My favorite sit-down coffee in the valley. A fair selection of quality pastries, breakfast snacks and light lunch fair.
I've had a bad brew there only once (and quite some time ago), where I did not get the impression the Batista could do better. The new location, though classic cozy, doesn't seem to have as much available seating... but I still love this place. Very good espresso.
My regular Sunday morning haunt with the kids. -

I decided to try Ristretto on a sleepy sunday morning, To lazy to get in my car and drive to a drive thru or coffee giant I slipped on my flip flops and hoofed it the few short blocks to this neighborhood shop. I was most certainly not disappointed! The coffee was fantastic! The ambiance was charming and I will most definitely be back.
My only complaint was the music was a bit loud and the barista a little too somber. Don 't let that deter you though, definitely check this place out! -

Didn't try the coffee but loved the service. Barista was friendly but not too chatty and offered more hot water for my tea.
Decor is nice and the place is clean.
Oh, and tons of options for espresso drinks. There were lots I would have wanted to try if I hadn't been off coffee for the day. -

This was a great little find! I totally wasn't expecting a place like this in a little town like Mount Vernon. I had a grilled cheese sandwich and glass of pinot gris. The sandwich was a little heavy on the pesto and parmesan but pretty good. The wine was a little flat, but the woman working offered to pour me another glass if I wanted since this was just the bottom of their last bottle of the pinot gris.
Mostly what I loved about this place was the atmosphere. It feels way more like a place you might find in Pioneer Square in Seattle than a little town an hour to the north. If I'm every passing through and need a place to stop I'll definitely come back here! -

This may be the prettiest & coziest coffeehouse in old Mount Vernon. They offer interesting pastries, they serve wine, & will be organizing pairings & other events as time goes on. They have extended hours which I think officially makes them they only coffeehouse game in town for evenings.
Most of the seating is for 2 so if you're a onesie at a table please consider sharing the other chair with another. Electrical outlets seem ample for computer users. There's one shared co-ed restroom so please be neat & wipe the seat & all that good stuff (you know the drill, right?). -

Ristretto is celebrating the grand opening at their new location on May 21st! The previous owner said it would happen, and Ristretto fans have waited a long time for the good news.
Hands down, the best coffee you'll drink in the Valley. The ambiance at their other location was great - lots of seating, fireplace, local art made it an inviting place to hang out. Being someone who likes the personality of those old brick buildings downtown, I'm excited to see what they've done with the new place.
Things may be different now, but the one drawback at Ristretto was that you absolutely could *not* go there if you were looking for coffee on the run; fast they aren't (or, at least, weren't). If you have time to relax and wait, though, this is the coffee you're looking for.
UPDATE: From a 5- to a 2-star in one fell swoop! My first visit to Ristretto's new location, a couple of months after they opened, was a MAJOR disappointment. The baristas seemed (far) less than happy to serve us, and failed to follow up at all after they had (although we were their only patrons). Strangest of all, one of the baristas drew a blank look when I talked about their former location, as if she didn't know it ever existed. Awkward moment! Mom and I had yummy sammies and some barely reasonable java and called it a day.
This was not the Ristretto I knew and loved. We've since moved south... maybe one day I'll pop in and give them another shot. -

First off: you should know that I'm a coffee snob. This place has good-quality coffee, although my wet soy cappuccino WAS a *little* on the dry side, for those of you that are as picky as me. I haven't tried their wines yet. I love the atmosphere; it's what a coffee shop should be: ambient lighting, quiet, cozy. Went there for some free local music. Their sound system either sucked or the lady mumbled when she sang. I don't blame this on Ristretto-- you can't have perfect artists every time. They stay open late-ish (8pm weekdays). It's a cool Mount Vernon hangout.

Ristretto has reopened in downtown Mount Vernon and I'm rather fond of it. They did some beautiful work with the interior of the space, which seems very "Portland" to me. They make great espresso drinks but I've become fond of the 'pour over bar,' where you can choose your beans and they make a cup of drip to order for you, rather than having giant urns sitting around getting stale like many places do.
They also have really delicious cinnamon rolls, cookies, and scones. I like their paninis but I find them to be a bit too oily to eat often. I have one maybe once a month or so.
The people are really friendly; they made an effort to remember my name and what I like to order. -

Mount Vernon isn't exactly known for it's gourmet coffeehouses but finally, one of the finest pedigree arrives. They serve the finest vivace coffee, and excuisite pastries and sandwiches. Best of all, the service is excellent and the owner is usually working, a nice touch. Last summer, this place opened in a different location and shut down. I was devestated! I'm so happy they've reopened, in a better downtown location. Ristretto is definitely worth a try!

real espresso comes to skagit valley!
update #1: well, my first two visits were great - excellent tasting espresso - my third visit not so much - basically dirt.
stay tuned..
update #2:
so far, out of 7 americanos
3 excellent (not quite Vivace, but close)
2 so-so
2 horrible
seems to be a vast difference one barista to another -

Wish we had known sooner that Ristretto re-opened under new ownership or we would have stopped in much earlier!. Love the new place! Awesome Coffee and Service! Will get my Abuelita on a regular basis again and spread the word, yay!
