What happened to this place?! ): Used to be AMAZING. This is when I first fell in love with the pyramid cake with the alchy filling :P

This time, we got three large coffees and an egg tart. Everything was HORRIBLE. Was informed by my Aunt that the owners changed but that they still have a divine tiramisu. Until then, RJ, you only get one star :(

I get my cakes here for my mom because they do fancy stuff to their cake and the prices are reasonable for the type. My mom loves mango and they have mango cake here.

I got a heart shape mango cake for $38 and she loved it. It had fruit on it and chocolate.

I used to think this place was JJ bakery and I thought Oh I always bought my cake from JJ... I don't know what happened but I noticed... this is RJ.

My beau got the gift certificate here - when I told him not to! - Cuz you get $10 back for $100. Not really worth it but the lady kinda pushed him to buy it and he's not very good at saying no. So I didn't think that was cool for her to push him to buy it.

Pastries - pretty good. I love the hot dog bun.

    Credit card for only $10+.

this unassuming bakery in hacienda is solid.

there are way too many asian bakeries in rowland and hacienda that make subpar, low quality breads but rj is not one of them!
you can tell that whoever bakes the goods knows about bread.

there's another bakery several doors down from here towards little sheep that makes the worst tasting cake i've ever tasted. don't go there, come here!

the only cons are that it's cash only and they run out of breads around 4-5 PM.

Their cakes are divine, beautiful, and like many other Yelp-ers have stated -- art! I had their green tea matcha cake (I'm pretty sure I botched up the name.. but I believe they only have one green tea cake!!) and it was delicious. The cake was moist, had a red bean layer, and was just downright yummy.

Although their cake is delicious and beautiful, it is a bit on the expensive side. And I think that 85C (in Irvine) has cakes that are just as yummy, except just not as pretty/art-sy as RJ's.

Beautiful pastries that Asian mamas would approve of. (Asian mamas like their desserts "not too sweet".) Averaging $3.50 per pastry... not as expensive as other folks are making this place out to be.

    Friendly service.

This place really makes desserts into an art. Almost like Iron Chef, except the average person can still buy them =)

Yes, this place charges a bit more than JJ Bakery down the road, but I truly believe it's worth it. The desserts are artistic and varied, with prices ranging from $3 a piece to about $30 a cake. The cakes are fresh every time-I've never ever bought one and had it taste old or stale unlike JJ Bakery. This is definitely a quality over quantity kind of place.

As a bonus-sometimes if you go to the back of the bakery, you can look in the window and watch them make these cakes =)

Seating is limited, but they do a pretty good to go service.

This is a pretty good place to stop by for a quick lunch.  They have lunchboxes for $6 (I think), and for an extra $2 you can get a drink and a little dessert cake.  Oh and did I mention they have FANTUANS (RICE FREAKING BALLS)?!  I have not had these for like a decade, and when I least expected it, BAM there it is, then BAM again and it's gone, because I inhaled it.

The people who work here are incredibly nice, and the cakes are delicious.  MMmmmmmm.

OVERPRICED! i got a MINI slice of their coffee butter cream layer cake and it was 4 bucks! the cake itself wasn't bad but i think there's just too much butter in between the layers because the cream was more solid than creamy!

the lady behind the counter was SUPER friendly and greeted us as soon as we walked in, but i dont know if that's enough to bring me back!

love how they have tables here so you can eat-in though!

NOTE: it's located in the 99 ranch market plaza across from puente hills mall

My friend and I wandered here after lunch. The lady behind the counter was very friendly and asked if we'd like to try one of their cakes. We said sure, and she presented each of us a full piece of tiramisu! Wow, we thought, what did we do?

What I thought about the tiramisu:
    + Good base flavor
    + Delicate textures
    + Artful presentation
    + Fine ingredients
    - Slightly strong alcohol taste (wine)
    - Petite
    - Pricey

Note: Their cakes are generally smaller and pricier than the average Asian-American-bakery-cake because they use higher end ingredients.

There cakes are really really pretty. Just check out the photos and you will see what I mean.

As for taste, they taste alright, nothing too special. There cakes are not too sweet which is good, but they are pretty pricey. A cake on average is $40. If you are looking for something that is pretty and makes a great birthday photo this is your cake, but if you are just looking for a yummy cake, look else where.

