So I cheated on my stylist and went to Richard Nicholas last Wednesday. I knew it was time to try someone new I just needed to shake things up in the hair dept. So with a deep feeling of guilt I went in and saw Joaquin who came highly recommended by my friend Erin below.
I am not a product person but did very much enjoy all the bumble and bumble products used they smelled amazing. Joaquin was great just what I like straight forward to the point and not alot of idle chatter. Also he offered an opinion on what I should do which is always nice. I hate going somewhere and you ask them what they think and the just kind of look at you like you were supposed to know when you walk in and how dare you ask them that. Anyway he was great and my hair came out looking and feeling healthy and happy. My blowout was fantastic(wish I could replicate it on my own) and the price was reasonable $60 for a cut and blowout.
I will definitely be back. Like Erin I think I have found my new salon.
If you are looking for a non-stuffy salon filled with professionals who are attentive, talented and helpful, this is a must try. On numerous occasions I have left other salons (in comfy jeans and T) with a plain jane cut. People - I don't wear jeans and t-shirts every day, come on!
This was not the case here. Joey sat and really got to know me, what I was looking for, what products I have at home and how much time I am willing to spend styling every day. After teaching me simple ways to style my hair and providing tips on product use, I left the salon with a style that I can wear sleek or funky and that I can easily recreate.
The Bumble products are just a fabulous perk.
this place needs to be on tabitha's salon takeover. it has potential.
the staff overall has the too cool for you hipster attitude down to a science. think the bare minimum in terms of customer service. fortunately, the owner (or manager? not sure) more than compensates for this by being extra friendly and attentive.
i booked my appointment here last minute, and they were nice enough to squeeze me in. i was grateful for that and didn't mind the wait at all.
joachim was my stylist. he smelled like smoke, but made an effort with some mints. he did a very good job with my cut, listened to my requests and give me a great blowout with advice on controlling my cowlicks.
that said, he could have paid a teeny bit more attention. he brushed my ears several times and got product on my neck and ears. ick.
the space has some very nice elements, like a window onto a narrow alley that somehow still had sun and flowers and a flat panel tv in the shampoo area. overall, though, it needs a fresh coat of paint and either new tile or fresh grout. the appearance was definitely more dingy than edgy.

Let's just set the record straight right off the bat- Richard Nicholas is a great hair studio, and Rose IS a GREAT Hairstylist ( I am not sure what Shenans is babbling about, probably just jealous of how cute Rose is).
Anyway, I have trusted Rose with my hair more than a handful of times and every time I have been pleased! I have rather curly hair and it might be a little difficult for some stylists, but Rose totally understands how curly hair works and is able to achieve all of the cuts that we have set out to create.
Overall, the experience is great...not only with Rose, but with the staff in general. All of the assistants are pleasant and cheerful, and the girls that run the desk are prompt and knowledgeable. I highly recommend both Richard Nicholas and Rose

I have been a faithful customer of Richard Nicholas since 2001 - even after my move to south jersey five years ago. The staff is wonderful!! Helen at the front desk is always helpful. I have been seeing Joe, my hairdresser, longer than my boyfriend! He always listens to what I am thinking about for my hair, offers suggestions and does an excellent job. I am really excited about the Bb products - no animal testing!!
i'll be the first to admit - i have been somewhat of a salon nomad. i wait until there's a giant rat's nest growing out the top of my head and i need an emergency cut. then i'd go to whatever bumble & bumble salon would take me. (i didn't even know this place was a Bb salon until i sat down.)
my appointment today was with juaquin. i walked in with the usual crispy nightmare and walked out with a real haircut and style - all in about 45 minutes. i love it!! i will definitely be going back for some color soon. the prices are very reasonable, the atmosphere is fun and unpretentious. they didn't have the normal obnoxious trendy salon dance music blasting in the background (hello classic rock a la david bowie). all in all, a great experience.

