Love, love, love this place. I wish I could have stayed longer! I came in with a friend after dinner on Halloween before heading back to the airport and it just wasn't enough time!

Their cocktail menu is amazing...25+ pages of classic cocktails! The bartenders are very knowledgeable and will give you suggestions or whip you up something custom based on your likes/dislikes.

I had a Ginger Rogers and enjoyed every last sip! Everything is so fresh and the stock the bar with whats in season. Pretty cool.

The atmosphere was dark and classic, almost mysterious. I tend to like more modern decor; but for this place, what they have works really well.

It wasn't that crowded, but it was early, on a holiday, in downtown San Fran...the bartender said they get pretty busy during weekday happy hours and then Fri/Sat late night.

I really want to go back!

I've been quite the happy camper since this joint opened up around the corner from my abode.

The clientele is a bit trend-a-rific and I'm not certain I understand the owner's decision to make the joint appear like it's boarded-up (and, um, CLOSED) but Rickhouse has an impressive selection of liquor (that requires LADDERS!!!) and a cute little space. The bartenders know their shit, and thought the space is a little bit small, the neighborhood isn't quite as popular as some other SF hotspots.

DEFINITELY try a punch bowl, because:
1. They're ENORMOUS!
2. The punch is extraordinarily tasty. I 'experienced' a gingery concoction that cured my flu and bowled me over with a hangover all in the same night
3. They serve it in cute white China tea cups. That you can hold with an extended pinky.
4. They mix it in a fantastically-grand fashion right before it.

Be warned: the punch bowl is enormous. You want to get a group together to polish it off.

I walked right by the main entrance because the bar's facade makes it seem much larger than it really is (unless I missed an entire part of the bar)!

Fancy decor, fancy menu and interesting drinks!  Great place to congregate for a workplace happy hour and really good servers who were attentive, but not pushy!  Loves it!

What a delightful little bar!

I could go on about the great ambience of the bar, which was mellow yet classy, low key, dark lighting, lots of wood and cool decor, and cocktail waitresses dressed up in skirts with suspenders and the boys in button up shirts and vests... but really, not all of us give a shit about that. Let it suffice to say if you're looking for a cool little spot for an after work drink in the Financial District you should definitely check this place out.

Extensive cocktail list. I had the Kentucky Buck, I believe, which is very similar to the Recoil served over at Bloodhound. Doesn't have quite the same kick as the Recoil (needs more ginger beer! more bourbon!), but still quite nice. Prices are relatively reasonable, I think it was $8 a pop for the aforementioned Buck.

Kudos to our servers who were very nice and very knowledgeable about their recommendations. (Is there anything more annoying than asking a server a question and having them reply "Um... I don't know, let me ask." Jackass.)

Also a nice place to people watch, if you're into checking out all the finance folks pour in after 5 to get a little loose. If you're not so into the yuppie hangout, I wouldn't recommend this place on a weeknight. Otherwise, drink on!

I would never have thought to hang out in this area on a weekday, but I must say this spot on a leisurely Tuesday night is pretty neat. The cavernous interior is on the dark side, but I suppose that just makes the people you're talking to a bit more attractive since you can't really see them. Perhaps.

It feels like a cave, but also has a strange speakeasy sort of vibe, especially with the bartenders dressed up as they are. The place is full of co-workers getting drunk post-happy hour, friends, and couples on dates. I like the decor -- quite minimal -- but I didn't like having to yell over the noise to talk to people. Ah well. It's a bar, no?

Finally a cool new bar.
It's spacious, and they have an original drink menu.  However, they're strict on their capacity and if you get there late it's a bootch to wait in line - door man doesn't budge.

More like 3.5 stars.

Came here late night for a drink. The Martini I had was good, solid and fresh!

But what I really like about this place is the ambiance, that while it's loud, it's relaxing as almost country style music was lounging. It has a more mature crowd (30s and 40s) which makes it less chaotic.

I walked by a couple days later during the day and saw they were constructing the other half of the bar. Good because the current space is a bit cramped and can definitely use some more room.

Came here late one night after another big event. I was dressed up and couldn't change, and this place has a very relaxed vibe.

However, trying to enter, we were told that the bar was filled to capacity. (I was a bit miffed, as I wanted to go here because there wasn't a ton of people milling about, or in line trying to get in for the last 1 hour of drinking like so many popular Tenderloin area clubs.

