Came here for Halloween night (late around 2AM) and so I can't say anything about the dinner ambiance or food. This is only for the bar aspect of Revel.
Pretty good crowd. My friends and I met other girls while we were waiting for the bathrooms. They were from Miami and I totally wish we had gotten to spend more time with them during their visit to NYC. We totally hit it off and hung out with them a large part of the night. Go figure we would meet other girls and not guys - haha.
The drinks were good and I had a good time dancing. I liked the decor (the idea of being outside while you are inside). It's not new and it is not done as well as The Park, but it was still pretty.
Basically, I was drunk for most of the time. But, I did have fun and if you are with a group of your friends, you will definitely have fun too.
What a maze.
First: You walk in and think, "pub, young professionals, post-frat."
Second: Walk a little further to the back, "beautiful patio, trees and lots of seating, what a surprise!"
Third: Peak around the corner, "dining area, a lot more intimate, slower pace."
I loved the diversity in its ambiance and I think it sets a variety of playgrounds for different crowds. I was here during the wee-hours so I don't have much to say about their food. But as far as drinks and vibe.. 4 stars up!
I'm torn between a 3 and 4 star but I'll be generous.
Revel is a decent place to stop for lunch when you're in the area. I realize that I just gave to vaguest possible description but that is kind of what Revel is to me. It's fine. It's nice. The food is good, but not great. The patio is gorgeous and I adore exposed brick so that makes up for my sickly sweet mojito that tasted so off I actually gave it to my friend to finish. Yes, you heard me right...I gave away my alcoholic drink rather than finishing it because I disliked it so much. The staff is always very nice if not a teensy bit clubby/trashy...I mean a skin tight mini-dress and fake boobs is always good but when i'm wearing cut-offs and a tank top that girl is just taking away all my attention!
Really, you're going here for the ambiance...it's really quite beautiful. If they could master their food and cocktails then it would be impossible to beat but for now they let the other spots have a chance.
Great late night spot. Stopped off on our way to meet friends at another location. Had not been here before. Enjoyed the decor, indoor tree's in this district were a nice change to other spots.
Did not get to eat, but it will be worth a stop next time we are in NY.
It was a quiet night, but absolutely perfect for dinner for two. The back covered garden area was lovely and the staff was down to earth and fun. The prefix menu was excellent and we had Chad (who happened to be a sommelier working that night) select a wine for us. I've only been once, but I'm definitely going back. Perhaps I'll try later in the evening for cocktails at the bar.
Best meal I had when I visited NY. The waiter reccommended the apple and cheese ravioli, which I would never have thought to order, but they were amazing. I couldnt get enough. The fish we had was grilled perfectly and I was a big fan of the 3 sauce options that came with the dish. The Vibe was fun and lively but not too overwhelming The only reason for the 4 stars instead of 5 was we felt a bit rushed toward the end, as they had sat us right in the middle of what would become the dance floor
Came here after Hotel Gansevoort. What attracted us to the spot was the dining area which is essentially outside with a green plant wall. The mood and setting makes up for anything this place lacks.
We shared:
-The Beef Tartar that came with salted chips which was really good, and a surprisingly huge portion for an appetizer. Triple the size of a normal tuna tartar.
-The Lamb, but Allen and Delancey does this dish better. Enjoyed the 3 dipping sauces.
-Black Tagliolini with calamari, clams and scallops, cherry tomatoes--a bit too salty--but liked that they cut the pasta so I could properly eat in front of my date without slurping
-Zucchini sauteed with parmesan gratin--delish--and technically a huge side of vegetables. We only got through 1/3 of it. But it was good especially with the cheese.
Drinks--
-Passion Fruit Martini-- best Ive had
-Bottle of Plozner Pinot Grigio--white wine, but has hint of pink because of the maceration of the grape skins--definitely worth getting
I've been to Revel MANY times. For drinks, apps, dinner, you name it. It has a little bit of everything for everyone. You can go grab a seat at the bar and watch the game, take a date there, grab dinner with friends, have an amazing champagne brunch in the garden, or go with the guys for steaks. I recently hosted a birthday party for 30 people in Revel's Red Room and the staff did an amazing job. Joel the GM took very good care of us, there was never an empty wine glass and they prepared two huge cheese and roasted vegetable plates for guests. The music was too soft - and they turned it immediately, people wanted to make speeches, and they lowered it. The service was great, food good and thus I highly recommend you go to Revel for whatever occasion or whatever you are in the mood for.
