Just finished a monster Korean steak sandwich, good and spicy! The cheddar cheese seemed like an odd idea, but I ended up liking it. My wife's vegetarian barbecue "chicken" sandwich was great too - sweet, tangy, and tasted a lot like chicken...

Service is quick and pleasant, and they make and sell their own Kimchi. (I can't vouch for its authenticity, but it's delicious, and beats trekking down to Kukje in Daly City.)

Ambiance:  More than anything else, this is your typical California liquor store/deli market -- except for a few features.  One, there is an actual bar along the perimeter for sitting and eating.  I found this to be a very nice feature for those who were hoping to eat their sandwich right away while it was still hot.  Second, the place was pretty dang clean...  which, you know, is always nice.  No bathroom on site though; they have some sort of agreement with an establishment across the street, because they told us to go use their bathroom.  Ask them!

Service:  VERY nice people here.  Note:  If you're hoping for a quick in and out order and pickup, think again.  We came here on a Saturday and the wait for sandwiches was 45 minutes.  Being that the sandwich was the sole and singular purpose of our visit, we waited.  It was worth it.

Food:  We came for the Katsu Sandwich, but it has REGRETTABLY been discontinued. ARGH.  Oh well, we got the Korean Steak Sandwich. OMGAH.  It was to die for!  With kimchi and a good deal of flavor, the sandwich hit the spot.  We paired it with some cheap champagne (the lady working at the cash register told us which one was the best flavor for the cheapest price) and we waltzed on over to Dolores Park, eating and basking in the sun.  Twas bliss.

I marked down one star for the wait, because they changed their menu to get rid of the Katsu, and because of the lack of bathroom on site (none of which can be helped, but yea).  All in all, the service was good and the location was clean and pleasant. I'll be coming here for my badass-sandwich-fix again VERY soon.

    4 out of 5!

I'm rating this a two.  It would be a five except they took their most popular sandwich -- the Chicken Katsu -- off the menu "temporarily" I was told, without a date of return. That was months ago. Every time I ask an employee about it, I get a different story.

I say it's the most popular sandwich because when it was served, it consistently sold out on a daily basis, way before closing.  I just wish they'd bring it back, and barring that, give us a decent reason for why it's gone. The way they employees just shrug their shoulders or give an answer seemly chosen at random is frustrating, and despite their delicious menu, customers shouldn't be treated that way.

I still stop in there from time to time, but not like I used to. BRING BACK THE KATSU, RHEA'S!  And I'll change my review.

Yeah yeah yeah Korean steak sandwich blah blah blah with a pork katsu thrown in every once in a while. Once you've read one review for Rhea's, you've read them all. I don't need to tell you how AMAZEBALLS the aforementioned are since everyone else does a pretty good job with it, but I can say that it is definitely worth trying the other sandwiches and that I highly encourage other Yelpers to talk about them to give more balanced and helpful reviews.

For instance: I am currently indulging in a delicious Gargamel sandwich filled with (quoting from their menu) "grilled sweet soy and garlic-marinated chicken with housemade jicama slaw in vinaigrette, garlic aioli on toasted rosemary ciabatta." Now doesn't that sound YUMMY? Well it is!!! The jicama slaw has carrots in it and reminds me of the pickled veggies they put in banh mi. There's also some kind of lettuce that I think is baby romaine. And the chicken is excellent and different.

There ya go! Try something new at Rhea's.

Also, some quick updates as of 1/5/12 at 2:13pm PST:

*They're NOT selling either the pork or chicken katsu for an indefinite amount of time it seems, so don't even try. Yeah, I was pretty bummed too.

*They used to do a jar deposit with their nomilicious kim chee, but they apparently don't anymore. So basically I wasted two extra bucks the first time I bought kim chee here and didn't need to bring back the empty jar today. I think it costs $6.99 now.

*They still are always crowded and only getting crowded-er, so do yourself a favor and call ahead. They also run out of sandwiches frequently, so get your butt up early to dial in your sando!

Heard about Rhea's through Yelp for the longest time and finally got to try it the other week. This place is ALRIGHT... I don't know what's going on with all the raving reviews... but y'all have obviously not had a REAL GOOD SANDWICH.. I had the Korean steak sandwich and the flavor was alright but it wasn't spectacular or mind blowing. It was also HELLA SMALL... for $9.00.. way overpriced... what a RIP OFF..

    OVER HYPED!

Rhea's Korean steak sandwich is as good as it gets.  I was skeptical at first, but once you take your first bite you'll see that the meat, chili spread and kimchee really do go together on a roll.  It's not cheap but you can share it.

