11 reviews for Rick's Chophouse
Restaurant 4 stars (very good)
Restaurant + Bar 5+ stars (way off the scale)
This restaurant really is the jewel in downtown McKinney's crown. In addition to valet parking (when they are busy) they also have some of the best sidewalk seating and, occasionally, live music on the sidewalk. The food is good. My husband had the "Cowboy" (a porterhouse) and I had a filet. I think mine was the better of the two but part of that is the "onion ring" that comes with the Cowboy. It is large and unwieldly and my sides, I think, were better. Both plates seemed huge and were cooked perfectly.
You could easily have dinner here on the patio without realizing that they have a wonderful upscale bar inside. I strongly recommend that you retire to the bar for an after-dinner drink, thus making the whole experience soar off of the five star scale. It's in the back, through the restaraunt. It's a lot of sumptuous dark wood, plush chairs and couches and a to-die-for bar. They have live music back here too and excellent wait staff throughout.
Keep in mind that this is connected to a hotel so, although it is a good environment for dressing up, they are not going to kick you out if you are wearing jeans. We felt underdressed but we had just stopped in on a lark because we hadn't made up our mind where we wanted to eat and, already downtown, we decided to try Rick's since we hadn't been before. The staff didn't seem to mind at all.
I loved the ambiance of the place. As a lonely traveler, I went straight to the bar. It took the bartender 'Jamaica' , a good 15 mins to get to me. When I finally ordered my pork chop, it got to real quickly, in like 10 minutes( the waiter claimed he picked it off another table). As for the food, the pork chop itself was a little dry, but the portion was enormous. It came with goat cheese, a potato pancake and apricot jam.
I would say the price is on the higher end. I ended up paying around $30 for the pork chop and a beer. An OK experience for a chop house, but if you are really hungry, go straight to the tables (get a reservation).
Two reviews: restaurant and venue for a wedding
The restaurant has really good food and drinks. The service was OK, and the food was really poorly timed (appetizers and salad arrived at the same time, then waited 25 minutes for main course). The steak, sides, and salads were all amazing.
I had my wedding here. The wedding organizer was extremely disorganized. She basically needs to be managed to remember any deadlines, etc. The venue is pretty nice and inexpensive, and the wedding dinner was OK, so if you can deal with the organizer it will turn out fine.
I think Rick got it right - the food is excellent, the service is fantastic and the ambiance is right on! It has this cool, step back in time with some modern touches vibe to it. I've been there a few times, twice for lunch and a few early Saturday evening drinks. It has never been a hit or miss - always consistent, which I love. Weekday lunches are alright, lots of business men who strut around and shake hands with each other and talk loudly of their next business aquisition...but don't mind them, they don't know any better. You will barely notice them with the warm decor and private dining feel! I personally like Rick's best on a Saturday - sit on their patio and people watch on Square. That's always good entertainment! They have a great Jazz bar inside, good music on the weekend and comfy yet luxe interior. If you haven't visited McKinneys newly remodeled downtown square, go check it out - and grab a bite at Ricks.
I absolutely loved the burger I had for lunch a few weeks ago. It had crispy onion strings on it and it was delectable! My burger was a perfect medium well, and everything else was good too! My friend ordered the crab cakes here, which much to our delight were not sticky and dense (see my review about the Nate's in Allen if you want to understand this). None the less, I would go back for lunch any day. It is a little pricier than normal, but you are paying for great service. Our waiter was on the ball with drinks and perfect with ordering timing.
Rick's was fantastic! I have had steaks at several "great" steak places in Dallas lately and Rick's was far above them. The SERVICE was wonderful. I almost had forgotten what good service was like.
The filet was really incredible. Great service, wonderful food. That is why McKinney isn't really that far. You'd wait twice as long at some Dallas restaurants only to have to deal with your waiter's drama over where you sat, how you spoke, etc. What are we tipping them so profusely for? Oh well, can you tell I have had a few bad dinners lately. Won't mention any names here. I'll put my two cents worth on their site.
We ate at Rick's Wednesday night. The outdoor patio area on the square is great. Service was a bit slow. It took a long time to get drinks, bread. They forgot to light the candles on the table. I asked for a wine recommendation and it was very disappointing. We ordered the Wedge. It was great. We ordered the pork chop - not so great. It was a weird dish. It was a bed of sauted napa cabbage(which was pretty bland), topped by what they called a potato pancake(which was an overcooked hasbrown) topped with a goat cheese stuffed chop(the chop was way too salty and overall bland) which was topped by peaches. We were very disappointed.
We went to McKinney to visit my sister... I mean, why else would you be there, right? (sorry kyle) Our first night, we decided to go out for a nice steak dinner and since my parents were staying in the Grand Hotel, we checked out Rick's (which is located just off the lounge).
We decided to sit out on their patio, which looks out over the square/court house. It was a nice evening - although storm clouds were looming in the distance and the occasional lightning strike would raise my anxiety level a tad - but it never amounted to anything and we were able to remain on the patio for the entire evening.
The restaurant itself comes across as the quintessential steakhouse. You have the dark wood walls, the small private rooms separated by glass walls and library shelves, white linen tablecloths, old black and white framed photos lining the walls - showing what the small historic town used to look like, a huge bar/lounge with a grand piano, plush leather seating, and a huge bar lining the wall... and it goes on...