I peered inside and there was easily enough room to allow entry, as there was nobody in the hall way in front of the bar, so you didn't have to squeeze, bump and grind to get in,  like so many other meat markets. BUt they said when someone leaves, we can enter.

I said, no, I am leaving, because that is exactly what I was trying to avoid. Standing on the corner trying to think of Plan B, a few people left, so they let us in.

It was late, but it seemed the bartenders were more interested in making conversation with single ladies than taking our drink order. And we were sitting right in front of two of them. So for you lonely bar flies, come here about midnight for some attention.

We finally got to order a Martini and a soda, $6. The bartender was non-challant about taking the money, too. Busy talking.

There is a huge wall of liquors behind the bar, a long narrow space, an area in the back, and a loft upstairs. The bathrooms use sliding wood doors that leave a large crack even when closed.

The vibe is relaxed and pretty down to earth, with little pretension or primping by the crowd.

Nice place, if you can get in and order a drink!

Well crafted drinks. Wish it werent so crowded, although I never had a problem ordering drinks from the bartenders once I figured out what I wanted. My favorite drink is the mariachi.

The drink menu is clever in presentation (like a bound newspaper), but it's a bit difficult to look through, due to the poor lighting and voluminous text. And there's no liquor or cocktail menu on the website to look at before you arrive, so you really have to waste a lot of time figuring out what you want once you get there. I think the poorly designed menu contributes to the large crowds congesting the bar area.

Great ambiance and yes, it gets totally packed at times (we had to wait briefly outside before entering until a couple people exited).  The main drink menu is huge - I mean it has a table of contents!  ;D

We were here for a work happy hour and we had a good time!  My bf had a Speakeasy beer on tap and I had the "Blame It on Rio" drink - very smooth, and yes, it's fun to watch the bartenders work their magic.  And I am so curious about those punch bowls (they are literally lined up behind the bar enticing you to order them up, good for groups of at least 2-3, I think).  Next time!

Bartenders are SERIOUS about making a good drink.  They use different kinds of ice for each drink, which makes a big difference.

The music matches the decor, old rustic country.  Not exactly my favorite, but conceptually done well.

The place is very nice. Great hang out joint in the financial district. Everyone there is very nice except for the manager. He stands right in the middle of the bar, not smiling, not taking drink orders and staring people down.

I tried to order drinks but the bartender couldn't hear me because it was very loud and packed, so I went to the service lane to place my order. The manager then immediately stared me down to get out of the service lane. Didn't ask nicely, just pointed his stubby fingers to walk back around the other side.

A bar is a bar..............dive bars, lounges, clubs, and pubs........The are all the same. It's how well your service is. The bartenders here are attentive, professional, and nice. As a matter of fact the drinks are pretty good. But......... it just takes one guy to really mess up your whole experience. Great place to hang out in the financial district if it's not crowded. The 1 star is base purely on my experience from the rude manager.

I went here with a friend after work on a Thursday and the place was packed wall to wall.  We actually had to stand outside for 5 minutes until the doorman could let us in.

We both had whiskey and water.  Seemed overpriced, I figure there was a 15-20% premium over the same brand somewhere else.

Cool looking interior, but no/horrible AC.  We were dying from the heat.  When the place is packed, the ventilation system can't cope with the bodies, especially in the back.  I'd like to go back and give it another try when it's not so crowded.

Overall, it seemed like a good place to meet new people, but a bad place to try and catch up with an old friend.

The very first time we went here, we couldn't wait to go  back.

I love the outfits the bartender/cocktail servers wear, it's so adorable.  Service is also great, Eric is the man!

I am not a whiskey drinker, but the whiskey drinks that they make here are phenomenal.

I recommend "Sex with Eric."  I love this drink!

Also, word to the wise, try to come here early, it gets quite crowded.

This bar was THE first place I wanted to go on a recent visit from LA and it did not disappoint. I came in on a Sunday and almost paced outside the door until noon on Monday.

I can see how the cocktail list can be a bit daunting, but the guys and gals that work here are more than smart enough to pick something great for you if you give them something to work with.

Steve was my guy for the two afternoons that I spent at the Rickhouse. Great guy and fun as hell to spend an afternoon drinking with. Ryan and Erick were my go-to guys on the night shift. Couldn't have been handed drinks by two nicer guys.

