Rick's Cafe has never disappointed in all my times there for lunches and dinners. The menu is mostly made up of pub-style food. There are many cocktails to choose from and the bar is a cool area to hang out with friends. The greatest is when the piano player is on...he plays the best of Billy Joel, Elton John and other classic favorites.

I walked in the door and for about the first 5 minutes i was impressed. The dining room was large and spacious, the walls had plenty of decorations and there was a piano bar with a piano player who was fairly talented. As good as the atmosphere everything else from that point forward was a let down. Our waitress was not only bad but kept making awkward small talk with us. Both mine and my 2 companions ordered a different martini special and all 3 of us complained our drinks were weak. Its one thing if i complain about this but when my girlfriend complains her drink is week thats telling you its pretty bad. For a app i ordered clam chowder and no lie it was green. It was not a chowder at all come to think of it but was served in a greenish broth and was not very good. For a entree i ordered some kind of ny cheesburger and it was pretty much the plainest blandest burger i have eaten in a long time. It was sooooo bad i even put the devils condiment ketchup on it. Needless to say i was less than impressed and WILL NOT be back to this establishment.

Located on a corner of a plaza shared with Bertucci's and another food establishment, Rick's is actually quite spacious inside once you get past the hostess stand. Just beyond the initial dining room is a second strip of booths that overlook the bar area. In the bar area is a padded piano where folks can sit at.
A nice thing about their menu is that they give you the option of ordering many items in either full or half portions, with prices to match. This gives diners the opportunity to do more mixing and matching than at most other restaurants. Thus we decided to share two apps and two entrees - everything in small portions, which was more than enough for our two healthy appetites.
The apps arrived at the same time as the soft warm loaf of pale bread. The small Loaded Potato Skins - Our own hand cut house made skins, smothered in Bacon & Cheese - $3.95 arrived as two large half potatoes covered with our toppings of choice. Good! The small Onion Rings - Hand cut and served with our house made dipping sauce - were plenty for the $2.95 price tag, and were crisp and yummy. I didn't even miss the honey mustard that I had requested, since the house sauce went so well with it.
The small Sirloin Tips - Marinated in our own blend of barbeque sauce - $9.95 were tasty but a bit tough, and the side of fresh veggies that came with it were tender carrot sticks and a bit too mushy string beans. The Fettuccini Alfredo - Imported egg pasta tossed with a rich cream sauce garnished with shaved parmesan, Romano and basil -small with chicken for $9.95 was tasty with tender chicken, but nothing special.
When we spotted a pair of salads passing by, we suddenly realized that we hadn't received the salads that were supposed to come with Rick's Grille's Entrees and House Favorites... turns out (according to our waiter) the courtesy salads come automatically only with the large orders, but are only brought out with the smaller portions upon request. Ummm... if you say so, but I do believe that would be false advertisement if that were actually true, given what was printed in the menu. -

I have never made a complaint online against a restaurant, but I had to about Ricks Cafe!
Last night I went to Ricks Cafe for the first time, I am originally from New York and recently moved here.It was recommended so I ordered 2 pizzas to go. I am a vegetarian and therefore do not eat meat so I ordered a Pineapple pizza and explicitly told the woman, not pineapple and ham...just pineapple. I watched her enter it into the computer right. 30 mins later after being told 10 mins, I left with my Pizza. When I got home and started eating it it tasted good. But when I got to the second half of the pizza I noticed I had eaten something that didn't taste right. So I spit it out and of course it was ham...all over the other half of my pizza. Now being a vegetarian, I have encountered these mishaps before. So I returned today to politely explain and ask for a refund. They got me the owner and when he came out and asked me what I needed already in a mean and miserable voice, I preceded to explain. Well long story short, he refused to give me my money back and threw the receipt back at me. I asked him his name and he told me he would have the cops called and have me taken out in cuffs then told me to get out of his restaurant.
I have never been spoken to like that before, especially by the owner of a RECOMMENDED restaurant! All I asked for was my money back, when if I really wanted to I could have made a scene or reported it. I feel as though this might be due to the fact I was a young woman who was alone...he felt he could speak to me that way!
Anyway, he was unprofessional and I plan on reporting him the the better business bureau among other websites etc. I will not be going there again and would warn people...the restaurant offers a great atmosphere and nice servers, but the owner himself does not know how to properly handle situations. Be careful if you have a complaint, especially if you are a woman and are alone. -

I've always wanted to try Rick's but have never gone until Kelly and I went. It was surprisingly good. The service was wicked helpful and the food selection was good. I had the Chicken Parm which was good and filling, I even had some to take to work the next day.
They have a piano in the back by the bar but you can hear the music throughout the entire restaurant. The interior has a sort of Casablanca feel to it. It's nice. It's also very larger than I thought that it would be and the whole restaurant is spread out so that you don't feel cramped.
Definitely stop in if you are looking for a place to eat before the movies!Listed in: Free Refills!

