I've been here twice for after-work drinks and have had a great time both times. The outdoor area can't be beat in the summertime. What more can you ask for than a view of the river, a lively crowd, good drinks, and good service? I'll admit the food is not good, most things I've tried on the menu, I would not order again. But that doesn't mean you can't come here for an appetizer and drinks and still enjoy yourself.

This place is huge so you can always get a table quickly and out of all the happy hour places in the Loop, I feel like this is definitely the most happening one. Great atmosphere and lots of young professionals.

I must have walked by this place thousands of times, but I went here on a client lunch for the first time today. The place is excellent. It was slam packed with business men and women, but the service was still very attentive and prompt.

I went with the Beef Salad, which had large chunks of steak, avocado, blue cheese and a southwest ranch sauce. It had some kick, but was excellent. I was really in awe of the sandwiches that were being served at nearby tables. They were huge portions with fries that looked perfectly seasoned. I do wish that their lunch menu was more reasonably priced, but I think it's a great place for a business lunch.

Everytime I go here, I hope it'll be good. I'm continuously disappointed and the only redeeming quality of this place is the patio view of the Chicago River. Potbelly's gives you the same view, and they at least know what they are and rock it.

Anyway, I went here for lunch again today, and the food was mediocre at best. I tried the turkey melt, and was sadly underwhelmed. It was basically a mediocre turkey sandwich that was supposed to be on toasted bread, but was instead soggy. The bread had no structure, either. I was expecting something more panini-like. The flavors were good, but it was nothing to rave about.

I also hate how their bread looks so good and tastes so bad :( There's usually a stale taste to it and their chive butter really doesn't go with their raisin bread...or their wheat bread...or their white bread. Just random.

Finally, this place is super noisy and the service is sub-par. It took 10 minutes for our server to greet our table, and we didn't see her again until our check came. Oh yeah, and they're way overpriced for what you get.

There are much better places to eat at in the Loop!

Beware of the 4- and 5-star reviews for this place, they are clearly shills written by people who have some connection to the business.

This place has gross food and the staff have a terrible attitude. Believe the 2-star reviews . . . even the piped-in music is unpleasant.

It's an okay place to have some overpriced drinks on a nice summer day, if you have no other option, but skip the food at all costs. Blech.

I go to Rivers often because of the location to our office. It is a good place. I really enjoy the soups and everything on the menu is good. They recently added breakfast as well. Good value and will continue to go.

This place is overpriced, the only reason we go there is because my bf's office is in the same building and they are too lazy to go anywhere else.  Drinks are expensive, their food is way too expensive and ordinary.  They charge $10 for a 12" pizza that tastes like a tombstone pizza! And not the premium tombstone either that costs $2 more.

They do have an awesome outdoor patio though.  Last time we went though, a company had rented out the entire thing for their private event so we were stuck inside.  I am not a fan of the clientele here, I'm glad I don't work downtown, too many douchebag traders and banker types here.

After several dining experiences, I'd say you can pretty much skip the food here.  Perhaps growing up by the bounty of the Chesapeake has made me jaded, but their crab cake sandwich was so fried and greasy I nearly cried.

No matter, Rivers more than makes up for this with its happy hour.  Once you see their back patio overlooking the river, you'll never want to waste your time sitting inside at a table again.

Warm, summer evenings in the Loop were made to be spent out back, drink in hand, oh-so-subtly checking out the other twenty-something work-a-days.

Is it just me, or is most of the population of workers in the Loop male?

I'm not complaining, mind you, just an observation.

Sigh.  More Pinot, please.

Had a few Friday afternoon cocktails before getting on the train with a co-worker. We arrived around 3:45 and got a seat on the terrace overlooking the river (in the shade) with no problem. The place was rocking, happy hour must have started EARLY on that day, and it was a beautiful day. The patio gets very crowded, but there always seems like there is plenty of room.

Sara was our server and she was excellent. Even though she had a bunch of tables we always had a cold drink and she got the bill for me in a hurray (I had already missed one train).

Only complaint was that drinks are premium priced (small draft beer about $5, and wine is $9) and are served in plastic cups (I cant really argue with that).

Fun spot for a beer before the train.