I just wish there are more spots to eat in the market, it's always packed when I go.

+4 stars for *really tasty* sammiches. Like no kidding. Vegetarian BBQ Chicken featuring Layonna's famous vegetarian drum sticks. All you need to know. Carnivore sammiches rule as well. The God Father. Right on, in many ways.

+4 stars for really great service. Folks were helpful, polite, and eager to make really awesome sammiches. For. The. Win.

All that's subjective any way. What you need to know: HOME MADE KIMCHEE, BI7%#ES!

A rather basic selection of groceries, although there is a "deli" (which we didn't try)... BUT the beer selection is surprisingly decent, incl. tons of 22 & 24 oz. choices. Nice, young cashiers; a few fresh fruit choices, but (like the deli) mainly emergencies-only; and rare seating area with stools and prime views of the street.

Overall, an average corner store with some extra umph in the beer department.

As if Rhea's didn't have tons of reviews already....but DAAAAAAAAAAYUUUUUM the Korean Steak Sandwich deserves all the acclaimed praise!  It's delicious. Let me repeat that again with a little more emphasis, IT IS DELICIOUS. The beef is nicely flavored with honey, soy sauce and other spices. The grilled onions have a slight tangy, almost lemon like flavor to it. The garlic aoli compliments the kimchee and chili spread quite nicely. Pair this a 40z and you're all set.

...Ike's, watch out. You've got a strong contender.

    I don't get it.

The honey and I had been looking forward to trying Rhea's deli after seeing it featured on Check Please! Bay Area, but we were ultimately disappointed.  Maybe we expected too much after the oohs and ahhs, almost 5-star Yelp rating, and after seeing the long line there the weekend after the Check Please episode aired.

While the Korean steak sandwich was delicious (good Korean saucey meat, crispy roll, spicy sauce, pickled peppers, etc.), I'm not sure if it was worth the hype, the 25 minute wait, or the $9 price tag.  With drink, we spent $12!

I'd be okay with the price point and the wait if this was a sit-down establishment, but it's anything but.  Tasty sandwich, but overhyped--I feel like Yelpers love this one because of its earnest, hipster, hole-in-the-wall-ness.

I heard about this place recently and gave it a try for Thursday lunch. I showed up about 11:25 (the deli opens at 11:30), put in my order, and waited. And waited. And waited.

I got my sandwich at 11:45. 15 minutes for a sandwich. There was one guy in front of me when I came in.

The sandwich (Korean steak) was great. Beautifully fresh roll. Delicious, tender meat. Nicely sauced.Just the right amount of spiciness.

Good eats, just be prepared to wait.

I heard from a friend that they are not selling the katsu sandwich anymore?! Wtf?! I went last time and they ran out. Thats the one I wanna try the most. Don't get me wrong. The bul go Gi and other deli sandwiches are good, but this is disappointing to hear. I hope it comes back! I had to write a review just to say this. I bought the kim chee last time and thought it awesome. Better quality than most. It was close to some of the best kimchee I've had from la, NYC, and Korea

Hm...I was rather disappointed by the place. It's been sitting in my queue forever and I finally got a chance to try it out. The place is an ordinary looking convenience store, but with a deli counter. I wanted the katsu sandwich, but they were out of it so I went with their most popular item, the korean steak sandwich. I wanted it spicy and with kimchi.

Lo the behold, $11.84 later (and that's just for the sandwich, no chips or drinks), I got my sandwich. The kimchi came in a small condiment sized container instead of on the actual sandwich. The verdict? Well, there was plenty of meat, a bit of shredded iceberg, some cheddar and indistinguishable sauce (suppose to be chili garlic sauce and garlic aioli). There were also some pickled stuff in there, but it was hard to make it out.

My overall impression was that it was good, but not $11.84 good. I mean, if someone threw it in my direction, I wouldn't run the other way, but what they charge, especially considering it's the Mission, is pretty ridiculous. I don't mind paying $20 for a fois gras sandwich from Naked Lunch, but I just don't see the value of this place. Maybe they used great meat for the sandwich, but it certainly doesn't show. The meat was heavily marinated so I just tasted the sweetness of the meat and nothing else.

I'm gonna guess you're probably like me.

You've been here before, usually after 11pm, and just to snatch up a few 6-packs or tallboys before heading to a house party in the neighborhood.  While you were paying, you noticed there was a deli counter to the right.

"Oh."  You said to yourself, thinking little of it because it seems every other crusty Mission liquor store has some kind of odd deli counter, functional or not.

