I've been a customer at Rick's Performance for quite some time now. I've always received nothing but the most professional service. Like some of us, I can't afford not to provide my car with the best service possible---including oil changes and other routine service.
Above and beyond professionalism, Rick and his friendly, trained (& certified!) staff, have been more than generous to me during a time when I've needed it the most. I know that the folks at Rick's really do care.
Rick's deserves your business! Go....! Try them out! They're open on Saturdays, can give you a ride home & back, clean waiting area and honest, reasonably-priced service. They aim to please...

Outstanding customer service! Rick actually answers the phone. Clean. Reliable. High quality work. This is the type of auto repair place you dream about, but are rare. I exclusively had all my service done by the Infiniti dealership for the past 5 years, but now going exclusively to Rick's.

I brought my FD in to Rick's because of all the reviews. This was the first time I brought my car any car to a shop since I normally do my own work. But since this was my first turbo rotary, i figured I should bring it to a professional. I informed Rick before i dropped off the car that I have problems with the sequential system because it was running a newer JDM motor so it had the newer 'black box'(i think thats what they called it) I told him I want to see how much it would cost to remove the sequential system. He informed me to do a basic diagnostic so I went ahead and did it.
After a couple hours later he came and told me that I would need new bushings and what not. But here's the kicker, he also said its running a jdm motor so in order to make the sequential run i would need to purchase all the OEM USDM sequential parts. First of all, i told him what I wanted a quote on, second of all DUH I'm running a jdm motor I TOLD YOU!
All in all i ended up leaving with about $135 that seemed to have been ripped out of my pocket. In the end I ended up buying a sequential block off kit and did everything myself, go figure.
If you have any mods in your car I recommend bringing it to a performance shop where they can diagnose more advance issues. Other than that non diyers you have no choice but to shell out that extra cash. Sorry.
edit: I was being too harsh. The shop is really clean and nice. Im sure you'll get decent service if your car is stock, but be sure to explain everything in detail on whats going on with your car.Comment from Rick S. of Rick's Performance 3/29/2011

Decided to call Rick for oil change + checking brakes / transmission fluid (and possible replacement) after reading all the glowing reviews on Yelp. On that phone call, he was courteous and gives me a time the same day afternoon. I realize that some reviewers have posted that Rick gave them 50% discount for first time oil change. So I call him back to ask if he still does that. He tone changes completely. He becomes curt, almost rude. He says that he will give me the 50% discount, but all of sudden he can no longer accomodate me till next week, no matter that he himself gave me an earlier appointment less than 10 mins ago.
Needless to say, I found another more customer friendly mechanic who prefers to keep their customers for the long term rather than on a transaction-to-transaction basis.Comment from Rick S. of Rick's Performance 9/20/2011

Got an oil change here quite a while ago after seeing the stellar reviews for this place.
What originally was meant to be an oil change later on turned into an oil change plus getting nails out of TWO tires. I really don't know how nails could have gotten into two of my tires without me noticing, but I found it an extremely odd coincidence that it happened in their lot. Charged me full price for removing the nails from both of my tires and I ended up spending the same amount of money as a regular oil change even though I mentioned the Yelp review.
I'm trying to be generous by giving them an extra star because I could tell Rick seemed like an honest person, however really what are the odds I get two tires punctured when I bring it in this shop. I'm not accusing Rick's of doing anything malicious, but I would bargain to bet someone didn't clean up properly while they had my car.Comment from Rick S. of Rick's Performance 2/16/2011

OK, let me begin by giving a mixed review.... I went in for an oil chnage, they did an entire inspection when I told them I did not have time for that.
That said, I know I had a few minor things that needed attention; post inspection they confirmed what I knew I needed and then told me I also need a tail light blub; that is all!! They are HONEST!! So an oil change, conformation of what I needed and a $1.50 tail light blub and I am on my way!
Will go back and recommend... they do all Asian lines of autos as well as Volvos! Mention it is oyur first time and they give you 50% your first oil change! If you are a Safeway employee - 10% off future work! -

I never knew car service could be so detailed, clean and not super expensive!
Came on a recommendation of my soon-to-be father-in-law and I have finally found a car repair place that I trust and would happily recommend. Course I am selling my car to go carless but that's the way it goes, isn't it?
We dropped off my car without an appointment and it took them a few days to get to it, but I didn't need my car in a hurry (and told them so). When I came to pick it up, they explained everything in easy to understand terms, and didn't cost nearly as much as I imagined it would. A+ service. And crazy clean! A very professional and courteous environment.
I live in the city, but it's worth the trip out, imho. -

