Chico, CA
I had a Japanese Bento box for dinner with a CA roll appetizer the other night and enjoyed it quite a bit. I think the large sake that split with my dinner-mate may have influenced my mood and opinion of the place, but hey, it works for me. The decor was really nice, with shiny wood booths and etched glass dividers. It looked very asian and seemed upscale. As far as the food goes, the chicken teriyaki was decent (average, or slightly above average) and the tempura was very good. They gave me 2 big prawns and an assortment of veggies. The only comment I can make is that it was slightly on the greasy side, so maybe an adjustment to the oil temperature would be in order. The salads and miso soup were nice. Service was OK, however at one point a waitress came to our table and practically yelled quite loudly, "Is everything OK here" in the middle of our conversation. It made me jump - LOL. It's way better than being ignored, though! They were really good about filling up the water and tea, so they get snaps for that. I would go back here again for Japanese food. I have not tried the Chinese food or the Sushi Bar, so I will update this review after I try them out.

I heard this place had rotweiler heads in their refrigerator? If this is true, that's disgusting!
Really good Mongolian "beef" tho! I like their orange "chicken" and honey walnut shrimp. If they are really serving mystery meat, they make their mystery meat pretty good!!!! -

Ok, but they try to do too much.
They serve Chinese and Japanese cuisine, and have a full sushi bar. Usually, a restaurant would choose to specialize in one of these areas (and maybe add a limited sushi selection on for kicks).
Most of the food is decent, definitely edible. But it's overpriced for what it is.
The chinese food is the best thing they serve, but even still it is uninspired and feels heavy/greasy. Hard to eat a lot of it.
The japanese food is bland, and doesn't feel like japanese food to me. It lacks a freshness and openness that I always get with better Japanese places (like Ojiya!).
The sushi... well, I'm a huge sushi fan, and it doesn't take much to satisfy me in that regard, but I honestly don't feel safe eating the sushi here. Whether that's justified or not, who knows, but looking at other reviews, I'm not the only one who feels that way.
Gordon Ramsey would have a field day with this place over the menus alone. And yes, that is plural. Options overwhelming.
The in-house service can be hit or miss. But I've also had delivery from here quite a few times and I must say their delivery man is very kind and respectful. It feels weird mentioning that in a review, but honestly, he's the best delivery guy I've ever dealt with. -

Solid Chinese and Japanese dining.
I really enjoy going here with my family. The kids eat edemame until they burst. The sushi is worth having, but nothing exciting (Go to the Raw Bar, Japanese Blossom, or Big Tuna for that).
I know it's changed owners, then back to the originals over the years, but I remember coming back in the early 1980s with my grandmother. Her favorite was the Howard's Special Chow Mein, and it still tastes as good today.
My new favorite is a bento box with tempura shrimp and veg.
It also has been FANTASTIC for groups. My wife and I have both hosted work and large (25+) parties there, and the wait staff was fantastic. -
Review from Kimmie M.
This place is pretty good. I LOVE sushi so it isn't that hard to please me. Give me raw fish and I am a happy girl. What is great is that they have Chinese and Japanese, which means that your picky friends who don't like sushi because they are missing out on the best thing ever can come along and not whine about only getting vegetable tempura. And yes, I am talking about you, Laura. And, fortune cookies. Yay.
Back to sushi, I really like a variety of their rolls. They taste pretty fresh for not having a seafood source anywhere nearby, and have a nice selection of interesting and different rolls to choose from.
The 'party' rooms are really fun too--you sit on the floor on pillows and eat and they close these screens so its private. Just don't wear a skirt/dress. -

"You just can't get good sushi in Chico". What was I thinking? Other Yelpers have given this place good reviews, so I thought I'd give it a try. My Chico relatives told me not to go, as it is over-priced.
It was over-priced for what we got. The decor, as you enter is quite pretty, a combination of reds and golds and etched glass. They had an indoor Koi pond with healthy looking fish. The combination of Chinese and Japanese was a bit confusing to me but I guess that works for Chico. I'm a PollyAnna, always hopeful We tried their sushi only. I ordered tuna, salmon and yellowtail belly. The yellowtail was bad, or on the edge. I did not eat my second piece. At first I thought, How silly of me to order sushi on a Monday...This tastes like Friday's fish. Then I realized it was Tuesday and the fish still tasted like Friday's fish.
The Sushi Chef (I'll give him points for this) was making the rounds of the tables. I would say he's a non-native speaker of English, or did a great job pretending to be. When he asked me how my sushi was I pointed to the yellowtail belly and told him, "it's fishy" his response, "yes it's fish" finally after some back and forth on this I finally said, "No, fishy - Bad.". I did not eat the second piece. I hate being sick.
The chef sent over a small cup of tuna poke, which was tasty, but I think I won't try sushi here again. -

Chinese menu AND Japanese menu. Both are delicious!! Pretty good service. Really awesome room that you can get that is closed off and you sit on cushions on the floor for authentic dining. Groovy yeah?

