Checked out Resurrection for brunch this morning. As my friends and I discussed the politics of squatters, and why they suck, we enjoyed a few items off the varied and veggie-friendly menu. While I typically scoff at scones, I found their black currant scone with creme fraiche and fruit preserves to be the first scone I'd ever consider paying money for. I'll keep stealing the less inferior ones.

Since I've been on a steak kick lately, I opted for the Steak (and Eggs) Frites. The grilled hanger meat came with perfectly runny sunny-side-up eggs and the hand cut fries were of the crispy, less potato filled variety. While it's not my favorite fry, I thoroughly enjoyed theirs.

My friend ordered the roasted cauliflower dish with sweet and sour onions. Yo, this was great. As were the 'Taters and 'Snips: crispy potatoes and parsnips with queso fresco and romesco sauce.  Double win there.

The biscuits and gravy looked fantastic, but my friend threatened to cut me if I dared dig in. They must have been good.

Overall, fantastic brunch menu (they even have huevos rancheros!) and I can't wait to try more. Brendan, if you're reading this, could you please make a beef stew and call me when it's ready?

My Yelp game has gotten a bit dusty. I wanted to Brett Favre today (come out of retirement) for my favorite losing Quarterback of the day.

I recently went to Resurrection Ale House after the co-pilot for the evening suggested it in lieu of my repetitious optionery.

I liked Yello Bar. Part of the reason I liked Yello Bar was that nobody else seemed to. They made a damn good steak salad, Hot & Honey wings, and I liked the fact that I could nerd out on my computer and watch a football game AT the same time (though I never actually did this).

With the name-flip, I kind of expected what happened when the UPN changed their name to the WB: same great Moesha-filled programming, just a new name. I was wrong.

Resurrection is a appropo name. This place was bustling, and people that seemed to stretch beyond the confines of the neighborhood or Toll Brothers fortress-from-diversity across the street. People were loud, talking over the mediocre "Adult Top 40" music. On top of that, TV's were no longer the center of attention. I like the new marble tables, the new lights, and I think the schwag on the walls stayed the same (imagining a "how much for everything?" conversation recently).

I was impressed with the selection of drafts. Nationwide, an assortment of breweries, and covering the whole spectrum of ales, lagers and so forth. Moreover, the menu looked clever. Besides Sansom Street Oyster House (see review), I know nowhere in the city that serves a good oyster "sammie" (as the menu and some star Yelpers say).

I had the fried chicken, and the crispy honey soaked breading was better than any non-homemade fried chicken I've ever had. There weren't too many bones, and the potato salad was a much preferred accompaniment than fries. Speaking of fries, this place has thee best homemade ketchup evar (curry-based). I loved all of it, and the portions were big enough to accommodate a hungry person, but not all "tunzafun" either. The service was six o'clock straight. Nothing more, nothing less. Considering how crowded the joint was, I think this is a win.

Oddly enough, I think what I liked least was the beers - blame me and my tastes, not the options. Either way, I'm going back soon. This is a nice little secret.

Let's get it straight, folks. The food sucks. I'm sorry. Let me start off with a positive. The beer list is pretty good. After four times here, I've eaten enough from the menu and consumed a number of different drinks (giving them the benefit of each piling doubt) to safely say that I might be back for drinks. But the food f*cking sucks.

The monte cristo is a pathetic attempt, weak in flavor and dryer than my napkin. The oyster sandwich is a nice try.

But the soup...I've had two different soups here. The first was ok. Simply ok.

The second was salty brown water in a cup for $5. Thanks, but give me some substance to this broth. It was basically heated beef stock from a box. So I asked if it came with bread to dunk. Because for f*ck's sake it should come with a bag of crackers if not some bread. Half the restaurants in town will give you ten loaves of bread for free. Not this place.

They brought me out a single slice of bread. A pathetic little patty of toasted dough on a plate. $1. One slice of bread. $1.

Wait. Keep reading because I'm going to repeat that.

One slice of bread for $1.

Thanks for throwing me a bone, kids. I needed something to soak up my salty water. That single slice of bread that I paid a dollar for was exactly what I needed. Too bad I had to pay a dollar for that single slice bread.

