6 reviews for Rio Bonito
Rio Bonito is a grocery with a restaurant at the back. If you want a good, inexpensive place to eat steak, this is it! You know that Brazilians know how to grill meat, so there you go. They used to have a buffet with different dishes every day but they've done away with it and instead now offer about ten (10) choices they cook as ordered. It's a great deal but if you want a better one, just find Brazilian friends who'll invite you to their barbecues.
Oh, they also sell Havanaias and those Brazilian sausages my friends swear by.

Rio Bonito has moved to the corner of 36 Ave and 33rd Street. Its a supermarket and a coffee shop, with many Brazilian products.
It is not difficult to find Rio Bonito, a massive ugly building painted green and yellow to mimic the flag of Brazil. The market is filled with many products imported from the country, but there is also a small little steam table restaurant in the back that serves hot and cold Brazilian food for lunch and dinner. The plates mostly were $7.99, and there were about 6-8 options. I picked up a pao de queijo ($1.50, cheese bread) which was delicious and moist inside with non-greasy cheese, while retaining an entirely crispy crust.

First: The Acai berry is a scam as to helping to lose your belly. If you go to Oprah and Rachael Ray they will tell you they are not authorized to use their names in ads, due to their claims are not true.
2nd. I shipped a box from this store on Nov.05,2008 to arrive in Salvador brasil in 90 days. As of this date it is not here and no one seems to be able to tell me where it is.

A bit dingey, but a fun little market. I get frozen acai here for smoothies (Well, they're not that smooth. I don't have a blender so I stab the frozen block with a knife and shake it around with some water. It's good, really.).
They have these frozen bacalao croquetas which are delicious and easily fried up at home.
I once bought a slab of cured mystery meat. They told me it was shark. But it was beef - the kind used in a feijoada. Shark?
There's a popped corn snack that's a little sweet and very light and different from our popped corn.
And finally, they have all of these rich dessert toppings made from coconut and maracuja and pineapple and dulce de leche.
Very little english is spoken here. Portuguese all around - by staff and customers alike. I mean, it sure didn't look like shark.

Rio Bonito is a great place if you like Brazilian food. It is not a restaurant, but a supermarket (Brazilian style). There is no "shark" meat for sale there. However, you can buy "Charque" which in Portuguese sounds "shark". Charque is a beef marinated on salt and used for traditional Brazilian food like the "feijoada" and other typical dishes from the South of Brazil.
