Planned kind of a last minute trip to Savannah for St. Patricks Day and unbelievably found this Inn RIGHT on River Street available. This is an old historic hotel that still holds all of the charm of history. You almost feel as if you could go to sleep and find yourself awaking in another time! The rooms are large and clean. The refurbishment to bring the establishment to modern standards is excellent. The bed was very comfortable.

The location of this establishment in relationship to River Street is one of it's GREATEST assets. Of course when River Street is loud and hopping, so is the room. Especially during St.Patty's Day, if you are not staying at RSI to BE part of the party, you'd likely be frustrated by the noise. We LOVED it and will be visiting again.

It's really hard to rate the River Street Inn. It's a historic hotel with winding hallways and no two rooms are the same. Some are gorgeous with great views, some are in need of a facelift and kind of smell like mildew. How you feel about the hotel will surely be determined by how much the check in guy likes you.

We didn't know anything about the geography of Savannah when we checked in and were happy to get a "3rd floor" city view room. What we walked into was an old basement room facing a cobblestone and brick wall, under an overpass. Not exactly charming and scenic. It looked like it had been renovated in the early 90's, with old drapes and a beige tile bathroom. Not dirty necessarily, just in need of some upgrades. We learned that since there is such a steep incline between River Street and Bay Street, you have to be on the 4th floor of River to be on street level of Bay. Therefore, if you request a city view room, you will only actually get a view of the city from the 5th (top) floor. This is kind of misleading on their website, but whatever.

We decided we wanted to stay in the central hotel area... hopefully not facing a wall, and were given a water view room on the 3rd floor which was a huge improvement. Or so we thought. The more we looked around, we realized we hadn't just given up our big bathroom and king size bed, we'd also given up our mini-fridge and coffee maker. Le sigh.

When we checked in, we were informed that the elevator was "temporarily" out of order, which isn't a big deal for us but could be for other guests. It looked like the paper signs hadn't exactly been put up recently, and showed no signs of being fixed while we were there. So the elderly and lazy might want to stay away.

We had mixed experiences with hotel staff, and it seemed that any extra amenities outside the room were conveniently unavailable during our stay (the roof deck was "under construction"...?). I might give them 3 stars, but M really wanted the authentic Southern charm hotel and he was happy with what we got, so I'm rounding up.

A nice hotel right in the heart of Savannah!  It was clean enough and easy walking distance to all of historic Savannah.  The parking is a bit tricky for loading and unloading but if you are a little patient you will be fine.  The rooms are large enough overlooking the water and overall the experience was A-OK!

My husband and I stayed here on our little getaway. I love historic inns because they are so charming. RSI is very quaint and located on River Street with all the local restaurants and bars. It is also facing the Savannah River so def get a room where you can see the river and watch the boats go by. It is located within walking distance to many attractions, restaurants, and shops.

Our room was small and the longer we stayed in it, the more I didn't like it. I didn't think it was very clean. There was a ring around the toilet and the sink didn't look clean either. Also, on the sheets there were some stains. I know they were clean, but just to see them grossed me out. We asked for new sheets and they were nice about it. My husband found some lube in the nightstand drawer so we knew what the previous guests before us did.

They turn your sheets down for you and give you a special treat from a local candy store. I thought the staff was helpful and answered all our questions about where to go. Overall 2.5 stars rounded up to 3. If we were to come to Savannah again, we wouldn't stay here.

A fan I am, Yay!  Yep, there are several places to stay while in Savannah but in my opinion when you visit you want to be somewhere that has some history and also is located centrally.  You will be hard pressed to find a better suitable hotel than River Street Inn, in that case.  Antique furnishings and moderately large rooms would best describe the accommodations.  The service staff is great and yummy local handmade chocolates will be found bedside every night :)  The front desk staff was very gracious and was quick to upgrade if possible.  Smooth checking in and equally as smooth checking out make me a happy camper.  In terms of location this Inn is located directly over Huey's (see my review) and also in the heart of the very active nightlife on River Street.

