I miss living in Ballard because for 10 years I had the pleasure of eating at this establishment... I was treated excellent by the family that runs the place and the food was outstanding.

My favorite dish was the chicken taquitos which are a meal in themselves... just a warning!

    Miss you Michoacan!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This place is hard for me to review and the reason why is a long story that only I and many of my friends know. I read the poor reviews below and mostly I'm struck by how many people think they know "Mexican" and all the reasons they spout for being some kind of authority. Please go back to whatever your favourite whatever place was (CA, Baja, NM, TexMex.... list of aficionados is as endless as the styles of Mexican cooking is) and save your one star reviews for a true dump that deserves it... because Restaurante Michoacan is certainly not either.

I'll tell you what this place is: This is a family owned and run restaurant that makes great food and lets you feel like  you've come over for dinner. That's how they run joint and that's why I love them and they myself and many others I know... and have for many years now. I can tell you quite a few dishes on the menu that are as good as it gets for my tastebuds (and I've tasted cooked and loved fiery foods of kinds for longer than my tastebuds remember) and quite a few other reviewers have named many of them so I won't unless you ask me specifically. I've also had dishes elsewhere that certainly top the versions found here. So what? When I was in grade school my best friends mom made macaroni like I never dreamed of, but when I'd be over and they served fried chicken I would just pout inside and wish for my mom. Same same. Every complaint below is just silly for the most part. I love this place because they know what I like and make it for me - I'm a friend here and they're mine now, and it's all pretty cheap to boot. Show many another place that has that and I'll show up there as well. Everyone else can go to Carte on the Ave and get disregarded as they wait for the table to turn. Business is business and food is food... and I know what "good" is on both counts. And it's found here.

Got to get back to my borego y chiles asado.

    Salud.

Every time my partner and I drive past this place I exclaim, "OMG that place is soooooo goooood!"  Years later, we finally actually stop in . . . and I was so embarrassed that I had stuck to my guns declaring the superiority of this place for no good reason!  We both had the most blaaahhhh gringo mexican food EVER.  Did they even use salt or pepper?  Spices?   Love!?!?  I had the taco salad and my lunch buddy had the steak tacos - both were so bland and void of flavor that we were more interested in the old folks sitting in the corner booth drinking margaritas than we were in our own plates.  If they were having an off afternoon, I'll never know because I banned myself from going back.

unfortunately, i really didn't like this place. I wanted to but couldn't bring myself to do so. more accurately, i really didn't like the food.

the salsa was horrible. i know i saw chilies and onion in it but all i could taste was ketchup. and while the chips were warm, they certainly weren't made in-house.

i ordered the burrito michoacan with shredded beef. it wasn't bad but it wasn't really good either. it seemed like everything was just really really short on flavor.

good points: i sat in the bar and the whole place had a really laid-back atmosphere. also, the staff was extremely friendly and inviting without being overbearing. full selection of mexican beers

the long and short is: i just wasn't impressed - especially not for the cost.

I've been to Michoacan 3-4 times.  In the past, the food was OK.  After our last experience, we won't be back.
The chips and salsa were good, but the entres were both bad to a level that made it unfit for consumption. Neither of us are picky eaters, and we generally don't waste food, but we could not eat what we were served. In fact, I took my meat home to our always-starving cat. He wouldn't touch it.

Wow! I've read some of the negative reviews of this place; courses for horses, I guess. My take: a family has melded a couple of little shops into a restaurant, and is now running it in a friendly manner, very amenable to families. It's not upscale, and if you don't like children, it's not the place for you. As for me, it's the Mexican restaurant of choice from now on, right up there with El Puerco Lloron without the hassle of parking near the Pike Place Market. My chile verde was tasty--best I've had north of San Diego, in fact--with just enough heat.

Sure, the salsa was mild; that suited my grandaughter to a t, she loved it. I left satisfied and happy. And by the way, the sangria was excellent. (Maybe that's why I was so happy.)

