenience.

Easy to fly in and out of this airport. Big enough to have some decent flight schedules, but small enough to get in and out of quickly. We used this airport several times when we lived in the area, always easy.