Giving 2 stars only because I had an "ok" experience here late-night after my wedding (what can I say? We got the "hungry horrors", plus the Sox were in the playoffs enroute to their 2nd WS and the apps were good enough)...
The only other time hubby and I went by ourselves for dinner (relatively early - maybe around 5-5:30?), we were seated by a cardboard cutout masquerading as a hostess, then promptly ignored by everyone who worked there for about 20 minutes (we actually lasted that long just out of morbid curiousity - "How long can they help everyone around us, including tables RIGHT NEXT TO US, and not even acknowledge that we are sitting here with nothing, not even menus, on our table?").
When we got up and left, the "hostess" didn't even bother to express any interest as to why... perhaps she didn't even remember seating us not 20 minutes before? Or maybe she thought we were speed-eaters? Whatever... never again. -

Good if you are planning on going to the movie theatre next door...they sell discount tickets. Its just your basic american restaurant...with everything from burgers to pizza. As a nacho lover myself, i am dissapointed with their use of processed cheese, simiar to the kind you would get at the movie theatre.
its some what loud in there when the live piano player is playing.
a couple times the service has been slow...but the food is good, and while it is a little bit more expensive than another restaurant of a similar style...it probably ends up being cheaper than what you spend at the movies. -

Ok, so I was with two friends, waiting to go to the Sex and the City movie. They are from this area, and I guess used to hang out at Rick's in high school/college or whenever. The martini list is strong, with stuff you haven't seen before, and you can really get two for one, since the martini glasses are tiny, and they leave you the shaker.
Maybe it was just because I went on a Friday night, but.. that crowd is just NOT for me. I have never seen more people who have no idea how to act or dress or like.. act like a human in one place. Basically, i felt like I was in the middle of some kind of 21-years-or-younger meat market mating dance, and just wanted to run away. Oh wait... please let me add to the 21-years-or-younger with recognition also of the 40-and-over-chubby-cougars... because god knows you can't forget older not attractive women in too-tight clothes hoping to score a college kid.
Also, our waitress was a flake and the tables were sticky. HOWEVER... the sliders were really good :) -

Have you ever met the Energizer bunny? No? Well then come meet the bartender here and you'll get the next best thing.
Came here at T-40 minutes till the previews rolled and the bartender assured us we'd have plenty of time. I ordered what a random person down the bar was having (it was a sour-apple martini) and my partner had a grey goose on the extra cold rocks.
I asked the bartender if we would have enough time if I ordered a fish and chips, and the man told me to pass on the fish and chips since there wasn't a lot of fish in it. He recommended the clam strips instead. I checked to make sure this wasn't a textbook case of up-selling, but both were the same price so I went with his suggestion. He was gone faster than bartender possible and I knew somewhere, my order was being taken care of.
The bartender zipped up and down the bar taking care of orders with a positive attitude and a dash of honesty. The man handed me a full tumbler of martini, and the grey goose was so refreshing we ordered another. 15 minutes passed fast greased by refreshing beverages and our 2 clam chowders came out followed quickly by my clam strips, fries and cole slaw. The clam strips were protein filled goodness. The clam chowder was homemade and I detected some bacon insinuation in there which made it a little salty, but still good. Fries and cole slaw were average.
The service was fast enough for me to develop a bro-mance with the bartender, the food was done well, and the drinks are mixed the way they should be. -
Review from Emily D.
Food = So So. Some items on the menu were pricey compared to the type of restaurant this is. I ordered the appetizer sliders. I wasn't very hungry but this was still filling.
Waiter Service = Our waitress didn't seem too happy. She actually was very unhappy and I was kinda scared to send back my drink that tasted like water than a Kamakazi. But I still sent it back and ordered the grape martini which was actually really good.
Drink = They specialize in martinis; I tasted a few and they were very strong and sweet. Which was fine for me. I guess I tripped them up when I ordered a Kamakazi cause it tasted horrible and wasn't what it was supposed to be.
Dunno if I'll return.. unless it's just for a martini. -