Came here on the recommendation of a former co-worker during the warmer months. It is really cool having a drink right on the Chicago River and enjoying all my fellow hard workers in the great city of Chicago.

This place draws a pretty cool crowd and most importantly lots of attractive women. Pretty nice looking bar inside and out. Drinks were not that expensive and service wasn't bad either. During the warmer months, after 5PM, it can really get tight in here. I have never been here when it gets cold, but I'm sure they draw quite well. Never had the food either, but is willing to try next time.

Came here for lunch today with a friend around 1:00, got a table no problem.  Plenty of choices on the menu(s), I opted for the cajun blackened tuna (it comes as a sandwich but I opted for no bun).  It was very good, but not really cajun--it wasn't spicy at all.  But that was fine by me as I am a spice-wuss.  The Asian slaw that accompanied it was very good as well. Somewhat overpriced, but I knew that going in--I would guess it is where people do business lunches since it is in the Merc.  Our service was friendly and quick.
I would gladly go back on someone else's dime :)

Today is Jan 8th, 2009. I'm in Chicago and it is snowing. I haven't seen sunshine in months. My tan is a distant memory and my doctor says I'm suffering from what is called SAD (seasonal affective disorder).

In my mind it is the peak of summer, I'm sitting at Rivers, talking to some stranger and looking out on the cool green Chicago skyline reflecting off of the world famous Chicago river. I am drinking a Fat Tire, as the faintest droplet of sweats begins its slow decent down my forehead. Oh look a table just opened up close enough to hear the Reggae/Jazz band but not too close to where it will be too loud to have a conversation with my new Friday after work friends. I begin to drift off as a light lake breeze brushes my face and I think to myself "Man I am starting to catch a buzz. I wonder what I'm going to do tonight. Maybe I'll go to that show at Empty Bottle, and then the beach tomorrow, it is Saturday after all and the weather is supposed to be spectacular"...

Aah it is so damned cold... memories are like personal time machines...

In my opinion, there are two kinds of places to eat lunch by my office... Fast food or cafeteria-style.  There aren't too many options to actually sit down and be waited on by a server, let alone eateries that have silverware and non-plastic plates.  So what is one to do when your dad is working downtown and he wants to meet you for lunch?  Take him to Rivers, that's what!

Rivers is a bit of an anomaly in the 3 block radius of my office building.  Unlike most Loop restaurants, Rivers boasts a HUGE outdoor seating area right on the river (duh), so in the spring, summer and early fall months, dining al fresco is an absolute pleasure.  The inside isn't too shabby, either.  It's all leather booths, dark wood tables and white tablecloths.  The downside?  The inside of Rivers is bumpin' loud.  Seriously!  Prepare to strain your voice a bit while you shout to your dining companion.

You came to Rivers to eat, right?  So how about the food?  The crab cake sandwich is one of my faves.  Served on brioche bread with a yummy mayo and crisp fries, it's one of the more perfect sandwiches out there.  Daddy-o went with the charred beef salad.  It's full of bleu cheese, slices of charred beef (you pick how well done you want it) and veggies nestled on a bed of lettuce.  Simple and tasty.

Rivers is also a bit of an after-work bar scene, mostly in the summer months, because of their huge outdoor area.  Be prepared to elbow your way through a lot of Chads in suits and the Trixies who want to date them to get your Bud Light draft.  Served in a plastic cup.  Why plastic?  I may never know...

Alright, so I was generous before and gave Rivers a pretty middle of the road review for being solid but nothing special.

My experience yesterday, though, warrants the knocking off of one star.

It was Friday afternoon around 1:30. I'd had a very successful morning at work and decided that, because it was an exceptionally beautiful day, I wanted to sit by the river and have a glass of wine.

I wandered over to the outdoor patio of RIvers and stood there for a while while no one looked or said anything to me. I just assumed that the system was the same--seat yourself near the bar and all is well. So I sat at a two top right by the river and waited for another slacker friend to join me. About 15 minutes passed and several servers walked by me, but no one acknowledged me. Finally my friend arrived and we sat there, confused. I ended up stopping one of the waiters and asked if the server in our section had already been cut. He said "Oh, no, I'll let him know that you guys are here." I offered to move to another section for someone from the next shift but he assured me that it was fine. He was nice about it, but it was still a little frustrating. Interestingly enough, this was the same waiter who had walked by us at least four times prior to the conversation.