So enough about the place itself - on to the food!
We all started off with their spinach salad - how can you not get the bacon vinaigrette, right? It served its purpose. My mom ordered a different salad that had spiced pecans on them - so beware... they are HOT. No sweetness in these spiced pecans! For the entrees, my mom and sister had their cornmeal crusted trout - which I think may have been slightly overcooked, but I didn't try it so I'm not going to judge whether or not it was good. My dad had their filet - which I think he ate it all, so I'm guessing it was good - I decided to go ALL OUT. I was going to get their shrimp & grits until I was told it was spicy (damn texans making things spicy!) So I changed my mind and ordered The Cowboy plate! A bone-in ribeye steak, a loaded baked potato, fried onion rings, and a bernaise sauce. No greens on this plate! It arrived and I was in shock! It is huge, people! This steak can feed 3 people easy! I think I had the winning plate, though - the steak was delicious, the onion rings were great - the potato tasty - and i had another meal to take home!
For desserts - we split the key lime pie and the apple pie. The key lime was the obvious winner. Instead of a whipped toppping, they topped it with a meringue that they obviously took a torch to and gave it some color and texture. The apple pie was good - it was served warm with a scoop of ice cream on top, which I *think* was a bourbon flavored ice cream, but I could be wrong - I just can't remember.
Anyway - the restaurant was good - the service was great - I forgot to mention that important part! Service was wonderful. So I'd definitely go here again (when someone else is paying) if I'm ever in the McKinney area again.
Great find in the McKinney area! Their appetizers are delicious and big, so sharing is always an option. My steak was cooked just as I asked and the vegetables were a great compliment. If your food comes out incorrect, do not be afraid to speak up. I've never encountered an issue with them fixing a mistake. All of the wait staff I have encountered have been friendly and helpful. It can be crowded on the weekends, so you may want to make reservations in advance. There is also a lounge area in the back that offers music and a full bar. If you have to wait to be seated, head to the lounge and relax for a while. This makes a great venue for a dinner date or a casual get together with friends or family.
This review may be a little biased as my wedding reception was in the Grand Ballroom, but my anniversary dinner at Rick's was one of the best meals I have ever had. The salmon I had was incredible - moist and flavorful on the inside with smoked salmon and greens on top. The potatoes it came with were a great twist on traditional Texas mustard potato salad. We ordered a crab dip and while the portion was small, it was delicious as well. The desert was wonderful - the apple pie was good, but the bourbon flavored ice cream on top of it was delicious - it had a warm creamy vanilla bourbon flavor. The diving room and hotel are both beautiful and have been wonderfully restored. I can't think of a better place for a romantic meal.
Rick's Chophouse is located in the historic Grand Hotel on the western quadrant of McKinney's town square. Although the hotel and restaurant are under heavy construction right now (in order to add a large outdoor patio and 47 additional guest rooms) Rick's is alive and well!
I have dined at Rick's before and I have never had a bad experience. From their signature drinks (strawberry-basil mojito, anyone?) to their incredible entrees (chicken friend prime rib eye, with chives, sour cream, bacon mashed potatoes and sauteed green been for only $14!) their menu has something for every palate - Southern or not!
The service is on par with fine dining and the restaurant itself evokes a vibe that might trick one into thinking that for a brief moment they were a fly on the wall watching a circa 1920's oil tycoon meeting. From the dark wood floors and accents to the deep red leather booths and off set private dining rooms flanked with walls of wine storage, one can easily sit back, squeeze a lemon into their tea and say, "I do declare, Rick Wells knows how to serve a fine plate of food."
Every plate of food served is immaculately prepared and delicious. The service is attentive and genuine - even in off hours when the only seating open is within the bar area. Large groups and special event requiring private areas are welcome.
Some of the fare I have sampled at Ricks include:
Chophouse Salad
Julienne Spinach, Romaine, Iceberg, and Radicchio with Smoked Turkey, Bacon, Tomatoes, Cucumber, Roasted Corn, Pinto Beans, Hearts of Palm, Scallions, Pepper Jack Cheese in a Lemon- Herb Ranch
Country Fried Ribeye
Our version of Chicken Fried Steak, Sour Cream and Bacon Smashed Redskin Potatoes, Garlic Green Beans, Pan Gravy
Spinach and Crab Dip
A creamy dip with cheese, lump crab meat, and lots of fresh wilted spinach. Served with fresh, warm tortilla chips.
Bread Pudding
Served in a large mug, with a Texas sized scoop of Henry's orange ice cream over the top.
Amaretto Creme Brulee
Served with almond biscotti
Creamy Chocolate Cheesecake
With a cinnamon graham cracker crust
This is a place I will go to just to have drinks and dessert. It is beautiful and Rick is usually hanging around ready to shake hands.
Come to Rick's Chophouse and relax. You will be treated to gracious hospitality, fine place settings, elegant ambiance, and proper service from all angles. Prepare to be wined and dined and not have sticker shock when the bill comes.
Above all - go check it out in mid to late July when the patio is slated for completion!