They should just call this place "generic mexican restaurant #423". Moderately priced, really mediocre food served in a really poorly-lit, depressing room decorated in a "bunch of random crap" style decor.

To be fair the folks working there were really friendly, but it doesn't make up for the pile of fail that the rest of the place adds up to.

This is one of Ballard's best kept secrets. Restaurante Michoncan is by far the city's best family Mexican place period. Have never had a bad dish and I've ran through the menu. My favorite the leg of lamb oh yeah!
It's not your swanky low lite adults only type place. Your going to have some little kid run past your table with a handful of chips and cheese stuck to his face.
Making this place great for families, heck the owners have there whole family working there. It's great go and enjoy it.

I ate here last night. I read the reviews and a friend told me that it was a good place. Where to begin....

    1. Horrible sasla...really bad. We asked if they had something hotter as the one they brought to the table with the chip was flavorless. The hotter salsa was basically enchilada sauce with some heat.

    2. The chips were not good either.

    3. The food was fair. I could have got the same quality at Azteca for the same price.

I knew it was a bad sign that the only mexicans in the place were the ones working there.....that is never a good sign.

I have had good experiences here. Unfortunately, the place has gone down hill .. A LOT. I normally order chili rellenos and a tamale to tell how fresh the food is. It's NOT. Didn't finish my plate. Service was slow, and the kids down at the last booth needed more supervision than they were getting. I think it's the last time I will go.

The fajitas are sooo good!  I am veggie so I always get it with no meat (extra veggies) and it's awesome!  The "sofrito" they cook it in is authentic and gives it tons of flavor.

The chips and salsa are definitely not the best, but the plates are tasty and the portions are always huge.  They'll also bring you extra fixins if you ask.

The staff is great and attentive.  Great little spot...come hungry!

I really like this place.  It's a family-run, laid back place that is very kid and group friendly.  The place looks a little run down and the bathrooms are a bit shady but the food more than makes up for it.

I will agree with many of the comments already listed - the chips and salsa aren't great.... but I'll tell you what is

The fajitas!  They come on a sizzling platter with carmelized onions and green peppers.  I'm not sure what they use for marinade or seasoning but it's very flavorful.

The camarones a la diabla!  The sauce is seriously mind blowing - I was literally dipping my chips in it.  It has a long slow burn.  The shrimp were very nicely cooked, not overdone.

I've also enjoyed the enchiladas suiza and the margaritas.

Faux stucco walls, combinacion plates, a gumball machine?

Yep, this was going to be your typical NW Mexican food where you get a mess of rice and beans covered in cheese and you can order "American food" like hamburgers in case a burrito is just too exotic.

Or so we thought upon entering. Good thing we were wrong. They actually made the chile relleno as a whole stuffed pepper! Whaaa??? That's just crazy talk for these parts. They had green *and* red mole sauce, and the red was nice,  even if it wasn't the best mole sauce ever. For safety's sake we ordered the beef fajitas which were accompanied by both corn and flour tortillas - score! Also, the portions are RIDICULOUSLY HUGE and cannot be accurately described without turning on caps lock. RIDICULOUSLY HUGE.

Why are people giving this so many stars?

The restaurant lights were so bright I was squinting and wishing I brought sunglasses.

I've lived in 2 different areas of Mexico, and this place is gross.  Everything tasted like it came from a can.  The salsa was nasty, did they mix onions with ketchup?

I wanted this to be a yummy homey little Mexican joint in my hood.  I won't be going back.

I'll be the first to admit that I don't try a lot of the Mexican restaurants in the Seattle area, as I don't think I'll ever find any of them as good as what I could get in CA.

Also, I've grown accustom to patron and enjoy taco trucks, as they tend to be less expensive, quick, decent and edible.

That being said, I've driven by this place many of times and said that I'd need to eat there.

Service is attentive and efficient.  Everyone works together for the common goal, feed the patrons and make sure they are satisfied with their meal.