Okay, when I want to shell out big $$$ for things to get done, I expect the party whose receiving my $ to give a F about their customer. It doesn't matter if I'm paying for a company dinner at a nice restaurant or having major work done on a home - the people servicing you should care, not only about the product they are providing, but how well informed you as a customer are about it.
Took my car in the other day to get some work done and called to check on it. They told me that they were working on it and would call back with an estimated time that it would be done, after they spoke w/ the tech. Okay fine.... one hour later - still no call.
Called back. They told me that the car is done, but they needed to do the write up and they would call back after that was done so I could pick it up. 1/2 hour later = still no call.
So I went over there and they said they still haven't finished the write up. The place had some cars in there, but they weren't busy at the desk. Does it really take 45 minutes to do a write up? No, it takes 15. From the moment I walked into the door and I was there, they started working on it.
Good service, nice people in person, through explanation of what was done on the vehicle and any issues... This is the only reason it retains a 4 star rating.
Getting an answer on the status of your car? 1 star. -

Best experience having my car repaired EVER. They don't even technically repair the type of car I took in, my Jaguar (RIP), and he still agreed to take it and repaired it for 1/4 what the Jaguar dealer wanted to fix the car. It was interesting though that Rick's place was able to fix the problem with fewer repairs than what Jaguar said I needed. Hmmmmmm. This of course sold me on Rick's even more.
Staff is super nice. Lobby is super clean and has wireless. Pleasant place to be while you wait. I have a Mercedes now which they don't work on or you can bet that's where I'd take it. I did go to them though for a referral for my new car and they were happy to help. I tried to talk them into fixing my Mercedes, but not such luck.
If you take your car here, you won't be disappointed. I sure wasn't and I'm a single female that is totally intimidated by anything car repair related. -

I found this place on Yelp and because I didn't want to get ripped off at the dealership. The receptionist was super friendly when she took my appointment which is much appreciated. They do honor the 50% oil changes when you mention Yelp and I got a $18 discount. I had my front rotors changed, which I had no idea how much would cost. After receiving my estimate I immediately googled online how much rotors usually cost and I think I got a really good deal.
Everytime I called that day they were super friendly and totally knew which car was mine and everything that was going on with it. It was ready 30 minutes before they predicted it would be. -

Rick's Performance was an outstanding experience! Rick and his staff are all very friendly and extremely knowledgeable.
I brought my car in for an oil change, an alignment, and to get a transmission leak fixed. I didn't have anyone to take me home and much to my surprise Rick's offered door to door service to drop me off at my home and to pick me up once my car was done!
The inspection report that came with my car was very thorough and much to my surprise... the things the Quickie Lube had been telling me I needed replaced, Rick confirmed that they were just fine.
I had to bring my car back after I got the engine steam cleaned from the tranny leak and Rick quickly identified the problem. They had to get the part from Hyundai and after discovering that we had missed the truck from San Leandro, they quickly called Tracy and were able to get the car part that same day delivered. I was extremely relieved since the last thing I wanted to do was to take another day to get my car fixed.
The prices are VERY reasonable and Rick's will definitely be my long-term mechanic from here on out. Workshop is immaculately clean as well! -

This place is great. Expert knowledge, service, and attentiveness that all adds up to a satisfying experience. Rick's always ready and willing to explain each and every service, and there's a guarantee that comes with their service as well.
Sure, you pay the price for it, but I think the end result is a whole lot worth it, so do give it a try, if you do happen to own a rotary! :-) -

I made the appt, my husband took the car.... and I get to write the review.....hmmmm.....
Anyways...he was pleased. Just went for an oil change and everything was great. The only thing is they did not ask and he did not specify...so we ended up with regular oil instead of synthetic....even though it is a 2010 model and only synthetic is recommended by the manufacturer for this model. Anyways.... we are thrilled to find a good place and we will be back!!! -

I have to say I am soo glad that I trusted my fellow yelpers and went to Rick's to get my car (a Volvo) repaired.
A few things to note:
1. Rick checks his email- so if you don't have time to place calls, you can email him, and he is great about responding and calling back and giving you timely estimates for parts and labor
2. I had told Rick that I had really bad service from a local car dealer repair shop, and that they told me my car needed another $3K+ in repairs (the car's blue book is only about $5K) and I had already spent about $2K on the car- so I wasn't happy and decided to seek advice elsewhere
3. Rick did a free independent assessment on the vehicle and then made recommendations for my car. Based on his assessment, there were only 3 things that needed to be repaired- which cost me about $400. I should also mention that I have a friend who has a repair shop (but for race cars) and he said that Rick's quotes for parts and labor were great and I should definitely have him do the work!
4. My car runs great now and I feel confident that it'll last me the next two years (which is what I wanted). Rick had the car finished when promised too (can't say the same for the dealer that had tried to fix my car earlier).
5. Rick's waiting area has a wireless network so you can actually work there while your car is being repaired. I think that is a huge plus!
Thanks Rick to you and your crew for doing such a great job- I'll definitely be back and sending referrals!!!! -

My Mazda stalled and would not restart. I panicked, had my car towed to Rick's, and signed on the dotted line. Rick's charged me $65 to tell me I needed a new battery. Then, I was charged $65 to have the battery installed. The cost for the battery was $92.
When I brought the car home I looked at my records and my last battery change was April 3, 2009.