To address the nonbelievers: I work at a bar (a lot) like this in LA and if you're not getting drinks as fast as you think you should, here's some advice:
-Change your approach. Don't wait until your drink is more than gone to order another.
-Good drinks take time...duh.
-Be polite. Do you really think being a dick is going to get you anywhere any faster?

My biggest concern with this place was that the bathroom right by the main bar didn't lock...that's just risky business...

Having lived in both LA and SF during my lifetime, I can definitely say there are massive differences between the two and more times than not, SF won in the great city debate. But last night, SF lost a few points because they pulled an LA. Talk about Dickhouse.

I had heard a lot of great things about this Rickhouse joint from friends here in the city and was eager to go and check it out. I arrived on the early side of 5 and the place was already bumpin'. I ordered a Kentucky Buck and checked the place out. So far so good. Wish there was more seating available, but over all, good stuff.

About an hour later, my friends started arriving. First one, then 3 and the rest of the group was on their way over. We continued to order round after round of drinks as we waited, hoping a table would open up so we could try a punch bowl.

About an hour after that, the place got a lot less crowded and we finally scored a little sitting area and we were stoked. Clearly table stalking still works. As we settled in, we were going back and fourth with texts from our other friends that were now outside in a loooooong line. A line? In SF? That doesn't make any sense to me at all. Hi, LA.

After receiving texts that the line wasn't moving, one of our friends was just gonna give up and go home. With that, I finally flagged our waitress down after we had ordered a punch bowl figuring that our friends would be in any minute and explained to her what our sitch was and SHE offered to talk to the door guy and gave us the thumbs up that they were cleared to come in.

I then shot my friends that confirmation text, but they weren't let in as promised. As they continued to text us from outside the door saying that they wouldn't let them in, I finally got up to see what the problem was. My friend was standing right in front of the door and I tapped the door guy nicely on the shoulder and asked if he had been given our two friend's names and he said "yes, but that doesn't mean I'm gonna let them in any faster."

So then I ask you, what was the friggin' point of giving him the names in the first place?! Thanks to that, one of our friends did end up leaving and for the rest of us still inside, it was a definite bummer since the whole point was for us all to be together!

So here's my gripe:

A, lines are ridiculous. It's SF, come on, please don't turn into THAT city that keeps a line outside a not so busy place to make themselves look better.

B, don't offer to get someone in and then not deliver on that promise. We were ordering plenty of drinks and spending plenty of money and while I don't think that entitles me to any favors, I do think that it counts for something, especially when the offer was made to us, not by us.

C, if all of that hadn't gone down, I probably would have enjoyed the time and money we spent here, but as it was, it really soured the night.

That and one of the bathrooms doesn't have a lock, so your chances of someone walking in on your are pretty high. Good times, you've been warned.

Solid. I like this place better than Bourbon and Branch, not QUITE as much as the Alembic in the Haight (then again I might be biased because I live near the Alembic).

The 28 page drink menu is fun at first, but becomes tedious after a while. I prefer the Alembic's strategy of putting their whiskey/liquor/beer selection on a giant chalkboard. It lets you sit and enjoy your drink, casually scanning it from afar musing as to what you want next, instead of fumbling through a unwieldy binder of paper trying to find if they have a certain Bourbon.

The prices at Rickhouse are decent in my opinion - cocktails run between 8-10 dollars (maybe about 1-2 dollars less than I've seen at this type of establishment). That said, a few of their cocktails seemed slightly lacking in "texture" i guess you could call it... Mostly though, the drinks were great, and we did enjoy splitting a giant punchbowl.

I would definitely go back. Prefer this style to Bourbon and Branch reservations-and-password schtick.

Less theatrical more badass contemporary of B&B. I went for the first time Thursday night to scope the place out and was so impressed by the ambiance, design factor, and the JJ Russel with the cherry heering that I brought two of my friends back the very next night. We tried just about everything on the short menu, and in summary, loved it all. Still have to come by again for the Sao Paolo punch bowl - they use Sagatiba, not Leblon, in their cachaca drinks.

The "Pleasant Evening" with cassis and the "Restaurateur" with fernet and chartreuse provide a memorable experience.