To give a balanced review, the downsides are the prices (but after all you are in a super prime location so they fit with the hood) and to get to the dining room you have to squeeze through the bar area which can be crowded. The place is very high energy so I would not recommend you bring your grandmother here.
Ambience is the only thing this place (sort of) has. Came for brunch. Did the 2 cocktail brunch special. Food was sub par. Bloody marys were inconsistent.
Good spot for post-dinner drinks. Was here around 1am on a Thursday night. Good crowd, but not crowded. Perfect mix of lively and mellow. The back patio area -- complete with trees, which was really cool -- is a great place to sit and chill with your cocktails. I liked it a lot.
Pretty good atmosphere but the food was nothing to write home about. In a city full of awesome restaurants, I'd recommend skipping it.
Adorable patio. Fantastic wine. The food is okay, but the ambiance and the wine make up for it.
This place makes you want to have a Statement of the Relationship conversation. Its so lovely you expect your man to propose and when he doesn't you think, "Where are we going? Why are you taking me here and not telling me how special and amazing I am? Where is my diamond ring?"
If you are ready to be monogamous or have some other big announcement, I highly recommend this place.
Right beside busy Paradou during brunch time hours is the lovely, easily overlooked Revel, we were given a 15 minute wait at Paradou and after 15 minutes we were told another 10 minutes. I was getting tired of standing around so we looked over and saw a sign w/ a prix fixe brunch special, $24, 2 cocktails and an brunch entre. I can dig it, it's the normal fare, at this point I just want my PIC to shut up and quit her yapping. We're given a 25 minute wait but that's cool b/c there's a nice bar area where we practice our newly invented hobby: extreme chillin' where we feverishly chill, to the point of exhaustion.
I sat at the bar completely content with waiting since it was so pretty. Exposed brick... even a tree with a little bird house. It would've been a perfect place to pimp. I'm just sorry I didn't come here on a date, totally impressive looking guys and dolls! I will definitely be back with a person in the "mah boo" category.
I had the burger, which was very, very, filling. The sangria was good and the bloody mary was a little wack, I wanted something more spicey. The service was good, although the waiter did keep disappearing which was getting annoying when we were trying to pay our bill so we could go and be Swayze (as in "ghost").
The ambiance was lovely with the high ceilings, nice lighting, and spacious setting. Dinner was not bad, but not the best.
steak - pretty good with 3 different dipping sauces
seafood risotto - had pieces of shrimp, and a big shrimp...just ok
Apple sauce ravioli - probably my favorite that night. Pretty darn good
Foie gras ravioli - pretty good, but I like the apple sauce ravioli better
The service was excellent. However, there's only ONE toilet for the ladies room. Don't wait til the last minute to use the restroom, cause you will be waiting atleast 10 minutes.
Revel has dual (triple?) personalities: the lively bar scene, the chill "courtyard" dining under the retractable roof and trees with tiny white lights, and the gauche-red banquet seating where I think the "adults" sit.
This place was even better before it had a name, and if you knew it then, then you can easily transport yourself back there in your mind and ignore the weirdos who now patron the joint at times.
It's large enough to hold a party for any size group and there's hardly ever a wait or line to get in. There is often a wait for a table of at least 15 minutes.
The consistencies year-long are great drink mixing, chill environment and guaranteed entry even on the busiest mpd night.
p.s. A few words about the bathroom situation: one stall for chicas and 2 stalls for chicos, wtf? Seriously, expect to nearly wet yourself anytime after 10pm or expect to have a good-looking gent watch the door as you use the 2-stalled mens' room.
I never heard of this place until I searched for meatpacking district restaurants online. I've only been once but I'm looking for an excuse to go back. I love the covered garden with lighting in the back - all the ambiance of a garden without the mosquitoes (granted it was covered when I went, I understand it does open up in the summer).