Then one day you decide that maybe you should actually try the deli because hey you've only ever bought beer here, you're tired of burritos and Ali Baba's sounds less than enticing.  Well, I've caught a live one here.

Get the Korean steak sandwich.  Just do it.  Disregard whatever anyone tells you, order it, keep an open mind and take it straight to the dome.  Personally I found it awesome and tasty to the point where I was eating every scrap that fell out of it and every sauce soaked chunk of bread I missed.  At $9 it's maybe a buck or two over what might normally suffice for a great sandwich but damn this thing is tasty.

I have the Diamond Heights (brisket) sandwich sitting on my counter right now and will eat it in about 50 minutes when my hunger strikes again.

There are some meat-filled food items that cause me to pity vegetarians and vegans...The Dolores and The Godfather are two such glorious examples.

Standards and ethics/whatever aside, it's meaty sandwiches like these two that make me realize the other half of San Francisco doesn't know what they are missing. OMG I fantasize about the sandwiches from Rhea's. Seriously, they are tasty.

The dutch crunch roll that houses the amazing ingredients of The Dolores is a major reason why I keep ordering that sandwich...that and everything else about it is delicious. The Godfather is amazing 'cause of ALL THE MEAT. Seriously...lots of Italian meat. I couldn't even finish it the last time and surrendered it to someone else....then watched regretfully as they ate the last 1/4 of it. Never again will I drink beer and eat a sandwich from Rheas, must save room in stomach for only sandwiches!! Another standout is The Reuben; yeah, it looks smaller than the others (since its not on a roll) but the sandwich-maker-gods jam pack it with deliciousness.

You get a lot of sandwich for the price, too. Which is great and has made me a loyal sandwich customer. I really don't consider eating sandwiches at other deli's 'cause I know that I'll get a lot of food for my money, and it's top quality ingredients.

The only thing that saddens me is how busy they get. I've waited about 40mins for my sandwich...spent most of the time staring longingly at the deli counter. On the plus side, the cashiers are funny and friendly. There's also the Phoenix bar across the way, so you could kill some time drinking.

Rhea's deli is just another reason why living in the Mission is awesome. Hmmm, I'm hungry now :(

Ho-Lee-Free-Kin-Sheet! If you're in the area, you must come to this deli and order the korean steak sandwich. Do not question it. Do not tell me that you like some other sandwich on the menu. Do not make any excuses. Just do it.

I heard about Rhea's quite some time ago from a friend. She constantly raved about this deli and told me to order the korean steak sandwich (or the katsu sandwich). So I decided to find this place. You wouldn't assume much just by looking around. The modest exterior makes Rhea's look like a typical mom and pop place. The sandwich menu is even hidden behind stacked beer cases. But don't be fooled. The sandwich was made with juicy Korean steak (bulgogi), homemade hot sauce, jalapenos, garlic aoli, onions and cheddar cheese on thick bread. It is absolutely heavenly! They sell other sandwiches too if you actually want to order something else. But why would you want to do that?

Additionally, they carry your typical liquor store items.

In short: Rhea's deli serves up a delicious sandwich. Don't miss out!

This liquor store sells amazing sanwiches on
Acme rolls.  There are about a dozen or more to choose from, with something for everyone.  We had their popular Korean BBQ Steak with spicy hot sauce and the Buffalo Pesto Chicken.  They were both delicious, containing meat, cheese, homemade aeoli and lettuce/veggies.  There are three people making them, yet there can be a wait.  Suggest going after 1:30 PM.  I suggest you not tell too many of your friends about this place until they expand or become a multi-store outfit.

A solid 4 stars.  The Korean Steak Sandwich does not disappoint.  It's packed with flavor and has a nice spicy kick to it.  I went mild and it was more than enough spiciness for me.  But if you like hotness, you can definitely up it to medium or HOT.  I don't know what it was, but the spiciness lingered well after I finished my sandwich.  It only went away after I got my hands on a stick of gum.  The organic Acme roll is good.  The pickled red onions, lettuce, and grilled onions are all delish.  I didn't specify a cheese and I guess the default is cheddar because that's what I got.  It wasn't bad.  There was a definite contrast in the texture of the cheese versus the tenderness of the meat, but it wasn't a deal breaker.  I think next time, if available, I'd opt for some melted provolone instead.  Oooh, now that sounds good!

The drive here from Mission Bay wasn't far, but definitely time-consuming.  I hate spending half my lunch hour driving so I'm not sure I'd come back on a work day.  I did score parking right in front, though.  (Thanks again, parking karma.)  I am really curious now to see how some gooey melted provolone would taste with the Korean steak.  Ahh, fuggit.  One more lunch hour won't hurt.  Thank you Yelp, for another great find.