I am always big time on small time - that is why I was glad to try Rick's Cafe when my aunt threw it out as an option. It's close by to a big cinema in Randoph so it's the perfect setting to stop and grab a quick bite before catching a flick. According to their brief history located on the back of the menu, the place has been around for over 80 years! They also had a person playing the piano during dinner which was lovely.
I wanted to order traditional comfort food given the cozy setting of Rick's. The table started with cocktails which came out tall, strong and good. I ordered a light meal - a bowl of clam chowder and a half portion of chicken fingers with honey mustard sauce. Before dinner was served, fresh, warm bread was brought to the table. This was amazing and I ate three pieces (wasn't shy with the butter either!). My meal was not top notch but it didn't bother me much as I was still in a good mood from the drink and the bread. The chowder was decent but a bit salty and the half portion of the chicken fingers was a little puny.
The rest of the table, however, was very happy with half portions of baked fish which were served with your choice of a side and is preceded by a house salad. Perhaps what is best about Rick's are the prices! So few restaurants offer the half portions ( more than enough for me) which are around ten dollars. My chicken fingers cost only $4. I would be more than happy to check out the other items on the menu anytime I found myself going to this movie theater - with the variable portion size there is stil plenty of room for popcorn! -

Stopped at Ricks Cafe for the first time. When the waiter came over I ordered a coke got a diet coke then the waiter brought it back came out with another diet coke. Then my friend ordered haddock and rice, and the rice was clumped togther and very hard. I ordered a steak and asked for it medium well, it came back burnt on the outside and raw on the inside. The waiter brought it back again and it was the same way very burnt on the outside and raw on the inside. The waiter said that the owner wanted to see it. I was very disapointed to find out that the owner was sitting at the bar and did not come over himself. We were very nice about the whole situation, we were not rude in any way. The waiter never came back with the food. My friend went over to say something to the owner and he proceded to be very nasty and said well pay for the fish and the rice since you ate it. We ended up walking out still paying for one meal. An reputable place would have comoped the whole thing I have to say that was the worst restaurant experience I've ever had! EVER!. A little courtesy would have gone a long way!! This was not handled in a professional manner at all! NEVER AGAIN!!

I don't get why people always rave about this place. It's just alright to me. I've had several items on the menu. I'd have to say my favorite is the buffalo wings. But, it's not really hard to mess up buffalo wings.
I love the decor of this place and the 10 people I was with all had martini's and they were raving about how wonderful they were. So, I guess if I was rating it on alcohol I'd rate it higher. But, I don't drink so I can't help you there.
My second favorite choice of this place would be the greek salad. It's pretty filling and really good. It's a big portion, too!! The good thing about Rick's is they give out discount movie tickets for the Showcase Cinema next door..So there's a good tip. -

Was here in Boston for business and needed a place to eat. Decided to get in the rental car and drive a bit and then I came across Rick's Cafe & Pizzeria. Figured this was as good as any place to stop for a quick bite to eat.
Upon getting inside I was impressed by both the size (I figured the place would be way smaller than what it appears to be outside) and also I did like the decor. The place had nice wood floors, seats, and table and was decorated nicely with 20's - 50's Americana memorabilia. There are some places that just throw stuff on the wall just to have it there, I though the people who decorated the inside gave some thought to the placement of it. Must have spent half my dinner just looking at stuff.
But anyways, besides the memorabilia, Rick's has a Piano that you can eat at (and someone was playing that night to add to the experience) and what looks like a full martini bar and several TVs if you want to watch the game.
The waitress was nice and got me my menu right away. Order a coke and when she came back, had a Coke and a nice loaf of bread. Bread was pretty good considering I ate half the loaf by myself. Most of the stuff on the menu was your typical Americana type foods, Burgers, Steaks, Chicken, Pizza, and some seafood. most appetizers you're looking at $5 - $10 and most mains you're looking at spending between $10 - $20.
Since coming to Boston, had to have a Lobster Roll. So I ordered the Lobster Roll and deciding to be "good" went with the steamed veggies.
The order took about 10 minutes and the waitress came back with a nice large Lobster Roll, Steamed Veggies, and a Fresh Coke. I've only had Lobster Rolls twice, so by no means am I an expert, but have to say this one at Rick's was really good. Nice large pieces of Lobsters and they didn't put much mayo or extra stuff in the mix. The Lobster was definitely the star in this sandwich and most of all the Lobster tasted like it was fresh and very generous in terms of the size of the sandwich. Even the toasting of the bread added a nice taste to the Lobster Roll. The Veggies, well it was just carrots and beans and knew from first bite into the carrots that they were frozen. Oh well.. can't get everything all the time.
Overall, waitress was fast and friendly, having the piano play and all the memorabilia to look at (including a Harley hanging from the ceiling) added to a very good dining experience. I would give Rick's Cafe & Pizzeria 3.5 stars and would recommend it as solid place to eat. -

