Rico's is a decent basic burrito joint. There are many places that have better food and cheaper prices in the mission, but this place is the best in the neighborhood. They've fixed up the interior and it is a pleasant place to enjoy your meal. The service is attentive and the food comes out quickly.
Hint to the Owner: "San Francisco's Famous Burritos"... Come on:
1) Places that are actually famous for something don't have to put it on a sign.
2) Places that do put it on a sign are usually complete rip-offs. See Pergamino Cafe (home of the "World Famous Breakfast") just down the street.
Ricos is a great spot for Mexican food with a South American twist. The menu is vast and filled with such variety. The amount of vegetarian choices was staggering!
They had beers on tap, wine, and great chips and salsa. I had the tacos and they were so good, so fresh. The mango salsa rocked.
My friend's burrito was super good, with great rice and beans. The lettuce in the burrito is a major no in my book - not authentic, never a good idea. Back to the rice and beans: extra points for those, as a Mexican place is not legit if they screw up the basics.
The variety, the quirky vibe, and the quality of the food, make this a must-return-to spot.
Did I mention the awesome chips and green salsa?
Burrito was a huge disappointment. The only I ate half was because I was starving and the time in my lunch hour was quickly dwindling.
No thank you, Rico.
Try the Olive Oyl burrito. It's my favorite.
I have literally registered with yelp just to write a review for this place.
I was really looking forward to eating here and the menu sounded really good. I ordered 2 shrimp tacos and a beer. The beer was the best part. I cannot tell you how DISAPPOINTED I was. It was so bland to the point of being tasteless. I never make mexican food at home, but I could have done better myself - warmed up tacos, with some shredded lettuce, canned pinto beans and the shrimp tasted as if they had just been defrosted and warmed up - actually they were tasteless.
The only good thing about this place was the service. The waiter was nice and attentive.
Thought I would treat myself on a Friday after a long week - what a waste of money!!
Rico's was SO GOOD. Delicious Tamales, great service, and a fun atmosphere. The people working there were super friendly! Also, delicious salsa and HUGE quesadillas. If you're ever in North Beach and looking for some Mexican instead of Italian, Ricos is the best.
I was getting pretty hungry watching my friend get a Tattoo around the corner at Tattoo City, so I decided to try this place out. I was pleasantly surprised to discover this Gem of a Mexican restaurant.
The staff was very nice and my burrito was massive and delicious. I will most certainly be eating here again.
I am suprised at all the negative reviews of this place. Its probably a 4-star restaurant, but I am giving it 5 because it doesn't deserve the engative rating it has right now.
Its a burrito, its cheap, they give you free chips and salsa which is decent, they serve brews, and they are ready fast. What else is there? I have had PLENTY of burritos that were much worse than these. If you people need to turn your nose up at these solid $8 burritos, Gary Danko's is right down the street.
If after a few days after my first visit I can't stop thinking about something I saw on a menu that I didn't get for one reason or another, I have to go back. Such was the case with the winter burrito, a delectable sounding dish containing caramelized onions, eggplant, zucchini and squash. I had two choices. Keep obsessing. Go back. I went back.
So glad I did. This was a fantastic burrito. Packed with veggies, those onions were worth the trip alone. And do not, I repeat, do not, pass up some of the mango salsa. Sweet and fantastic. This should be in all burritos.
Fifth star held back due to the wheat tortilla ($0.35) and salsa ($0.65) surcharge. If Rico were giving those out for free, this might be my favorite burrito in the city.

Choices, choices, choices.
If nothing else, I'll remember Ricos as the mexican restaurant where I… Read more »
I was hungry, and I saw mexican so I tried it, and I was totally disappointed in so many ways. First of all I was attracted to this location by the sign of $2.50 Dos Equis beers and the attraction of a burrito was too much, so I hopped on in. First of all if someone told me this place was authentic I would have laughed in their face, because this is like Californified-Mexican food. I had a chicken verde burrito with pinto beans, and in plain English the whole thing tasted like dry cardboard with green stuff on it. And what makes it worst when went in they were out of almost every single beer I wanted to have. Crappy food, no beer, tositios salsa taste better than the stuff they have here, and no tapaito hot sauce.
There are plenty of other places to eat around this part of North Beach and you would have way better chances of finding food besides here.
Wanted to try this place for a while now and finally went inside this past Sunday. It was empty and just didn't have the smell or vibe of an authentic Mexican joint but we were determined.