They first bring out chips and salsa.  The chips, I'm on the fence if they are store bought or if they are made on-site.  They aren't light or greasy looking, so my guess is that they outsource their chips.  Fine!  The salsa is ok, nothing special, no real hint of spiciness to it.  Chunky tomatoes are plentiful.  If you need more of either, they are more than welcome to do so.

The chicken enchiladas with mole are pretty good.  Chicken wasn't dry, which is always a positive.  The sauce was not overly strong.

The Chili relleno was recommended by the server, and I do love a chili relleno... but this one wasn't bad, it just wasn't any different than the ones I've had before.  The batter around the relleno wasn't thick, but rather thin, which I appreciate.  The cheese oozed out and mixed with the rice and light refried beans.

Overall, I like that it's a family business.  I like that the place has parking.  I like that the service is friendly.  I like that the place serves good tasting food.

Our dinner was OK. Confirming previous reports, my ex-wife's veggie burrito was enormous and swimming in delicious mole. My chile verde was not entirely flavorful where I like flavor. The pigmeat wasn't particularly tasty, either. My rocks margarita was mix-made and weak.

I love Mexican food, so I'll give it another try, and order something a little less esoteric.

FWIW, my ex-wife also took burrito leftovers home.  And ate them.  And they were good.

So my husband kept saying, "We should really go to that Mexican place up the street. It looks like it would be good." And I kept thinking, "How can a place look good, just from the outside? And this particular place, with its, um, interesting brand of mural art? So I went on yelp, read the reviews, and decided yes indeed, this was worth a shot. See, dear husband? Written, not visual proof. That's what I want.

So we tried it out last night, and I was relatively pleased. The place was completely empty (we were eating pretty early at 5:00 on a Monday night) and the waiter was very speedy in greeting us and bringing chips, really really good salsa, and water. I ordered a sangria, which was also very tasty. I was a little sad that there wasn't any fruit in it (I like my sangria to look like a tropical fruit explosion), but the flavor itself was just sweet enough and very refreshing.

For dinner I ordered the Burrito salsa verde, because I'm totally in love with green sauce and anything involving tomatillos. The plate itself was piping hot and heaped with beans and rice. No skimpy portions here, and I love a nice hot plate. The sauce was excellent. As for the burrito itself, I was a tad disappointed. It was just meat (seasoned pork) inside a flour tortilla. No veggies or cheese or anything else inside. And the meat was incredibly salty.  I'm a huge fan of salty foods, but even this was a bit much for me. I can still taste it now...wow...that was some serious salt. See me? I'm making a bleh face.

My other gripe is that it took a good 10-15 minutes for the waiter to grab our credit card after he dropped the bill off at the table. It wasn't busy at all, and while we weren't in a hurry to leave, it just seemed to take forever to get out of there!

But besides that, the service was excellent. I really dug the salsa and it's perfect amount of cilantro. The restaurant was squeaky clean, the food pretty good (although I'll steer clear of the salty pork next time), and the atmosphere comfortable. I'll give it another try again, fer sure.

This is the best ever Mexican restaurant with gumball machines by the front door. AND a sticker machine. AND the selection of Jarritos sodas (hooray for tamarindo) lined up on the wall of a booth right by the cashier.

The food reminds me of Old Skool Oakland/Alameda/San Leandro Mexican food; not fancy with, like, cardamon and authentic soil from the cook's abuela's grave, but with exotic ingredients like salt and manteca (aka lard). The chile colorado has enough jalapeo to make the top of my nose sweat. The chicken enchiladas taste like chicken. The guacamole is too heavy on the cilantro for my left-handed-cilantro-hating taste, but I can live with that.

Good rice & beans, ok chips, great people working there, something called a "parking lot" right outside. Great for people with holes in their jeans, kids, and kids with holes in their jeans.

Hard to write this review. It's a four star place, for Seattle. But I came from Texas, where it'd be two and a half at best.