Our waiter arrived, flustered and clueless. I almost asked him if it was his first day, because he really just had no idea of what was going on. He asked if we are eating, and I said that we would probably split an appetizer. "We don't have appetizers." Really? A decent restaurant with an outdoor patio where there is a consistent crowd of traders getting hammered in the afternoons doesn't have appetizers on their patio menu? Good business decision, Rivers.

So I ask for a menu anyway and see if I can find anything on it that is light. Nothing really catches my eye, so I decide to have a liquid lunch. My friend gets a cup of their spicy tomato soup, which looked awesome. Each of us get a glass of wine.

Our waiter brings out a nice basket of bread and I figure hey, I might as well just eat the bread for lunch since they won't let me pay them for an appetizer. So I did.

Ultimately, after a few glasses of wine, I talked my friend into splitting a sandwich with me so as to avoid getting hammered at 2:30 on a Friday. I ordered the crabcake sandwich, as I have always enjoyed Rivers' crabcake appetizer (which is what I would have ordered if appetizers existed on their outdoor patio lunch menu). The sandwich was edible but nothing special. The crabcake was deep fried and oozing with grease (which just did not work for a cake of this size) and according to the menu came on brioche bread. However, it came out on what looked more like egg bread to me. My friend's comment: "It looks like Wonder bread dyed yellow." Either way, it was inappropriate for the sandwich and I wouldn't have ordered it if I had known it came on that type of bread. The fries were definitely not fresh, but I guess I just expect that when eating at an odd hour between lunch and dinner.

Anyway, I think after this I certainly will not go out of my way to go to Rivers. While it had great ambiance and was very relaxing yesterday afternoon, the service and food will prompt me to find another riverside spot for future afternoon slacking.

After my third work lunch here, I continue to remain underwhelmed. Given past experiences, I ordered the least offensive thing I could find-- soup and salad. Food was passable, but the presentation was still off, with the server bringing soup and salad on the same cold plate. I could have been more vocal in my preferences (methinks not, in a group business setting), but fortunately for Rivers, I was feeling magnanimous and held my tongue.

My company shares a building with Rivers Bistro, it's basically 20 feet from our elevators...hence, happy hour and business lunch/drinks happen here...

I hate it. The menu has about 3 decent items on it, the rest are badly prepared or just big ol' greasy messes. The drinks are way watered down...which actually, may be a good thing since I'm drinking around people I work with...and the service is meh, I've had some pretty douche-bag type servers...and the others I wouldn't go so far as to  say they rocked, but they were at least friendly-ambivalent.

But it is awesome to come here after work on a Friday and watch the office girls get wasted and try to sing along with Mariah Carey and Sheryl Crow (did I mention, Rivers plays the worst effing music, EVER).

Talk to me last year, and I would have given this place a 4! Now, Rivers is just another Loop-dump, where middle aged married guys go to mack on cougars and young-lings. It's gross.

The last few times I came here for after-hour cocktails, it was a mess. Our waitress did a horrible job at keeping track of our liquor orders. We told her over and over, and she couldn't remember. Then she stopped coming to our table and sent in her backup, a mean gnarly-lookin piece of work. She had severe attitude, and got fussy with you over nothing. Gee, way to be customer service oriented.

The last time I had lunch here, same experience. Our waitress took our order, dropped off some bread, came by with our drinks...and that was it.

Literally....

The kitchen help brought out the food, and we had to ask the bus boy for soda re-fills.

No tip, son.

I've almost forgotten about this place until we came down to the city for lunch with some consultants.  I recall their outdoor patio being great for happy hour with a nice view of the Chicago river and we thoroughly enjoyed our lunch outside, as well.  This is also a great option since it's so close to Union Station & Ogilive Station, as well.

The food was well-prepared and service was helpful and knowledgeable.  One of the guys in the group got this shrimp and mussels risotto and he mentioned that he had so much seafood in his risotto!  My soup du jour was bland (broccoli soup) but I thoroughly enjoyed my steak salad which had hidden bits of avocado which I didn't expect but was thrilled to find.  My colleague had this really yummy looking seared ahi salad where her ahi was practically raw and seared to perfection!  Overall, a great lunch spot in the Loop and for happy hour, too.