While we looked at the menu, we were asked if it was for here or to go. Little did we know that they have waiter service if you eat in...oh well. There are so many choices under the burrito selection, which also told us it's not a real authentic joint - beanie weenie with hot dog and beans? ground beef? popeye with spinach, mushroom, jack cheese? Salchipapa with sausage, peppers, onion and potato? British with steak, mushroom and potato? Burrito with potato is just overload - what, not enough carb already with the flour tortilla, rice and beans? Yikes!
They must cater to the healthier crowds, there are no refried beans just pinto or black beans. Anyway, they have some standard ones as well, we ordered the carnitas burrito ($5.95) after they told us they didn't have lengua. We also got a boiled chicken soft taco ($3.25). A Widmer Hef since they didn't have any horchata.
We didn't have high expectation while we waited for our food. First came a basket of chips with two jars of sauces - one green which was chile verde and a red one that was spicier. The chip was our favorite item - it was fresh and crispy - for the first time, we finished ALL the chips! The taco didn't look very promising - shreds of lettuce and cheese topped it and the chicken looked very bland. The burrito was BIG. After a bite, we were surprised that it actually wasn't bad at all and tasted even better by adding the sauces that came with the chips. Definitely get the burrito Super to get the guacamole, sour cream and cheese for an add'l $1.65 or Mojado w/ enchilada sauce and cheese for $1.50.
The dining area is clean and relatively spacious. There is a bar w/ a few drafts - Widmer Hef, Dos Equis, Speakeasy Big Daddy and Bud? There is a tv playing sports.
Not our first choice for mexican food BUT not a bad option if in the area. We would likely order an entree of sort so we can scoop up the goodies using the tasty chips.
I used to work over on broadway and would walk the extra blocks over to Rico's at least twice a week to eat there! I'm vegetarian and it's hard to find healthy, fresh vegetarian food in north beach, and rico's has a huge selection of great items! The owner is really friendly and accomodating! She comes around several times to fill chip baskets, drinks and all the great salsas. I don't usually review resteraunts but I was really dissapointed about the bad reviews rico's has gotten! It's a great family owned business, and as a girl that lived in the mission, I know good Mexican food! Check out rico's!!!!
This place had the most inattentive sever I have ever had to deal with. First she misidentified the speakeasy beer on tap, claiming that it was the porter when it in fact was the IPA. Then, immediately after bringing out our food, she plopped her butt down at the table behind us to chat with a friend. Not one more, "Is everything OK?", or a, "Do you want another beer?".... nothing, so we just sat there with our empty beer glasses while her tip continued to shrink. The friend was gone by the time we were done but I still had to get up and walk over to her to ask for the check. Then I had to wait while she made two blender drinks for another table before I could hand her my credit card. All the waiting around might have been ok if I had some beer in front of me, but again, she couldn't have care less about that and earned a measly 10% tip - looking back on it, this probably made me look like a European tourist instead of a pissed off local.
The burritos and guac were pretty good and I might drop back in, but if I see that waitress, I'm walking right back out.
"Fine Mexican..." really?
I mean this place was like ok if you were drunk or famished....but fine ain't it. I had carne asada burrito and mind you, the carne asada itself was quite good. But they served the burrito on a plate (which i hate...the whole point of hand held foods is the hand holding), the green ish they passed off as guac on top... and there was some definitely questionable "practices" in their kitchen.
We were pretty drunky from the North Beach Fest, and they pretty much let us run the show which was cool. Doubt I will stumble back though.
The owner splurges on her avocados. They are so fresh and ripe. If you are in North Beach and MUST have mexican, choose Rico's. It is the only mex in Nobe worthy of you.
I swear the lady that works there is fucking racist. I live in the neighborhood and when I first moved there, I gave them a try because they were so close. The bitch started yelling at me because I was getting myself some salsa. It was put out like I was supposed to get it myself, so I did. I left without getting anything from them. I decided to give them one more chance a year later. They were extremely rude to me before I even ordered anything yet! I swear I didn't look like a bum and I was just craving a burrito. Anyway, I never went back because I don't need to be giving my money to people who are so rude
I'll chime in with another "whatever" review. I've been here twice, with no excuse for the second time because it's not like I forgot or was drunk during the first "meh" time. The food here is bland (a high insult for Mexican food), overpriced ($20 for two people at a Mexican restaurant?! WTF) and totally underwhelming.