The rooms are nice but the bathrooms are a little out dated. They also have free wine and cheese from 5-630. Make sure you add $10 a night for parking to the cost of the room. The staff is friendly especially the house keepers. They were very nice. It's a very old hotel and you can easily get lost if your not careful but if you follow the emergency exit sign you'll be ok. I recommend staying there once just to say you did but there are nicer hotels on river street.

Came here for a weekend getaway last Spring on my first trip to Savannah and was very pleased!  A very charming, historical hotel right on the water in the heart of the city.

At check-in I was told that my queen room wasn't available, but the staff were very nice and upgraded me to a King room on the water side, no complaints here!  Staff was also very helpful in finding places to go in the city and where to eat.  After reading a few of the other reviews, maybe I just lucked out and got the one really helpful front desk person?  ;o)

My room was clean and the bed was comfortable, the bathroom was a good size as well.  I didn't have a balcony, but a good-sized window to look out over the water.

As mentioned before, there is a parking garage fairly close to the hotel, I just wound up leaving the car there and walking to everything I wanted to see since the hotel is in such a great spot.  I would definitely stay here again on my next trip to Savannah!

Really fun hotel to stay at. Perfect location. Smack dab in the middle of everything. The rooms, and hotel look very historic. We really enjoyed to complimentary cocktail hour every day for all guests from 500-630. I think more hotels should do that. We will definetly be back.

Catching up on reviews from a trip earlier this year - I've been way behind - and I wanted to share this magical place.  I have a soft spot for historic places, having grown up in an old house, and I wanted to share this.

We arrived fairly late and tired from a long day of driving but the check in process was quick and painless.  The building is arranged in a few stories with a grand central staircase with a somewhat precipitous drop from the upper stories to the basement, but that's part of the charm.  Beautiful hardwood floors throughout, and we were lucky enough to get a room looking out on the river.  On our arrival, there was someone singing down by the river (not a song, but literally singing next to the river) and a large shipping barge going by.  You truly get a sense of being in the middle of a historic shipping thoroughfare that has seen centuries of commerce.  It was a magical moment.

Don't arrive expecting all the amenities, power outlets, technology, and creature comforts of an upscale hotel in Vegas, for example, and you'll be very pleasantly surprised by the charm of this place.  Not to say that there aren't amenities - nice robes, etc. - but you're staying here for the charm, the ambiance, and the history, and a touch of Old Savannah.

I was wavering between 3 and 4 stars, but went with three for one reason:  the staff.  They're atrocious.  Rude, short, acting like they have something better to do.  Just nothing but attitude all the way.  I don't understand how these people got a job working in a customer service industry.

Aside from that, this is actually a pretty decent place to stay.  The rooms are quiet & clean, furnished with antiques, and quite charming.  The location is hard to beat.  And the prices are pretty fair for what you get.

If they fired everyone who worked here and hired an entire new (professional) team to run this place, it would be a solid 4-star establishment.

I am a sucker for historic inns so when I tasked the sig-o with finding us a place to stay in Savannah I was delighted when he found the River Street Inn. It would be a waste to stay in downtown Savannah and not spend the night in one of their historic buildings. The prices were also reasonable and just about everything you could want is within walking distance. Check in was quick and efficient and our room was on the fourth floor which is nice since we didn't have to haul our baggage up or down any stairs.

Our room was very clean and quite charming. I love wingback chairs and four poster beds (the sig-o likes more modern themes). We didn't end up getting a room with hardwood floors but this was ok. I love how they have a nice selection of books in the room that not only tell about the history of the inn but about Savannah in general. You can easily spend a few hours reading before you leave your room. Wireless internet is provided in case you want to bring your laptop to plan your days. The bathroom was clean but nothing extravagant (although the jet tub was nice). I was extremely thankful that the air conditioning in this place was superb considering the very hot and sticky Savannah summers.  You can use one of the many city owned parking garages near the inn (parking averages around $8/day).

