I am extending to Riverplace Hotel 5 Stars, but please read on.
I travel to Portland often from my residence in California. I wish that I knew of Yelp or City Search before I came upon River Place as, prior, I stayed at most of the other down-town and airport proximate properties: Westin, Hilton, Marriott, Governor, Shilo, Embassy. Hands down, Riverplace tops them all. Hey - Westin, Marriott, Governor, Embassy - eat your hearts out.
This property is NOT located in/amidst the downtown core. Rather, it is located at waters' edge - the Willamette River. BUT, Portland is a walking town: you can get from the hotel entrance to any shopping, restaurant or business office in a matter of minutes. If you decide not to venture far from the hotel, immediately nearby a fantastic harborside pub/eatery called HARBORSIDE - a VERY friendly and attentive bar staff, wait staff, numerous flat screens for sports fanatics and a formal dining room. Go there alone or with friends - you will not be disappointed.
The Hotel dining room (just off the lobby) is GREAT for intimate dining, all day.........as is the lobby bar.....just to sit at the bar or by the fireplace....enjoy appetizers, select bar menu dining options and/or your favorite beverage YEAR ROUND.
The hotel rooms are LARGE.....from a single (King or Queen) to a Suite (inclusive of woodburning fireplaces). Keep in mind, however, this property is NOT a high tech high rise property.....It, if anything, is more like a home-away-from home.....from the moment you arrive. The Valet and bell staff is 'seasoned' and northwesterly 'personal'. I never have 'a care' when I stay at Riverplace.....the staff goes beyond the W Hotel slogan: 'whatever, whenever'!
Riverplace Hotel is a pet friendly property. Do not be surprised is dogs (on leash) are more prevalent four-feeters than two-feeters.
ONLY downer: the hotel does not have a health club or pool on site. However, adjacent is the River Place Athletic Club (full gym, indoor pool, steam, sauna, etc).....within 2 blocks. The Hotel can provide a complimentary day pass if you ask.
My compliments (as you may wish to offer, if you stay at Riverplace) to the Hotel management and seasoned staff.
II stayed here from 6/16-6/20/2009 in a 1 bedroom residential suite room number 516 with my lova man because I like to have a lot of room and we like to alternate between cooking and dining out when vacationing because we both have skillz in the kitchen!.
I had a lot of high expectations for Riverplace Hotel after reading the reviews here and on another website that focuses on travel but in actuality I was not blown away.
This is what I loved:
1. The location is excellent! Right on the Williamette River, lots of people out and about, riding bikes, skateboarding, jogging, walking their dogs, etc. The downtown area is a very short walk which was nice.
2. The services from a couple of the vendors at the little shops on the Riverwalk. I got a really good deal on an amber pendant and ring from the Torquoise Lady!
This is what I liked:
1. Kaylin who played the role of check-in clerk and concierge was a doll and very welcoming.
2. The residential suite was nicely decorated but not as plush as we would have liked
3. The featherbed topper on the mattress and 6 pillows made sleeping a joy.
This is what I didn't like:
1. Customer service was lacking in that if you ask multiple people the same question, you get different answers. It's ok to say "I don't know" let me ask someone who does instead of being off the cuff! One example was in how we were given access to the residential suite. We thought the walking distance between where we parked and where we could enter the property was inconvenient because there was a gate in the underground parking lot that would have led us up to our suite. so I asked if there was another way that we could enter the property that is closer to where we were staying through one of the gates. I was told "no" and then I walked away. The next day I complained and asked someone else and was given a key to access the property through the gate off the parking lot where we parked. Problem was, the key only worked when we headed from the property into the parking lot, but didn't work when trying to enter the property from the parking lot!
2. Cost of parking was awful! $28/day for valet parking and there is only one person working valet which means you have to wait, the next option was to park in the garage for $17/day and the last option is limited metered parking on the street where you need to either re-up in 90 mins or 3 hour increments up until 7pm.
Overall it was an ok stay, probably one of the best hotels that you could experience in Portland but is truly middle of the road for the types of hotels I have stayed in worldwide.
I just stood here, and I was impressed. I have stayed in many many 5 star hotel and exclusive resorts.
Staff: I received excellent service, from the valet guy to the the morning coffee guy. What I liked most, was that everyone seemed genuinely nice. Sincerely nice. One night, we didn't go out but stayed in and ordered in. Kirsten was like our personal server. She was the only one staffed for room service and after a couple of rounds of tini's, then dinner we saw her many times. She gave excellent service and was very personable, giving us tips on funky portlandish places to go.
Food; well it was limited (very limited) menu after 11pm....oooops we took our time with our tini's and got wrapped up in Bond's movie: Dr No. M salad was descent except for a few unfresh pieces of chicken. It's like they had a little older prepared chicken and mixed it up with the fresher stuff. Yuck. We also ordered the Mediterranean plate which had some yummy chutney, hummus served with pita. Yummy.
Room: MAGZ to the MAX! Just for $525 we got the best room in the place; The Grand Suite. WHAT A DEAL or should I say steal ?! It was very large, with a 10 person dining table with a wet bar, a cool living room with a cozy/cool fireplace with more than enough firewood, guest bathroom, big bedroom and a huge bath. Only down about bathroom was a tiny shower (and a little antiquated). This suite was loaded with windows...which at night....OMG...the lights and the lights bouncing off the river...BRILLZ! This room was worth every penny and I was surprised it wasn't more expensive.