I've had the enchiladas rojas, the winter burrito and carne asada. In all cases, the chicken was so dry it was painful to eat, the whole dish lacked spice, and the beans were dry. Service is fast, but that's only because there are usually only 1-2 other tables in the restaurant. It's also fast because the server doesn't correctly write down your order! My friend and I clearly asked for black beans the last time we were there and we both got pinto beans. I sent mine back because I had a plate, but he ate his because it was a burrito and he didn't feel like sending it back. For my efforts, I received my plate back swimming in as much black bean juice as possible. I always appreciate retaliation when someone else manages to screw up my order when I speak clearly in a quiet restaurant.
I doubt I'll come back and I don't even recommend this place to people leaving the 8pm show at Cobbs. There are LOTS of restaurants a block away, and even if you really want Mexican, this definitely won't scratch that itch.
I highly recommend the Carne Asada Burrito, but make sure to "super" it (with sour cream, cheese, and guac). The service was great, not slow at all, and friendly.
We ordered beers, chips and salsa, and two of the biggest burritos ever. They were only $5.95 or so. How can they even afford to make such a massive amount of food for so little? It was pretty good overall and since we don't have many Mexican restaurants in the area I am sure to be back!
I noticed this is a hot spot for take out and not very many people stay and eat. But, we did and it was clean, they have a big tv, and prompt waiter service.
Rico's is cool for what it is. And for me it was a place to get a quick meal with friends before seeing a show at Cobb's down the block. My quesadilla was fine, but I think it is really hard to kill a quesadilla. My friends weren't impressed with their chimichangas, but that is ok because it isn't like we're coming back anytime soon.
Totally acceptable place to get a quick dinner in a pinch, but not a place I would ever seek out.
I live in the neighborhood and have walked by this place many times. Never having eaten here before and craving fish tacos, I thought I would give it a try. I concede that I'm a bit of a food snob, but this place was a complete let down.
I ordered the fish tacos, which come in three styles: Baja, with lime and cilantro; Hawaiian, with mango and pineapple; and San Francisco, with their house tartar sauce. I asked for my tacos Baja style, and was soon brought chips and two salsas, red and green.
This was the first disappointment. The chips we bland and I'm sure weren't homemade. They sort of had that baked potato chip texture to them, which I'm not a fan of. And the two salsas they brought certainly looked homemade, I could see bits of cilantro and onions, but they severely lacked in flavor. Worse, the red salsa was actually frozen from being in the fridge. I don't expect my salsa to be warm but frozen? Sheesh...
When my tacos finally arrived after more than 10 minutes, instead of getting three baja tacos as ordered, I got one of each kind. I didn't complain since maybe I misread the menu and they purposely serve one of each style.
Anyways, the soft shell tortillas they used for the taco were tiny and definitely came out of a package. The fish inside them was rubbery and tasted like it had been cooked multiple times. I have to say out of the three styles of fish taco, the San Francisco style was the best. Their homemade tartar sauce was pretty good... despite the fact that it wasn't the style I had ordered. I was starving so I ate the food, but was not happy at all with my selection.
Would I ever go back there? Hell no! They should call this place not-so-Rico Mexican. If you want a good taco go to the Mission!
I love the carnitas soft tacos and chimichangas. Service is always good though it can be slow at times. I've found that if you tell them you're in a hurry, they'll accommodate but otherwise will let you order and eat a a leisurely pace. I'm not sure why some reviewers found the woman who runs the place rude, she's always been incredibly nice to me and many of my co-workers. A lot of us are regulars or semi-regulars so that may be part of it. The chips are also very good. The Burritos are typical California massive size. Definitely recommend.
My opinion genuinely lies with the popular consensus, my burrito was "ok" but I am so spoiled by so many good burritos out there in the world.
I must say, I am partially to blame...
You know how sometimes you want to rebel against what is tried and true for you? Like the other day I got the Reuben at The Plant and was like "why the hell didn't I get the homemade burger!? It is amazing."
Then you eat your crazy, aborted brain fart, all the while resolving to come back and redeem yourself with the "usual" that has come to define your tastes.
I did that here. First off, Rico's has great, creative burrito ideas!
Which I love to see... but I was dumb and THOUGHT I wanted no rice and extra black beans. Always a bad idea because they are just so wet and sloppy. Dumb on my part, I know better.
So in conclusion, I'll go again and get the "Popeye Burrito" (with rice this time) and give them a real chance. But there is no guarantee that they are 4 star worthy.
I will say, it is probably as good as you'll find in North Beach. We will just have to see.
Oh and the waiter was a total champ for being so patient with us. I mean, I was with the pickiest group you'd ever see. So good on em for that.
After wandering the streets in search of post-Elite-event grub last night, Rashmi N. and I finally stumbled upon Rico's, glowing like a beacon of spicy goodness in the distance.
