This is one of my favorite courses. Designed by renowned golf course architect, Perry Maxwell, Riverside was once Austin Country Club. Ben Crenshaw and Tom Kite played here when they were young. Harvey Penick once lived behind the fifth tee. It's a challenging, yet fun course. Beautiful large trees frame the fairways. It's not unusual to see deer running across the course.
There are many great holes: #2 looks like a short, easy par-4, but don't be fooled. A long, narrow green is protected by a creek. A par can be turned into a double with one mistake. #6 has a small green, protected by two bunkers. A tough par. #14 is a driveable par-4. Three good shots gets you a birdie. # 16 is a tough hole. With a good drive, you will still have a long approach shot. Par here is almost like a birdie.
Riverside is always enjoyable to play. It's the kind of course if you play well, you can go low. If you play poorly, you won't mind so much because it's so pretty. -

Always go in the later afternoon, for those prices $25 or less it is well worth it, would not pay more though. Very open and pretty simple/easy course. I am in no way the best golfer, and usually play bogey golf here. Even if you have a bad fade you are safe here as there are few trouble spots with ob, most of the time you can play from the other fairways. Will say a great place for someone new to golf to come out and play a full 18 at, not much worry about rate of play, and def. alot easier of a course for a new comer. Over all 2.5 out of 5 for me.

Riverside was a decent place to play for a hot Sunday afternoon. The course used to be the old Austin Country Club.... so their are lots of big trees and big, open fairways. I don't think it's maintained as it probably once was as a Country Club. Some of the greens were in pretty bad shape, there is no driving range for pre-game practice, the tee boxes are somewhat difficult to find.... but overall it was a nice experience.
I would definitely go back to this course.... hopefully I can have a better game! -

Riverside is for the days when you just want to go out and play golf but don't want to spend much money. You can easily get a tee time here for Under $30 and sometimes under $25. Unfortunately the course conditions sometimes reflect the price that you pay. I've often seen huge patches of dirt in the middle of fairways. That being said it serves it's purpose as a cheap way to play the game we all love.

I was just at this course the other day Saturday afternoon visiting from Houston TX for the MS-150. I checked in 15 till 12 and the guy couldn't give me the 12 O'clock rate ($29). Since I don't live in Austin, I figured why not and paid the $39 and walked on the course.
I was expecting to see a pretty good course for $40, or at least in Houston you spend $40, the course is going to be pretty good. I was very disappointed from the first tee. The tee box was lop sided and the markers were like 1 yard from each other. The fairways were all in pretty decent shape, other than one of the par 5's where it was pretty much all dirt. The greens were absolutely HORRIBLE. If you like putting on hard dried up dirt, this course is for you.
The course is very short, the longest iron I used on most holes were a 7 iron. It has I believe 2 drivable par 4's which are kind of fun, but other than that I don't really like the layout all that much. I would of gave a 1 star review, but I shot a decent score so I gave it a 2. I could honestly say, I will never be going back to this course until they fix those greens or at least drop the price. -

Played this course sometime in March, 2011 and I'll say it wasn't the best course I've played. Very rough greens, rough fairways, pretty much rough all around. For the same amount of money, you can play Jimmy Clay and have a much better experience. No driving range, small putting green, not much here guys. I don't recommend playing this course anytime close to this post.

I've actually played this course atleast 6 times while i've been down here in Austin , Tx. It's generally an all-around decent course , nothing too spectacular and nothing to loathing.
I was actually impressed with the eating area , as it does have a great seating arrangement and is always with someone behind the counter to take your order , be it a hot or cold meal. Beer is always an option if you're just grabbing lunch.
I've actually noticed that a few of the golf staffers (pro-shop) are full time and generally get repectful responses from them without being too over zealous about selling something ; say i forgot my golf glove or a hat. They'll get you onto the course fairy quickly , even if you don't call ahead - it's actually when you're out on the course , you'll have to wait.
The 1st hole actually switches from a Par 3 - to a - Par 4 on the weekends , which can confuse a few people , maybe a sign would help.
As far as course conditions would go , it's regular o' bland Bermuda grass , but it holds well within the budget that they're working with and i've only found the greens with less than %70 coverage (once) on o few of the holes where they were on a ridge and water couldn't hold with help.
You will occasionally have to deal with jerks either no letting the groups behind them play though (4 hackers walking vs. two singles riding) ; which makes me wish there was a full time Marshall there , even it only on the weekends.
This course is easily for those getting into golf and want to play a course that easy on the pocket book and fun for beginners.
The course also has a great MEMBERS Program where it's actually cheaper to sign up for it , if you're looking to play alot throughout the year , and live within the Austin area. Preferred tee-times , etc.
