So it's small and more pricey than my 24 hour membership was.

NOT a problem since it is 4 blocks away from my home, the staff is SUPER friendly, I have all the cardio machines and weights I could need, and it's CLEAN without those random downtown bums wearing jeans and stuff. For some reason no matter what time I go its full, and only once have I left cuz people were OBVIOUSLY ignoring the time limit postings (on every wall may i add) but look, once out of how many times? Not so bad.

Plus you don't have to "pay" for towel service and I have a handy dandy key ring-membership card to keep on my keys. I also like the little cubbies for storing your extra sweater in when you don't need/want a locker, and the hand spray and sanitizer all over. Yay!

My wife and I have been working out here for over a month now and we like the place a lot. We were a bit hesitant at first but after checking out the space and finding out that they not only have parking in the back, albeit it six or seven spaces, but they also have a few spots reserved across the street in the pay lot, which you don't have to pay for.
The cardio area suits our needs...about ten treadmills, three bikes, a few PreCor machines and five stairmaster-ish machines. This area also has the weight machines (smith machine, leg-press, ab machines...), so it's a bit cramped but overall it's fine.
The weightroom is also small but it too fits the need.
Only down side is despite the signs asking people to remember the 30 minute limit, a few people routinely stay on too long even if people are obviously waiting. Also, a few people (not the same mentioned above) don't grasp the "let others work in while you use the machine" concept.
Very convenient, polite staff and clean. The people who use it need to learn gym-etiquette but all in all, a good spot to work out.

I have such mixed feelings about the Richmond Y. Let's break it down:

    :)
    -Local
-the crowd is a bunch of normal folks, so I can work out and not feel judged if I'm tomato red
-A fair variety of classes (for a Y, not for a regular gym)
    -Friendly Staff
-Hot tub (I've never used it because all I think of is bacteria water but It's nice to know it's there)
-Often not crowded, always can find a locker for my stuff

    :(
-Expensive for what you get. You can buy a 3 year membership to 24 hour fitness for 300 bucks versus the cost of this gym (and I have financial aid to boot and it's still expensive!)
-Hours sort of suck. On the weekends they don't open until 7:30 and close at 7pm. That seems really early to close for a gym, especially compared to other location
-Hours on the weekdays are crappy too, they don't open early enough for me to go before work/class unless I choose to shower there which I wouldn't do because, again, bacteria totally freaks me out

Affordable, open late, tons of group classes, and unpretentious - everything I ever wanted from a gym. They have a rooftop garden where you can stretch or do free weights (you just have to bring the equipment back where you got it, duh), dry sauna, whirlpool, cardio room and did I mention a great variety of group classes with great instructors. The class sizes are small, I attended a spinning class with just 4 members there! Awesome and roomy!

After having the misfortune of beloning to 24Hour Fitness, this YMCA is a welcome change.

To expensive I can get a membership at 24 hour fitness for half the price. Also I found out if you decided to leave you have to give them 30 day notice. What is this a apartment rental. I had a jop change and had to give up my membership had to pay a another month, should have read the small print. That is alot of money when your not using it.

I liked their cardio room. There are plenty of machines and only a handful of people, so no fighting over anything. This location offers clean towels to use and has a jacuzzi. I am not a fan of the intense chlorine smell coming from the jacuzzi though. It reeks all the way in the locker rooms too (which is right next to it).

The Richmond YMCA is my alternative gym to the Stonestown YMCA, When i come here its usually cuz of convenience or to work out with my good ole buddy Mike.  This YMCA is closer to where i live but the facilities are smaller than my usual Stonestown YMCA. This YMCA is another example of a great community based gym where anyone can come in a workout. Being only a member of the Stonestown YMCA, I still need to pay 5 bucks to get in each time. Best thing to do go workout with a buddy and use one of his/her guest passes ;).

Their weight room is tiny but still has what you need to put in a good workout. There are mirrors all over the place so you can watch your every bicep curl and check yourself out all you want ;). My only complaint is that the room itself can get a little stuffy. They have two fans and windows but with too many bodies in there it can get bad. The Cardio/Machine area is very big with a lot of updated machines and a nice little area for you to do some ab work and stretching. Time to get in shape for Summer people!