2 words: PUNCH BOWL! It's delicious.  Guess it's more of a girl's thing since they serve it in like these white tea cups w/ a ladle!

Crowd is def. young and very financial district business type.
Be warned that there might be a line out the door just to get in.  It's small in there and can get quite crowded.
Too bad they don't serve food, b/c I would def. stay longer if there were food. Oh and it's quite loud in there, so it's not much of a sit down and chat and have a few drinks sort of place.

Stepping inside Rickhouse feels like you're stepping back in time. Part saloon, part prohibition era speakeasy (all contained inside what feels like a giant whiskey barrel), the atmosphere is perfect for a night of classic cocktails. No strange blue colored drinks but a classy atmosphere with perfectly fitting cocktails.

I went to Rickhouse with a group of co-workers for drinks on a Friday evening around 6pm. The place was completely packed when we got there, but we were directed to the back bar which had some standing room (and we managed to snag a low table in the middle of the floor).

I started with a Bella Fragolla, which was one of their specialty cocktails that evening with strawberry infused vodka, basil, lemon juice, club soda, etc. The flavors were subtle and the bartenders were amazing to watch. Most of all, I was taken by the fact that they have at least 3 different types of ice (large cubes for some cocktails, crushed for others, giant single blocks for on the rocks drinks).

Second round of drinks that evening, we got their full cocktail menu, which is like a work of art or a medieval document. Leather cover and thin parchment pages that detailed the story of their drinks and the Rickhouse philosophy. It took a while to go through, but I saw a drink called a Youngblood, which had plum infused cognac and was the best Sidecar I've had in my entire life. I was stunned by this drink: the perfect flavors, the spice in the back of the drink and everything that mingled so well together.

I will come back for the amazing atmosphere and that fantastic Sidecar. I just wish there were a couple windows in the place.

I can't give higher praise for the bartenders. Their skill is awe inspiring. The drinks are numerous and each well made. The concoctions are creative and unique. Punch bowls are good, maybe not as highly touted in other reviews, but good.

Only downside not much seating or table space. The punch bows are easy to order, finding a place to put them is a whole different matter.

overall a good place to be.

Yummy cocktails, full house, cranky bartenders.

Girlfriend and I stopped there for a drink at 5 PM on a Friday before going to an art opening. When we walked in, the house was p-a-c-k-e-d.  Full of mostly 20-something office workers, pretty hip in their own minds. We get through the first wall of defense and order drinks from the back bar. The cocktails we order were yummy -- something with vodka, grapefruit juice, and basil. Small problem -- they do not take credit cards for anything less than $20. I offer to put $20 on my credit card for $12 worth for 2 cocktails (that's $8 tip folks!) No, can't do. So I ended up using the in-house ATM ($2.50 charge + $2 jealousy fee from my bank.) At the end of the round, I spent the same $20 and the bartender got $15...

We finished up our drinks pretty quickly as we could not really hear each other all that well and went on by our business. I can respect a business for making their profits on bottom prices and high customer volumes but it does not make for a pleasant customer experience. Next.

Outside of Cheater's marathons and watching midgets giving other midgets piggy back rides, nothing makes me happier than a quality, hand crafted cocktail. Rickhouse comes from a long line of mixed drink connoisseurs (B&B, Rye to name a couple), so it goes without saying they know the special sauce to make a bar like this work.

I've been here for drinks on almost every occasion you can think of. During rookie training camp on Friday/Saturday night, happy hour drinks with the post-work crowd, weekend day drinking, etc... After experimenting with the different days/times of the week to have an enjoyable time, the clear and present winner (IMO) is during the day on the weekends. You don't have to deal with the Marina DBs acting like idiots, you don't have to wait in crazy lines as working professionals try to slam a Manhattan before heading home to the 'fam, and generally, you'll just have a better experience overall.

All of their drinks are fantastic and reasonably priced. $7 or $8 for a mixed drink like the ones they sling is a total steal. If you have some time to kill, take a look through their massive cocktail library. It has the look and feel of a periodical from yesteryear, and it's got about as much information as an encyclopedia. You'll discover some stuff you probably didn't know was even on the menu at all... including the punch bowls! There are four different kinds if memory serves me correctly, and unless you had the time to thumb through the book 'o crunk, you'd probably never find 'em.