Sushi rolls are a good size and filling. Between the boyfriend and I, two rolls and some sashimi filled us up when usually we go through over four rolls plus sashimi at other shacks. I suggest sitting in the sushi bar because the chef is hilarious. Also, don't eat the cheese cake desserts.

We have been LOVING this place for a few years now.
Three menus , sushi, chinese, and japanese. Never at a loss to find something to order.
We were spoiled on our first visit having Henry wait on us. He gives superb 5 star service to his customers. Offers suggestions etc.
Most of the staff knows us well enough that they already know what we want to drink!
However we have had a couple times received very poor customer service with servers. But after going there for 3-4 years ...
Overall, we are always happy to come eat here. Good food. Good sake. Good atmosphere. Good service. Happy family. -

I have been to this restraunt half a dozen times. Its a good place to go to dinner if you have a large group but the food is only mediocre at best, and I would say the same for the customer service.
The last time I went was one of the worst restraunt experiences I've had! I have never been a huge fan of their sushi ( and I am a sushi fiend!) but nothing on their Chinese food menu sounded good so i decide to order a cooked sushi roll (the lion king).
It was pretty bad the seaweed was really chewy and the fish was poor quality. I have never sent a plate back to the kitchen before that. Then when i sent it back a waitress who wasnt my original waitress came up to the table and tried to give me a lecture on sushi, I have been eating sushi since i was a kid, I know good sushi when I taste it.
Needless to say her arrogant attitude and disrespectful customer service will guarentee that I never go back! -

I'd give it 6 stars if I could. They have really great customer service and their food is amazingly delicious. I love how it is beautifully designed inside.
I've tried their edamame, hot and sour soup, crunch roll and walnut prawns. I cant wait to go here again! -

Wow!
I went to school in Chico for a few years and I did not even know about this place until I come back 3 years later for a friend's graduation. Henry F. (the one commenting on reviews here) is the man who waited on us and he is very friendly.
I was surprised with everything at this restaurant. Before walking in, I figured "hey, it's Chico. This is probably a fast food restaurant that would be comparable to Wok 'n Roll at the campus food court." I quickly discovered the opposite.
Ambiance is great, service was good, and the food was superb. I like how there are different menus for the Chinese and Japanese food. A little confusing at first, but not hard to figure out.
I'll need to come here again and try some new stuff before I give it 5 stars. If my experience here was as good as my first one, then it'll be justified. Too bad it'll be months before I'm in Chico next. -

The waitstaff work very hard and run from table to table but the cooks need to work on basic taste rather than making up imaginative names for their Sushi! Presentation was good but my Hot Night roll was basically tasteless with little spice. The Yaki-Udon Scampi was over the top for imagination but lacked taste also. Please stick with basic Asian dishes and then branch out a little at a time. Clean restaraunt and nice people but food needs to improve! Many other choices for me in Chico and perhaps they had a bad night others seem to like the food so to each his own!

Review from Erin K.
There aren't that many amazing Asian food places in Chico (or at least what I remember). This one is definitely one of the most interesting restaurants I've been to, simply because they serve both Japanese and Chinese food and have two different menus.
Now I've never been disappointed in my food here, but I've never been blown away either. So it's just kinda meh.
Now my family does go here every Christmas Eve now that my Aunt moved to Paradise, so I'm at least glad it's not gross food, but I wish they'd add more veggie rolls (especially tempura veggie rolls!). Then I'd be a happy girl. -
Review from Renae H.
Holy cow that's a lot of food! Dine here and you will be taking food home, but that's ok because it's really good!
I was very surprised at how extensive their menu was. Generally speaking when you have that many options none of them are particularly fabulous, boy was that ever not the case here! We got one of their dinners for two (it was "B" I think) from the Chinese menu. That came with soup (choice of won ton or hot and sour, you and your dining companion do not have to choose the same one, yay!), three different kinds of appetizers (won tons, egg rolls, and some chicken thing), sweet and sour pork, cashew nut chicken and fried rice. Dinner for two was easily enough food for four, and the prices were incredibly reasonable (about $13/person I believe). The service was fast, efficient and friendly.
Don't let appearances fool you, the outside is unassuming, but inside you'll find a real gem. Maybe next time I'll try something from the Japanese menu. -