On the plus side, it was clean and open (kind of) late. It was also relatively cheap, and the fresh flowers on each table were lovely.
On the minus side, my burrito was not really memorable. And in a city of memorable food, you've gotta step your game up a little bit.
I'd rather starve than eat here again. I've never felt so inspired to write a bad review but I would hate for fellow Yelpers to fall victim to this place. Their food is over-priced and simply not good. North Beach is not the best neighborhood to find Mexican food, but if you walk a few blocks away to Taqueria San Jose, you'll find a decent burrito.
I should of realized how bad it was when the salsa was bland, and the chips not crispy. While the waitress was very nice, she forgot to put our order in. After twenty minutes she remembered us, but not what we ordered. She comes back and gets our order again. Shortly the food comes out, and it's not what we ordered. More time, food comes.....yuck. Where oh, where can I get decent Mexican food in this city. Seriously, how do you screw up salsa!?!?!? Never again.
Had rico's for dinner last night since we didn't want to journey to the mission. nachos were piled huge - tacos were big, burrito was massive. tons of food for two people. it was okay - but i think my fave is still el faro.
I'm shocked by the low rating! I love this place :)
For a non-mission based Mex restaurant, it's pretty good! North Beach is Little Italy, the Wharf's specialty is seafood... there's not much around for Mexican food, but I'd go there more often if my jeans would let me :)
My husband describes it as "white-r-ized" which I think is an exaggeration. Chevy's is "white-r-ized." There's nothing genuinely ethnic about that place whatsoever.
Rico's has a story and is an efficient, friendly, clean place with good tasting food.
I've never left there even remotely disappointed.
(Then again, I don't walk in there expecting a 5 star snooty brown nosing restaurant either.)
The owner of Rico's is not Mexican. That's okay. But she's definitely got real Mexicans working in the kitchen and serving. These guys aren't spit-shine polished or snobby - they're dudes! They're nice dudes! They make yummy carnitas burritos for my hubby and chili colorado burritos w/black beans and no rice for me :) They don't skimp either, so you definitely get your money's worth.
The owner is your standard quirky San Franciscan woman. She puts a lot of work into the restaurant. She bakes and decorates for the different seasons and holidays, but is busy and a little frazzled sometimes too... I find it funny, as insensitive as that sounds... haha
The place is VERY CLEAN and I am not scared of the bathroom (which is common in most Mexican restaurants I'm sorry to say).
I've never had their brunch but it looks great and I've heard good things about it. I used to get a burrito for lunch and every time they'd include chips and salsa w/o me even asking... mmmm.... warm chips and yummy salsa....
I suppose I should just get more stretch jeans....
It's not just that people want to complain. The food is good, I will give it that. If you are willing to wait over half an hour for a couple of tacos (4 to be exact). Not to mention they got the order wrong the first time, have to re-do it. Wait forever when it really isn't that busy and they forget the guac... Thanks for making me late to Bimbo's... and it is on the pricey side.
Rico's seems to be getting smeared up in here so thought I'd chime in. Never had dinner here and probably would choose to hit up a regular taqueria instead but have to light Rico's up with a couple stars for something that seems overlooked -- their BRUNCH.
While the traditional brunch spots in North Beach are crowded and annoying on the weekends, Rico's is a shining, if somewhat ignored, gem. It is almost never crowded and even has nice outside tables for when it is sunny. Not only is their North Beach breakfast burrito with eggs, potatoes, cheese and sausage amazing (and probably big enough to share if you are not a total pig like me), but the chips and salsa are surprisingly good and they have fresh, delicious juices and smoothies.
Que Rico!
I can't believe all the negative reviews...I've been here a few times and have no complaints. The food is always delicious. The service is always friendly. This is one of my favorite mexican restaurants...certainly the best in the neighborhood. I think some people just like to complain.
I get the same thing every single time without fail - the Popeye burrito (beans, rice, cheese, spinach, & mushrooms). I love it. It is simple, but yummy and delicious.
My fiance has done quite a bit of jumping around the menu. His thoughts about said meals have as well, so 3 stars to average it out.
Suprised at all the negative reviews. I actually like this place! Reasonable prices, good for a quick meal, I always got the carnitas burrito and I wouldn't complain about it.
I'd stopped by Ricos before for churros on the go, but I had never eaten their "real" food until last night.
Here are my observations, in a nutshell:
MARGARITAS: They taste weak at first, but the booze will hit you hard after about half an hour. Trust me, you're going to struggle hard to keep your eyes open and your head up before long....