    Go Workout!

I love coming here! The price of membership is extremely reasonable, and the gym is NEVER crowded. There's usually parking in their little lot, or they offer parking passes for the lot across the street. Also, the Thursday Zumba class with Cynthia is the best! I look forward to this class every week :) I just wish she taught more classes there during after work hours.

The only thing keeping me from giving this YMCA a 5-star rating is that I just wish they would have more dance classes during after work hours or weekends. There are at least 3 classes I would like to try out, but can't make it since I don't get home until at least 5:15.

Very friendly staff and extremely helpful in answering any and all questions you have about the facility and the different summer camps/classes they offer for the kids.  After picking mine up at the end of the day 'pretty pooped' would be the sum of it, and was happy to yap about all the activities experienced throughout the day.

I would have loved to give a 5 star rating just based on all they offer and do with the kids at their summer day camp, but there was unfortunately a mishap with the afternoon snacks one day in which I learned that peanut butter was given to a child with a peanut allergy.  Now that's something they should've never messed up on.  With so many kids nowadays with peanut/nut allergies why would they even offer these with so much health risk at stake?  Is it that hard to keep a facility peanut/nut free?  Tisk.

Friendly, small, surprisingly adequate and dense, in terms of the variety of workout you can get done here, YMCA.

But no one seems to ever be using the machines at the Richmond Y. It almost feels awkward sometimes to be working out because no one who goes to this particular YMCA works out. I guess it's cooler to just sit around and stare rather at a gym than working out. Probably some Richmond hipster trend.

It's a true community center. I never have to wait for machines. The classes are awesome. ZUMBA!

I am moving soon, so I don't mind telling you about this great little Inner Richmond gym. If it gets too crowded, you did not hear it from me!

aHHHhhhh I LOVE this place!! After only working out at ridiculously crowded college fitness centers, this place is like a breath of fresh air.  After living close by here for a year, I decided to join.  I always told myself that I would never join a gym because I hated the crowds, the working out indoors, etc, but I realized that I needed a routine that was not dependent on the weather.

I joined this Y and immediately got hooked on their spin classes! Heidi (Mondays), Jesse (Wednesdays), and Maria (Sundays) are AMAZING.  They really kick your ass, but it's quite a fun ass kicking.  The classes get full at certain times of the year (after New Years for example), but everyone always gets a bike.

Give this place a chance. You'll love it too.

I would definitely give this place a 3.5 if I could. Love that this is a bare bones gym (i.e., no TVs on most of the cardio equipment, no juice bar in the lobby, no logo water for sale, etc).  I also love that I can visit the Y every day for a week and hardly ever, IF ever, catch a single LuLu Lemon wearing lady.  T-shirts and basketball shorts (on ladies!) are the norm here.  Friendly front desk staff and the price is reasonable.

My only beefs: the space is pretty cramped, I've never been able to locate a jump rope, there isn't a ton of air circulation on hot days (people here seem to embrace natural body odors rather than slather on deo) and the classes aren't very challenging for people that are already in decent shape.

But overall - if you aren't into a "scene" at the gym and you don't want to be locked into an expensive gym membership, this is your place!

It is close to my house which is a plus. I never have an issue getting on one of the Life Cycles. I love the TV that is on them.
    Pretty affordable.
The staff is friendly. Lots of classes to choose from. Pretty clean facility. .
I like the fact that there is a sauna and a jacuzzi. It is not a Meat Market.

Now the bad news: there are ants in the women's locker room. I think it is because someone has been storing food in their locker plus eating in there. I hate ants! The management is working on that. Also, I do not like the fact that some members do not sit on towels while in the sauna..I do not want to sit in someone else's sweat.

