I really enjoyed this place. the food with decent  and a good price.

I read the other reviews about the owner being kind of a hard ass  so I talked about it with him and he explained, he's a small business owner with not a lot of cash to hire a bunch of people so when he gets busy service gets slow, and when he's busy he cannot be sociable he has to focus on work

Rhose Island Reds is an ok Island to make a stop at.

Rhode Island Reds had been on my radar for a while, and afetr a recent Post article, I decided to try it for lunch on a Saturday afternoon.

The place is easy to miss. Its very nondescript and almost looks like a chop shop garage from the outside. There is parking across from it at a small park (that was nice).

It has a very quaint, homey feel to it. Big menu up front, and you order what you want at the counter, and then go sit down. There is an eclectic assemblage of booths and 4 top tables. The day I went the 'Awesome Amaretto Apple Thingy' was not available (drat!) because they have had a run on them due to the Post article. What they did have was Coke from Mexico (made with real sugar-no corn syrup), and served in a glass bottle.

I placed my order and sat down. You can help yourself to water while you wait. My order took a few minutes, but I was in no rush, and it was only one guy behind the counter. From the papers and games I saw throughout the establishment I take it on late night you could linger there and play a few board games with friends over a nice meal.

I ordered the Orange Tarragon chix wings served with horseradish mixed with Basil. The wings by themselves were just ok, but the sauce-pure genius. The sauce really kicks it up a notch. Who knew horseradish and basil would blend so well together. Along with the wings came my bottle of Mexican coke. Unlike in places where they give you small bottles, this one was tall, cold, and real sugar makes a difference.

I then had the Duke Kahalamano pizza, with proscuitto and pineapple. That was a winner. I enjoy my pizza thin crusted (sorry Chicago fans), and this was thin and crisp thanks to a clay oven they use. It was also a pizza that easily could have served two people. Very tasty.

I got a box for my leftovers and departed pretty full. Next time I am in the neighborhood I will drop in for the unfinished business with the Apple Thingy. I don't live close by so I would not make a special trip just for Rhode ISland Reds, but if I was in the neighborhood and hungry, I would go back.

If you are nearby, this Island is worth a stop to try out.

HIGHLY OVER-RATED!!!  Normally when I follow the rating of my fellow yelpers, they are spot on, and I am hardly ever disappointed, however today was the exception.  I was SUPER hungry when I went to this place.  The staff was very nice, and took my order quickly.  I was in a crunch for time, so I just took my food to go (I planned on eating on the way to my next destination in the car)....  FINALLY, I get to eat...

To my surprise, my "HOT" sandwich (or at least the sandwich that I requested to be hot) was STONE COLD!  Seriously!  And then, the taste of the sandwich just didn't get it for me.  I was totally disappointed.  I ended up throwing most of it away (and I really don't like to throw away food - I offered it to my husband and he didn't even eat it!)

Anyway, while I was in there, some of the other customers ranted & raved about how good the pizza was there, so I'm willing to go back and give the pizza a shot, but probably nothing else there!

My experience at Rhode Island Reds left me underwhelmed, and I shared my thoughts about the food, ambience, service, and location.  Now the owner is apparently commenting on any less-than-glowing reviews left here on Yelp.  I'll take it as a compliment that he didn't instruct me to "Do something useful, like drop dead."  That's his response to a 2-star review.

Any inclination I had to return to this restaurant is gone.  If this is how the owner responds to criticism, I don't want to support his business.

I really really love this place!  Its become a regular hang out for me and ms Stephanie for our ladies who lunch meeting.

Its out of the way but really worth it.  Everything is fresh, and if you can dream it up they can make it.  I'm boring with my HUGE plate of arugula and a side of assorted meats (salami, turkey, etc).  The place has a great feel to it, and the lady who runs it remembers you, and treats you like family.

No frills, she calls your name when your food is ready. and you clean up your own table when you're done.