SALSA & CHIPS: Apparently in 1991 they won an award for their salsa. 16 years later, I'm sensing they'd have a hard time competing against some of the better salsas like at Taqueria Cancun (verde) or Zona Rosa (roja). Not bad, but not attention-garnering stuff either. The chips were a bit thin for my taste, but it could be that they were actually fried in-house. First bowl free. $1 for every bowl after. *frown*
BURRITO: I only tasted the Chile Colorado Burrito which was loaded with chunks of top round steak in spicy red sauce, black beans and rice. Holy cow, this was goooood! In addition to having a nice taste to it (not as spicey as I expected, but rich in flavor), it was huge enough to almost completely fill my oblong plate.
ENCHILADA: My boyfriend had the Enchiladas Verdes with chicken, and it was super bland. The plate came out and looked tempting loaded with beans, rice and cheese, but the chicken (white meat) was pretty much tasteless and not something I needed to have a second bite of.
SERVICE: Totally friendly. Didn't feel rushed to get out of there at all, even though I sat at a table for several minutes waiting before I ordered even a drink. Very nice guys working there.
BATHROOM: Clean. Well lit. Well stocked. AND .... they had SOAP!!
Basically, it seems like you need to choose carefully if you want to get something delicious here. Ask the waiter or counter person whether they can recommend whatever dish that jumps out at you. Chances are, if they haven't eaten it, there's a good reason why not. North Beach is not the Mission, and you'll be able to taste the difference here!
Really surprised to hear all the negative reviews. This place is the best Mexican you'll find in North Beach. If you're that picky.. go to the mission.
I always get the same thing... Carnitas Super Taco (with cheese, guac, and sour cream). The portions are generous and its pretty cheap. Their Guacamole is great too! A perfect combination for a Sunday hangover brunch.
Food comes out quickly, but they won't come around to your table when you're ready to pay. The understanding here is that you'll walk up to the cash register when you're ready to leave.
Minus 1 star for the super cheesy decor.
Hey, ya'll -- this is a great and friendly little neighborhood restaurant that uses high quality and fresh ingredients, has a lot of healthy and vegetarian options, gives a lot of bang for a buck, and is clean as a whistle! The staff is friendly, the sauces are yummy ! What's the problem?! I wish I lived closer -- I'd be there every night sipping my wine margherita!

Any place that dubs themselves "PROBABLY the best" at something deserves a shot. At Rico's - they believe they are "PROBABLY the best burrito in town". I guess they haven't really sold themselves on their own goods just yet. If I were to cast my ballot (which I will here and now), I would say that Rico's is "PROBABLY NOT the best burrito in town".
It's decent. The location is decent. The churros are the shit. The service is just plain shit. They often forget you're there - esp when it comes time to pay the bill. I've been tempted to walk out on more than one occasion, but that PROBABLY wouldn't be a good idea.
Decent, super-sized burritos! After eating one of these, I usually refrain from eating anything else for 12+ hours.
The cops who come here during lunch apparently don't.
I do not even know where to begin.
THE FOOD was not very good---dry, lacking salsa and spice, and I paid to add sour cream and guacamole; only to realize once I got to my destination that they forgot to add it.
THE SERVICE was slow, slow, slow. I waited 25 minutes for two simple chicken burritos to go. What self-respecting Mexican food joint takes 25 minutes to make a burrito?
THE PRICE was outrageous, almost $20 for two burritos and nothing else.
The ONLY redeeming part about my visit was that of the 12 guys in the place (one woman came in as I was leaving) at least 9 of them were gay AND of those guys, 5 were hot! Good ratio! I thought for a second I was in the wrong neighborhood.
As usual, and sadly, I was more hungry than horny.
As a burrito fanatic, my reviews/standards are always a bit skewed for Mexican places, but I generally agree with the consensus here. The food is here a bit pricey for what it is.
If Chipotle served up enchiladas as well, you'll essentially have a Rico's, but even a bit better sadly.
Let me tell you, there is nothing fine about Ricos.
I ordered the chimichanga with shredded pork and ended up getting one filled with fatty chunks of pork and cheese. Totally gross. I couldn't get enough of the tortilla, though. It appears the tortilla was smothered with lard/butter, lightly toasted, and then dusted with crack. Rico's famous pinto beans were bland, and the rice was mediocre. Eh.
The first basket of chips is free, but a dollar is charged for each additional basket ordered. Super lame. You get red salsa and green salsa. Neither one is that great, but I liked the green one better because it had a little kick to it.
The Dos Equis, at $3.50 a pop, was the best part of the meal.
Overpriced, low quality Mexican food. No thanks.