The Richmond YMCA definitely feels like a community, or dare I say home.  Being a Richmond district native, I went to the Y as a snotty nose little kid for year long preschool (don't think exists any longer).  As a post collegiate, I went to the Y for exercise with the intention to lose those pesky pounds I gained in college.  For a few years, I neglected the Y and joined and worked at other gyms whose names will remain nameless.  I've since come to my senses and now I'm back with a vengeance...going pretty regularly with my boyfriend.  Staff is friendly.  Other patrons are respectful and you definitely feel like there are no judgments.  Machines are standard and I feel like I never have to wait more than five minutes (if even) for anything.  I love the treadmill's little read out where it simulates your run around a track--it entertains me when I don't have my music or magazine.

I go and see high school acquaintances, my best friend's uncle and women that know my mother--you can't get more close to home and community than that.  Even if it wasn't a hop, jump, skip away from where I live, I would still consider going...it's that friendly and warm.

Not into seeing your entire high school at the 24 on Ocean?  Me neither.

This Y is slightly weak but perfect for me because I just need the basics.  If I'm going to the gym, it's strictly just to do my thing and get the f out of there so I can engage in slightly more exciting activities like reading a book or going out.    Richmond Y has the general goods, a main room with about 20 cardio machines and some basic weight machines - just enough for no major lines,  2 mini rooms for stretching & ab stuff & whatever else you feel like doing in there, 1 medium sized free weight room with all the dude stuff (bench press and etc), plus 2 group exercise rooms, oh and a lil hot tub.

Do NOT come to this gym if you're trying to scoop a hottie.  The guys that go here tend to be in either in the little asian boy middle school range or the high-waisted sweatpants grandpa age.  The upside is that there are no meatheads to bother you by oogling at you til you feel uncomfortable or annoying you by asking to "work in".  However, there IS this weird germaphobe lady that comes in with a camoflauge print hat with ear flaps and rubber kitchen gloves.. siiiiiiiiiiiiiick work out gear.

See ya there, you can use one of my guest passes!

i recently switched from the presidio Y to the richmond Y and am so happy with my decision. i love this gym. it's not huge but well organized and never too crowded. i feel like the size suits the amount of members very well. it actually looks much smaller from the outside but they have a few floors of group exercise rooms AND a rooftop garden where you can stretch. i'm not much of a hot tub person (germ thing) but the hot tub there looks very clean and even *i* would consider getting a soak in one of these days. i even started keeping my swimsuit in my gym bag just in case the mood hits me.

they offer quite a few classes which i haven't tried yet but will definitely check out in the near future.

i only live five blocks from it but i think they have like 10 spots in the back and also parking passes for the lot across the street.

also, peet's donates coffee sometimes which is just plain delightful.

You know you may have to reevaluate your life when people only know you by your addictions and poor life choices.

I moved into my neighborhood in February. In the span of four months I have managed to really be a "regular" at few different establishments.

First, there was Peets. "Medium coffee Rebecca?" Awwww. Sweet right? Makes you feel a bit fuzzy.

Then... the bar. "Hey, Rebecca. Haven't seen you in a couple days, whats new?". Okay, kinda sweet. Like Cheers right? Everyone loved that show. People sing the theme song in hopes they too will go somewhere where everyone knows their name. It gave me that "neighborhoody" feel that I was looking for.

Then.... 711. "Camels, right. Saw you crossing the street, got them out". F* Me!!! That is where I draw the line. Not cool.

Caffeine, booze, smokes. So, for personal satisfaction, health... and some vanity, I have attempted to change this. Well, actually mostly for principle. I cant be known in the hood, for my three bad vices. So, I have joined the gym!!!! Not ready to cut back on the booze or coffee, but perhaps its about time to kick the smokes, ehhhh??

I joined the Y last week. And guess what??? I think the people at the front recognize me! Next time I go in I am going to ask them if they could say "Hi Rebecca" when I walk in. You know ... for principle.

I don't need a big place to work out. I need the basics. 30 minutes of cardio and 30 minutes to blast my pecs. This place is small... yes. But is perfect for me, as I don't get overwhelmed. I go a bit later in the evening and have never had to wait for a machine.
I am not a fan of commitment..... so isn't it perfect that I don't have to sign a contract!? I could quit at any time, but I think I am in it for the long haul. I even cut back on the smoking. My 711 buddy said he missed me the last couple days!!! Was wondering where I was.