By the way, they are selling drinks and boxed lunch now. Not sure if they are good, but don't expect too much.

this bakery is just a few stores from earthen!!! =)

so... of course.. stopping by was in order.
it's so clean in there and everything is so well organized.

i got the pineapple bun (my favorite) -- and wow that was the softest pineapple bun i've ever had and it wasn't too sweet either! just perfect. =)
didn't even feel heavy (could be bad or good). it was $1.35 for each.

i've read that this place has bad customer service.. but my experience was quite different. service was excellent.

the only downside was a lot of their baked goods were already sold out ... i guess they aren't replenished as quickly as 85C. =P

haven't tried any of their cakes yet... but i usually do not buy eat pretty cakes from these kinds of bakeries.

they also sell boba milk tea .. but we already got some and r.j. was selling it at a higher price ($2.99) than cafe 18.

I'll admit that i'm biased about this place but I'll explain why I simply won't give my patronage to this place anymore...

This used to be one of my favorite bakeries when it first opened... and then one of my college freshman summer, i decided it looked like a fun place to work and earn some extra money... so after one interview with the owner and manager (both of whom were very nice) I was hired on the spot to work for them...

Biggest mistake EVER! I only worked one day before I quit because of how horrible it was (and I'm the type of person who can put up with a lot of s**t...)

The girl who was "training me" (more like torturing me) had me crawling on the ground wiping the floor with a rag (because they were too cheap to get a dustpan, so we couldn't just sweep it, i think she actually told us to bring our own if we wanted to use one), the SAME DIRTY RAG was then used to wipe down all the windows, counter-tops, tables, and then used to WASH THE DISHES that you eat and drink off of!! When I asked her about it, she just blew me off... Keep in mind, she told us that this was around the time when the health inspection was expected, so this was probably them after they cleaned up their act.

Anyways, I swore that girl got a secret delight out of bossing someone around (she was on some sort of massive power-trip). Basically I did hard manual labor for the entire day, while she bossed us around, greeted customers and worked the cashier -- she didn't bother teaching us anything about the menu or the cakes (and she took ALL the tips, she told us we weren't allowed to touch it the first 2 months we were there)...

Needless to say, it wasn't worth the little bit of spending money I was getting paid to do all of that and put up with that, so i quit the next day... Anyways, regardless of how good or bad their cakes are, their business practices are messed up and they have no concerns for the health and well-being of their customers whatsoever... If the same rag is used to clean everything, imagine what might be baked into those cakes you're eating... GROSS!

    This is a blended review.
    - Their HOT JASMINE tea was the best I've had ever! So rich / deep in flavor (4 STARS; I would've given a 5 stars rating if I would've gotten a whole pot of the tea, instead of just a large cup of it, IT WAS THAT GOOD!)
    - Their green tea mouse cake was 3.5 stars, well balanced in sweetness, flavor, textures and presentation
    - 3 stars - their mango yogurt custard cup thingamajig was tasty on top, but the remainder was kind of the same texture as the green tea mouse (would've been nice to have some variation)
    - 1 star - they were out of cheesecake at 6:30pm BAH HUM BUG (good for them b/c they sold out but bad for us late diners)

The place underwent new ownership, as the main pastry chef/owner went back to Shanghai. The interiors were all different, and woodsy looking. The modern interiors (GONE), and see-through glass was all covered up. They were attempting to make room for individual baked breads for the front of the store. I think they missed the mark. What made this place great, was all the activity behind the glass. And the cool elegant interiors that went with with style of the cakes, desserts.

    Missing...and suggested improvements
    - The variety of cakes, desserts they had before
    - A gal behind the counter, offering free samples of other items
    - See through glass, modern furniture

    Strange offer...
    - We were asked if we come often (it was my first return visit in about 2 yrs)
    - Then they tried to sell us on a prepaid gift card $110 value for $100; the 9% discount is not enough incentive to drop a C-note plus $10 on a place where I come infrequently
    - It seemed odd to be offered this so we politely declined.

RJ Patisserie used to be king along with Diamond Bakery.  i remember that they ruled chinese bakery land in the 90s.  then other bakeries came out and made it just as good...and cheaper.

so instead of cutting the price, RJ decided to make the cake smaller.  it is not "da fong" ("generous" looking...in chinese).

the thing that they have going for them is that it is easily accessible and in the Ranch99 plaza.  if JJBakery (it's not far from there) was in the same plaza, they would be out of business within a year.  i actually prefer Nini Bakery on Hacienda Blvd.

but i came here because i wanted to try their chinese bento boxes.  it's mediocre and kinda expensive when you think about all your asian cafe choices.

don't get me wrong their breads and pastries are good.  i like the shaved ice that they serve also.  but when i can find more than a couple places that are cheaper and better..  well, that's when it gets a 3-star rating from me.

i'd rather support Nini Bakery.  If they had shaved ice (or if Bin Bin Konjac was nearby, etc), i would have no reason to go to RJP.