Shirley is so nice, I really enjoy dealing with her.
Not to mention, the shop personnel have been super useful in fixing my 2001 Volvo V70 (aka the XC70 Station Wagon, first year of that model and lots of problems). The Volvo dealership in San Leandro never was much help, and they were rude to boot.

This really is as good as it gets. I recently went to Toyota to get an oil change and tire rotation, during this routine check they found out that my water pump was leaking coolant and that my cabin air filter needed to be replaced. Normal issues any car will have, however, due to the outrageous price I could not authorize (nor afford) what Toyota was charging. Searched a bit and called Rick's. I needed to get my car in before the labor day weekend which they could do and they were much more affordable than Toyota.
Rick and his staff were extremely friendly and knowledgeable. He has been in the business right out of college so he really knows his stuff. Rick replaced the water pump and cabin air filter, he picked me up from work and took me to the shop to get my car! In my book this was GREAT customer service. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this auto mechanic shop!!! -

Usually have good service at a fair price. This last visit there was confusion with the estimate. The amount written in the ORIGINAL ESTIMATE line was actually the amount of the estimate minus the deposit. Unfortunately, we mistook that as the total estimate. Bummed when found out we had to pay an extra $100.
Policy of charging more for credit cards when take number over the phone is understandable, but not technically legal. (CA law that can't surcharge for CC, can give cash discounts) CC companies charge you more when you hand punch in a number vs swiping the card. Paid with CC in person, no problem or surcharge, but means I can't send my teen to pick up my car...bummer. -

I called this place for a quote regarding major service for my car. It took them 40 minutes to call me back and they quoted $70 higher than what the Dealer was charging. Aren't independent mechanics supposed to be CHEAPER than the Dealer? One extra star because the guy was curteous on the phone.

Found this place on yelp. They were just as good if not better than everyone said they would be. Great price and great service. Quoted me on a brake job and oil change. Had them perform the service as quoted and came out less than quoted. I think I'm through with taking my vehicle to the dealer for service. Thanks to Rick's Performance!

Experience here started out well...but went downhill.
As they say about most unsatisfied customers "I don't complain...I just don't come back" this place started at 5 stars but for me down to 2...
I had been taking my car here for about 2 years and was glad to find a local garage of high quality... but started to find it hard to get to and from my job in Pleasanton (not so convenient). I do like how Rick will explain what's really the issue with my car however have not been so impressed with the people skills of the other younger man at the front desk.
What put me off:
My water pump was leaking and they diagnosed it pretty quickly but told me the part wouldn't be fixed that day as they couldn't get one til the next day...Front desk guy asked "Do you need your car today?" seemingly oblivious to the fact that I live 28 miles to the east (guess he didn't remember that part of customer service...) well I needed it that day and was told they'd have to charge me to put it back together (yes I knew this up front). However I was hoping that maybe they would soften the blow of a $400.00 repair by giving me something off the $64 diagnosis fee. Add to this the fact that when I asked if they would also replace the 145000 mile old water pump belt Front Desk guy quickly stated "oh it doesn't need it"....still had to get a ride out to Rick's 'cause they had no one to give me a ride...so that was it...Front Desk Customer service is critical, little things like knowing where they live and work and stress about shelling out big money for repairs is extremely important.
I ended up pricing the same job at Tracy Mazda and paid the same price, INCLUDING the belt and getting a convenient ride to my home without having to wait an inordinate amount of time. -

After "THE" car accident, our car was in the shop for 3 months. We get it back and the check engine light kept coming on. So State Farm suggested we take it to Rick's. BEST DECISION State Farm has ever made. The guys there are awesome. Very VERY nice people who knew what they were doing and didn't beat around the bush. They fixed the problem pronto and even sent us a thank you in the mail. AND then they gave us a call on the phone to make sure that everything was alright! I will be going back here for all my future car needs on my Mitsubishi. And it also helped that their one employee, Ryan, he's a HOTTIE! :)

I found Rick's from yelp and was thrilled with their service. As a woman taking her car in for service I often feel I will be taken advantage. Rick was super nice. The business is pristine and the cleaniest mechanics shop I've ever been too. The fixed my car within the hour. They even called a few days after my service to ensure I was happy and even mailed me a thank you card. As a customer that is how I want to be treated. Ricks understands there are millions of auto places you can choose from and appreciates the patronage of the client.

