5 reviews for Reyes Deli & Grocery
Reyes is for real. Reyes is, indeed, kingly. On a recent visit, there was no charge for two jalapenos. "I'll charge you when you buy a pound," said the man behind the counter. They boast decent prices on a good selection of basics: milk, eggs, corn tortillas, cilantro, beer, beans, bread. It is very clean and the staff is very kind. They have an interesting array of panes dulces, both fresh and pre-bagged. The sandwiches are tasty. I marvel over the hand-packed and hand-labelled Ziploc bags of dried chilies: ancho, guajillo, costeno. There is always something there that I buy because I have no idea what it is.
On the weekends, there are three types of tamal. Rajas, salsa verde and mole. Eating one fresh at 8am on Sunday morning was heavenly. They freeze well, but are certainly best eaten when freshly steamed. The tacos, I haven't had. I love Reyes Market. It is a place to which I feel good about giving my money in exchange for their food.
Just because I feel like updating the world to what's going on with Reyes, there's a new experiment going on. And the experiment is tamales. Not the pre-frozen, greasy kind that seem to popular as they're easy, but delicious fresh ones.
They're only available on the weekends though. And despite making 150, they were sold out of them by 11:30 AM. Pretty impressive.
Stay tuned to myself, Danny and Abby for all your Reyes news, as there's more in store fo' sho.

It took seven months, but they're open again. Good thing too, I was getting hungry.

Hooray! Reyes is back.
After 7 months, they've rebuilt and are better, stronger, faster. Or rather, cleaner, opener, grillier (Yes, it's a word. I made it up just now.). Grillier as in they now have a printed menu (that you can take home and order from) and it includes much more than tacos (which is the only thing I thought they made before). And the tacos? They are tasty. So is the super quesadilla (cape not included).
(Oh, also? It's a bodega/deli. So it has random household items and generic food. But it also has Mexican products which is good if you like to make your own guacamole, pozole, tacos, salsa, etc.)
Welcome back, Reyes. I missed you!
This is a true "neighborhood" bodega--everyone calls the owners "primo," and they are the nicest guys you'd ever want to meet, unlike the creepy owners of other such stores. Their kids even help out in the store. General grocery but mostly it boasts a selection of food from Mexico--sweet breads, Mexican puddings, candies, seasonings, fruit, etc.
Very reasonably priced, the best on 4th avenue by far.
It is now much cleaner than its days before the fire, and has a take- out menu featuring Mexican selection but also sandwiches, healthy salad options and really amazing fruit shakes.
Open until midnight.
As Adam mentioned, they are indeed open again, serving sandwiches, dry goods and beer.
Most importantly? They deliver now. Once the grill is up, all grilled food will be available for delivery, too.
Excellent.