Now let me get back to the weakest of all sauces known to man. I was that guy who needed change because the bills I had were way too big for the check. Well, the waitress decides to round up the check amount to the nearest dollar, and bring out the rest. If you're not good at math (more importantly word problems), it basically means she took the coin part of my change for herself and gave me the bills. I hate when places do this. It's bad practice to assume that the customer doesn't want all their due change, even if you both can assume that the customer will be leaving a tip. Because when you steal (because that's what you're trying to do) money from the customer, you can be damn sure that what ever pittance the customer leaves behind is a mark of true forgiveness, maybe a little pity for your horrible skills in waiting, but definitely an undue blessing for you. That sort of behavior is just rude. You're no different from the cashier at 7-11 who automatically keeps the 4 cents you should have gotten back from your Slurpee purchase, which you would have surely put in the give a penny, take a penny, but now you can't because he didn't even give you the choice.

Waitress, you didn't even give me a choice to offer you my change. You simply stole it from me, along with $1 for a single pathetic slice of bread. Put my tip toward the tuition on a crash course in being cordial. Then take the advanced course in applied mathematics (food service edition). Or just buy a calculator. And go apologize to the few friends you have left. They probably deserve it.

I have been a tremendous slacker when it comes to Yelp reviews. It's only fitting that Resurrection was the place to revive my interest and get me reviewing again.

Let's start with the environment.  The space is open and airy, and the window opening out to Grey's Ferry makes it feel larger than it is.  I've seen some complaints about noise and overcrowding, but neither of those was a problem on the Monday that I visited.  The music was pleasant, if a little theme-y, and at no point did it feel like it interrupted the meal.

And the meal?  Yes.  Delicious.  The pickled fruit/veggie plate and the corn cakes provided an opening burst of clean and exciting flavors.  The Miatake Mushroom entree and the Twice Fried Chicken were both fantastic as well, and reasonably priced to boot.  It's nice to see the emphasis placed a little more heavily on the menu when compared to Local44, but the beer list is definitely solid, with a promise of future rotating craft and seasonal beers on draught in addition to a stable of excellent bottled beer.

It looks like another home run from Brendan and Leigh and I look forward to rediscovering Resurrection as it's menu and beer list evolve.  Approve.

Dammit, Brendan, you're going to make me go broke.

The owners of Memphis Taproom and Local 44 opened this little gem, and I'm in love.

I went opening night, and it was PACKED (I biked by last night and again, packed). But oddly enough, for being dimly lit, nighttime, and full, it seemed open and airy. The beer was great, the food was great, the staff was great. People were extremely helpful and happy to be, despite the crowd five strong at the bar waiting to order. They were also handing out free "samples" of key menu items.

I will definitely be back here. Especially because Brendan recognized me from Local 44 and came to say hi (I paid entirely in quarters, once, and he didn't even care).

OH OH OH!
Just be aware, both Local 44 and Resurrection use peanut oil. I don't know if Memphis does, but I'd watch out if you have a peanut allergy.

Luckily, beers are peanut free!

Another home-run hit for Brendan and Leigh. They have a way of putting the perfect joint in the perfect neighborhood. Airy space with a flare for architectural detail (I love the light fixtures and the stained glass and antique mirrors on the wall) and a cozy seating layout.

And I love the slightly more upscale and yet still terribly homey menu. Homemade pickles? yes please. Springy corncakes with real corn kernals, and understated roasted red pepper sauce and queso fresco? Perfect. And the texture on the maitake mushroom cannot be beat.

Beer, I don't need to tell you about. Just look at their impressive and rotating tap list. And the service is spot on - prompt but not pushy, friendly without being syrupy, and knowledgeable and accommodating. Something tells me I'll be riding the 64 bus more often.

The undersized yet perky younger sister of Memphis Taproom and Local 44.  I experienced this debutante on her opening night.

The initial draught list was impressive and inexpensive: the uber-rare Cantillon Cuvee de Champions for $7, Russian River Pliny (the f'kin) Elder for $5, and a plethora of others in the $4-5 range.  The gorgonzola with savory biscotti and mushroom bruschetta were also a treat - I look forward to exploring the full menu in depth.