Now for the only knock on my experience here. There was an ice machine located outside our room that was perhaps the loudest ice machine I have ever encountered in my life.  If you can imagine the sound of a bleating goat being unwillingly fed into a wood chipper then you can replicate the misery we heard. The second night of our stay I was woken up three separate times by the monstrosity (who the hell needs ice at 3am anyway?). Management either needs to fix this machine or relocate it away from guest rooms. The machine is so infamous I have included a picture of it in the photos section. This place may have approached a five stars (although I still like the Planter's Inn in Charleston better) had it not been for the ice machine. Still overall a beautiful inn with a charming room and a can't miss if you need a place to stay in Savannah.

A National Historic Hotel right in the heart of the historic district of Savannah. The building dates from the early 1800's.

The rooms are spacious and clean with comfortable beds. Ours had an enormous fireplace in it. The balcony overlooked River Street with ferries and boats docked along the Savannah River.

The night life along River Street was filled with music and folks strolling beside the river. Our room felt like a window onto a constantly changing show.  We couldn't have been more in the heart of things if we'd tried.  Right behind  the hotel is Tubby's Tankhouse, Heuy's and Bernie's Oyster Bar.  We were within  walking distance of seafood restaurants, Irish bars and multiple walking ghost tours in the city.

The rooms were a little pricey, but well worth it for the area. I'm sure we even had our own ghosts sharing our room. How many people have slept in those rooms in the last 200 years?  How many cotton deals were made here?  How many lives were changed?

My husband and I stayed in Savannah 6/17-6/19 for a wedding. After reading several reviews, I made my reservations for the River Street Inn.

At first the hotel was difficult to spot from the street, and having never been to Savannah, I was not aware of the parking restrictions (though the hotel staff seemed more than willing to help with that.) The interiors of the hotel were also beautiful and clean. I loved the decor, especially the hard wood floors. Our room on the 5th floor had a lovely view of the city.

However, despite the beauty of it, this hotel only gets 3 stars from me. Each time my husband or I had an issue, we had to bring it up three times for it to be addressed. I'll explain.

The day before we left Louisville, I called the RSI to inquire about the earliest possible check-in time. I was informed that there was no concrete time, and that I should just call when we were in the vicinity and our room would be ready. On the way to Savannah, around 11:45am, I made another call to the RSI to inform them that we would be arriving within the hour. At this point, I was informed that the earliest time we could check in would be 3:00pm because there was a full house. I ask why that wasn't mentioned yesterday, to which the person on the other end responded, 'I don't know.' We arrive at the RSI just before 1:00, and we speak to a young lady at the desk, who again tells us that they can try to get us in earlier, but guarantees no earlier than 3:00. My husband explains our situation a bit (our situation being that we're headed to a wedding in 5 hours) and suddenly, management finds a room available for us. The 3:00 check in time would've never been a problem if I had been informed of it from the get-go.

Secondly, my husband calls down for an ironing board and an iron at 3:30. He asks that it be brought to the room at or before 4:15. At 4:30, still no ironing board. At 5:00, still no ironing board. After his 3rd call, the ironing board was finally brought to the room.

Thirdly, after getting caught in an apocalyptic downpour Saturday evening, I called down Sunday morning to see if some of my still-damp garments could be put in a dryer. No one ever came to pick up my clothes, and after the issues with service, I just used the blow-dryer to dry my clothes since I didn't care to have to call someone three times.

With that being said, the hotel is very nice and has a great location. Despite the issues with service, I would stay here again. However, the next time I'm in Savannah, I would prefer somewhere that provides parking for their patrons.