If you haven't been, take the time to go.  This is truly a diamond in the rough that is Hyattsville. lol  Actually I dont know that hyattsville is the rough... It just sounded cool in my head.

Took my wife to lunch here on a hot Saturday in August.  Both of us ordered sandwiches.  20 minutes later, our order is nowhere to be seen.  I go up to the counter and the girl is sitting there reading a book,  The owner, who had been in the kitchen, is out front installing a bicycle rack.

It was obvious that she had "forgotten" our order (and considering there were NO other customers in the joint...this was unforgivable).  Right then the owner came in, I told him what had happened, he "apologized" saying it was her first day.  Yeah, her first day and she must have left her brain at home.

Our sandwiches were ready in two minutes.  He should have at least comped the luke warm ice tea, with a couple of small cubes in each glass.

So much so supporting small independent businesses.

Yay for great independent cafes! This place rocks. It's really cute inside. We only intended to stop in for a cup of tea yesterday afternoon, but the aroma of the just out of the oven quiches sealed the deal.

We each ordered the vegetable quiche ($7). They are served in a ceramic ramekin dish. The pastry is homemade and draped across the serving dish. It was rather small, but absolutely delicious!

The tea and coffee they serve is organic and fair trade brands. My English Breakfast was so good. The owner/cook/counterperson even steamed the milk for my tea. Nice touch! I like how the owner is passionate about his business. Places like this make you want to say no to the chains and come back again and again.

Now every time I visit my friend in College Park we will have a regular hangout. Don't overlook Rhode Island Reds if you are cruising down this way.

Rhode Island Red's is one of the few places in the College Park area that I really feel good about eating at.  It's a privately owned cafe with daily specials, a comfortable atmosphere and a really friendly environment.  I got the pepperoni pizza, sensible green salad and a single espresso.  The pizza was thin crust, delicious and crispy.  The salad was chopped with high quality ingredients with a light, but delicious dressing.

Rhode Island Red's is one of those places that really seems to care about quality of food.  The food isn't churned out assembly line style, but maticulously prepared by the owned with the customer in mind.  He has free wi-fi (but asks you at least buy something if you're going to use it, which is certainly a fair request).

Just 10-15 minutes away from the University of Maryland, its not a far drive and certainly worth that little extra to not go to one of the chains in College Park.  Go check out Rhode Island Red's! You won't be disappointed!

    I love Rhode Island Reds.
I've been there several times now and received great service. I don't get the negative reviews on service as I haven't had a bad experience once. The owner has always been very friendly and pleasant.
As for the food, it is fresh and delicious.  If you eat a steady diet of processed foods, you probably can't appreciate Rhode Island Red's offerings, as he serves organic whole foods.  I, for one, love it.
You must try the awesome amaretto apple thingy; it is DELISH!  I also like the quiche and some dish with sauteed vegetables (I can't recall the name).  I stop by whenever I can.  Tasty!

I stopped by on a early sunny Saturday afternoon. I had written it in on my to-do list! I love supporting mom and pop establishments. However, I was a bit concerned when I pulled into the lot and there were no other cars present. When I got inside, I didnt see anyone behind the counter. Then all of a sudden an older Italian guy comes flying around the corner and asked me how could he help me.

it looked like a petite euro bistro...very cute in the middle of Hyattsville. There were some ready made items in the window like quiche and a few sandwiches or pastries.  There was also a little section with baskets/barrels containing produce. I came in on a mission to try one thing and one thing only. But the juicy red tomatoes caught my attention...so I grabbed four.

The menu is not very extensive and pretty straight forward but I still couldn't decide. I ordered a quiche and a breakfast sandwich. The guy behind the counter (Im assuming was the owner) wasnt super friendly but he seemed very meticulous about his food. He made a point of asking me was I eating the quiche right away because he didnt want me to reheat it and cause it to turn to rubber. I assured him I was heading home to eat it. lol He offered a drink and I declined until I saw San Pellegrino Limonata. I love those drinks! So once again, my one item was turning into a mega purchase.