I've never stopped by here for more than a drink or two, but it's a great place to throw back a few after work.  We all know that Chicago Summers are short and sweet so you need to take advantage of every nice day we get.  And Rivers is a perfect place to spend one of those nice days after work.  The outdoor patio overlooking the Chicago River fills up to standing room only very quickly with the after work crowd but if you can get a table or even just a bar stool its a great place to host a happy hour or take in the last bits of sun for the day.

Now, don't get me wrong- this place isn't a disaster or anything. The service is okay. The food is okay. The ambiance is a little Holiday Inn....but all in all, you'll get a satisfactory meal.

Why only three stars, then? Well, I'm not one to spend a lot of money or time on lunch, and this place requires a little bit more of both than I'd ideally like to give. The menu reads really ambitious- with items like butternut squash gnocchi and steamed sea bass with baby bock choi- but ends up tasting a little like the Olive Garden chef got in over his head.

Good for work lunches or dinners, but if it's your free time, I suggest going somewhere else.

So it's winter in Chicago and I'm at work (yelping of course) and it's freezing and snowing outside so all I can do is day dream about the good old summer days of HAPPY HOUR on Friday's at Rivers.  This place is crazy over priced and the food isn't all that, but it really is the perfect place to hang out after a long week of work (if your work location is in a 3 block radius of course).  The outside patio is enormous and there has been live music everytime that I have been there.  I am looking forward to sunshine and Fat Tires at Rivers again!!

I find this place a bit meh.

I found myself here due to a client happy hour one day during the work week.  Since I don't drink because I'd rather waste calories on food, I was hoping to have a Diet Pepsi or hand-squeezed lemonade to which they had none, boo.  Ah well.

We had some appetizers.  The chicken quesadilla was quite bizarre.  There was an Ahi-Tuna crispy thing and that was quite tasty.  I should have had more of that, it was delightful.  A plate of crispy chicken tenders were there as well and as a sucker for fried food, oh my, they were awesome as well.

We were outside, and as the time passed, more and more suits came.  I almost felt like it was just too much business and not enough leisure.  I'm glad I wasn't there with the girls or the hubs, because I would have felt so out of place.  So, this fits the bill for work gatherings most definitely.

Our waitress was very prompt and attentive to the big group.

I did enjoy the live music going on, that was pleasant.

Yeah, the bistro and sit down here is great. The general atmosphere and quality of food is fantastic for people working in the loop, but let me tell something secret!

Okay, it's not really truly a secret because everyone who works in 10 and 30 S Wacker knows this, but the fast food counter Rivers operates is super good!

We're talking a bacon cheeseburger with fries and soda like the restaurant for $5.00! This isn't as good as Blackie's but it's also only a 5-10 minute wait during lunch rush and it's the same price as McDonald's (which I love like a bad-a$$ forlorn lover that's going to kill me).

They also have a killer buffalo chicken sandwich that's so saucy and crunchy that you can also get without breading.

The Grouper fish sandwich that they serve at the bistro is also available on their fast food menu.

You know what else they offer that's stupendous? Excellent soup. Their soup is the heavy type that'll get you through winter without ever feeling bitterly cold except about the stupid CTA and maybe that jerk who refuses to shovel. Spicy Tortilla and a Sweet  Corn Chowder. Add hot sauce to the Chowder and it's just unbelievably flavorful and filling.

So don't forget that this place is awesome for lunch too!

I recently switched firms and am now over by Union Station (again) so, I'm back to having lunch at Rivers.  It's okay....just okay.  I suggest sitting in the bar area, wherein you don't have to have a reservation or even wait for a hostess to seat you and the overall service is much faster than in the main dining room.

For those of you who don't like to spend the extra bean on lunches, I can say that I usually meet up with a friend and we split the chicken fingers ($7.95) and we're both completely stuffed for a very low price.  Plus, the honey mustard sauce rocks.