This is my second time to Rice Bowl, and overall it was a pleasant enough experience, though there were a few annoyances. First, I had a hard time comprehending why our server thought it would be great to seat us right next to the only other couple in the entire restaurant. Thankfully, they left about 5 minutes into our stay.
Second gripe (though small): my boyfriend asked for his rolls to come without cucumber because he hates it, and they all came with cucumber anyway. My roll even came with cucumber and it wasn't even on the list of ingredients! We're used to picking them out though, so not a huge deal.
As for the food...
- Caterpiller roll (unagi, avocado, *cucumber sticks* w/ unagi sauce): Pretty good. I picked the cucumber out and wished there had been extra eel inside because it was mostly rice with a small sliver of meat.
- Veggie Tempura: Still hot and crispy, with a varied assortment of vegetables (broccoli, carrots, green beans, sweet potatoes, an onion ring and zucchini). Really tasty.
My boyfriend got an assortment of sushi rolls, including spicy tuna, salmon skin, and unagi. He said the unagi was the best, then the tuna and then the skin. None were fishy.
Their prices are still very expensive, about $40-50 for two, so this place is only for special occasions.1 Previous Review: Show all »

I came here for my friends 21st, we had the sake bombs, sat at a big round table with friends and the fam and enjoyed a huge array of yummy dishes. They have anything and everything you could want here... my favorites are the hot and sour soup, and most chinese dishes, the sushi wasn't my favorite but I'm super picky so I'm not a good judge of sushi-character.
I love the atmosphere of this place, you can tell that a lot of thought and love went into planning it, they have the private rooms up front where you can sit on the floor like in old Doris Day movies from the 60s.
Since my friends birthday I've been back a few times and haven't been dissappointed yet.
Don't forget to check out the coy fish alcove as they seat you.Listed in: Soup-er!

I think this restaurant's name is a misnomer -- "Rice Bowl" implies something simple, with a limited menu.
Wow! After trying virtually all the other Chinese restaurants in Chico and leaving with disappointment at the mediocre fare, I am blown away by this beautiful restaurant. Usually I try to stay away from the opulent Chinese food restaurants -- where they seem to focus more on the decor than on what's happening in the kitchen.
At Rice Bowl, you enter a temple dedicated to beauty. It is over-the-top "Forbidden City" style architecture, and inside doesn't disappoint.
The menu is a combination of sushi and traditional Chinese dishes, and we ordered only from the Chinese side -- the sesame chicken was delish, as were the sauteed green beans, bean curds, kung pao beef, and noodles. Prices were very reasonable, especially because the portions are huge! We ended up taking more than half the food home. Hot & sour soup is pretty good too.
Service was friendly and swift.
They also have private dining rooms, as well as Tatami rooms (old-style Japanese, where you sit at low tables). Bar is beautiful too. -

This place rocks, oh my gosh let me tell you something!! It is a good idea to come here for your birthday though, that way you don't have to pay (it's a little pricey but whatever!!!). My friends and I were able to get into a secluded room where you sit on the floor and have to take off your shoes! WHAT AN EXPERIENCE!! I gulped down a bunch of sake and inhaled all the delicious rolls that my friends ordered. I was pretty hammered but I am pretty sure the best one was a crunch roll or something like that!!! Their sake was awesome too! Usually I am on the verge of throwing up after I take sake bombs... but not here!! FIVE STARS!!

I love this place. Especially when I can't decide if I want Chinese or Japanese, they do both. They have two menus. It is perfect for my boyfriend and I who always seem to want different foods! All the food is good. The only thing I didn't like...I had the hardest time deciding what to order.
It is an awesome place for groups. There are private rooms for groups to sit in, so you don't feel bad if everyone has too many sake bombs and things get a little crazy as they tend to in Chico! -

Can't decide between Chinese or Japanese? No prob, this is your place. They two menus with both cuisines. In-house sushi bar too. The sushi was pretty good - not the best I've ever had but I'd definately order it again. We tried approx. 10 Chinese entrees and they were all good. Decor is very nice. They also have the private rooms - but make a reservation for those. Service was knowledgable, quick and friendly. A good place to bring friends or even kids. 3.5 stars.