The service rocks. Super friendly, attentive, and they really seem like they give a shit. Do you have enough salsa? Can I bring you anything? It works for me.

The food ain't bad at all. Nachos are good. Pork is bland, but if it's drenched in chile verde then it's mmmmm.

Lots of choices on the menu, and plenty of parking. I haven't found solid, cheap-ish mexican food in Seattle that I am in love with (yet! I'll never stop looking), but I feel good about giving Michoacan money because if nothing else, they do a good job taking care of folks who come through the door.

OH and the margs aren't too shabby. It's no Ten Dollar Margarita (*cough* Ocho *cough), but on a sunny afternoon in the middle of the week, it hits the spot.

They also have a kids menu, if you're into that.

I would never have known about this place but for Yelp. It's close to home, and I think it'll take over Rosita's as our default "combo plate" mexican. You know, rice, beans, and some other things (enchiladas suizas for me, this time) on an enormous plate that burns when you touch it after they tell you to be careful.

Sometimes you just can't do the line at La Carta, you know?

Big portions, and a distinct understanding that Mexican food is not generally defined by the heap of cheese that most Americans think means Mexican food.  Yes, lovers of the queso, there's cheese. It's just not, um, too much cheese.

Chile colorado is more about heat than taste, but still pretty good. Very very enthused with their proper mole and their pollo asado is great, too. They pass the "do you have Jarritos?" and "do you have *real* Coke?" test with flying colors.  Their staff is pretty gosh darn good.

However, this is true of many places all over the city. You can get pretty good Mexican food almost everywhere in Western Washington. That said, they're open at a decent hour on Saturdays and Sundays and they have menudo. Tasty, hearty, slightly earthy menudo. You want the real Breakfast of Champions? It's right here every weekend.

Decent.  This place hits the spot if you are super hungry and craving something loaded with cheese.  My girlfriend and I ordered the nachos with ground beef and were pleasantly greeted with a plate completely covered in the golden stuff.
Cheesy....yes, good for my stomach or any other thing...questionable.  The guacamole was super sad looking and the teeny dollop of sour cream left me wanting more.  I also decided to keep it safe and ordered the combo fajitas.  I should not have done this because they were really middle of the road.  My gf ordered the chicken burrito and that just looked gargantuan, but not particularly good.  I think the things to order here are the more authentic dishes like Chile Colorado.
I plan on giving this place another shot and actually going for it....wish me luck!!!

Esta restaurante es muy rico, y es como una familia migo!

Hannah says non fresh comida?  Oh uh uh!  I had some plato grande and the white shrooms (which are real cinchy to find canned) were fresh and good.  And I barely even like mushrooms!  Well, learning to like them, but portabellas still make my mouth feel awkward.  Tamales were bomb too, or "bomba" in spanish.

Anyway, the service is top notch, and the blended on the rocks marge was perfectomundo.  No lie.  I would have had more, but it's a school night.

So I guess what i'm trying to say here, is that while it IS an average mexican place, when you add some freshness, great service and good drinks, I think that deserves 4 stars.

Those that are saying this place is bland, haven't been brave with their orders. Why go to a Mexican place and order Taco Bell fare?

If you want good authentic Michoacan flavor then here is a good place to start. They have a LOT of authentic dishes, if you order them you won't be disappointed.

I prefer the Mole Verde it has real authentic flavor, even though Puebla is king of mole, Michoacan's flavor is unique to the region and this place does it right.

If you're a lush, don't come here, because obviously "children" having fun will disturb you. But then again, why would you go to a restaurant with "FAMILY RESTAURANT" on the sign to drink? It makes no sense to me. The reviews aren't helpful, but that's ok, come  here, be brave and DO NOT order taco bell style junk, try something better, live a little.

This place is the grub.  It's vastly superior to Azteca, but not as gourmet and snob-authentic as Oaxaca, but somewhere delightfully in the unpretentious middle.  The vegetarian burrito with creme sauce is my staple...it's way more than a meal's worth (especially after my usual 10 baskets of chips before the entree comes) and great reheated at 2am when you're craving more.