RJ?  are you listening?  doesn't matter if you have a picture of president clinton in the store.  you know that was in the 90s.

change, improve, or pack up..  sounds harsh but it's just business.

Its really hard to get over the prices on these cakes and I probably would never indulge in one of these myself if I was craving sweets. I got 3 of their individually sized cakes for each of my friends birthdays which came out to $12.50. One was a strawberry mousse/vanilla cake, the second was a orange/passion fruit mousse wrapped around a chocolate cake, and the third was a cake with cubes of cheesecake rolled in green tea powder topped with a creme brulee type crust.

The cakes are artistically presented and the flavors that are paired together is very unique. The cakes are extremely moist and you can certainly tell they use the best ingredients for each dessert. One thing I love about their cakes is the level of sweetness in each bite; perfection!

I'd definitely recommend this place if you're looking to spoil a friend for a special occasion or even yourself!

Delicious pastries, slightly pricey. (courtesy of momma bear)

Apparently this guy did a gig for Bill Clinton? Cool!

I had the bubble tea here, and I asked for the price. They said $2. I got excited. When I got the receipt, they charged me for the tea and then the bubbles. They try to be tricky. They piss me off. Why tell me one price and tack on extra, when you could avoid that altogether and be honest?

    SHAME ON YOU.

But at least they printed a receipt (though vaguely written).

This place has really gone downhill over the years. They used to make really good cakes and coffee. Just about a year or two ago they started selling breads, cheap drinks and lunch boxes imported from other restaurants.

However, it's called "RJ Patisserie" right? So they are supposed to have really good cakes. But noooo... it's just so different than what it's used to be.

NO PICTURES ALLOWED! Customers Don't come first.

Ok, so this place is called a Patisserie. I am pretty sure that France still has statutes that require a Patisserier Certification to use this classification.

So, what is a bakery if there is no customer service? What is a bakery if the customer doesn't come first? I am only posting the bad on this one.

    1. No pictures allowed. "What if I buy it?" Ok, then it is allowed.
Whatevers. Why no pictures? Trade secrets? Every other bakery
       doesn't mind.

    2. Mocha was 5 bucks and watery.
    3. Taro Smoothie was advertised at 1.99. But they only had large size which was 50 cents extra. Oh, and since it was taro it was an additional 50 cents. So, one taro smoothie and one Mocha came to 8 bucks. Say what?

Overall the bakery was average. It was the fact that the prices were just randomly thrown out and there is no price board hanging anywhere. No pictures.. well, when customers come first I will return. Until then Me thinks not.

There's something to be said for Asian sweets, they're (in general) not overly sweet. Is that why there's over a billion skinny people over there and over 100 million fatties here? I think so (at least partly why).

After dim-sum, the girl wanted to make a short trip over to her all time favorite pastry shop.  First of all, it's effing hot in Asian Land! No wonder home prices are so much cheaper out there, it's like the Sahara, but with Asians! The shopping center holding out sweets was completely packed with cars and people, there were so many food options here!

Inside the shop were typical Asian cakes, lots of fruits, jellies, fancy decorations and mini cakes of all kinds. We ordered two mini cakes to eat there, four to take home, two bags of cookies and a mango smoothie for the ride home.

The tiramisu I had there was not your standard tiramisu at all. While it did contain the deadly choking powered of coco on top, it was not layered with espresso soaked ladyfingers. It was good though, it had a single chunk of some other kind of cake in the center that was quite nice.

    http://www.yelp.com/bi...

The girl's berry cake thing was really good, full of berry flavor:

    http://www.yelp.com/bi...

I don't remember all the cakes we brought home but they were all great. The chocolate one especially was delicious.

    http://www.yelp.com/bi...

So I agree with my girl that this is a damn fine place for cakes, but it leaves my Americanized palate wanting something a bit more. More fat, more sugar? I have no idea. Maybe I'm not yet used to the idea of lighter cakes with fresher flavors. Still, it was well worth the drive.

Annoyed, upset stomach, and felt cheated. There are no other words to describe this place.
I will not go to this place for a million years.
I went there at a Sunday afternoon to give a taste of their heavily advertised cakes.
I ordered a bento box, a Tiramisu, and a milk tea.
The meat and rice in the bento box is cold, and the vegi has a weird wasabi taste. Eek!