I loved the vegetable quiche. The egg/tomato/cheese sandwich was just ok. But he prepared it with lots of love...lol. All I would ask is that he get some glove action going on. Im a germ freak and I would prefer that my food not be handled so much with bare hands. :(  Other than that, I cant wait to try his pizzas. Im sure they're delicioso!

If you go, take cash. He has a little note at the cash register stating that he prefers. CASH. :-)

Went here today with my friend that I am now referring to as "Super Kat" and was pleasantly surprised. I didn't expect much when we drove up, but the food here is really good. I got the Duke, a pizza with tomato sauce, prosciutto, pineapple and added arugula. It was light and crispy and very flavorful. I like the décor and the woman working there was really nice. Great lunch place if you live or work in the area.

This place has a lot of potential.  The location is fine.  The actual cafe is really cute, and they sell a lot of interesting and tasty foods and drink in the market area.  The food you order is also really good.  But the service is terrible.  Absolutely terrible.  The gentleman that works there (I think he's the owner?) is incredibly rude and surly.  I have been there twice.  The first time, I thought it was just a bad time, and I noticed he was ok later on when there were fewer customers.  But the second time, he completely ignored my friend and I, and when we approached the counter, he yelled at us that he was busy.  Plus, there was a very young boy working in the kitchen as well, making pizzas.

Maybe both times I've gone have been stressful times, but a business should be able to deal with those.  I'm not going back, and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone else especially not at busy weekend times.

Rhode Island reds kicks ass! The fare primarily consists of thin crust pizzas, sandwiches and coffees (at least from what I recall). Every dish is prepared with great care and attention. This restaurant makes up for the dearth of gourmet eateries in the college park area. In addition to the excellent quality of food and drink, the prices are well within a college student's budget. It would be a shame for one to frequent the University of Maryland environs and forget to make a stop at Rhode Island Reds Cafe.

I really love this place. I moved to Hyattsville a few months ago and I've passed Reds several times on the way to DC, each time bookmarking it. I finally went in yesterday, and I'm glad I did. The owner was really friendly, the atmosphere is great and they even have board games. The food was great and surprisingly reasonable for a private cafe. I went with a friend, ordered a pizza, bottle of wine, ice cream and a latte, bill came to about $30. Great place, I will be taking more friends.

We stopped in on a Sunday afternoon and were very pleased. As the only guests, they didn't mind my 2 year old checking the place out and allowed her to sample a few things. The atmosphere is very laid back and comfortable. Ordered quiche, two pizzas, side salad and a bottle of Pino Griggio. I am not a fan of quiche but my sister and mom really enjoyed it. The salad was basic, nothing exciting. Now the pizza, that was excellent. The hand tossed crispy crust was fresh and tasty. We had a cheese pizza and a pepperoni. Surprised that the cheese had a better taste than the pepperoni. Either way both were excellent. I think our bill was maybe $30 which was a great deal for four people. Looking for to going back with a date.

After reading previous reviews, I decided to give this place a try.  I was flatly disappointed for several reasons.  Although I agree that this place is cute and has potential,  I lost my appetite instantly when I found a piece of hair in the pizza crust.  Finding hair stuck in the pizza dough confirmed my suspicious that the place is not clean.  I noticed that the person who made pizzas with his bare hands also handled customers' money.  I didn't see him wash his hands before handling the pizzas.  Also the "clean napkins" were dirty with dried pizza sauce on them.   In addition, the crust of the pizza I had wasn't baked long enough to have the crispness texture.    I do not intend to return to this place again.

After reading all those good reviews, I must have gone in there on an off day, but I did not have as a great time as everyone else.  The food is OK, simple and limited and expensive for what you get but decently cooked.  There is a certain ambiance which is kind of nice but when I talked with the owner, he came off kind of pretentious and arrogant.  I walked away with a small foam container of a small portion of french influenced food, $13 dollar poorer and a little ticked off from talking to attitude.