With all the reviews about the Korean Steak Sandwich, I had to give it a try and it was pretty damn good.  Such an unassuming place to make great sandwiches but that's what makes this place good.  It takes a little while to get your sandwich made so prepare for that.  The sandwich is smaller than what I thought it was going to be but what it lacked in overall size it made up in taste as it was just the right amount of spice with great meat.  Will definitely stop by again and recommend to my friends.

This is for the Kimchee....tastes like my ancient family recipe, if I was korean and if I had any korean relatives that make kimchee in a bathtub in the backyard.  But, I have tried other ancient family recipes from my korean friends and this stuff is homemade goodness.

I have to stop being that beggar friend when grandma drops off her kimchee to her grandchildren.  So to Rhea's I go.  It's the closest I will get to having grandma's kimchee.

$9 plus change for a sandwich on a itty bitty little roll! Give me a break, it ain't even as good as reviewed. as for the kim chee, it's production line made, it comes out of a jar that's made locally, i thought i recognized the jar as one of the local 5 star hotels buys the same stuff! It ain't homemade! These 2 clerks have no idea what customer service means! it wasn't busy yet, 5 sandwiches came out before i got mine & i had to ask. $9, i expect it to feed 2 people, what a joke! shows you that their kim chee tastes like her ancient korean recepie, what production made recepie?NOT going back there, what a rip off! go somewhere where you have a choice of size, this place one sizeonly like it or not! Nowhere on their sign states what the size of the sandwich is. BUYER BEWARE!

I've said it before and I'll say it again...I LOVE SANDWICHES! And wow, Rhea's Deli makes some damn good ones!

My boyfriend & I ended up ordering the Korean BBQ Beef & Katsu Sandwiches (Medium Spicy for both) to go so we could eat it at SFO before our flight back home. I was a bit skeptical if the sandwiches would still be good a couple hours later but yup, Rhea's proved me wrong and was still mighty delish! I absolutely loved the sauces on both sandwiches (hello garlic aioli & tonkatsu sauce!) and the ACME Bread was chewy, crunchy & held everything together nicely. Both were equally amazing, but if I HAD to choose, I would prefer the Katsu Sandwich (only because I'm a sucker for spicy mayo).

The guys working the deli were awesome! Super friendly and easy to talk to. Oh yeah, it also didn't hurt that we didn't encounter a line during our visit ;) While Rhea's may be a bit more $$ than Ike's, I would still highly recommend it. Seriously...Japanese & Korean inspired sandwiches? They nailed it!

FYI, Rhea's Deli is located in a legit liquor store/market. I kind of liked how you could just order some sandwiches & pick up a couple of drinks/chips and pay for it all together. Just make sure to fill out the little paper next to the cashier to place your order ;)

God, I love how San Francisco has a liquor store with a deli counter on every other street corner. Most are good, but this is one of the best. They are oh so generous with the portions, and the meats are really tasty. Being a liquor store, there's tons of beverage options too, alcholic or not. This is also one of only two places in the U.S. that I've found that carries my Haribo Fruity Pasta candy, which is notable to only me but oh well. Dolores isn't too far of a walk, and a pleasant place to take your sandwiches and eat.

YEP.  I came here after hearing an interesting little buzz around town and seeing it featured on Check Please Bay Area (please don't judge me).  I love a good sandwich, I love trying new things especially on a good sandwich but I'm traumatized from eating Ike's.

Rhea's has a very interesting menu, some of which is intimidatingly interesting, but I got brave and tried the signature Korean Steak Sando and well it's like the best idea I've ever had.

The bread is awesome, it will not tear up the roof of your mouth. The steak is perfectly seasoned and complimented with a yummy sauce and kim chi.  I also got to choose my spice level.  I picky the spiciest and it was very mangeable.  The sandwich looks pretty too.  I love pulling apart 2 halves to see reveal the layering of ingredients.

There is also a great selection of chips and drinks in the market.  You can sit at the bar and people watch through the window or you can sit outside on their benches.

YUM. A small convenience store paired with an unassuming deli on the side that serves up huge sandwiches piled high with deliciousness. Also available is their homemade kimchi that comes in mason jars.

The Katsu (pork or chicken both available) sandwich is a crunchy, meaty, beauty of a mess layered in between beds of fresh, colorful slaw and enveloped in a deliciously chewy crackly soft Acme roll. The Korean steak is also a winner - tender, flavorful bulgolgi piled high with kimchi and cheddar and also comes in an Acme roll. You can choose your level of spice - and spicy definitely has a delicious kick to it.