Came here on a saturday afternoon after we bought our lux level tickets in advance from the movie theatre next door. I honestly wasn't sure what to expect. The commercials make the place seem like it is a piano bar, but the hokey sign/primary colors outside make it seem like a pizza place.
We were seated in the nearly empty dining area, which was nice enough and seemed pretty middle-of-the-road and unremarkable. HOWEVER, I went to use the bathroom and saw that the bar area was filled with biker types. nothing wrong with that, it was just kind of weird.
The food was decent, I got some fried crap and my husband got a turkey club. again, unremarkable. service was prompt and friendly, but they charged us $2.25 for a glass of Nestea. srsly. I'd come here again maybe, but I'd check out some other area places first. -

This place was really good even though I just had a basic chicken sandwich. Service was great. I don't know if it's worth driving to from where I live (which is about 40 minutes w/o traffic) but it's a must if your within the area. I will go here many more times in the future.

What a cool place, you'd never even know it from the outside. They have a piano turned into a table!
On that note, I'm mildly confused by the theme. Route 66 maybe? There are all these roadsigns everywhere but yet the tables and linens are nice, all graced with a pretty candle. I dunno?
Maybe the menu has changed since other reviewers have come, but the menu is NOT small, it's five pages long plus a lunch menu. The lunch menu is much cheaper ($7-$10) whereas the dinner menu is ($8-$18).
In addition to appetizers, burgers and entrees, they have the Boston Baked Pizza which supposedly originates from a chef that Rick met in Italy. They also have a Grill menu that let's you pick a meat, sauce, and two side dishes. Pretty neat.
We got the chips and salsa with a "crock of chedder" for five bucks. It was pretty good, definitely canned cheese and jarred salsa but plenty of it.
Got a burger with bacon, cheese and BBQ sauce and it was divine.
Overall a pleasant surprise and glad we didn't go to our other choices of Outback or Bertuccis in the same plaza. -

Rick's always looks packed from the outside judging all the cars in the parking lot. Surprisingly, it was not packed at all. We were immediately seated. I had the Texan Burger which was a nice big pattie served with cheese, bacon, and barbecue sauce on a warm roll. It came with crinkle cut fries that were nice and hot. This was an excellent good burger. The service was really good. The girl never lost her smile. I'm picky about my ketchup and they had Hunt's ketchup. I wish they would lose the Hunt's and get the Heinz.

Review from Kelly M.
I was extremely surprised with how great this place was. I had driven by dozens of times whether it was on my way to the movies or a local restaurant. I never considered going in. From the outside and it's name I assumed it was well.. a cafe bordering on dineresque.
Last weekend my boyfriend and I had the same conversation of "where do you want to go to eat" what we do every weekend. We were going to the movies and were sick of the same old same old. Somehow we decided to give this a try.
Upon walking in, I was shocked. The decor was not cafeish at all. It was in fact quite nice and large. It looks so small from the outside! There was even a bar adjacent to the dining room that had a man playing the piano but he was laying piano bar type songs like Brittany spears, etc. I will definitely go back just to have drinks in the bar sometime.
Menu was about average in regards to choices. For most options they offered a whole or half portion. I got the chicken parm (a staple dish for me) I would say it was pretty good. Not the best I've ever had but then again I've had my share of chicken parm.
Bill came and it was on the pricey side, but I will definitely return. -

Went once, won't return. Went looking for a casual place but wanted to stay away from the TGIChilis type places. Had fish and chips and should have just bought some Mrs. Pauls and Ore-Ida at the supermarket. Nothing to recommend here.