The menu was similar to Fig & Olive down the street - vaguely Italian/mediteranean but without as many vegetarian options. However, the arugula and pear salad and mushroom pasta dish I had were excellent.
Recession special until 7:30 pm, with $5 draft and $5 mixed drinks.
There is a long L-shaped bar, with a lot of space to mill around with friends. They have an awesome, thin, crisp, brick-oven margherita pizza. The garden in back is beautiful. There's a retractable roof, so in the winter, it's closed and cozy.
The bartender, Jen, is super friendly.
too expensive for me. Hopefully someday I might be able to afford it.
It's a nice place though and in a nice neighborhood. Like the inside garden.
This place....omgggg
good for ..... a beer or a nightcap
not good for .... Dinner. food of any kind
Reason: pricey and is simply not amazing...
my vegetarian friend ordered something and some european waitress with broken english stressed that it was vegetarian.....my friend asked another waiter and he said the dish was vegetatarian too...turns out that the dish had fois gras in it
and my friend ate it... For her whole life she was vegetarian they tricked her into eating liver !!!
The girl was of course fired but ever since then we never came back here ever...
The low score is based on the overpriced, unimpressive food and the poor selection and management of staff
I gave 2 stars because the place might be nice just for a drink... for dinner, forget it. Food is below average and overpriced, and you have to wait a long time for it.
Definetely NOT the best place for a nice dinner around meatpacking or the west village.
What can one month's rent buy you in the Meatpacking District? A wedding reception dinner for 20. Revel is a decent size space that prides itself on its year round garden. This was my second time to the place, the first being a Halloween party in 2008 by bustamove nyc.
The venue, chosen by the bride, turned out to be the perfect spot for the reception. The garden area sits around 40, so our group took up nearly half the space. The bride and groom prearranged a special pre-fixe menu for the occasion. As the only vegetarian, I had a slightly different meal from the rest. For my appetizer, I had polenta fritters with ratatouille; the main course was a rice dish with mixed vegetables; and for dessert, I had crème brulee.
My appetizer was delicious. It was a little on the salty side, but the ratatouille balanced it nicely. The entrée was average; once again it could have come from my kitchen sans recipe. The crème brulee was good, but I've had better. The second dessert option was panacotta. One word regarding it: outstanding! I am a newb in the world of panacotta, but my taste buds were mighty impressed. I also tried the third dessert option--tiramisu; once again, very good.
The best part about Revel is the crowd. Despite the fact it is located in über trendy Meatpacking, the vibe is much different than that of its neighbors. The people are much more down-to-earth and friendly; the aura of pretentiousness is not there like in the majority of places in Meatpacking. Plus, the manager went to great lengths to ensure our party was happy. The dinner was a success; everyone left full and happy.
Negatives include the women's bathroom; there is one stall and the mirror is outside restroom. Also, the space was about half full on a Friday evening and never picked up. We stayed until 2am or later.
During both visits to Revel, the garden was enclosed with a retractable roof due to the season. With summertime right around the corner, I can think of nothing better than waking up on a gorgeous Sunday morning and heading over to Revel to enjoy Brunch in their open garden.
Got here around 1130pm on a Saturday night.
It was packed.
Somehow we managed to get seats right along the bar! (a miracle i know!).
The drinks here were fabulous, and the crowd was great. There was none of this pretencious stuff happening... everyone seemed like they were just there for a good time. I have no complaints about the place... not to mention, the cute bartender that was working right in front of us!
While summer is clearly over, happy hours shouldn'e be! A friend recommended this place for its $5 TYKU cocktails and I dropped by with some coworkers. It would normally be too chilly to dine outdoors but with the retractable roof in the charming garden area, this place was the best of both worlds. I was pleasantly surprised that great drink specials came with a place that had such an inviting ambiance! We stayed long past happy hour, and everyone had a pretty hard morning the next day;)
Met a nice lady here for drinks, which were good, generous pours. Minus one star for restricting the back patio to diners only. Minus another star for the schmuck out on the sidewalk looking at himself in the window reflection, pretending to smoke a cigarette.