I am surprised however that they are open for lunch during the week given the lack of (non-narcotic-related) commerce in the area.

The SWCC neighborhood has a new gem in Resurrection Ale House.  It will be on my regular rotation, along with the Sidecar and many others.

Its a tiny little place and try not to blink whilst walking there...you might mistake it for someone's house with a nice bay window!

We had wanted to go here since Monica dug it so. So, off we went in our usual saturday hunger. My friend and I are bad at stocking our fridges so often we are ravenous.

We shared the beet salad with japanese nuances. It was fresh and tasty, but not really noteworthy.

Sara had one of the brunch options a fluffy omelet, so fluffy it was mousse like, with manchego and chorizo.

I had the twice fried chicken. DO NOT ORDER THIS ON A FIRST DATE LADIES...unless the dude you are with is into you licking your fingers and licking the plate and picking up the fragments of delicious crunchyness. This is some damn good fried chicken. It is drizzled in a wondrous honey as well. I am a sucker for good honey. It is served with a warm german potato salad that could use a bit more dressing and or flavor.

Oh and a coke is 2.50 and they don't give free refills, and when you order a second one, be careful an olive might be floating in it!

The food was lovely, the service was a little dodgy, the menu is great and we can even bring our vegetarian friends here!

just watch out for olives!

oh and yeah its audrey claire loud.....even when its slow!

First time to Resurrection on Friday...and the place was JAMMED, definitely a good sign of what was to come, but if you are starving hungry and don't get seated right away you should prepare to wait a bit. I wouldn't come here with a big group (more than 4) on a weekend.

The twice fried chicken and the burger were super tasty. I don't know if I'd get the pickled veggies again, but it was a nice starter.

The twice fried chicken was super tasty. (had to put that in again)

On more note on the crowd...for such a hoppin place, the bartenders really kept things running smoothly. We were sitting at the bar section on the upper level and had a bird's eye view of the whole room, and everyone looked like they were enjoying themselves.

I definitely want to come back on a weeknight when things are little more subdued and get some more menu tasting in.

i stopped in here on a saturday with a group of friends seeking a table, drinks and snacks. all desires were fulfilled, eventually. this place gets packed! the secret is, it empties out after 10 or so. go later and be rewarded with plenty of seating.

the beer list is gigantic, with good seasonals on tap. i had a delicious pumpkin ale that tasted like liquid autumn. be warned, though, this is not the place for cocktails. the bartender claimed not to know how to make a long island iced tea and the wait staff made it clear that they tend to only serve "old man" cocktails.

service was very good, save for one drink order. the waiter did his best with the loud noise towards the beginning of our meal.

we ordered a bunch of smaller plates and a few desserts to share, and everything was very well prepared. the mixed fall greens were a surprising favorite. the bread and cheese was a little disappointing and could have used something else. although tempted, i did not try the twice fried chicken.

the setup is slightly awkward and tends to create a backlog at the door when the bar is full and people are waiting for tables. overall, the atmosphere and decor are warm, inviting and simple. i would definitely return for a full meal!

In 1976, The Who were recorded at 126 decibels at Charlton Athletic field. This was the 1st "loudest rock Band" for the Guinness's Book of World Records.
I am guessing that Resurrection Ale house is pretty close to that level on a Friday night.
Being pretty hungry, I wondered if i chose poorly as I approached and heard the roar of the crowd. how long was the wait gonna be? Sure sounds like a lot of folks in there.
My fears were immediately vanquished, as a table for two was immediately available. our server was friendly and efficient, we waited for nothing.
The menu is very well rounded, something for everyone. All items including salads were original and well thought out. Besides our order i saw a few things I want in the future and a couple on the menu that sounded great. I enjoyed my 2x fried chicken a bunch, and was able to give it my full attention, since I knew conversation with my dining partner was out of the question. On our way home my dinning partner and I discussed the nice beer list, amazingly diverse options, and the tasty meal we had just eaten. We were both sure we would be back soon. During the week, might be a a little less deafening.