Stayed here when the boyfriend and I were scoping out places to live before we moved down that summer. Let's just say, this is about as nice as Savannah gets, and we were spoiled. There are fancier hotels (ie: the Mansion) but to be right on River street on the Factor's Walk was amazing. The room was beautiful: gorgeous old wood floors, comfy beds, and the nicest people ever work there!
We're back up in Boston 2 years later, but we still plan on visiting... and staying at the River Street Inn.
One thing though... make sure you request a room ground floor or above. The folks stayed here during a visit once and the lower level rooms are a little less fabulous. Kind of dark and a little dinghy. Stay on the first floor or above though, and you'll be glad that you did

This place was A-MA-ZING.  The guy checking us in was one of the nicest people ever.  He asked if we were there for any special occasion, and we mentioned we were on our honeymoon- so he upgraded us to a riverview queen suite on the top floor.  The room was AWESOME, it had recently been redone, the colors were gorgeous, the bed was awesome, the bathroom was fancy.  Did I mention the top floor can only be reached with certain room-keys in the fancy gold elevator? Niiiice.  The room also had a balcony overlooking the river. Gorgeous.

The turndown service with the chocolates was so cute- and I love free chocolate :D And they wrote a little weather forecast on there too- nice!

There is also a "guest reception" every afternoon, with free drinks and hors d'oeuvres in the downstairs bar area.  It included cheese, crackers, fruit, veggies, shrimp and chicken when we were there.  In that same area, they have a menu from every single area restaurant laid out so you can look around and plan dinner. Very cool!

This is one of the best hotel experiences I've ever had- next time we're in Savannah, I know where we're staying!

Great location for a first time trip to Savannah, right on the river with River Street and its odd collection of tchotchke shops, candy shops, restaurants, and dive bars. On the city side it's adjacent to Bull and Abercorn Streets, with all their parks and historic action.

The hotel itself also has that Savannah charm, being a converted warehouse (as are pretty much all the buildings on River Street). We had a city view room on the 4th floor (due to the big incline between River and Bay Streets, the 4th floor is actually street level on Bay Street, while the 1st floor is street level on River Street - so any rooms below the 4th floor on the city side will be staring at a brick wall...river side rooms don't have that issue, but some of the 3rd floor rooms may be uncomfortably close to the live music of some of the bars/restaurants on River Street).

Our room itself was nice, with plantation shutters, four poster king bed, and more than adequate AC (nice since it was 90+ F and 90%+ relative humidity while we were there). The only knock was our room's proximity to what must be the loudest ice machine in the known world.

Otherwise, totally worth the money. A tip, the hotel itself has no parking, but a city of Savannah parking garage is a block away. You can buy two or single day visitor parking passes that are good at the city garages. The two day pass is almost as much as one day in the garage without it, so I'd snag one of passes instead. The single day pass is worth it too, if you're just staying for one night. See the city of Savannah website for more details on those bad boys.

We booked this hotel on http://Hotels.com, kind of based on what we read on yelp and kind of just on a whim and based on the sale they were having.

All I can say is, if I go back to Savannah, I am staying at this hotel.  You simply can't beat this location.  The lobby (4th floor) walks right onto Bay Street, and into the historical district, the first floor dumps you right in the middle of River Street and all the night life there.  Amazing location, couldn't beat it.  We even could see the fireworks on the river (it was Oktoberfest) right from our room.  Amazing.

The rooms are big but cozy, the bed was incredibly comfortable, and bathroom was clean and had plenty of linens, and the room had bathrobes, both funny and awesome.  I found the staff incredibly helpful, both with directions, watching our luggage, accomodating a late check out, restaurant suggestions, and just getting our loads of luggage down to our room.

There is a rooftop porch as well, but frankly, the view is blocked by some other buildings and isn't really anything special.  It is fenced in, too, so you can't even get to the edge and really see anything.  The setting is romantic, but would be great for a friends get away as well.

Oh, and they hooked us up with a free River view...awesome for our weekend.  If you get to Savannah, this is the hotel.

We checked in around 4:00pm. They encouraged us to attend the wine/snacks at 5:30. So we went in the room, got settled, changed (lookin hot), and had ourselves a loaded glass of champagne.

I'm here with my friend and her son. The location is great! Right on River Street, thus the name. The rooms are gorgeously furnished with more antiquish furniture. We have a nice canopy bed. . .  (Better if I were here on a romantic getaway, but even so...)

I am definitely coming back with a guy.

