I can't speak highly enough of Nancy and Ami. They were amazing prenatally and helped turn my nightmare preecclampsia induction labor in the hospital at 37 weeks into a wonderful experience with their knowledge and support. (Michelle Welborn, who now has her own practice, gets big ups too.) They are that perfect blend of practical, knowledgeable and nurturing. They are big fans of science and hospitals when necessary, which was perfect for us, but I'm sure they can go hippie with the best of them, too.
We still keep in touch and I will love them forever! They will be the second to hear the news after my husband if we have another kid :-)
There are so many great things to say about Nancy and Michelle. They have helped to both support and educate us in all aspects of prenatal and postpartum care with their special brand of calm, nurturing attention. We are forever grateful for their ability to help us to have a natural, beautiful home birth. In turn, we have been able to share some what we've learned with others, helping to spread the word about how wonderful home births can be.
Reviewing Rites of Passage and its team -- Nancy Myrick, Michelle Welborn and Ami Burnham -- is like reviewing your best friends. It's so hard to be objective. We had a wonderful home birth with Nancy and Michelle, after months spent in prenatal sessions getting to know them. Their care is loving, sensible and well-informed, and they leave most of the medical decisions up to you. After our daughter was born, Ami literally saved our asses when we were having one lactation challenge after another. The only bad thing about these ladies is that after your baby's six-week "birthday," the midwives stop coming to see you and you have to say goodbye!
Nancy is a wonderful midwife and she attended the birth of our son Kula on November 15th along with Abigail Reagan. Thanks partly to Nancy, my Fiancee Amy and I were able to be more comfortable and confidant in the birth process and she did a wonderful job giving us support physically and mentally. Having someone you really trust and feel at ease with was crucial to our birth plan and Nancy helped keep us calm and asses all the scenarios in our Labor process.
If you are considering Home Birth or have any questions, Nancy is a wonderful resource and wealth of information on the subject. Before our son's birth, we attended a great potluck with her former clients who gave us their own personal insights and first hand experiences with Home Birthing which gave us a much better understanding of what we were getting ourselves into and confirming that this was the right path for us.
Nancy Myrick of Rites of Passage was recommended to me by a couple different folks. After interviewing a number of midwives, I had no doubt that Rites of Passage was the right practice for me. Nancy and Ami (Ami Burnham, the other midwife in the practice) are great. Just great. Prenatal was smooth sailing. Any questions I had, they were answered without judgement. And the midwives offered lots of their own books and videos for us to reference as well. A classy practice all around. Knowledgable, skilled, and personable. I definitely recommend!!!!!!! Homebirth for sure. Rites of Passage Midwifery for sure. They are pro-nature without getting to that new-agey place that puts me off. They are science-knowledgeable without being all quadratic equation about your birth.
We had both children at home, with different midwifery practices. While we have no complaints about the first, Nancy and her team bring an entirely higher level of service, availability and follow up. She's available via email, text and cell at all hours, provides amazing ante and post natal care and is rigorous about including medical doctors as needed to insure your own health care and that of your child. There is no need to fear a home birth will be less medically sound than a hospital birth with her training, experience and practice. On top of that, she's well known in the UCSF medical community, specifically obstetrics practice, so you'll find the staff there to be respectful of her authority and supportive of your choice to home birth.
I have used Rites of Passage Midwifery for the births of both my children, and I couldn't be happier with the level of support, caring, and care I have gotten from Nancy Myrick, Ami Burnham, and Chanti Smith. They come to your house for every pre-natal visit and spend an hour or more with you, talking about whatever you need talking about and doing thorough examinations. With your first child, they have group pre-natals for those that are due around the same time as you, and 3.5 years later, some of those people are my closest parent friends. Nancy is down-to-earth, very knowledgable, and extremely loving. Ami is an amazing lactation consultant, in addition to being a midwife. Chanti has extensive training in alternative healing modalities and is a solid, caring midwife.
As Ye Olde Saw goes, I would give Nancy Myrick and Rites of Passage Midwifery a hundred stars if I could. Nancy is our midwife, with Michelle Wellborn, and she delivered our son beautifully, calmly and gently this past month. She has been an amazing healthcare provider for me and for our babe. She visits us at home and continues to be a valuable source of information and assurance to us. All of our prenatal and post partum visits have been easy and comfortable-- in our living room!-- and Nancy is always available and willing to answer questions by phone and email. She actively includes my husband in every decision and conversation-- something we don't get from our other natal care providers, though we should, being that he's half of our parenting team. Perhaps most crucial to us, Nancy isn't a staunch and inflexible homebirth advocate. Though we planned a homebirth and homebirths are her specialty, Nancy is also a CNM who knows how to navigate the hospital system and will insist on a hospital delivery when medically necessary. In our case it was medically necessary, but with Nancy and Michelle there to facilitate the process, we had an incredibly easy, beautiful and minimally- medicalized birth at UCSF. So easy and beautiful, in fact, that I am already forgetting that my husband and I vowed that one kid was enough and we would never go through pregnancy again.
We had our 2 sons at home with Nancy Myrick and Ami Burhnam. Their pre-natal care is amazing, with all visits occurring in our home. They take as much time as you need to cover the issues that arise during your pregnancy. Their presence and attention during labor and delivery made our births a personal, strong, confident, safe, nurtured experience. I wish I was having more kids so that I could spend time with them again!