Went on a Friday about 8:45 or so.  We waited about 30 min and they accommodated us for a table of 6.  Not too shabby.  Like it's sister bar Local 44 in University City, Resurrection focuses on good craft beers and gastropub fare.  I did like the beer list and everything on draft is reasonably priced at $4-$5.  They also had a nice bottle list.  I had the beef shank sandwich with caramelized onions, Gorgonzola cheese and hot peppers.  It looked damned messy to eat with hands so I ended up doing it up with the fork and knife.  Pretty tasty.  Great fries.  Admittedly, there were some mixed reviews from others about their food.  Some people complained that they thought the menu would be more bar-ish, i.e. more finger foods if desired.  They don't seem to have wings or anything of the like if that's what you're into.  The service was good.  We had 11 by 10:30 or so and we were able to fit everyone at the table somehow!

Went here last night and was pleased with the beer selection and prices.  There are a fair number of vegetarian / vegan entrees but no wings or much other standard pub food (other than a burger).  I had a fennel salad and some lamb skewers (both small plates) that were tasty but not entirely satisfying given that I was craving wings.  The owner was incredibly gracious when stopping by and asking what we thought of the fare and such.  I can see myself returning but probably just for beer.

Good dipping sauce for the fries, not sure it's worth coming back yet...

I tried Resurrection Ale House this week for a quick bite after the Yelp party at Supper.  I believe the place is owned by the same people that brought us Memphis Taproom and Local 44.  The place has a similar feel to their sister pubs, which i'm not sure is good or bad.  It is kind of on the small side.  The place is a somewhat upscale gastropub like the others, which means you are basically  paying a premium on grub that is ok but somehow still unsatisfying in the end.  The beer list was good / average.  I had the oyster sandwich on pumpernickel w/ a side of fries and the curry aioli dipping sauce.  The fries were tasty, but the sandwich left me wishing i ordered something else.  It was difficult to eat... the bread kept falling apart and letting the fried oysters slip out onto my plate.  The horseradish sauce on the sandwich was appreciated, but didn't quite make it a killer sandwich... something just wasn't right.  I'll probably give this place another try eventually, but i'm not in a hurry.

We came here for the opening night a few weeks ago, and actually visited again this past weekend. They have great drafts on tap. It is a little off the beaten path, but not too much so that I wouldn't go there. I was slightly turned off and kind of amused the first night when I was told they don't usually do beer samples. In fact I think thats secretly why we went there this weekend. I definitely love beer and have no problems asking for a sample. I guess I can see the point that you don't get to taste other things on the menu, but it has become such a standard to me that I was definitely annoyed. The bartender was friendly, and I liked the crowd so I'll probably be back.

i'm so torn!

love the setting.  love the decor.  love the massive beer selection.  the huge window out in front is gorgeous and makes it feel like summer (but i wonder how cold and drafty those seats will be in the winter).
the bartenders know their schtuff, and are super friendly and quick.
and the food?  not your standard bar food.  i had the tasty (if a bit overly salty) hoisin pork ribs...which were quite plentiful for $13...and the roasted cauliflower with sweet and sour onions and pine nuts was perfect for the veggie side of me.

so where is the torn part?  the fact that it was so crowded and so noisy...the bareness of the place amplifies the noise factor.  plus, our estimated wait time of 30 minutes for a table for 3 turned into almost an hour and half made me a slightly less than pleased and very hungry girl.

i'll return once the hubbub dies down--but judging by how excellent this place is, it may be a while!

So I've been a couple of times and it seems to be growing on me. The layout was always a little weird when it was Yello and it's still the same..split level, cramped...doesn't take much for it to feel packed. It does feel lighter and airier though and the decor is certainly pleasant. Most definitely the beer selection is the most impressive element here and I'm sure it will guarantee returns visits. I'm still trying out the food though. Both times fell a little short but it was early days and they may well be still finding their feet. I'll keep trying to find out.