Jeez, what a scene. I think this is why I'm moving to Brooklyn.
Plus one star 'cuz the music sounded like my CD collection.
If you want to hang out in the meat packing district and you don't want to pay 300+ for bottle service then this is the best bar for you in my humble opinion. It has just enough pretension to be "cool" but is mellow enough that you can meet real people. The retractable glass roof makes it unique.
Jason is my favorite bartender there and he deserves some props!
My only complaint is that I liked it better when they didn't serve food and they didn't rope off the back patio.
As I live near the meatpacking I will be there often.
I wasn't impressed. Yes, Revel, your waitstaff was very friendly, but you were mostly amiss on my night. It took my dinner party of 12 an absurdly long amount of time to receive our appetizers, and then our main courses immediately followed, and those left much to be desired, as well. Thought, my pistachio-encrusted salmon was pretty darn good, my friend's steak was rubbery and not all that flavorful. The Macaroni was good, but something I could have done on my own at home. The sides of seasoned fries, spinach, and bok choi were good, but not for what we paid, much like the entire meal. The decadent (but lightly portioned) deserts were your meal's one semi-redeeming segment. Surely, all this was not worth the $90/person.
Unfortunately, it was rather chilly on my night, so the roof wasn't open. Perhaps you'd get another star for that next time.
I love coming here for drinks b/c of the atmosphere. Good yet laid back crowd...and the place has a patio (enclosed when weather is not so good) that is open after dinner service.
Don't go for dinner though. The food is just average.
Only reviewing this one for drinks....
Lovely place. It has an enormously long L shaped bar that just goes on forever. It's covered in copper, and provides a perfect union from the lively street scape to the sweet little garden out back.
One problem was that the place smelled totally like meat; salty, fresh grilled, slightly charred meat. But I think this is a small price to pay for a lovely, tranquil spot to order some Malbec and enjoy a lovely NYC evening. Centrally located if you want to head out for drinks to all the places nearby.
Nice low-key garden scene. Decent drinks. Come here with coworkers on weeknights. They've caught onto the fact that my trademark "vodka cranberries" are actually cranberry sodas, so they order rounds of girly cocktails with the caveat that I drink with them. Actually, I think the guys are just using me as an excuse to get fruity drinks. On a bad night, we work down the entire cocktail menu. Among the better: French Fizz. Among the worst: Orange Crush with raspberries (sounds good but everyone hated it)
Cocktails are around $12.
Oh my frickin' Gawd how much did I love Revel? More specifically, how much did I love our waiter who kept giving us free glasses of wine after our bottle had run dry? I mean, I knew that me and my posse were a good looking group of females but sheesh!
So anyway I'd love to tell you what we ate (which was a lot) but unfortunately I was wasted by the time I got there after hitting up 7 events in a mere 3 hours. What I will tell you is that EVERYTHING WAS DELICIOUS.
Also, such hot decor. Actually, no. Such a hot space! You feel like you're eating outside. Which you sort of are, sorta. It's hard to explain (you'll just have to go and visit yourself!). I am not the biggest fan of tons of exposed brick, but Revel pulls it off perfectly. It didn't feel like all of those wine bars that popped up in the late 80's (I wasn't even double digits yet but mother dearest has told me stories).
Definitely, without a doubt, am going back again.
Cheers!
Would like to return here. Saturday night scene, still pretty low key. Open back area with half cover-thing. It had rained so some ppl might've left because of that, but we just sat in slight dampness.
Disagree on date spot. at least that late in the game, the music was too loud. fun tho.
I love the space! I love the garden feel in the back with the exposed brick! It has a bar that you walk into and I feel that the drinks are made well. I went on a Fri night and found that it wasn't too crowded. I don't think I would eat here for dinner but if it's a date, a chance to meet up with friends or something of this nature - this will definitely impress others!
I was visiting the city from SF--just a quick trip home to see the family. I met up with a bunch of friends for some drinks after a full day of SoHo shopping on a hot June day. The was the perfect was to relax.