The YMCA has what I look for in any neighborhood establishment. Friendly, small and familiar. It feels like a little community. I had an insta-connection with it. I used to dream about going to the bar all day at work. Now, I dream about going to the gym as soon as I get off..... then to the bar. Its a stones throw away from my house. The closer the gym the more likely you are to go regularly, I am just lucky that such a great little gym is the one closest to me.

I have officially just added a new addiction that people in the hood can know me by...... and it's one that won't cause a slow and pain-full death!!!

My membership at Cole Valley expired, and although I went quite often, I'm getting a little too lazy for that commute.  So, I signed up with the Y that's just a few blocks from home.  Nothing too fancy, decent enough weights, but a couple of really great perks that make a public gym so much fun.
    1) Dry Sauna:  Oh my, let the Jewness come out!  Now I can officially say that I'm going for a schvitz!
    2) Hot Tub: Wow...seriously...just re-circumcise me, slap me on the ass, and say Mazel Tov!  Now I can have a soak and complain about the world and how "oi, i'm so tired!"
    3) Old people galore!  When I was cursing the gods while trying (unsuccessfully I might add) to get some muscles on me, an old dude next to me was either really enjoying himself or about to drop dead from a cardiac.  Maybe my yearly CPR and first-aid classes will finally pay off.  I can't wait!

I do not like this gym.  It's over-priced, crowded, small, too few machines, classes suck unless you're 85 years old (rock 'n' low anyone) and it is OUTRAGEOUSLY expensive for what you get.

I cursed this place every time I went until one day I walked up and there was a long long line of hungry elderly folks waiting for their boxes of free food.  So yeah, the gym sucks, but they do provide some valuable services to the community.  What has 24 fitness done for anyone lately but try to sell you worthless overpriced vitamins.

ALSO, it's 5 blocks from my house so that means I work out often and dont have to drive or park to do it.  that's a huge bonus.

I think it's more of a 2.5 star place, but you cant do halvsies so I gave them the benefit of the extra half star for their good citizenship.

Yeah, also the staff are super friendly and helpful... ok now I feel like I dick.  maybe this place isn't so bad after all.

We LOVE the children's dance program! Marian Roth-Cramer is the instructor and she is truly a gift to the children! My kids are 4 and 7 and they both love dance at the YMCA. My 4 year old had difficulty separating in other programs but Ms Marian worked her magic! The girl is now dancing around the house and happy to go to class! YAY! The kids in the program are a wonderful sweet bunch of kids too! The the annual performance is amazing, you will be shocked at what your kids can do. Overall a must if you are considering dance programs. This one is low stress, the kids learn a ton and have a really great time. Check it out!

Sweetest treadmills ever. It has a dock that lets you plug your iPod in and use the touch-screen on the machine to scroll through your playlists.

I joined this gym straight away without really thinking it through, however. Plus side: they have great equipment, a super nice staff and I have never had to wait for cardio machines or been hit on by skeezy muscle men.

Down side: I have not been hit on by skeezy muscle men. I forgot that one reason I've loved going to big name gyms in the past was because there was always that potential to meet hot guys.

I'm a little bummed in this regard, but at least I feel comfortable enough to break a good sweat at the Y and go makeup-less with little worry.

I've been working out at YMCAs for 25 years - I've never had a membership to a private gym for any real length of time.  I like the Richmond Y, it is convenient, inexpensive and friendly.   Good if you're like me and hate group exercise and only want your cardio and your cybex and to be left the hell alone.  Not so good if want stripper pole aerobics a la Crunch or are trying to find a  date. The only drawback to me is that the hours are really short.

(Edit - I should say it's inexpensive for us since we have a family membership, so if you cost it out it's less per person.  If you are single you should join with a buddy and call yourself a family.  75/2=37.50 vs 55.)   However, if you're under 26 or over a certain age, you can go for around 40 a month.

