I LOVE this place. I am so sad I don't live on 15th anymore..
Sometimes you have to dig through the half rotting produce with flies buzzing around, but its SUPER cheap and they have great specials. I walk away from this place with three bags stuffed full of produce and its under 20 bucks. They also have eggs, cheese, milk, bread, nuts, and dried fruit.
CASH only.
Sometimes staffed by cute boys with lip rings.

Minus 1 star because they only accept check or cash, and when you buy by the pound, it is hard to judge how much the final bill will be.

But this place still gets five stars from me because usually the final cost is low because of their low prices.  Their produce isn't of the highest quality or checked 7 time.  The apples are stashed in huge wooden crates, and the zukes are piled high in the back.  They keep down overhead with a natural concrete floor and everything is out in the open.

Eat green, be green.  And don't pay with a bad check, or you will end up posted on the wall of shame.

Also, at the end of the summer they close for one week so all their employees can go on vacation.

So there is a place you can get decent fruit and vegetables away from the "farmers market" extortion prices.

I was out and about, saw this place, and swooped in for a huge bag of loot fruit for $7.

It may be a kind of scratch and dent for fruit, but it's all way better and cheaper than what you may find in stores.

Good food for cheap.  Its not always pretty, but its worth it for the price.  I don't know of any other place that I could pick up two peppers, an onion, a yam, a bunch of celery, and a bit of ginger for $3.50!  Has a cool open air market/local neighborhoody feeling.

This is where I get my condensed milk. For less than a dollar I can make my dream desserts thanks to this grocery store. I never spend more than $10 here. It's really cheap.  I also get my vegetables here when I get  a chance to. Chayote, basil, cilantro, bean sprouts. Or canned qail eggs and canned jack fruit. Come here if you will be making a Asian style meal and you need all the fixins without spending a ton in the major grocery store.

Love this place for their Christmas trees. That's about it. I'm too poor to buy their produce (I find that the supermarket gross produce is cheaper but....) but I imagine it's yummy and fresh. I always oooh and aaah when I drive by the fruits and vegetable stands. Everything is always so colorful looking. Sometimes I'd pick up a peach and some juice back in the good ol' days when I went to Roosevelt HS.  And this is where I stop talking about the good ol' days. Nobody wants to hear about it.

I really miss the days of the neighbourhood fruit shop -- I don't know if you ever had them in this country, but in Aus there was always a fruit shop. Normally run by Greek or Italians, these places had all the standard fruit and veg, but also had oodles of exotic fruits and vegetables (oooh, plantains...wow, fresh olives!) Gone are the days where people would get their meat at a butcher, their groceries at a supermarket and their fruit and veg at the fruit shop.

Rising Sun is the closest I've seen to these old style fruit places since Safeway and QFC went all out to stock everything you could ever need.  It's got great prices and I love to see all of the produce on display. Plus at Christmas you can get a great tree from this place too -- not a Chubby and Tubby $15 tree, mind, but a real quality one.

I guarantee once you taste the produce at a real fruit market, you'll never want to go back to supermarket, not even Whole Foods.

I don't know what Cami is talking about... if you look at the prices at this amazing fruit stand.. you'll see that you can't beat the price at any supermarket! 50 cents per pound for apples is something that I've NEVER seen at any supermarket!

The produce may not be as pretty as QFC, but if you sort through the bruised apples and not mind that they aren't waxed and polished to perfection, this place is wonderful.

The fruit does taste better and why not support local farmers.

Who can resist the huge colorful pyramids of fruit that stand out front of this lovely produce market in the Roosevelt area?  Spring is truely  here when Rising Sun Farms opens its wooden slats and sets out the fresh stuff we've been longing for.

I love shopping at Rising Sun Farms.  Everytime I go there I wonder why I would spend twice as much at QFC, or even Safeway, to get the same good produce.   RSF beats supermarket prices by as much as 50%.  They have a great selection of seasonal fruits and vegetables, including "exotic" and speciality foods like mangos, kiwis, startfruit, heirloom tomatoes, and a variety of apples, pears, and plums.  Some items are locally grown, which makes me feel good because I know I am supporting local farmers.  And supporting local business!

By the checkout counter there are organic breads, soy treats, and great chips.

The only drawback I notice to shopping at this great little produce stand is that occasionally sale items or really cheap items are ripe and need to be eaten within a few days.  However, the quality of the produce is consistantly high and sometimes better than what I find at the grocery store.

Rising Sun Farms is Great!

I don't always wake up in time for most Farmers' Markets, but I can always get market quality stuff at Rising Sun on a Sunday afternoon at low prices. Haas avocados for 75 cents. Find that at a grocery store. It's a shack. It has strawberries painted on it. Big ones. It has old wooden bins stuffed with quality stuff. It has a good selection. It's like a larger version of  roadside fruit stands, but in the city. I'ts independent. You should shop here.