I gave the place a 4 out of 5 because they could be a little more customer service oriented, two girls and a baby checking into a queen bedroom ... C'mon, at least offer the option of  a double bed room??

I picked this hotel based on Yelp reviews - thanks guys! I spent a total of 4 nights here (was supposed to be 3 but my flights got cancelled). The hotel itself is perfectly located - its on the Savannah river, backs up to the river walk area. I really liked the style, it wasn't like a major chain rent-a-box.

The first three nights I spent in a room on the street side, 4th floor. It was super quiet and very comfortable. I think I paid around $125 a night. The 4th night I had a room on the river side. That was especially cool as the huge container ships sail down the river in the evening and you can watch them go by.

Another bonus - you get two chocolate "gophers" from the Savannah Candy Co. placed on your bed every day. I had to visit the place just to buy more candy. Yum!

I've visited Savannah several times and almost always stay at this hotel. When I haven't, I've felt regret.

It is so charming, has a bed and breakfast feel, and is in a fantastic location. On one side is the river, where all of the night action is and the other side leads you to the historical part of Savannah.

The hotel holds a nightly wine and cheese happy hour and the staff is very friendly and accommodating. I'd recommend this for a trip with that special someone or even a girfriend's getaway - perfect for either!

Can't give this a 3 star because I wouldn't go back to this hotel.  Giving you the good details first:  Very charming and great proximity to everything in the historic part of Savannah.  Once we parked our vehicle we never saw it again until the day we left as this is a walking town and that's what we did.  Being located on the 5th floor felt very safe since in order to take the elevator to the 5th floor, one has to use the room key to get up there.  We were also on the riverside with a great view of the action on the river and down below on River Street, with a balcony which I will comment on below.
Bathroom was very clean, roomy, and decorated to perfection with warm colors and plenty of towels, and a shower head that sprayed as you would want from your own at home.
Beautiful dark hardwood flooring in the room with a fireplace for decoration.  The room was also decorated with antique furniture making it quite homey.  The AC was more than substantial, keeping up with the unseasonably warm temps.
Price wise, we got a pretty good deal because we purchased the "Just the Two of Us" deal and added a few more nights to it, bringing the price down a bit from the norm for the extra nights.
    Now for the cons:
As said by others previously, employees were nice to a point but yet  quite sarcastic in how they spoke to us and too quick in how parking was explained and taking us to our room.  Felt quite rushed yet there were no other customers waiting when we were being taken up to the room.  With the parking thing, we were told to go left out of the temporary parking, impossible due to the amount of traffic.  The parking garage was a couple of blocks away off of 1 way roads taking it double the time to park then it would have had the explanation bee more clear or even written out for us and other customers.  We were also not given a card or some sort of pass for parking, allowing a deal for the hotel stay, as we learned later when we were leaving, because when asked about the cost, a card or something was quickly shown to us along with another sarcastic comment not understood.  Parking was $11.00 per day, not the $8.00 advertised.  It's also prorated on partial days.  The cost from parking from Tuesday at 4pm to Saturday at 11am was $48.00, twice as much as we thought.
My reservation was for a deluxe King.  I don't even think it was a queen but yet a double bed.  Very uncomfortable too!  When I read about the comfort of the bed before going there I thought it would be great.  No better than a cheap hotel.  Next time I stay at any hotel, before I go to the room I will make sure it is a King room.  It was our 10th Anniversary if that says anything.
The room smelled......really bad.  It was musty like an old beach house which would have been fine at the beach but not in our location.  Even though the bathroom was clean, the floors under the bed and furniture were not so.  One morning after coming back and after the maid had cleaned, there was a dirty, dusty, nasty men's sock placed on one of the chairs as if it were ours.  The maid didn't know it wasn't but "yuck!" anyway.
The balcony was plain scary!  Not a problem that it was a French balcony being 3ft by 4ft.  It just didn't seem safe!  If you go, don't let your kids out on it!  You can't see how secure it is from the bottom side but as for the rail connected into the brick by the door, once side was not secure enough to be safe.  Looked like it was coming out of the brick.  And when I did go out on it, I felt a strange feeling to go back into the room and did.
With the package we were also to have a Private horse and carriage ride.  The ticket said to take down to the carriage loading at the Hyatt for a ride.  When showing the check in person the ticket she said it was for a general public ride and that this usually wasn't done for the hotels.  We told her we wanted the private ride but was told the ticket was not for that.  Okay, back to the hotel.  When I explained the situation, we were told that someone was supposed to tell us to line up the private ride ahead of time because a reservation was needed for the private coach; sarcastically explained to us again like we were the idiots.  Okay, how am I supposed to know this on my own?  I read the ticket and followed instructions.  Once again this was for our anniversary and I wanted the ride on that day.  We did luck out in that we were able to get a carriage at 10pm for a night ride which was plenty of time away from our dinner reservation time.  So all in all that did work out by why the issues with everything and the sarcastic attitudes?  The people here really need to be more welcoming, which would make for a much more pleasant stay.
In that, we have already decided that we will try a competing hotel on River Street next time.  I would love to stay here again if my reservations were correct, King bed included, and not being talked down to with sarcastic attitudes.

