Ricki Pollycove is a warm, professional, extremely knowledgeable doctor who listens to more than your physical complaints.
Unfortunately, until insurance companies stop demanding unpaid hours and hours of paperwork and phone calls, health care professionals will have to ask patients to submit their bills to their insurance companies more and more.

I have been seeing Dr. Pollycove since she was almost fresh out of medical school.  She continues to be the warmest, most effective and interested doctor I have.  She has successfully diagnosed and treated me for various things and is one of those rare doctors who acknowledge the contribution of integrative medicine.  She delivered my son.  Yes, she is worth it--current with medical literature, specialist in fertility and extremely knowledgeable about breast health, superlative credentials.  We can't afford to gamble on our health--ultimately it's not about cancellation policies.  Available, kind, reassuring, warm--treats the whole woman.  Favorite quote of hers:  "Behind every uterus is an interesting woman!"

Dude.  This doctor was the worst experience I have ever had.
I actually went to her for a couple years out of sheer laziness, but I am officially fed up.
1.  You have to pay her up front (think $500) for everything and then bill your insurance = pain in my ASS.
2.  You always have to wait for the doctor.  ALWAYS.
3.  She employs these young girls in her office.  You know, the ones that come in and take your blood pressure, weigh you, etc.  Who are these girls?  They aren't even registered nurses.  Yet they are the ones you have to talk to if you call in for ANYTHING.  The actual doctor is never available so you have to talk to these 20 year old SF City College students who honestly don't know shit.
4.  Fees.  I got charged $100 for missing an appt.  Ok, I missed the appt, but $100?  Really?

I would not recommend this place - there are plenty of good doctors in SF!  Try Dr. Margaret Chen, she comes highly recommended.

I am giving two stars to be nice, since I never actually got to visit Dr. Pollycove. My wallet got stolen and though I know her office has outrageous cancellation policies, I couldn't get money off my credit card or off of my atm card or from the bank with my ID. All of these options were rendered invalid. I called and left them a message twenty four hours in advance. They called back while I was at school and left a message saying they had my credit card on file so I should come in anyway. I called back on my break leaving a message saying that since I had to cancel my credit card, I still wouldn't be able to come in. No return phone call until today, while was nearly threatening saying I better come in unless I wanted to be charged. Yeah, I'll make a new appointment there. Not.

I wish there were a "no stars" review.  Pollycove is one of those self-promoting doctors that talks a good game, but is so wraped up in herself and her image as a "brilliant physician" that she forgets she's supposed to be treating you--the patient.  Of course, she charges a fortune and does NOT take insurance.  I'll NEVER return to her office.  She kept me waiting for an hour, spent 10 minutes with me and told me that I should go on estrogen (even though I told her I had a strong history of breast cancer in my family).  Pollycove=Bad Medicine.

5 stars and then some, as a doctor.

She's extremely bright, funny, intuitive, helpful, reasonable and wonderful.

0 stars for the payment portion.  You have to pay her, upfront and then bill your insurance yourself.

Why do all the BEST doctors and dentists do this?

I never got a reminder that it was time for my next appointment, something that is totally common at even the most bare bones of OBGYN offices... not sure what happened there, but I still think the doctor is great.

I will be looking elsewhere, however, to have insurance cover my needs. Bummer.

Yeah, she's expensive, but don't you want the best when you're in the stirrups?
