Don't try to plug in "Rio Del Mar" into your GPS, it will probably lead you to the golf course. Instead, take highway 1 and exit off of Rio Del Mar, then follow the road all the way down to the beach.
This beach is pretty nice since it has many picnic tables and bbq areas. And it allows our four legged friends to come along.
This beach was the site of my birthday beach bon fire/party. We rented a house and this beach had so much to offer. We saw dolphins, chill people, wonderful weather and a great bon fire to be had. This beach was the tits.

There's something about living close to the beach that makes me smile. Fortunately, my parents live about a mile from here.
I am at this beach every week, people watching, doggies playing, and soaking up some vitamin D. If I'm feeling adventurous, I'll even take my boogie board out and brave the cold water without a wet suit. Buurrrrr. I don't care, I am a crazy mofo.
So many fond memories are made here. This beach replenishes my spirits.
Ladies, beware of the young high school boys here, they are trouble ;-P. If only they knew how old I really am. Muhaha!

Allows dogs!!!
On the hunt for a dog-friendly beach over near Santa Cruz but outside of the 'hectic' areas like Capitola and Santa Cruz central....this was the perfect find for us. No traffic, all kinds of good.
Off Hwy 1 take Rio Del Mar exit and follow the road all the way down to the beach...there is plenty of free parking, bathrooms, outdoor showers to help wash off your pup, a mile long stretch of shell-laden beach and an old cemented freighter at the end of a short pier that makes for great pictures.
The only thing this beach is lacking is a good on-the-water dog-friendly restaurant serving up fresh fishly grub, but we found a fabulous place in Soquel around the corner which I will write about as well!

We have been coming to Rio Del Mar Beach since I was a kid. A family friend owns a home on Beach Drive, so obviously any chance we get to stay there, we jump on it. The beach itself is very nice. It goes on forever, has pretty nice white sand and is clean of trash for the most part. It can get very crowded during the height of summer and parking is basically nonexistent near Beach Drive, but aside from that it's a great beach for the family. A lot of people play volleyball, throw a football around, skim board and in some spots, the waves are decent enough for a beginner to boogie or body board.
