Neighborhood: DowntownGood! I came here on a Saturday around 6:30 and there was no wait at all. The place is tiny and we did end up semi-sharing a long table with a few others, which I didn't mind.
I had a sushi combination and my friend had their beautiful chirashi. The fish was fresh and tasty. Not mind-blowing, but very decent quality for the value at $13 per. Friendly staff, low-key atmosphere.
Park at the Japanese Village parking structure and ask the restaurant staff for validation - you get up to 2 hours. Walk around the village and grab some mochi at Mikawaya for dessert! =)

Decided to have dinner on a Sunday night in little Tokyo before the Opera. My friends and I decided to pick a random place to eat and Komasa happened to be the lucky one. The staff is very friendly and we were seated right away....this was around 6pm...but the place was filled by 6:30pm....good timing...yeah! I ordered the chirashi sushi (see the pic I posted) for $13...what a deal! Inside was 2 tuna, 1 each of salmon, albacore, whitefish, snapper, squid, clam, uni (amazed at that...score!), salmon roe, shrimp, and egg. I think the chirashi looked like a better deal than the sushi combo. The fishes were all very fresh and the slices were decent sized. What a great find in little Toyko and a great deal....I would definitely come back here again!

Pretty nice spot thought seriously pretty small so making a reservation is definitely the way to go if possible. They've got more waiters than you'd think would even fit into the little place so service is prompt and excellent. There was only one sushi chef when I was there so he kinda gets backlogged getting the sushi out.
I'd getting sushi is probably a better deal here than getting cooked dishes. The chirashi looked like it had a real good selection, better than the sushi combos.

Yeah, I'm sorry, but I just don't see what all the hype is about. Almost an hour wait for just above average sushi? I so wanted this place to be a slam dunk and both my girlfriend and I were super excited about trying this place after reading all the rave reviews, but this may be the first time Yelp has let me down. :( Not that I'm saying it isn't good, but it's just that: good, not great.
We started out with the salmon, which is both of our go-to sushi. It was a little overly chewy, to be honest. Salmon sushi is supposed to practically melt in your mouth. It was tasty and fairly fresh, yes, but still disappointing.
Some of the other stuff we had was the yellowtail, red snapper, fresh-water eel, scallop rolls, and sea urchin. The best fish was easily the yellowtail; super yummy and fell apart on my tongue. Yum! Everything else was above average, easily, with the the scallop rolls taking in a not-too distant 2nd and the scrumptious eel in a very close 3rd.
All in all I think Komasa is a pretty decent sushi joint, with fresh fish, reasonable prices, and very attentive service. However, why would I wait an hour for just good sushi when I only have to wait a few minutes for really awesome sushi a few doors down at Hama Sushi? Too bad it isn't in a different neighborhood, I'd probably eat there once in a while.
After my third visit tonight, I'm co-signing with everyone else's reviews. This place is the real deal. No gimmicks, no trendy house music, just incredibly fresh sushi & sashimi served at reasonable prices. I usually find Yellowtail and Tuna to be a bit boring, but this place has made me realize that I was just eating crappy tuna and yellowtail everywhere else. And having had some of the best sockeye salmon sashimi in the world in Vancouver, I have to say that the salmon sashimi at Komasa (although not sockeye) was equally just as good.
Just about everything that you can order here is delicious because they only use superior quality, fresh ingredients. From the crisp seaweed that they use to wrap the cut rolls right down to the green onions that they sprinkle over the toro, Komasa pays attention to every details and gets it right. If you are a sushi purist this is the place for you. Don't come here if you're looking for Hollywood ambience or cut rolls splattered with tricky dick sauces.
Komasa is a small place (explains the hour long waits, go when it opens at 5:30!) but very clean and the decor is simple, traditional Japanese. Besides the basic cuts of sushi, also try the clam miso soup and the unagi & avocado handroll.
My tip: If you like your sushi/sashimi a bit colder like I do, then sit at the sushi bar. That way you'll get your orders as soon as they are cut. If you sit at the tables you will have to wait for the chef to prepare and serve your sushi all at once in a big platter, leaving more time for some of your order to sit at room temp.
Our bill - For approx 15-20 orders of sushi (i don't remember the exact #), a full order of salmon sashimi, two miso soups, and two large sapporos, our bill for three came out to 94 bucks!!
Leaves me to wonder what the key differences are between Komasa and places like Urasawa where its $500 a head. Komasa is already excellent, How much better can a place be to justify twenty times the price? I guess I'll have to find out one day and report back.