The parking lot is a bit tricky to navigate since you can only really enter from southbound 15th Street and most often taking a left out of the parking lot onto northbound 15th is a death wish.  If you have a big car (or consider it a family member), park on the street.  the lot isn't wide enough to back out like a pimp, and 16 point turns are never sexy.

Pretty much your standard American Mexican restaurant--combinaciones, enchiladas, fajitas, rice and beans on a hot plate. ("Careful, hot plate.") Our server kept calling us "amigas". BUT IT'S ACTUALLY DELICIOUS!! Not bland. Not covered in greasy cheese.

I order the green mole chicken enchiladas. (They also have red mole which I've heard is also really good.) The green mole sauce was amazing. I really wanted to order a tanker full to take home and drink. Or randomly pour over things. So good.

My friends ordered a chicken chimichanga and steak fajitas. Both were better than average. Chicken was flavorful. Fajitas came with yellow peppers which was pretty and I think tastier than green.

I got a mango margarita which tasted like it had been made with fresh mango. Or frozen. But didn't taste all fake and syrupy like they sometimes do.

My friends ordered the flan. I had been warned that it was the best flan they'd ever had. I wasn't impressed. The best I've ever had was in San Luis Obispo. Ooh, and the chips was pretty mediocre. But, seriously if they could improve the chip situation, I'd give it a 5. Really really good mexican for when you're in the mood for Azteca/Jalisco-style Mexican.

I can't wait to go back!! I want to try everything cause I'm sure it would all be great but then I'd really miss the green mole. I'ma hafta figure something out.

My girlfriend and I happened to just stumble across this restaurant and we loved it. We have both been really looking for a good Mexican restaurant (she's from Texas and I have spent time in Cali) and I think we have finally found it in Seattle. This has been the best and most authentic Mexican we have had since moving here. I got the Enchiladas Suiza with the shredded beef and pork and was blown away with the flavor. My girl friend got the carne asada and said it was delicious....

This is a great diamond in the rough. Also the service was very prompt! We will be going back many times

Run down, kind of ghetto Family Mexican Restaurant. It seemed as if this was going to be a Bad Eating Experience. I ordered the one thing that I was hoping wasn't going to leave me with a stomach ache my all time fav, The Taco Salad. Well low and behold, I was blown out of the water by the fresh, delicious taste of my salad. The chicken was soft and moist. The lettuce was fresh and crisp, the guacamole absolutely yummy! I was wrong to judge this book by it's cover. I would definately go back and it would be hard to want to try something else simply because I enjoyed the taco salad SO much. :)

I grew up in Arizona and also spent several years living in the Mission District of San Francisco. Needless to say the Mexican food in Seattle has been a real disappointment for me. Michoacan doesn't really change that. It's decent, American style Mexican food. Lots of cheese, rice and frijoles. It's not bad but it's also far from great. It's good by Seattle standards though that's not saying much.

On the upside, it's family run and the people who run it are very friendly. It's also within walking distance and so it will likely remain the fall-back, go-to place when I have to have some Mexican.

I love the family that runs the place, but besides the bar for margaritas, I will rarely stop in for dinner.  I do, however, give them a shot a couple times a year, but quality has not improved.
I think they use peanut oil in a lot of their cooking.  It is heavy and coats your mouth and, really, aren't enough people allergic to peanuts to stop this practice?
Anyway, I've tried enchiladas most of their appetizer menu.  The guacamole is nearly always great.  However, I do just have issues w/ how heavy their food tastes.

Family owned and they are extremely nice. This is one of the only places in town who's Margarita doesn't give me acid reflux. Yum.

Tons of food- and very tasty!