After all the hype, I decided to give the Rice Bowl a try. What a mistake! The only reason I even went was to celebrate a friends birthday.
First, the ambiance: completely dry, mess-hall style. No music, not one actual Asian person working (makes me want to question the authenticity of the food). Good decor, but the atmosphere feels more like a Dennys.
Second, the service: Waitress never brought my drink order (a soda and water) out until I've asked her two times. Once I got my food order, I was left without a fork for a good 10 minutes. Ended up leaving a $1 tip, which was a bit too much.
Third, the actual food: no flavor to it.
Overall, I was disappointed. I've tried many Chinese places in Chico and while the Rice Bowl does not fit in the bottom pit of places, I would still recommend going elsewhere (like PeeKing on 2nd Street).Comment from Henry F. of Rice Bowl 5/5/2009

I was really disappointed with my last visit to the Rice Bowl. I ordered a bowl of miso soup and the Tuna Tataki (seared tuna) salad. The miso soup was fine--just your standard miso with seaweed and tofu in it. The salad was incredibly disappointing though. It was just a rather small plate of iceberg lettuce with a few pieces of seared tuna on top. That's all. No other vegetables, no dressing, nothing. The tuna was alright, but not great. The worst part of it was that this measly salad cost me $10.
I was also unimpressed with the service. The waitress was very pushy in trying to get us to order, but it takes a long time to read through both the Chinese and the Japanese menus, and there's a lot to choose from on each! The restaurant wasn't full, so I don't know why they were rushing us. My companion didn't know what chow mein was, so we asked her, and she was a bit rude in explaining it to us, basically just saying, "noodles with noodles" and acting as though we should have known that. Later a different waiter came to take our order, and we asked how big a bowl of soup was. His answer: "Oh, you know, pretty big." That told us nothing, obviously, and we had to prod him further to actually show us about how big a bowl would be.
I've ordered take-out sushi from the Rice Bowl since my first visit (reviewed in January 2009) and have become less and less impressed. You can't choose a combination of sushi when you order take-out, so if you want a meal of it, you have to order a bunch of the same type of sushi which is not very interesting, and made me feel sick from the lack of variety. It is also very over-priced for the quality of the food you get.
I still think it's fun to go with a group and sit in one of the tatami rooms, but for a more casual meal it's not worth it.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Just went back here for a special dinner out with friends. We ordered a huge variety of food and everyone ended up reaching across the table to eat eachothers food because everything was just so good!!
We had edamame, mu shui chicken, potstickers, chow mein, honey walnut prawns, mandarin chicken, some sushi and curry chicken. Absolutley nothing dissapointed, but the mandarin chicken was (as always) extremely impressive. The flavor is just delicious with just the smallest amount of spice. The prawns were fresh and fabulous, the sauce wasn't to heavy and the walnuts in it were candied to perfection.
I can't account for the sushi- I just don't like sushi, but the friends who ate it said it was very good.
If I had to say something bad- thier potstickers aren't the best, but so what. They make up for it tenfold with the rest of the menu!! I love the place and can't wait to go back! -

I've been eating at the Rice Bowl since the mid 80's. Tonight was the first time I've ever had an average tasting dinner. My wife and I both noticed it.
Now I'm in the dog house because I actually told the staff it was not up to par and embarrassed my wife. But a fifty dollar dinner should be remarkable not just OK.
One bad meal in over 20 years... I'll be back but I'm talking to you Howard. You better get back in the kitchen, and find out why the quality has changed. Have you got a new chef? -

This place is amazing! I dined here with my boyfriend and his father and we all enjoyed the food. If you are vegetarian like me, I recommended ordering the miso soup (best I've ever had), the cucumber salad (amazing!) the spring rolls (so tasty!) and the szechuan spicy tofu (so tasty!) Our waitress was awesome and made great recommendations for sushi in addition to the appetizer food we had. It's the best of both worlds here! Chinese food and Japanese food.. yum yum yum! Order the peppermint chocolate mousse cake. It is to die for!