Massages: ...eh. We both rated our in-room massages about a 6 outta 10. The hotel does not have a spa thus the in-room treatments. The girls were politely nice, but ripped us out of about 15 minutes of treatment. We ordered the 100 minute massage each, they started about 4:40pm (maybe even 4:45- I had accidentally left my phone on and a call came in about 5-7minutes 4:54 after the massage had started) and I was back in my robe looking at my phone at 6:06...you do the math. I wouldn't recommend this service...or just set the timer on your phone and pay for what you received.
All in all I would recommend this hotel. Oh yes, GREAT location, right on the river walk, and within walking distance to many restaurants. Bring work out gear, cuz this location is conducive to a good little walk or run.
I attended an event here and was both surprised and impressed by their execution. The building itself is quite pleasant, with the additional bonus of being right on the water. Their hors d'oeuvres presentation and flavor was also friendly to the vegan/vegetarian and carnivore - a major plus.
Service staff was very friendly and patient with the occasionally difficult guests attending the event. A quality that's difficult to come by in DC.
Dear Santa,
I know that this is too soon since Christmas just passed a week ago, but I already have a request for a good thing you can bring me for next Christmas.
I want that Larkspur Collection FeatherBorne King bed like what they have at the Riverplace Hotel. The bed was so comfy outfitted with 250 thread count sheets, a quilted down comforter, a duvet cover and a selection of six pillows made me barely can't stay awake.
If that's too much to ask, maybe a gift certificate to stay at this nice hotel, will be just fine. What's not to love about this simple but elegant hotel? The price range of the hotel is from $159 a night, but you can get better deals through Priceline. I bid my recent stay there for $90 a night. You can't ask for more, they have it all from friendly staff, Three Degrees Restaurant on site, Room Service, Flat Screen TV, pretty big bath tub, and complimentary robes to wear while you are staying there.
I'll promise I'll be good this year. Hopefully, I will get what I want by Christmas. Thank you, Santa.
Yours,
Olivia
I would give this hotel 5 stars but it's expensive.
This is a lovely place to stay if you're visiting Portland. It's right on the river, and you can easily walk to downtown from here. I stayed in a suite that was more like a condo. It had a full-sized kitchen, dining area, patio, and living room with fireplace.
It was so wonderful hanging out at Riverside that one night we decided to order take out food and stay in our suite rather than go out for dinner.
Here's what I love: top-notch service, relaxing atmosphere, consistent and reliable
Here's what I hate: restaurant could be better
For over a year, I've been traveling to Portland on business and always stay at RiverPlace, which is now a Larkspur hotel. What that means is you won't feel like you're staying at yet another Marriott, but someplace infinitely more warm and special. It has all the amenities I need, such as a fast, free, good quality internet connection; peace and quiet; and extremely clean, comfortable surroundings. RiverPlace feels just like you're at home--if your home is incredibly posh and has a crack staff catering to your every whim.
I cannot say enough about how friendly and helpful the people are at RiverPlace. Whether it is a homemade cookie when you've just come in out of the rain, your choice of newspapers in the morning, or those little cards that warn you of impending weather, their personal touches help ease the stress of travelling. On one visit, I was ill and... ok I'll just state it: I threw up in the hallway. I phoned housekeeping to let them know and the first thing they did was to ask if I was alright and could they bring me up some tea! This is the kind of care and service that is invaluable when you are far from home.
The most important thing a hotel can afford you is a good night's sleep, and you will certainly get that at RiverPlace. I'm not sure they have a fancy "bedding system™" or anything, but you'll get quiet, and really, how many places have that and are still convenient to downtown? Sleep is so important on any business trip, and the riverfront location, generously sized rooms, and noise-baffling walls yield the peace of mind needed to get as much as you need.
Some folks have mentioned the price, and I think it is actually a value for what you get. It isn't that much more than comparable properties in the vicinity, but you get so much for that little extra. If you take into account the convenience of the location, security of knowing you'll receive consistently excellent service and actually get a full night's sleep (or a comfortable enough desk and fast enough internet to work all night long) it is just the right price. I will admit that I think the restaurant isn't a good value for dinner, especially when there are other places nearby to dine that are, but I find fault with nothing else.
I heartily recommend RiverPlace Hotel. From the river views of early morning kayakers, to the lap blanket provided on the occasional chair, you will experience the comfort and tranquility necessary to take on the world. Well... at least Southwest Portland.
Here's a little secret I'm loathe to share: The Three Degrees bar and restaurant in this hotel has one of the best happy hours in the city. From 3-6 house cocktails (lemon drops, infused vodkas, the works) are a slim $3 and appetizers are similarly cheap. After 6pm the prices spike back up to $7 for cocktails and much more for food.
The Riverplace is located near the yacht club, nestled in next to the park and the base of the Hawthorne bridge. Around 5 you can get a seat on the patio and watch the dragon boat rowers do stretches and launch for their evening workout. Bikers, joggers, families, and every other inhabitant of the city pass by under your nose on the waterfront trail, and during most of the year the Canadian Geese can be seen chowing on grass or landing in the river.
The professional downtown crowd has discovered the bar and happy hour, but they're not there until 5 or later, which leads to my dearly coveted advice:
Pro Tip: Grab your laptop to take advantage of the free hotel wi-fi, and get a booth overlooking the river when happy hour starts at 3. Then enjoy several hours of work and cheap fancy drinks while you have the place to yourself!
This is also, naturally, a good place to bring clients, coworkers, or out-of-towners.
Did anyone say HAPPY HOUR? If you are downtown between 3-6 you definitely need to make a stop here. There is nothing better than sitting outside on a beautiful day drinking $3 lemon drops and eating lots of delicious cheap appetizers! Get there early if you plan to sit outside because if the weather is nice the patio fills up quickly.