I have decided to put some spice into my regular workout routine and take a class.  My friend, Michelle, teaches Thursday night boot camp at this Y, and pulled some strings to get me in.
Her class was really fun.  And it thouroughly kicked my ass like boot camp should.  We did sit ups, push ups, squats and running exercises.  But, what I really liked was the incorporation the step and the jump rope.  The class lasts an hour, and proved to be a great workout.  Sure to leave you a sweaty mess.  That's a good thing.

I am actually thinking about quitting my gym and joining this YMCA.  Its so close to my place, and the staff is really friendly.  It is a bit small though, and I can't stand to wait for a machine.  But, they will let you have a few free passes to try the place out before you make any serious commitment to join.

I'm a YMCA girl.  I drink water when I work out, no $5.50 soyhummuscarrotsproutacaiberry smoothies. No fancy snotty "health clubs" for me. And this place is anything but that. I can strech, get on an eliptical and do some weights, I don't really ask for more.  It's more of a 3.5 star place, but I'll give 'em the benefit of the doubt.

It's got a pretty basic set up of cardio and weight machines, there isn't an extensive selection but it does the trick, and plus I haven't ever had to wait for a machine. There's also a sauna and hot tub (old person stew), which I have been a little scared to try.

The place in general is cramped (not a lot of space or a good room for stretching, which is kind of a bummer), but hey! they offer a $39/month deal for young adults (under 25), so I can't really argue, as the price is great for how often I take advantage of it (let's say 3 times a week, although lately it's been more like 1 or 2...argh). I haven't tried the classes yet but I hear they're good, too.

It's cheap, in the neighborhood, and the staff is super nice, and that's pretty much all it's got going for it. The combined cardio/weight machine room is pretty cramped and the free weight room is fairly small, too.

I would love for another option to open up in the Richmond that wasn't Curves. The USF Koret Center has a pretty limited radius of people allowed to join, and there's a wait list for the Jewish Community Center. I'm amazed that the Sunset's got more gym options than us.

I have belonged to several YMCA's in other cities over the years, and joining here was no different.  I love the Y because I feel so much more comfy around a group of senior ciitzens than around power lifters and women in makeup working out.  I go during the day, so there's never a crowd, and the staff is really friendly.  They've also got a TON of classes to take (I take one of the many yoga classes offered).  Their monthly rates are decent if you have someone to join with you (my husband and I pay $75), and their personal trainer rates are okay.  If you buy a package, you can get in for as little as $40/session.  I am a compulsive gym joiner who is now slowly becoming a gym GOER thanks to the Y.

    Now get singing...Y...M...C...A..

Such a great place for families. The yoga classes are great for me, and the Children's Dance classes are just awesome for kids. My daughter has been taking a preschooler class for the past 3 years and she has loved it. She started out at age 3 very shy and apprehensive, but the teacher, Marian Roth-Cramer, skillfully brought her out of her shell. Ms. Marian  is truly an amazing teacher. Kind, funny, respectful of kids' different personalities and skills. Her preschool classes are just plain fun with lots of dance through play and pretend. She also has a program where older kids volunteer to help out in the younger kids' classes, and the older girls are such great role models for my daughter. The Children's Dance program at the Richmond Y is truly wonderful, and I can see our family staying with it for many years to come.

A small, but good place to work out. No B.S, just exercising. The staff and people there are really friendly and nice. It doesn't feel all cramped up and stuffy like some other gyms... It's nice if you're into a more laid-back environment.

This is a good gym, the only thing it's lacking in is space. Seriously, the people behind the counter and all the trainers are really nice, they'll even make an effort to remember your name if you go regularly. The pilates classes (mat, no reformer here) I've taken were very good, as was the one cardio class I took. There is a high population of seniors here, but they really work out! I haven't utilized the showers so I can't speak on that, but the bathrooms are pretty good, basic but good. There is a daycare on site, a separate free weights room, and the cardio room has all the machines: eliptical (two different kinds) stairmaster, both kinds of stationary bikes (which recently got T.V.s), one rowing machine, and treadmills (10 or 12 I think). There is no real stretching area which is why I took off one star; the stretching area is just a bit of space in the cardio room which only fits 3 people max. Also there is not a lot of parking in the back, only 11 spaces, and lately people have been doing this annoying thing where they idle in the parking lot entrance waiting for someone to leave so they can take their spot. All said, its a friendly, if a bit cramped for space, basic little Y.