I also dig the soup/salad combo.  The spicy latin soup is f'ing amazing, I could eat it by the bucket.  However, the ceaser salad is somewhat bland so I suggest adding fresh pepper to the mix for that added flavor.

Will give Rivers 4-5 stars for their bloody marys....pretty damn good.

A couple of stars removed for the outdated decor and snobby waitstaff.

Great after work happy hour spot!  There is plenty of outdoor seating including an outdoor bar right on the patio and the outdoor seating is right on the river making a really pretty spot to sit and hang out after a long week at work.  The drink prices are very reasonable for that area also.

One of my favorite parts of this place is the people watching.  It never fails to surprise me how drunk people will let themselves get on a Friday at 6 while they are sitting with their boss.  Who knows, maybe that is me too and I don't even realize it.

Check this place out on a Friday afternoon for a couple beers after work and you won't be disappointed.  Appetizers are pretty decent bar food also!

Rivers is great, our company always had happy hours here.  So many stories like the guy jumping in the River and couldn't get out the other side.  The women on the boats flashing us.  One of the sr. consultants grabbing a manager in a headlock while the partners poured beer all over him and jealous lawyers from the other table asking what we did and whether they could get a job at our firm...

The drinks are pricey but good.  The appetizers are fantastic, but then again what isn't when you're hammered.  Lots of good times here.

The only reason that I give it a 4 is because you have to come really early to get a table.  You have to be here super early to get a table outside.  The band was really good although nobody was paying attention.  They did take request which I thought was pretty cool.

The drinks are strong and the waiters are somewhat cute.  It's a rocking good time.  Watch out for traders though, they might steal your soul...

I work in the Civic Opera Building's office tower, so being right across the street, River's is a favorite of mine for after-work drinks or lunch meetings with colleagues.

The best part is definitely the gigantron patio. We love going there to eat and drink outside in the summer. Lots of companies rent out space on the patio for happy hours, so expect it to be packed around 5 on a workday, but we've always been able to snag a table somewhere and we usually have a group of 8 or so.

I've tried a variety of food--salads, appetizers, salmon fettucine alfredo (so good)--and everything's been great. Service is good, drinks are good, and this is an all-around solid place to grab lunch, dinner, or drinks with friends/colleagues if you're in the Loop.

This place is ....eh. I can't really think of a reason i would ever want to go back. I should have listened to all the Yelp reviews below that stress this is a place for drinks, not fine dining. In the interest of getting to the ballet on time, we had to eat somewhere close to the opera house, and it doesn't get closer than across the street.

There isn't really any ambiance here -- its like being in a hotel bar. And as one reviewer mentioned below, the menu tries way too hard and doesn't quite deliver. I ordered the crab encrusted halibut and my bf got the shellstock fettucine. My halibut came atop a bed of mashed potatotes and in a pool of a type of sweet and sour sauce. It was strange, but tasted fine. I was surprised and somewhat disappointed by the small portion of my bf's $19 pasta dish -- it was literally a small bowl.

When we saw our bill was over $100 (we each had a couple drinks, an appetizer and two entrees), we felt silly. Like we could have gotten steaks and margaritas at bennigans and would have been just as satisfied food-wise, for a fraction of the price.

Their outdoor patio is great for happy hour, though it's usually so crowded (especially on Fridays) that service ends up being anywhere from ultra slow to practically non-existent.  But hey -- you get a great view of the Chicago river plus they serve Fat Tire so it's all good.

I've also had lunch in their bar area and it's pretty decent too.  Nice selection of choices and the prices are about right for what you're getting.  The red snapper sandwich is excellent and their angel hair pasta is terrific as long as you don't mind having a disproportionate amount of seafood with your pasta (no such thing as too much shrimp and calamari in my book!).

I went here for lunch with Becki S. and another friend.  We were really disappointed in how long it took to get our food, pay, or even get the server's attention.  By her attitude, I'm really hoping it was her last day and she just couldn't wait to get out of there.  Worst service ever!

On the flipside, try Rivers To Go which is inside the lobby.  It is only open during breakfast and lunch.  Try a bagel with jam for 1 little dollar or save a whole bunch of cash during lunch.  The to go offerings have the same amount of food and are $2-3 cheaper than the outside dining options.  My favorite is the cheeseburger with fries and a drink that costs less than $5.  Plus, the ladies who work at the counter are incredibly nice and greet you by name once you've eaten there enough:)

Rivers To Go gets 5.5 stars!

