You know - I'll be honest. I almost didn't want to write about this place because I loved it so much.

My friend and I went on a Thursday night with our sights set on human-sized Jenga....five hours, lotsa beers and one successful game of Jenga later, I was hooked.

It's the perfect size - two dollar domestic drafts on Thurs nights...free popcorn...and frozen 'za for like four bucks when you realize how much of an appetite you work up after an intense game of Jenga!

Kinda small but in a good way, all old wood, classic style bar.  The staff is great, very very nice and always there when you need a drink.  As alluded to in many posts, Human sizedJenga is awesome although when it falls you may flinch as it can only be likened to a thunderclap in a phone booth.  Will come again anytime before a concert or if in the area.

We ended up here to watch the bball game this past weekend after everything else was packed.  It worked out well - was pretty dead until after the game ended.  Service was good until our server left...which prompted us to leave.  Wish they had food.

I have a dog, but still thought it was weird having dogs there.  They were eating the peanut shells on the floor, probably not the healthiest.  And a few people weren't really watching their dogs.  Big pet peeve for me.  ha, pet peeve.

I would go back if I happened to be in the neighborhood and was in need of a 312, stat.  Otherwise, probably not.

We went here after flugtag last Saturday, because the doorguy/barback (who was busting his ASS - someone give that man a raise!) told us there was free food.

And there was! And there was a big screen full of college football. And they let dogs in the bar and hand out hot dogs and popcorn and peanuts and pizza.

However, they don't have a computerized order system. The bartender keeps all the tabs written down, and due to that, it may take you a minute to get whatever you ordered. Just a head's up.

But seriously - give that doorguy/barback a raise. He totally deserves it.

Thank you, Stacey A. for reminding me what this place was called!  I had forgotten, probably due to a spontaneous waffle/mimosa breakfast topped off by whatever beer I threw down my gullet at River Shannon.

So here's why I want to hug River Shannon: free food.  They say nothing in life is free, but that's crap, because I ate two hot dogs, and probably a pound of popcorn and shelled peanuts and didn't pay a cent.

They had good TVs for football and were nice about us wanting to change one of them to display a game we'd been watching before switching tables.  I don't recall drinks being very expensive either, but I don't remember much.

I knocked a star off because they have an order minimum for using credit or debit.  I'm sorry, if I want to be a frivolous dork and pay for just one or two drinks on my card, I think I should have the right to do so without having to buy four drinks just to bump it up to the minimum.  Pain in the butt.  But otherwise, this place rocked hard and I ate well for free.

Oh yeah and a girl had a doggy in there.  Nobody cared.  Do you think they'll let me bring my pet komodo dragon?

When I used to walk dogs back in college, this was my hot spot. They used to let me bring in my puppies while I ordered a few pints.

Hey, my routes were easy....what else was I gonna do??

river shannon is a completely safe bet.  bartenders are friendly, drinks are priced reasonably, there are a ton of games (including giant jenga, woah!), and they're dog friendly.  it's clean, comfortable, and unpretentious.

you know those places were you find yourself chatting and drinking and then you look down at your watch and it's been 3 hours versus the 30 minutes you thought? it's one of those places. it's easy to get cozy here.

Any bar that I can bring my dog to is a winner in my book.

Came here for a long Sunday Funday of football and booze with some friends and our dogs.  The bartender was sweet and kept the drinks coming and the conversation going smoothly all afternoon.  AND they have free peanuts, popcorn and a whole FREE HOT DOG STAND set up.  Can't beat a free hot dog with all the fixins after an afternoon of drinking and watching the Bears lose.  I will definitely be back here more often!

How this place has so many stars is truly a mystery.  Someone is getting free drinks -- and it's not me!

That's the only way this hole could have four stars.

It falls so short of expectations.  This should be a 1) Friendly Neighborhood pub.  2) The employees should be nice.

The bartenders here couldn't be more rude and obnoxious, not to mention they seem out of it.

After tipping $2 for a bud light I was actually cornered and told that I needed to start tipping.  When I replied that I did tip the first time and not the second due to rude service  I was told to leave and my drinks were pourd into the sink.

Gee Thanks Neighbor!

This place also smells horribly from the cleaner they use.

The River Shannon was so great in 2001 and 2002, but since late 2002 this place has started a down hill trend that is seemingly never ending.

Go somewhere else.  Four Farthings, Stanley's, Sedgwick's and Marquee are far better options.

This place was great.  Very small with a lot of beers on tap... popcorn for free in the corner and free hot dogs other times.  The bartender was cool.  It's an old dark place that really feels like a laid back pub.  A big group of friends and I say in the back for hours on end, we all loved it... was the perfect place to relax and talk.  It's not your loud, obnoxious, DJ-blaring place, so stay away if you're looking for that.

I have been to River Shannon at least 5 times and never been disappointed.  The bar is old fashioned and looks like an old Brunswick bar from the early 20th century.  Beyond the old fashioned wooden bar and bar back the place has a tin ceiling and big white glass domes over the lights.  The ambiance and the corner storefront location is like stepping back to an earlier less "yuppified" time in Chicago.

River Shannon is a neighborhood bar in the sense that its patrons are a reflection of the neighborhood residents.  This is not like the places on Lincoln Avenue where kids from Schaumburg get wasted and try to hook up.  River Shannon on any given night has a good mix of drunks, old timers, post college kids and so on.

They often have a guitar player

On the down side this is not the cheapest place nor does it have the best selection of anything(food, beer, liquor).

If you are looking to avoid the Gamekeepers/Sedgwicks Frat boy crowd and the Stanley's crowd River Shannon is your answer.

I've had some great times at this place... usually going to celebrate another LSU victory after watching a game at Gamekeepers down the way. The place is relatively cozy with a good amount of seating and the service has always been cool and friendly. I'd been going here for a couple of years before a waitress offered us menus once... I had absolutely no idea the place served food! I never ate there, but catalogued that away in my memory just in case.

A great bar in a great location.  The best option if you are in the Lincoln/Armitage area.  The other bars that are close tend to be too crowded.  The bartenders are friendly and the regulars are quite hilarious.  Check it out if you are in the neighborhood.

This is one of my favorite spots in the city!  Its a neighborhood place where all of the bartenders and waitresses know your name and your drink.  They have peanuts and popcorn to munch on.  You can even bring dog in there.  I love this place!

It's cool for having some beers and hanging out. Not really my scene but, again, it was a blast for St. Patty's day. drunks everywhere. Shots. People staggering, women dressed like hookers, guys with khaki shorts and flip flops. good times.

i don't remember much about this place. only that I had 4 shots of tullamore dew whiskey (among many other shots) and almost yacked at the bar the night before new years eve.

oh, the bouncer really liked my friend. he kept poking her dots on her shirt and calling her baby girl. we asked him if he wanted to take a shot with us...he asked for a shot of bacardi.

Another mediocre bar...nothing too special, but it doesn't really have any negatives either.  They have some good specials at times.  A nice alternative to gamekeepers.