Review from Tricky H.

I am incredibly insecure about taking my car in for tune ups. I am not interested in learning about cars and have never sounded very smart when talking to mechanics. I am always worried that I will be taken advantage of because of my lack of knowledge. So far I have taken my Honda to the Honda dealership in Dublin. Unfortunately, this place does not seem interested in talking to me about specific problems I had with the car, instead I got a feeling that they were rushing me through and I don't think they paid attention to small details like turning off my check engine light.
I made my appointment for Ricks online after reading the other yelp reviews. It was easy to pick a time and I got an email confirmation. Then I got a $20 discount for making the appointment online.
At Rick's, the mechanic who helped me was incredibly polite, respectful, and listened to my worries over my car. I had asked him to make sure my car was in good condition to drive to Seattle (and turn off the check engine light). He wrote all my concerns down, looked at my car, then called me back in an hour to give me a detailed and easy to understand review of what he had found. After listening to his advice, I ended up spending 175 dollars to get my tires rotated, my brakes checked, my windshield wipers replaced, my air filter changed, and my oil changed. The oil change was free since I am a first time customer.
I got a really good feeling bringing my car here. I felt like it was an honest, competent place. Even the waiting room is clean and comfortable. The individual attention I got reminded me why it is better to go to independent stores than chains. -

I brought my car by Rick's to get a quote on getting my brakes fixed because the Big-O dealer told me that it "was time" for new breaks. NOT...according to Rick! Rick looked at the brakes, and let me know that I have a lot of tread left and it isn't yet necessary to replace my brakes. His shop is so clean, very cozy, they offer rides if you need them, they have a really nice TV, if you wish to wait. He is honest and deserves every repeat clients he has. My sister has also had her car serviced here and love them as much as I do.

Yay for Rick's! As a girl its hard to find a mechanic that isn't going to try to "pull a fast one" on me and overcharge me for some BS I don't need. I have been all over the Tri-Valley area to plenty of different shops and have always found my way back to Rick's. I've been going to Rick's for the last two years and I refuse to go anywhere else. Rick is really honest, my car runs great, and the staff is super friendly! Couldn't be happier!

Review from Lori E.

I have been taking my car to Rick's for about 8 years now. I wouldn't trust the care of my car to anyone else. In fact, I drive all the way from San Francisco to Pleasanton to have it serviced because I really trust the mechanics at Rick's Rotary.
A couple years back, my Miata got broken into. The thieves somehow popped the convertible cover back, causing damage to the latches. Although this was not technically an "engine" thing, Rick went out of his way to help me get the problem fixed. He ordered the parts through Mazda and even installed them for me, despite the fact they had nothing to do with the engine. As I had been pretty distressed about having my car broken into, this "above and beyond" level of service really meant a lot to me.
Most recently, my car had a meltdown, literally. While driving across the bridge, I couldn't get the defrost to work. After the car had been stopped for a while, coolant began leaking into the driver side floor of the car. I knew something was terribly wrong. I called Rick and he immediately suspected the heater core. He was able to see me right away, and confirmed that the heater was indeed the culprit. Rick also took it upon himself to make several phone calls, ensuring that I would receive the best deal for this costly repair. And after Mazda didn't send the best possible part for my car, Rick also took it upon himself to make sure they sent what was needed and honored the price they had originally quoted. It was still a pretty costly repair, but I felt like Rick really took my needs into consideration and did everything he could to make the situation as palatable as possible. During the process, he explained what was going on in a way that I could understand. On top of it all, he and his crew are always courteous and professional.
I really trust Rick's Rotary and would recommend them highly to anyone who needs a good and honest mechanic. -
Review from J M.

This is a great shop. I've brought my car here for several tune-ups. They are honest, straightforward and helpful.
It feels very much like a family owned operation, with great customer service and individual attention for each customer. The owner called me after my visit to make sure that I was happy with the service. It was a nice touch, and has definitely stuck in my mind.
I think their prices are pretty fair. I originally brought my car here because their price quote for a 60K service on my Honda was so much better than other shops or the dealership. The last time I brought my car in for a regular service, they quoted me a really high initial price, but when I asked them to breakdown the individual components, they ended up putting together a MUCH cheaper quote (like 40% cheaper). It felt a little weird that the initial bundled price was so much higher than their re-structured quote, and I didn't like the fact that I needed to contest the price (as their straightforwardness and fair prices was what attracted me in the beginning), but I was pleased with the end result and the final pricing, so I can't complain too much.
All in all, I'd definitely recommend Rick's. -

A few months ago, I had never heard of Rick's Performance... Since initially trusting them with an oil change, they have now skillfully taken care of all three of my family vehicles for scheduled maintenance and other issues.