Definitely call your order in ahead of time (30-40 minutes on a weekend, when you're definitely not going to be the only one with the brilliant idea to nurse your hangover at Rhea's).

Also, ~$8-9 for a sandwich? JESUS. Luckily though, it's kinda worth it.

I just started cheating on Deli Board with Rhea's....ummm, these guys are good.  Still love Deli Board but Rhea's has some amazing sando's that have local and asian influences that are a nice change from your typical deli sandwiches.  Top sandwiches for me in this order are the Korean Steak, Gargamel & the Dolores.  The marinate on the steak (korean) and chicken (gargamel) are great.  I could take the meats out and eat them with rice...because that's what I want to do with all good meats...I'm filipino.

Their complete unpretentiousness (for their level of deliciousness) is refreshing.

Has this place ever been on http://scanwiches.com? Probably not, cuz the sheer awesomeness of their sandwiches would BREAK THE MACHINE.

The chicken/pork katsu sandie is my favorite. That slaw is so fresh and crunchy. The spicy/sweet mayo is wonderfully unctuous on the tongue after all the pleasantly gritty panko, as a first year art student would scream: JUXTAPOSITION! I forget which bread we had it on but it was fresh and crusty. Yum.

Yesterday I got the Han Solo (zucchini, avocado, greens, some yummy cheese, and garlic aioli) but couldn't finish, the other half is our fridge right now and I'll probably eat it after I write this review.

Here's what you do, go into the deli, pick up a sandwich order form, fill it out, and then wait for your name to be called.

The sandwiches are a perfect size, too--- generous but not overstuffed. Very balanced.

Also, the other day my fiance saw A-1 (the rapper) eating there. So cool, rappers eat sandwiches too.

None of the sandwiches were there that we wanted, and I'm not talking about what had sold out.  There wasn't a single breaded chicken sandwich in the place!  Then after we place the order and pay we were told it was a 30 minute wait, wish they would have told us before hand.

The staff was very friendly, the beverage and chocolate/candy selection is  great, however, the Boars Head turkey sandwich I got was good but not worth the wait.  I wanted what they were known for and it wasn't sold out, there was some other "in between kitchens" thing we were told.

Wish we made the trip in the heat for a good reason not a typical Boars Head deli hero that took 30 minutes to make.   Seriously people that kind of sandwich is sold everywhere and made in 5 minutes.

The steak sandwich was good, but again, not worth the wait.  Perhaps next time.  Also, on a hot day PLEASE open the windows, if they do open so people can eat with some air.

    - best sandwich hands down is the korean steak sandwich.

    - recommend phoning in the order ahead of time

    - limited seating at the counter.

Such an amazing deli.  I absolutely love their sandwiches and the fact that they deliver makes for a perfect lazy weekend day.  The boar's head meats and cheeses paired with acme bread makes for a tasty combo that comforts the taste buds and the soul.

I am a huge fan of the chicken katsu but am bummed it is on a "hiatus" bring back chicken katsu and save the world :)

Dude. The vegetarian (vegan if you skip the aioli) BBQ "Chicken wing" sandwich is the shit. Better than any vegan option at Ike's. There. I said it. I am HOOKED! And the kimchee...oh, my! Super cheap and walking distance from my house too. I win!

Initially, I thought this place was just an ordinary liquor store.

Wrong...there is also a deli inside here as well.

Only open for lunch, the unique deli makes signature sandwiches with great names of some of the neighboring streets of our beloved city. Names of sandwiches like Noe Street, Valencia Street and Cunningham Place make this deli very utmost and pleasing on my future visit(s).

On this visit on my debut, you need to place your order on a sheet on what you want on your sandwich. I chose the popular Korean Steak Sandwich. For $8.99, the sandwich had a thinly sliced rib-eye steak marinated and grilled with a Korean twist, with grilled onion, cheese, lettuce, a tangy garlic aioli sauce and a spicy chili sauce in a toasted Acme Roll. This is a great tasting sandwich with the entire key ingredients blended well together. This hot sandwich must be eaten immediately.

Depending the time of the day, the wait for sandwich can take up to 15-20 minutes to prepare. While waiting, the entertaining bunch of happy workers behind the deli were serenading to any songs played on KISS FM while making our sandwiches. "I just hope they don't pursue a singing career and quit their day job at Rhea's Deli!"

They also have a good selection of beverages and beers at reasonable price.

I like my sandwich from here. You can also call in your sandwich(s) ahead of time to avoid the long wait.