I'm a pretty huge fan of the decor inside this place as well. They've done a pretty good job of making it feel like you're slugging moonshine inside an old western saloon. Add a few shootouts at high noon on Kearny and the occasional wacky bar brawl, and it'd be a drinking establishment right out of a John Wayne movie.

The funniest thing I heard during happy hour was someone asking Nish if he had brought his own punch bowl. Yes, imagine him toting in a large white ceramic bowl along with 6 ceramic punch cups, a ladel, a giant block of ice with fruit frozen inside, and then proceed to ask the bartender to supply a spiked punch concoction for us. Sorry to say, this place tends to attract the ditzy and the douchey, along with the cool and casual. But, the crowd is friendly enough, and the bartenders are great.

The space is awesome, modeling itself after warehouses that store barrels of whiskey. There are two bars, two levels, and bathrooms that are apparently too hard to figure out how to open if you get sloshed on some of their fantastic hard cocktails. I suspect the pair who shared an entire punch bowl next to us may have fallen victim to getting "locked in." Remember how you closed the door after yourself when you first went in, people!

If you're a fan of cucumber infused tequila, get the Campos Cooler. It's especially perfect during hot Indian Summer nights!

Hello Gatsby Bar!

Let me just start off saying that I'm a sucker for a guy who looks like he just stepped out of The Great Gatsby.  All the bartenders here are dressed up like they are from the 1930's and look so dapper.  From my experience - all the staff here is very nice - even when it gets super hectic during happy hour (thank goodness!).

They have a great selection of drinks and I love trying out all the different concoctions that they come up with.  The drinks are strong and are worth every penny.

I know this bar gets super crowded - but do give this place a chance!! It's a fun place to grab a drink or two..or three with your friends.

I came here for the first time not knowing what to expect and I was floored by how much I liked this place. It was my friend's birthday and also a Friday night. We arrived at 6:30 snagged a killer parking spot two blocks away and were shocked that the place was completely packed. Once we elbowed our way from the front of the bar to the darker other room we were able to snag a standing room table. As I peered around the two-level dimly lit bar I had a flash of Pirates of the Caribbean meets Frontier Land. Even though the place was packed the waitress came and got our drink order almost immediately.

Once we got our drinks I realized why this place was so crowded. The fruity goodness was amazing. We order the Berry something with Vodka. The fruit was fresh and tangy but the drinks were not sweet and girly-like. They had a definite kick to them.

Once we were able to scoop up one of the highly coveted tables we were able to order one of the infamous punch bowls. We got the San Paulo, which was so fresh that it felt like the fruit was picked that morning by a farmer named Teddy.

I would go back there in a heartbeat. I would love to check it out during the week when there would be less people. The only problem I found was the limited number of seated tables and the fact that for some reason people want to congregate in the front bar which makes getting in and out a little difficult.

The bartenders here don't mess around. Truly well made drinks.  Beautiful crowd. Nuff said.

I have been frequenting this place in the last few months. It always seems to be crowded at happy hour. Even at 4PM on a Wednesday. The cocktail selection is amazing. They also have a good beer and wine selection. Since the cocktails are handcrafted, artistic and complex, they do take a bit of time to prepare. I really do enjoy the back bar. They even have a cocktail server. She is really sweet and helpful. She also promptly fixed the wobbly table. Plus she had a fun sense of humor. It is a perfect place to meet my working fidi friends.

Every time I visit San Francisco I leave with bar envy. Rickhouse is one of the places that inspired it this go-around. When you walk in you just feel sexier by virtue of being there. The lighting is very dim, the atmosphere is lively, and the walls are lined floor to ceiling with all sorts of spirits the bartenders use to make the most delicious cocktails.

I personally went with an Old Cuban, which is a lot like a mojito, but with sparkling wine and in the form of a martini (no ice, served up). After my first sip I completely understood the cocktail revival that is happening across the states now. Since Denver is in the middle things move toward us from both coasts and we get trends a little later. This is one I cannot wait for. In the meantime, I've memorized what goes into the Old Cuban and I'll be trying to perfect it at my home bar.

Hot, sunny day? Check
Rickhouse open? Check
Prime people-watching window seat available? Check

Best sunny afternoon drink? Kentucky Buck.