I absolutely love this place! I would like to say it is a good place to go before the movies, but the drinks are sooo good (and strong), and I love the live music that they have, that I rarely end making it to the movies :-) The food is good, and I really like that you can get half portions, so you aren't stuffed when you leave (maybe just a bit tipsy from those drinks!) and your wallet isn't as light. There is a mix of people, I've never seen a "bar full of bikers" but there is some good people watching. The bartenders are great....very friendly and quick!

I never knew this place was a real sit-down restaurant. Based on the name, I thought it was literally just a pizza shop. Its actually pretty big and I think they might have a band on some nights. The lighting is a bit dark in there with a steak house, family friendly, early bird special type of atmosphere. The menu was limited...I was struggling to find something I was really craving. I ended up with the steak tips which were surprisingly tender and cooked exactly as asked. Portions are plentiful, prices are a little high for the quality, and service was just OK. Martini menu was extensive and probably the highlight of the meal.

Rick's is a decent place to go before or after the movies. I love their Gourmet Salad (not REALLY gourmet), which is enormous. It has pine nuts, gorgonzola cheese, diced onions, tri colored peppers, and whatever kind of chicken you want on top (or shrimp, etc) as well as a yummy balsamic dressing. (I usually opt for the lemon-pepper.) I have had other dishes, everything else is just ok. I believe they serve margarine with the mini loaf of bread they serve, which annoys me (I want the option of butter if I am going to splurge on bread). The service has always been good, and the place is always clean.

They call it a cafe, but its fancier than Chili's, and a little more expensive than Chili's too. I had pizza when I was there, and it was really good. Calamari was fried really well, so I'd recommend that as well. They have a bar with live piano music (on weekends, I think). Good date place.

Ewww. The food is just not that good. I've been here a few times and each time it's just a let down. The pizza we had was soggy and the cheese was lousy and greasy. We got some hot wings and they were mediocre and just fatty. What seems like ti should be simple to cook food- they fall short on. The service was okay but I just don't think this is a good place to eat overall- even if you are in a rush to see a movie next door.

Went to this place before going to the Randolph cinema. As far as location goes, it is perfect as it is located in the parking lot adjacent to the theater. Another plus was that they offer discounts for the very pricey movie tickets. Tickets were $8 per rather than $10.50 at the theater.
The main issue I had with Rick's was the food prices and very small menu. The menu consisted of about 2 pages of entree options. I selected an item from the grill section where you are allowed to pick between fish, poultry, and beef. Then you can select the cooking method, pan sear, fried, or baked. I chose the pan seared scollops witha ginger miso glaze, broccoli as a side and a side garden salad. The salad was small, and consisted of lettuce, 1 slice of cucumber, 2 grape tomatoes, onion and a couple strips of shaved carrot.
Then my meal arrived. The scollops were placed in a metal dish and then this dish was placed on a plate. There were only 8 tiny bay scollops. The side of brocolli consisted of a long square plate containing 5 sprigs of broccoli arranged in a line. The meal cost me $18. My date got grilled chicken with a bbq sauce with the same side salad I recieved and french fries as a side. Her plate consisted of 2 chicken breasts and a small bowl of crinkly cut french fries. Her meal was also $18. With the 2 blue moon beers I ordered, (a 23 oz and a 16 oz, neither filled to the top of the glass) the bill came to a total of near $50. I would not have minded paying this amount for dinner however I left the table not even feeling satisfied but still hungry. -

Great food. The bar pizza and the steak tips here are great. The service is ok. I have had better service. Also some nights there is a piano player/singer in the bar area and you can sit at the piano (i never have). The have a huge selection of martinis and the male bartender who is there all the time is great. He mad us this amazing apple pie shot the other night when we were there. Wine selection is minimal. I would check it out if you haven't been there.

Cold beer. Good drinks (Dave the bartender makes the best) Good after work crowd if you enjoy the khaki'd variety. (Jen T.....you were going to see Sex and The City and you're complaining about the 40 year old cougar crowd? that's you in 20 years....scary i know.). The food always leaves me craving for more though. That's the only thing negative I have to say about this place.
