Bar/Cafe?! Yes. Inside a salon? Yes.

This review is strictly for the bar/cafe inside Rik Rak. This small cafe offers wine, beer, cocktails, sandwiches, etc. It's a great place to step in and grab some coffee or a snack. I'd opt to sneak in here with friends and catch up.

If you live in Brickell, consider this a good place for weekend morning coffees.

Let it be known that my love affair with Rik Rak only goes so far as the eyebrow threading.

Overall, this is a trendy, hectic and overpriced high-end "multi-salon".

Upon entering, there is a boutique conveniently located to the right where you can peruse shoes, dresses, jewelry etc. However, all stations are in one giant open room for all to see and can be a bit unnerving, making them seem a little disorganized (there's clearly not enough space). Oh, FYI - there is parking for Rik Rak customers up the ramp on the side.

Someone else mentioned that they arrived early/on time for their appointment and had to wait around. I, too, had the same issue. My appointment was for 6:30pm and I don't actually think I got through until an hour and a half later? Perhaps even longer but I was okay with it because I decided to stuff my face instead. One good thing about this place is the bar. A BAR INSIDE A SALON. Come on, that's a fantastic idea! Not only can you get a drink while waiting for your very, very late appointment but you can eat also! They offer breakfast items all day (hell yes!), snacks (yogurt, fruit, couscous stuff with crackers etc) as well as sandwiches and salads and the like. Prices there aren't too bad either.

The lady that did my manicure was not very friendly (probably due to the language barrier as she seemed to only speak Spanish) but I definitely loved the hot towel part. Ah, so nice. The Manicure itself was good, I love the color and for some reason it lasts a good while (two reason for my return).

I've never had my eyebrows threaded and decided to give it a shot. Now, I will probably never go back to waxing. My advice: if you're thinking about it - you need to come to Rik Rak. The resident threader is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. Absolutely, a nut case but she's seriously the best and is the type of person that will analyze and work with the eyebrows you have to completely re-invent your face.

It's a little weird at first, especially if you're anything like me, you walked in thinking your eyebrows just needed cleaning up. Wrong...apparently! During the whole process, she'll make you feel comfortable by talking to you and showing you what she would like to accomplish. Don't be in any haste to get out of there though as perfection is her key and she takes her time. Very pricey ($45) but I think it's worth it, at least until you've been reshaped.

Btw, I saw a drop-dead gorgeous thick-eyebrowed male model walk out of her studio that day. Apparently not only does she work on models but this particular guy was doing a shoot and needed ALL of his hair removed...face, body, legs, you name it. Hence the reason she was late for my appointment. Judging by the thickness of his eyebrows (after having it completed), I could tell that was no easy task. Hairrrryyyy!

Shoulda, coulda, woulda.

Shoulda: read the other yelp reviews and BELIEVED them.

Coulda: fled for my life when, after wandering aimlessly around the store for 15 minutes (note: I was on time for my appointment), they told me that my stylist, who I would have been seeing for the first time, was delayed.  Instead, Mr. Snooty-Mincey-Attitude Guy proposes that I simply see another stylist, whose praises he sang.   At that point I was so tired of my shaggy grown-out mane that I just agreed.

Side note: I have a very idiosyncratic cut that in a way defines me.  I know that might sound weird to some people, but it works for millions of Frenchwomen...and besides, I know what's right for my face because I've lived with it for a fairly long time.

Woulda:  had I just said "no, thanks" and read the reviews, AND realized that my hairdresser was not really listening to a FREAKING WORD I SAID EVEN AFTER I MADE IT PERFECTLY CLEAR in a polite and ladylike way what I wanted and what I didn't want.  I even pointed to a woman and whispered: "See that rich-Coconut-Grove lady stiff little bob?  I don't want that.  And see this long swoop of white-blonde hair that comes down to my collarbone and provides me with a pleasing assymetry and a nice "oomph" against my otherwise short and very dark hair?  Do. Not. Cut. It. Off.  Please."  Yup, woulda had my swoop.

Instead, I have a half-assed bob, a bit asymmetrical, but nothing special.  My swoop is gone.  And as I suspected, when I don't have someone blow-drying my hair and styling it for 20 minutes straight, it air dries looking like crap."

Guess I won't be going back to Rik Rak.
But that's just me.
I'll note that the stylist was actually a nice guy, but I'd have liked it more if he listened.

I work across the street from Rik Rak and thought I would be kind and go back after my first bad haircut ($50), but alas, even with a different stylist who came "highly recommended", it turned out worse than the first time. I have no problem paying for a good haircut, but I've honestly received $9 haircuts that were better.

Oh, and like many other places, they don't accept credit cards as tip, so you have to use the ATM if you want to tip them...

Lastly, "DailyMeIntern" might actually work for Rik...

I got my hair colored at Samy Salon (Lincoln Rd) a while back and really liked the outcome.  The stylist moved to Rik Rak and I followed him, saying, please do the same color. And I told him what it was, a light to medium brown.  I came out blond! Wow, so pissed. And I was nice about it in the chair and told him that next time I would like it darker.  His response?  No! It should be blond, lighter!  Ummm, you're kidding, right?  You're really telling me what color I want my hair or maybe you're trying to convince me that the blond is good b/c obviously I'm not happy.  Anyway...
Oh yeah, and when I scheduled the color, I wanted to schedule half head of highlights, the receptionist told me to schedule a full head of highlights, "just to make sure he has enough time".  OK, no problem.  Sat down with him, told him I wanted only half head, and 5 minutes later, he starts doing the full head.  ok, stop... etc etc etc.
THEN, after the highlights are done, he tries to make me get a haircut, which I most definitely did not want.  And a blow dry which I mos def did not want.  I think this place makes their stylists upsell like crazy b/c when this guy was at SAMY, he didn't do this to me.  NOT going back. Ever.
Thanks for letting me rant   : )

Rik Rak in Brickell, near downtown Miami is one of the most expensive beauty salons in the city, but it's among the best ones as well. Really good cuts, blow drys and nails. My favorite manicurist is Elza, a brazilian (which already makes her the best).