That drink is PERFECT. It's like bourbon-infused liquid strawberry sorbet with a hint of gingery fizz...you'll never feel guilty for drinking a couple of them in the middle of the day...then again, who ever feels guilty about drinking?

We've been trying very hard to patronize this place since we work right down the street, and when we finally were able to get in, we quickly understood that it was a mistake.

If you can get past the obnoxious guys at the door, you still have to contend with the obnoxious atmosphere inside.  You'll be made to wait for your drink much longer than it takes to drink one, and you'll be waiting in the company of all the people you usually try to avoid...

As far as I'm concerned the place should be called  "Rick's Out House" instead of Rickhouse.  The place stinks.  Absolutely NOT the place to go for a quick after-work drink.  Can't imagine why they've put it smack in the middle of the Financial District.

Joe knows good bourbon.

At least I think the bartender's name was Joe.  After all that bourbon... who knows?

I love the look of this place.  From the street you can't help but be drawn to that gorgeous wood, and it just keeps going on that way once your inside.  Very well done, especially the barrel planks on the ceiling.  The doorman told me the history of the wood, and when I remember what it is, I'll update this review. Something to do with Ireland, I think.

I had the misfortune of coming here on a Friday a few hours after work.  Way too crowded, too loud to have an easy conversation, lots of people bumping into you.  Suits, suits and more suits.  Suits carrying around printouts of their powerpoint.  Not my scene.

A nightmare to get a drink, and priced a bit more than I care to pay for well.  We decided to have one drink, then move on.  Rickhouse had other plans for us apparently.  There is a $40 minimum when you use a card because "it keeps us bartenders moving faster."   The bartender was cool about it though and when we told him we *really couldn't stay* and were sorry we were unaware of their policy, he let us slide with the two drink charge.
Not in any hurry to go back though.

I was fortunate enough to spend a couple of nights exploring this cocktail bar. As I walked up I was struck by how courteous the bouncer was I almost thought of him as more of a door man. He was pleasant and we chatted briefly.

Once inside I was struck by the dark and cavernous feel of the bar. My companions quickly pointed out the special touches like the ceiling which is reminiscent of a whiskey barrel.

Although the cocktails are well crafted this bar lacks the pretense of other mixologist dens providing an atmosphere of quality and ease.

I've been excited about Rickhouse for months, so when my group agreed to check it out, I was giddy.

Thinking it would be very similar to Bourbon & Branch, I was pleasantly surprised by the differences. No passwords, house rules or reservations required. In fact, Rickhouse is more of a free-for-all once the clock strikes 5PM. Once you're carded at the door, you're whiskey'ed away to another dimly lit land, complete with 2 bars, minimal seating and a small, open mezzanine with 360 views of the commotion below.

Rickhouse is a packed house so if you find seating, nab it. Our large group lucked out completely and were able to secure seating up in the mezzanine. We shared tables and chairs with a friendly, even larger group and proceeded to order the Pimm's Punch Bowl. Big win. The refreshingly tart punch came in a large frosted glass bowl, with matching cups and easily served the eight of us three rounds a piece.

It's also worth noting that our cocktail server was on point. Never fazed by drink orders literally being yelled from every which way, she would smile, lean in closer to hear and go up and down the mezzanine stairs carrying an always full tray like only a pro could pull off. We were smitten.

A few rounds later (you must try the blackberry bramble -- yes, same as Bourbon & Branch), and we were still under the spell of this place. With the skylight providing a fresh breeze that only those upstairs were privy to, we spread out in our space and watched as the people below swarmed like bees to honey at the bar(s).

Clearly the current "place to be" as evidenced by the crowds, Rickhouse brings a new level of service, attention to detail, and charm to the bar scene.

Impressive selection of whiskeys/bourbons/ryes.

Drinks were solid.

Crazy packed. Not sure about the crowd - it was pretty bad when I went. A group of what seemed like college-aged boys most definitely hit on my group of friends more than once. Insert eye roll.

Most confusing menu I've ever seen (it's printed on the world's thinnest paper, is excessively wordy and is about 40 pages long. No joke) Major fail on this one - nobody wants to read a novel about booze at a dark bar, no matter how "in the know" and speakeasy-esque you're trying to be.

Clearly they pumped quite a bit of money into the decor. It's got nice, tall ceilings and the wall of booze is quite the attractive display.