The Tiramisu is overfilled with alcohol, and taste so disgusting.  They might as well give me a cheap Tequila shot.

The milk tea was alright, but it was served so slow that I already finished the bento.

It cost me $6.99 or something for the bento.  It advertised add $2.00 for a drink and dessert. But somehow total came out to be $14.05.

SHAME on them for no being honest.

The entire 30 minute dinning, I could hear the boss/manager pushing a customer to purchase $110 gift certificate for $100. Lame!.

Those of you who is look for a nice afternoon tea, I suggest you look for somewhere else. R.J is not worth to spend your money at all.

To top off our belated Christmas / Dad's birthday dinner, my brother's family bough the cake from RJ Patisserie.  I'm not normally a big eater of desserts, but I was won over by this cake.

First of all, it was beautifully done.  The outside was covered by thin slices of mango -- with the skin on, making a beautiful scallop design.  The top was covered by fresh fruit -- all super sweet and seasonal.  It's very Asiany-French, if there can be such a thing.

Secondly, the cake itself was delish!  Sometimes cakes can be way too sweet, but this one was nicely balanced and very fresh-tasting.

I'm reserving the last star for a dine-in experience, but so far, this is the place I'll go... when I'm visiting the 'rents and I get an attack of le'sweet tooth.

    PETITE and PRICEY.

Located in the same plaza as the 99 Ranch supermarket.

I was around the area, so I decided to dropped by and purchase two individual tiramisu cakes cause my mom loves them. The tiramisu cakes here are light and fluffy yet rich in espresso. Two of them because one just wont hit the spot, they are literally no bigger than the size of my fist and I have small hands. Each one was around $5, which is equivalent to a large pepperoni pizza at Little Caesar's!

Service is friendly and helpful. You can order to go or sit in and enjoy the pastries w/ a cup of coffee. I've ordered larger cakes from here for birthdays/ special occasions and everyone's a fan. :)

This is my favorite, I mean FAVORITE cake place in LA.  Well I should say in the United States, as I've never eaten anything better anywhere in the US than what RJ Patisserie serves.

I must warn you first though, that if you are a fan of American style cakes, such as 1 inch thickness of frosting on top and between sponges, you don't belong to this place.  This is not the place where you ponder "do I want yellow cake or white cake?  Should it have chocolate frosting or whip cream on top?" coz there are just so much more to cakes than that here.  This is also not the place where you get your sugar fix.

Most of RJ's cakes have combination of mousse, sponge, cream, gelatin, and fruits.  They are very refreshing, and not too sweet.  Born and raised in Japan, I am very used to sweet-but-sour, sweet-but-bitter sort of flavor,  and I can't take super sweet stuff like Belgium chocolates.  RJ's cakes are perfect for those who'd be in love with subtle flavor like myself.

I must note that their cakes are reasonably priced.  Each little piece is from $3 to $3.50.  It's not bad at all considering that the similar kind of cakes are served at bakery/cafe in Venice or Beverly Hills for something like $5.50 to $6, and they come with snooty atmosphere and less yummy-ness (and who wants that!?).

Seriously, try it out.  It is totally worth driving out there for.  The beautifully decorated cakes are also perfect for gifts/souvenir when you are invited for dinner.

    VERY CUTE.

    Who the heck thought?

You go in, the cakes look so pretty and cute!!!! The lady gave us samples of tira misu which were yummy.

We ordered black forest cake, green tea cake, and a mousse fruit tart thingy.

Black Forest was REALLY good. Light with chocolate shavings and cherries. I was retarded and didn't even know Black Forest had cherries until I saw them (which aren't my fave), but nevertheless the cake was yummy.

Green Tea - My gf passed on but it was worth a try.

The fruit tart had sponge cake inside and cream. IT WAS SO GOOD. We are definitely getting that again if we are in the area again.

The vienna coffee was good too and it came with a biscotti and a sugar stick.

Presentation - Very cute. VERY GOOD. The little plates even matched the color of the cakes. The coffee cup was cute and uniquely shaped. Sugar stirring stick was a good touch. They even bring the cakes and coffee on a serving platter. It makes you feel all yuppie. :)

Service - Excellent. The lady was attentive and funny. :)

Decor - Cute. Seating areas, cake casing, everything was cute.  You can even see them make the cakes in the back area. There's a mirror that points to them and you can see an aerial view as they work.