My daughter has been a student with the Richmond District YMCA dance program since she was 5.  She is now 12.  As Household Plus members she has been able to take as many classes as she would like for one nominal monthly fee.  As a beginning, intermediate or advanced dancer, there have been several classes to choose from at each level.  She has taken Creative Movement, Jazz, Ballet, Tap, Musical Theatre, and Pointe.  She is usually enrolled in about 3 classes each school year because she loves it so much, it is so affordable, and she makes so much progress as a dancer.
Most of the classes are taught by the creator of the program, Marian Roth Cramer (Ms Marian) who has performed in, choreographed and directed dance companies for 32 years.  Her approach is very positive.  She wants kids to enjoy dance and the creative process, while developing their skills.  She also wants kids to have performance opportunities, so she offers several during the year, including a Winter Tour where kids who choose to participate can perform an original ballet to SF schools.
The classes culminate in May with a wonderful Recital.  The fee to participate in the Recital is minimal compared with other dance programs, yet the production is as impressive.  This is due in large part to Ms Marian, who with her skill and creativity choreographs for most of the company of up to 100 dancers plus provides all of the costumes by reworking those from her large collection.  The result is a visually beautiful, charming, and impressive show.
The other dance teacher is Monique Brown, also a professional dancer.  She has been with the Y program for several years and teaches wonderful Jazz dance classes for kids as well as Adult Ballet there.
This program has movement classes for many ages and interests.  Starting with a unique Infant/Toddlers with caregiver class, students graduate to the PreK classes then onto more structured technique classes. Where else can you dance from 6 months old to 13 years?
The Richmond District Y dance program is entering its 10th year at the Y and has been a huge formative influence on my daughter.  She has grown to become a beautiful dancer, confident on stage;  she has made great friends; she has learned to work as a team member;  and she has absorbed the ideals of  hard work when helping others through the many volunteer opportunities provided her at the Y.  I only wish she did not have to graduate out of the dance program after 8th grade.

freshman year i mooched off the free fitness center on campus.
sophomore year i pretended to mooch off the free gym at parkmerced.
this year,  it's time for my semi-out-of-shape ass to actually join a gym.

back in the day when i graduated early from high school & had nothing better to do in between my shifts at jamba, the santee ymca in san diego had my heart. when i moved to the inner richmond i decided to join again because (a) it's cheaper than 24 hour and (b) it's super close to my house. they have all the equipment i need & i've only had to wait on a machine once. the employees are extremely nice and the facilities are super clean.

plus, no men have tried to hit on me in the middle of my work out. the fact that most of the other members are over 50 or under 15 is great because i don't like talking to anyone when i'm working out. no matter how good looking you are (or think you are), i will ignore you. hell, i don't even go to the gym with friends because it is my alone time.

This place is my favorite place to hit the gym.  Sure beats places like 24 hour fitness and such, simply because it isn't as crowded or intimidating.  This place is smaller, but that fine because it seems very homely.
Staff is really nice, and they do offer a multitude of different classes for children, adults, and seniors alike.  I've never taken any of these classes, as I only use the the gym here, but it's worth noting for sure.  The gym has a nice array of weights, machines, treadmills and such to ensure you get a nice workout.  And it your digging a jacuzzi, they've got one of those bad boys as well.
They do have a parking lot across the street which is always a plus in SF!
The kind of folk that this establishment caters to in general is a very nice crowd.
    Kudos YMCA.

Good basic gym.  Has the essentials.  Free wieght room can get a bit crowded on weekends though, but usually not too long of a wait for anything.  It being a block from my house gives it 5 stars.

Although this one is pretty small, I still love it. It is only 2 blocks away and the workers are super nice. Plenty of old people though.