Beautiful historic hotel.  It is located overlooking River Street.  The view is lovely.  The beds here are quite comfortable too.  Rooms are decorated nicely and offer a charming touch.

The staff here is friendly and accommodating.

I will be sure to go back next time I am in Savannah!

This hotel, near the historic Cotton Exchange, a commerce center dating back to 1887.  It certainly holds its fair share of southern charm, along with a hefty dose of gothic southern creepiness.
My room was large and comfy, but also held a slight resemblance to the room that holds John Cusak hostage in "1408." The portrait of the anonymous plantation owner hanging ominously over the four-poster bed was a nice touch. His eyes followed me all Disneyland Haunted Mansion-style. Spooky...
The hotel offers an evening social hour with free wine, which I didn't get a chance to try. It also has a pool table in the lounge, which I also did not try.
One night I decided to take a self-guided tour of the building looking for the roof-top patio. I ended up, through a number of twists and turns, on the uninhabited fifth floor. I think these rooms were at one time offices for the gentlemen doing business at the Cotton Exchange. The floor definitely had the feel of yesteryear, and the unnerving silence to go with it. I made the skeedadle to the rooftop patio door, only to find myself outdoors all by my lonesome. I had propped the door open behind me, but have to admit, I lost all nerve when I looked back and saw it slowly closing on its own. Was it a ghost trying to lock me out of the building to freeze to death outside, unbeknownst to the hotel staff? My overactive imagination got the best of me and I high-tailed it back inside, skittering my way to the elevator and back down to the lobby, where I strolled out trying to act all cool and casual.
Aside from all the spooky stuff, the staff here was super helpful and gracious, and each night I received free turn-down service and chocolates on my pillow. If you stay here, know that river-view rooms on the 3rd floor can get noisy. My room apparently was right over a bar with nightly karaoke. Folks singing there really seem to love the Doobie Brothers. I got to hear a rendition of  "Long Train Runnin'" pretty much every night. That was really the only downside. But now that I think of it, maybe it was that ghost's way of trying to get me the hell outa there again...

One of the best hotels I've stayed at.  The location was perfect.   Nice little touches such as free wine every night and chocolates on the pillows.  The building itself looks great.  Highly recommended.

A friend and I stayed here after visiting some old friends at Southern. It is such an amazing hotel. Right on the river, clean rooms, and its HISTORIC, which is great to add to that down-south charm. Don't be surprised if you see a ghost roaming the halls :) The staff was nice and friendly and the hotel overall was just beautiful. Plus, you can walk to any of the places on riverstreet, and it wasn't too unresonably priced.

Awesome stay in this river facing charming inn.  Service was very friendly and rooms were appropriate and clean.  The location can't be beat, and it is nice to stay in an authentic inn vs. the larger chains in the area.  Parking is terrible of course, but the room is highly recommended if staying in this part of Savannah.