The space is really cute and the bartenders are friendly and quite goodlooking. I love the restaurant area in the back that seems like it's outdoors but is actually completely covered. The front is wide open so the air from outside circulates and makes the back room feel really spacious. We went on a Monday, so it wasn't super crowded, which is the reason why I love going out on Mondays!
The cocktails are a little on the expensive side but so delicious and creative that they are worth the extra bucks.
I met some friends for drinks in April. I was immediately impressed with the atmosphere. There's a huge (by NYC standards) garden space with retractable roof, pebble flooring and exposed brick. It's a place to bring a date for early drinks and impress the out-of-towners. Also key was the super nice female bartender. Usually girl bartenders are bitchy to me and she was chatty and completely sweet. (I was there around 6 on a Tuesday). I didn't want to get too crunk and make the usual ass out of myself, so I filled up on the thin-crust pizza at the bar. It was quite good. This place is bling. I'd go back.
While this place looks charming, fun and romantic from the outside...beware. The wait staff is surly (and stupid) and you'd have more chance of getting service at a table if you faked a heart attack.
On a Wednesday night, my room mate and I decided to eat dinner in the MPD; we looked at a couple of the usual suspects, but they were packed so we strolled over to Revel. The bar wasn't busy, and there were a ton of empty tables in the garden area. If I see a completely dead restaurant (like Revel was on a Wednesday) I won't go in and dine. A very empty place (only one table was occupied) is a bad sign to me. Anyway, my roomie, whose a vegetarian, found a couple of things to eat on the over priced menu, so we go in.
Once seated, we look over the menu. That's when I spot the most ridiculous item I have ever seen on a menu. To whit, " a minimum of $30 per customer if seated in the garden." EXCUSE ME?! I've eaten all over the place; from v. expensive to crap dives and had never seen anything like this; a command that I MUST spend $30 or can't dine here.
We wave over the waitress and ask her if this is so, her reply was classic. She looked at us and said, "I don't know, I just work here."
WTF! She wouldn't give us a straight answer after that statement, then waltzed away. My roomie and I looked at each, finished our drinks and split. We had a much nicer and cheaper dinner at 5Ninth- and the atmosphere was more fun too.
Revel is a pretentious piece of crap. It's getting one star for the pretty plants.
[My 200th Yelp Review! Cheers!]
While I'm not much of a bar-hopper (I'm more of a lounge type...) Revel wasn't all too bad. We hit it up at about 12am on a Saturday night.
Great place for drinks- hardly any seating, though. Great for bumping in to people and chatting... striking up conversations hardly ever happens in DC because they're too busy being cliquey and talking about politics and class divide. I made friends with a big, fat, Tony Soprano type who wanted us to sit down and "eat, EAT, damnit" but was unsuccessful convincing my friends.
Would I go back? Maybe just for memories.
I would only give this little place three stars but the bartender was superb. This is a really cute place to grab a drink and apps before heading out to dinner. I can't comment on the food but again, the bartender was really cool.
This is a great date place.
I helped celebrate my friend's birthday at Revel. It was quite lovely.
I had the NY Sirloin. It was really good and big enough to give everyone at the table a nibble as well. Others had the swordfish and lobster spaghetti. Raves on the swordfish, but only oks on the lobster spaghetti.
You have to be willing to part with a bit of cash as the meals are all a la carte.
I have to give special kudos to the restaurant and our waiter because they let us bring in a tart from outside and even served it up as if it were their own. Thanks, Chef!
Can't wait to bring Amy C. here the next time she visits. I think she'll love it!
PS - Try the Peach Fizz drink with St Germain. Scrumptious!!
What a Cool Space in the MPD! I really liked the exposed brick walls, tree-lined open back patio and the overall openness of the space.
I went with friends just for drinks - Ok, A LOT Of Drinks and had a great time. With so much alcohol & Patron shots, how could I not?
But seriously, I dig the space and overall vibe of the place and after taking a look at the Menu and other reviews, I will definitely be back to give the Food a try and be sure to update this review...
i have always had great service and great food and some interesting drinks here. everything is fresh and the staff is attentive. The space is absolutely gorgeous. i have never been here when its crowded so i cant vouch for that