It's wonderful to see a family run place with a friendly staff AND good food is still around. Personally, I am addicted to Mama's Veggie Nolasco, and nothing has ever beat it, BUT this place comes in second. The portions are beyond huge (I got almost 3 meals out of my rice and beans burrito) and the prices are very reasonable. The food here is definitely authentic and the atmosphere is welcoming and warm. A gem tucked away in the Crown Hill corridor that you should at least try once, with friends and a healthy appetite.

I love Michoacan.  Great wet burritos, friendly family staff, good margaritas.  Try the Colorado.

Being from the Southwest, Mexican food definitely holds a special place in my heart. So you can imagine that I have been pretty disappointed by the Northwest's selection of Mexican restaurants. That was until I went to Michoacan. I'll admit, I was first lured here by the 2 for 1 coupon that I got in the mail, but thank goodness I am cheap because this is definitely one of the better places in town to get a good meal. Portions are huge (chicken fajitas can feed 2-3 people) and I love the staff. They are always pleasant and cheerful and do a bang up job of  replenishing my margarita supply.

I've lived in the general vicinity of this place for years, but never tried it until recently even though I'd heard it was pretty good. It was a Friday night and I wanted some Mexican food and I wanted it someplace where we could get a table before midnight. So I figured we'd hit up Michoacan, as it is just a few blocks from home, and (no offense to the restaurant, I love it) kind of a divey looking place from the outside, so I figured it couldn't be too crowded.
Inside, they were doing a lively business, but still we'd have been seated in just a few minutes even if we hadn't decided to just sit in the bar. Best decision ever, as the big, delicious and very affordable margaritas were poured only a few steps from our table, ensuring no lag time between drinks, as our waiter was very attentive as well.
So far, the food has been delicious every time, and the live music is pretty darn good.
It's our new habit to go every Friday night.
So far, even I have yet to be able to down more than two margaritas as they are pretty big, and just the right strength.
It's only Tuesday and I can't wait until Friday!

I've ignored this place for years but based on Yelp reviews we gave it a shot tonight.  Probably the best Mexican food I've had in Seattle - not that the competition's very fierce.  Picadillo enchiladas in green mole sauce, mmMMMMmmm!, and the rice was good and the beans were great.  There was a nice "I cooked this dead animal all day just for you!" depth of flavor to everything and it was just spicy enough to say hello but not butt in.  Wonderfulness.

Average/reasonable prices belie the very large portions...I took half of mine home and will enjoy it for lunch tomorrow.  I love twofers!

Good salsa, chips not great.  That doesn't bode well when you start with sub-par chips but WOW, it all got much better from there.

Kind of divey but clean, good service, pleasant staff.  I was really comfortable there.

I look forward to becoming a regular.  The elusive fifth star could be achieved if it's consistently this good and the chips miraculously get better!

My BF and I are always in the mood for good Mexican so when he mentioned restaurant mechocan we yelped it and we thought "good reviews great let's try it"!
The first thing I base my opinion on how good the food will be at a mexican restaurant is on the salsa and chips.  In my experience these 2 staples will indicate how fresh and tasteful the rest of the menu will be.   The color and consistency of the salsa was not a good sign and the taste was horrible it tastes like they had put tomato PASTE!!!, the chips tasted like they were bought from costco not crisp and fresh.  I ordred the veg chimichanga, what a surprise  it was HORRIBLE.  There was no taste, the veggies were not cooked thoroughly and the rice and beans were bland.  My BF ordered the carne asada and he also thought that the whole plate was tasteless however he did like his margarita.  Im not sure where the 5 stars are coming from because the food is not good.   The only good Mexican food that I've had so far is Puerto Vallarta in West Seattle, gorditos is good for lunch and carta de oxaca for a nicer evening.

Michoacan is my favorite Mexican restaurant.  The entire family works there, and you won't get better service than from the handsome and ever-smiling brothers.  Excellent margaritas as well, and that's hard to come by nowadays.  I've introduced several friends and family to the restaurant, and they have all come back for more.  Muy bueno.