Light, yummy, and chocolatey with a side of coffee, and great, friendly service. That's 5 stars in my definition.

I'm not a big fan of Asian desserts, but RJ's is sooo good. You can see the detail and time that they put into every single dessert. My favorite is the fruit tart. It has an almond shell with a vanilla bean mousse .. topped with fresh fruit and, of course, the glaze. It is definitely worth the $3.75. No joke.

The service is really good. This place is worth the extra time at the gym. Lols =]

    Todai.

Thats how the pastries I got tasted like. It looks really pretty though, but so does buffet pastries.

Maybe I should try a cake instead of those minis next time. ]=/

I ordered the fruit tart. The fruits on top were fresh. It had half a strawberry, a piece of kiwi, a small bunch of mini grapes and thin slices of 'hilaw' mango. Underneath the fruits was a creme brulee like mixture and all of that was inside a hard crust. Nothing about it was sensational.

I'm sorry.  As much as I am a crazy fan.. or WAS.. i will no longer devote my time and taste buds to you.

It's been about two years? since I last visited your store................
Only difference is the quality of the cakes (which went DOWN) and the price of the cakes (which went UP!!!!!!!!)  what a shocker.

Excuse me, I love your cakes and they are pretty, yes.
I thought they were expensive to start off with, but by raising the price.. now it is NOT worth it.   I don't think I'll be returning or praising this place anymore.  (And you know how much I used to love this place by reading my previous review).  so sad.

    Was this review …?

This place makes GORGEOUS cakes, mini cakes and little sweet things of all sorts.  They offer free samples from time to time.

The mini desserts they make here are soo decadent, beautiful to look at, and not OVERLY sweet... I think this place is owned by Asians, it has that JJ Bakery type feel, but the desserts are obviously French influenced.

It's located in the 99 Ranch plaza across from Puente Hills Mall.  On the corner of Azusa Ave. and Colima.

Best cakes in town, moreover at times you can see the bakers making the cake in the back.  Kind of a small place however there usually isn't much of a wait.

When you go you must try the Pyramid chocolate cake.  Make sure to come during afternoon tea times as you can get a coffee and a cake for cheaper. Generally all their cakes are pretty good and you cannot go wrong by ordering their "seasonal" cakes.

This is the bakery to beat! Mr. RJ Guo is the King of Cake. I mean just look at his wall of press clippings, both in Chinese and English newspapers. And you definitely can't miss the huge portrait of him and former President Clinton -- he catered for him! So now you know this guy is legit if he can impress the man in Washington.

Often times, you get cake that looks so beautiful that you don't even want to eat it... and for good reason. Because most of the time, cake artists get too preoccupied in the aesthetic of the cake and not the actual taste and quality of the cake itself. Not at RJs! You are guaranteed to find gorgeous works of art that melt in your mouth. Tiramisu is delicious here and so is his mango covered mango mouse  heart-shaped cake.

My mom comes here all the time and believe me when I say she knows practically EVERY Chinese small business owner in Rowland Heights. Most of the long, thin rectangular cakes run for $18-20 with the fancier cakes ranging from $30-$50. They also have individual cakes that are about $3-$5/pop which is pretty typical at Asian bakeries. I'm only giving it 4 stars though because even though I indulge in fine dessert, I still think it's a LITTLE pricey.

Tip: For those of you who can see yourself coming here at least 5 times a year, you might want to think about investing in their "credit/gift" card. It costs $90 but you get $100 worth of purchasing power so if you buy cakes/sweets often get one! I have a BUNCH!!

I am not impressed, RJ. I had a cake from this bakery a few years ago, and I thought it was good. But.. I recently went (I work close-by now) and I found their cakes and pastries overpriced. Quality of ingredients wasn't in the least bit impressive. I guess if you're comparing it to other Asian bakeries, yeah, it's got the looks, but the taste? The texture? It's whatevs.

A macaron the size of a cow butthole was $3. Why cow butthole? Because the macaron just didn't look appealing. Blown out cow butthole.

BUT! I still bought shizz. Bag of cow buttholes for $15, a white chocolate mousse cake and a coffee mocha cake.

    Meh. Mediocre at best.

cute little pastry spot for afternoon tea.

    tasting:
    -chocolate cake- 3 stars
-mango mousse cake - 5 stars
-white chocolate hazelnut - 3 stars

they are known for their cakes but they also offer limited variety of bread and chinese lunchbox items. EXTREMELY nice staff (which is rare in this 'hood). place is pretty clean and since they just remodeled it, they have more seating now.