- I had my hair done by LIZZ (super cute pink&black hair. you can't miss her). A friend of mine gets his hair done by her as well. His hair looks great and that's the deciding factor to go to her. Now, his hair is much more creative but all i need is a basic trim. I wish i can ask for something crazy but I prefer the plain look. It came out great, sillky and smooth.
- She was attentive and we had a friendly fun conversation. Plus the studio was very neutral and pretty comfortable. I've noticed client diversity. I thought that's a good sign. Well rounded stylists through out the studio I assume ;)
- I stopped by at Borders afterwords. I never have complements on my hair but I had a gentleman telling me "wow, your hair is pretty." That is a review pretty much speak for itself :)
DO get Rose! She has been cutting my hair for a couple of years and they have been the best haircuts ever! I stopped by one night after work to see if I could get an appointment for a cut the next day, and the receptionist set me up with Rose.I had an idea of what I wanted, and brought some photos. I was so pleased, she did exactly what I wanted. This salon always is running pretty close to schedule, and it is pretty easy to get an appointment. On the rare occasion I couldn't get the appointment I wanted, Helen at the desk has offered to call if there was a cancellation. They are very friendly about coming in for complimentary bang trims. And my haircuts have all grown out very well.
I don't know about you, but when I am planning on dropping some serious money for a haircut, I'd like a stylist who can offer some suggestions/guidance, because, well they're an *expert*. I didn't quite get this here.
I had heard some great things about this salon so I gave it a try. My stylist, Rose, left me sitting in the chair during our "consulation" for 10 minutes, on my birthday, while she chatted with her previous client about her hair color. When she finally got around to me, she did offer many suggestions and was very inarticulate with the ones she did make.
In the end, the cut came out alright, the bangs were not how she described them, and I left thankful that bangs grow back ridiculously fast. Maybe just my stylist sucked?
Tips before you go: Don't get Rose, do mention that you work on the block (if you actually work on the block), do come back for free bang trims.
I started going to Richard Nicholas when I moved back to Philly from New York City after college. There was no way in hell I was going to use the stylist my mom goes to. The guy will spray you down with Lysol if you have the slightest sniffle. I found RN after browsing Philadelphia Magazine's website. Joanne came highly rated and I made an appointment with her. At the time, she had pink hair and I was a bit skeptical of what I might look like when I left the place. Joanne is wonderful, though. She's creative and a bit of a risk taker. If you want something new, she's the go-to gal. She also listened to what I wanted and didn't push me past my comfort zone. She's warm, friendly, and a good conversationalist if you're in a chatty mood. She also isn't a product-pusher. Come to think of it, no one at RN has ever pushed services or products on me. Also, I feel that their services are well priced considering the surrounding area. I never have to wait months to get an appointment, the staff is superb and unpretentious, and the shop has a nice modern feel to it. I highly recommend them.
I had Rebecca for my color and Rose for my cut. I used to go to Bubbles but I thought it was time to look for a new salon. I had heard good things about this place. So I walked in a Tuesday morning and they took me as a 'walk-in' right away. I was glad! I sat right in Rebecca's chair and we chatted about color. Then Rose came over and we talked about the cut. I mentioned I wanted some of the weight taken off the ends and that I wanted a trim (about an inch off). I also said I wanted it to still be long enough to pull back in a pony tail and not have it fall out. I went downstairs with Rebecca. I got a partial hi-light. It took her some time and I had wondered how long she had been coloring. She told me 'five years'. Then I was shampooed by a nice young lady who gave a great scalp massage. I came back upstairs to the main level and my hair cut and styled with Rose. I was pleased with the result. I left with beautiful hi-lights and plenty of swing in my hair. The real test was when I washed it two nights later. It was so easy to manage. There were no dry fly away ends and I felt the color made me look 10 years younger. And I could pull it back into a nice neat pony tail without having pieces of it fall out while I was exercising. It took only minutes to dry it with the blow dryer, too. What a pleasant surprise all around!