Decor:
5 stars- compared to most chinese restaurants, this one stands out... There seems to have been a lot of thought and work that was put into this restaurant.. With drapes hanging from the ceiling, to the simple but elegant red painted wooden walls... There are even framed marble animals (dragon, some kind of fish, etc.) hung on the wall with its own lighting... It looks good! Even the corner of the ceiling has the same rooftop style as the ancient chinese buildings (think pagola rooftops)
Food:
Miami lady roll... Very interesting... It reminds me of a crunchy roll with some salmon(?) Topped with some kind of mango sauce... I persoanally thought it was a weird mix... I'll have to try another roll in the future...
Chicken lettuce wrap with added "meal" for extra 3.50 that includes fried rice, spring roll, fried wonton, and some kind of foil wrapped chicken... I also added the Howards special chow mein for extra 2.00 to try...
Spring roll was the veggie type... It was standard.
Fried wonton is just a deep fried wonton sheet (like a thick chip)... things aren't adding up to the 3.50 i paid extra for!
Fried rice was MEDIOCRE! Very bland... terrible, really. Think of the $0.99 per item type nasty fast food dishes.
Lettuce wraps were good! The minced chicken mix with mushrooms, onions, etc was a bit on the salty side... But mixed w the lettuce: just right.
Chow mein... never came out. The waitress forgot about it! Why did I pay an extra $2.00 to try it? I even had to remind them to take the $2.00 off my bill.
So overall... 3.5 stars for great decor and standard/subpar food (lettuce wrap was genuine, fried rice was the fast food chinese mixed fried rice. This place caters to folks who don't know any better about good Japanese/Chinese food; come to the bay area and we'll show you some real Japanese and/or Chinese restaurants!)
Trust me, I really wanted to give this place good ratings, especially as I respect yelpers and use their reviews a lot. Sorry if I've offended anyone; this place just isn't worth my time or money (nor the company's, since I was using my corporate credit card). -

Living in the Bay Area, I'm used to good quality sushi. I've become spoiled by it. I grew up in Chico, which for most of my life had very few sushi restaurants. I never went to the Rice Bowl until they reopened just a couple years ago, and was quite impressed. They carry a good selection of Japanese and Chinese food.
Rice Bowl's sushi easily compares to the sushi at my favorite restaurants in the South Bay. Their Hot Night (spicy tuna and avocado with special sauce) is to die for. It has its own unique taste that I just crave, and I find myself wishing the restaurants here had it. I haven't tried their Chinese, but my family seems to love it.
Their service is quite good, and some of their waiters go out of their way to make sure you have everything you need.
They have a good selection of drinks. I'm a fan of their Nigori sake, though I've heard great things about their blueberry sake. For those who enjoy the Japanese soda Ramune, you'll be glad to know they carry several flavors.
The place feels quite spacious and clean from the inside, even though it really doesn't look like much from the outside.
My only real "complaint" is that they're a bit more pricey than I'm used to, but given that Chico is not known for its quality sushi restaurants, this isn't that surprising. Still, I end up paying several dollars more there than I would in most good sushi restaurants I've been to. Still, I highly recommend them. Easily my favorite sushi restaurant in Chico, and I make it a point to eat there at least once whenever I visit. -

While I'm not always blown away with the Chinese food here, I really LOVE the Sushi menu. Love that I can choose from both menus, because sometimes ya just need variety. The Chinese food has always been tasty and adequate, but the Sushi chef is fantastic -- fun, personable, attentive. The Sushi is always fresh & delicious with generous portions at a reasonable price. Great place for large groups.

The place is beautiful. The outside doesn't look like much but inside it actually pretty nice.
The have a choice of Chinese and Japanese food.
The Chinese food.. I'll have to say yummy.. like wow, i was impressed. I did not expect a place in CHICO to have such a high quality Chinese food. If compared to Panda express; this place beats it or equivalent.
The sushi on the other hand is not good.
i ordered the Miami Roll. Not fresh at all. My sushi was cold and watery. Taste wise ..um... not bad but i really do not recommend sushi there.
To be on the safe side , order the Chinese food. -

Wow! I passed this place all the time when going to visit my sister, but I never stopped until recently. The outside always just looked so cheesy, but finally we decided to try it. Glad we did! I've been to the Rice Bowl on several occasions and order out at least once a month.
Being a recent transplant to Chico- I've found this to be a great place for all things Asian.
I love going here as an option because I'm a sushi fan and my fiance is not. There are plenty of Chinese menu options he can order while I get my fill of sushi.
The private rooms are great! My co-workers and I recently reserved both on short notice for a friends Birthday Party and it was a huge hit!
The Rice Bowl staff was friendly, helpful and very accommodating! A big plus in my book.
My only complaint is while in the private room our water ran dry. We definitely appreciate the privacy and little disturbance but a pitcher of water (possibly in a Japanese looking vessel as not to disturb he decor) would have been much appreciated.