Went here for the first time today.  I am very pleased to have a new place nearby.  We went for a late lunch and were excited about the menu.  Lots of veggie options for friends.  The decor was nice and filled with light.  Service was friendly but inconsistent.  There was 1 person waiting table and 1 person behind the bar but the bar tender seemed to be the only one working at any given time.  That meant they took forever to get our check, which always irritates me intensely.
Having said that, the entrees were very good.  The twice fried chicken was incredible.  Crispy, sweet, and pretty darn near perfect.  My chorizo and manchego omelette was also very tasty and exactly what i had been craving.  The tossed greens that came with the omelette was well dressed and had a nice vinegary dressing.  We started with the beet salad which was interesting.  The beets had nori in them, which wasn't completely satisfying.
I would go back again to try more of the menu and to have a drink with friends.

Yay!  So thrilled when Resurrection opened in the 'hood.  We watched the changes after Yello'bar closed and were psyched to hear that the proprietors of Local 44 and Memphis Taproom were planning a new place in lovely G-Ho.  Turns out Leigh and Brendan used to live down here back in the day.  They are super awesome and know their restaurant stuff.  Anyway, hallelujah!  They opened after a long-seeming short few months' turnaround.

Stopped by on opening evening and it was wall to wall people.   Stopped back again a few nights later for dinner and enjoyed a seat at a booth on the upper level, the roasted cauliflower and onions, the lamb skewers, and the corn fritters.  YUM.  And then, it arrived:  the twice fried chicken.  Holy heck, that was great.  As someone else mentioned, not exactly a first-date dish.  Thankfully, it wasn't my first date.  Delicious.  Crispy.  Unfortunately it was a little too fried for my delicate digestive system.  That said, I would probably eat some again if it were in front of me.   Have also had the pan con tomate with chorizo and manchego, which was very rich and a neat twist on the old standby.   Hubs highly enjoyed the hoisin braised pork ribs.  There's plenty left on the menu that I'm looking forward to trying, so we will be back again and again and again thanks to its close range to the home base.   I may upgrade them to five stars once I sample more of the menu (including brunch!).

Disclaimer:  I'm not a beer lady (gasps!), so I can't speak to the brews, but everyone I've been there with including the hubs has been very impressed with the selection.  Sounds like they've also got some beery surprises saved for when the brunch menu officially starts in a few weeks.

Come here for the beer (if you like that sort of thing), the food (whether you like beer or not), and the cool crowd.   Yes, there's only one TV, but they're more of a restaurant with a bar than a sports bar.  The vibe is pretty sweet.

Also - someone mentioned it's far from public transport, but the 12 bus stops right outside (to center city) and across the street (from center city).  Or take a taxi - it's not that far!

Stopped in for a opening night test drive... The fact that they had Russian River (the elder) brought a Christmas morning surprise present smile to my face :) I also tried a free fried chicken wing with some honey.. It was good. It has a standard tap feel but it 's more alive.. Seems like I found a new Getaway beer spot... The only down side was the noise level and I can see this place getting very crowded. Parking was also a little rough... Go and give it a shot!We definitely need more places like this in Philly!

Way overdue review of this place, but had to add to the thread - a great hipster spot with an eclectic beer selection, and GREAT apps.  Upon arrival to the opening and sitting down at a booth with some friends, we were immediately served one plate after another including: shrimp teriyaki skewers, fried oyster sticks, sliders, pork chops, fried chicken wings, bruchetta and more!  The waitresses were very attentive and quick with drinks, the owner welcoming, the crowd lively and un-obnoxious;  a chill, comfy, kick-back that i would definitely frequent (if it were a bit closer to me or to public transport)!

Four of us had dinner and drinks on a Friday night. I immediately liked the atmosphere because it wasn't as formal as a restaurant,  yet not too much of a bar scene. They offer a great selection of beer and the food was wonderful! We shared 4 small plates and 1 larger plate. The guys loved the pork belly and the slow cooked greens, and my roommate and I found the fried chicken to be tender and juicy without being greasy. The beets were wonderful as well, although the anchovy flakes were a little too strong for me- they are more of a garnish though so I still enjoyed the dish. And the german potato salad that comes with the chicken was AMAZING. The bill was a little less than $60 (without drinks), which I think is a deal considering our group of two girls and two really hungry guys. Everyone left full!