It is a great location for food and drinks right along the river and gives you a good chance to enjoy some of the summer nights.

The food is good but they don't have many beer selections during the happy hour.

Happy hour drinks on the river don't get much better than Rivers. I love the outdoor bar area. The indoor dining year round is great too but I have to say I've only ever had one item off the menu. But I've eaten here about 15 times. The Ahi Tune Salad is FANTASTIC.  I don't know what the dressing is, but it's damn good. Lunchtime gets crowded so you need a reservation but the service is always prompt and polite. They know about their wine and other menu items. I've had dessert a couple of times, and it's always top notch.

OK so it's a little pricey. But it s a nice Loop restaurant. It has every right to be a little expensive. If the boss is buying, pick this place.

This place is great for happy hour because of the outdoor seating right on the River...but if you show up too much after 4:30 good luck finding a seat right away. The drinks are priced like everything else in the Loop and im pretty sure they dont have any type of specials.

ONE WARNING: do NOT go here for lunch if you have a set time to be back at work. The wait staff was very slow and inconsiderate of our one hour lunch time allowance. We had to ask for our reciept and boxes before we even received our lunch...and THEN had to wait 15min more for her to pick up our credit cards for payment.

You wouldve thought that us letting her know we were in a hurry and asking for all that before our food came wouldve been enough of a hint that we needed to leave, but she didnt seem to care!

**EDIT** I hear that the lunch take out is amazing and less expensive than sitting down. I'll give it another shot!

We recently went to Rivers for Happy Hour on a Friday night.  We had a large group of us, so we had to get some representatives get there early to get enough seating for all of us.

I wasn't a huge fan.  Maybe because I'm getting old, I just don't have the patience like I used to.  They had a band playing and it was way too loud.   And they sucked.  We were constantly screaming into each other's ears and many of our party left early because it was just too much.

We had beer, nothing too fancy.  Service was OK.  We weren't thrilled with some of the attitude.  I didn't have any food, but friends said it was good.  We all thought it was a bit pricey.

Again, I think I'm just old, so take this review with a grain of salt.

I rely on Rivers To Go on the ground floor of my building for quick breakfasts and lunches, so it makes me sad to give them just 3 stars. The breakfast sandwiches are outstanding, they have the best "everything" bagels around, and the people are always super nice, but my god are they overpriced for everything other than breakfast.

Their lunch menu takes the word "mediocre" to a whole new level. The sandwiches? Not bad, but certainly not worth $6-$8. The pizza? Not bad, I suppose. The gumbo, the chicken strips, the salads, all not bad. Just way overpriced. The only good thing is the cheeseburger deal, which is fairly priced and gives you a great flame-broiled burger. Everything else is completely forgettable in every way.

Rivers is the only restaurant remaining in the 10 S. and 30 S. Wacker complex.  This one restaurant serves two office towers and has very little competition in the neighboring blocks.

Maybe that's why it's so mediocre and remains busy.  I work in one of the towers and have tried Rivers for lunch about half a dozen times in recent years.  Every time I try a different dish hoping to find something that is not bland or smothered in cheese or over-cooked.  I had a lunch salad once that was inoffensive.

The servers mostly don't care.  They're not obnoxious or snooty.  It's just that most of them seem more interested in when their shift ends than in serving people.

Even the restaurant's main resource, its location, is not put to good use.  There is a river nearby, but it's a story below the restaurant.  And most of the tables are well away from the window anyway.  Only when Rivers opens for outdoor dining for about four months of the year does the Chicago River become part of the experience.  The rest of the time diners sit in a tasteful but forgettable ambiance that could have been decorated 20 years ago.

The restaurant's saving grace is that it has stimulated some competition in the past couple of years.  One North, Lloyds and Townhouse have opened up across Wacker Drive.  They're better bets if you want a good meal and more pizzazz.  For a less expensive but tastier sit-down meal than you can get at Rivers, go across Monroe Street to Pazzo's.  It even offers access to the Chicago River that's at least as nice as Rivers'.