One more solid addition to sushi in little tokyo.
The sashimi platter let me sample a bit of everything, and the tuna and salmon were excellent. I also had some ikura, which I don't think you can ruin, and, finally, the scallop sushi. Unfortunately, the scallops were smothered with mayonnaise, which made the whole thing bland and uninteresting.
3 stars instead of 4 because I just went to sushi gen a week ago and was more impressed, we were made to wait for a seat for over 30 min even though there were clearly spaces at the bar, and a series of service snafus made it hard to love the place.
But, i realize I probably had an unusual experience, and I'd be willing to try this place again to sample more of their sushi since its relatively reasonable
One of my Top Loves and it won't break the bank!
Reasons why I LOVE KOMASA:
1) Every item was FRESH & DELICIOUS
2) Extremely reasonable prices-especially for the quality
3) Excellent service + Friendly Sushi Chef
Tips: They are open at 5:30pm but try to get there by 5:20 if you want to be one of the first ones seated. They take reservations Mon.-Thurs. Komasa validates parking ticket-Park at the Japanese Village Plaza Parking (corner of Central ave. & 1st street) for 2 hours of free parking.

Love this place. Everything is pretty much covered in all the previous reviews but this place is definitely worth the wait (can be up to an hr if busy). I have been going there for over 10 years and it has always lived up to my expectation everytime. Like everyone said, the fish is fresh, extreamly reasonably priced and good service. Beside the fish, I also really like their salmon skin salad.
3.5 stars
I wanted to really like this place because of all the rave reviews on Yelp but I could only give it a celeb status of 3.5 and that means it's a B-lister...
After seeing this place a zillion times whenever I frequent Little Tokyo, I decided to try it with a friend last week for dinner. My friend got there first and she put our names down. It was a thirty minute wait on a Friday evening.
I'm going to make this short and sweet. The quality of fish was good but I wasn't blown away.
Here's what was very good:
1) Yellowtail - This was their best fish I thought.
2) Shrimp & Vegetable Tempura - I know, I know. I usually don't order tempura at sushi restaurants but when I saw someone else order it, I knew immediately it was prepared differently here. The tempura at Komasa is the only place that I've been to so far in LA that has batter that is similar to Japan. For those who have been to Japan, you will appreciate this tempura.
Pretty darn good but not enough for my stomach to get off:
1) Uni
Above average but nothing to brag to your friends or wait more than 15 minutes for:
1) Salmon - This was pretty fresh but I've had much better.
2) Albacore - Pretty good but nothing spectacular.
3) Unagi - I don't need to be a broken record in this section.
Minus points:
So, I love me some obese tuna and unfortunately this place didn't have any when I went! No medium fatty OR really fatty tuna! What? Let's open a steakhouse and not serve Filet Mignon and see how the customers respond! Minus point right there. Another weird thing I noticed is that you don't really order your fishes from the chefs directly (at least no one did when I was there) even when you're sitting at the sushi bar like my friend and I did. You have to order from the staff and they give the order to the chef. That was a little detached I thought, especially for such a small place like this restaurant.
If there is no line, you should try this place. Get the tempura and the yellowtail! But, if you have to wait more than 15 minutes, you might as well wait at Hama Sushi. (Thanks Mufasas for recommending that place. I'll review that joint shortly too).
Wait : long (how many people touched that pen?)
write your name on a list, and they'll call your cell so you can wander about. that's a plus.
Bar: small
Tables: need updating and a good scrub-down (we sat at the table)
Miso: standard
Hamachi: better than standard, soft and fatty
Tempura: not overly greasy, lots of variety in veggies.
Atmosphere: Mom- and pop style with a noisy tv, crowded and cluttered and it can get loud.
Price: VERY reasonable.
Service: Almost Excellent. Friendly, quick.
Can be better with a nice updated look, scrub down the chairs and tables. And get rid of the fishy smell.
Thank you Yelpers!
The food is so good here! Hands down, they have the best albacore sushi. The spanish mackeral sushi was pretty good, as well as their spicy tuna, but I have to admit, Noshi Sushi's spicy tuna hand roll is still better. Komasa's unagi & avocado cut roll was so amazing (they broil the unagi well done) that I had two orders. Somehow I managed to have room for their green tea mochi. I can't believe I ate so much--all for $23!
The restaurant is tiny; hence, the long wait. For those who are impatient, I overheard that they take reservations from Tuesday-Thursday...
Service is excellent and the old lady who works there is adorable.

I hate to add another positive review to this place for selfish reasons. But for shell fish reasons I will. Great service even to us white folk. I love this cozy, quick place of freshness to rival places 3x as expensive. Get free parking validation by parking at the main Japanese Village parking lot adjacent to this place.

I love love LOVE this restaurant. Have been going here for almost 10 years now, way before the line formed. Never disappoints me. They always have fresh fish and give great portions. Everything is good here, the tempura, teriyaki, albacore salad to sashimi.
The prices are reasonable too, I usually over order and stuff myself cuz the stuff is so good and the bill typically comes out to $70 for 2 people.
The downside is that there's always a wait for dinner on the weekday and weekend, usually 30min-1hr. The restaurant is pretty small. But definitely worth the wait. The wait staff and the sushi chef are super nice.

I love this joint. If you don't see me at the Shabu Shabu House you will see me at this place.
The owner is a stern guy that treats his restaurant as his kid and his customers as his guest. I was told he didn't have any kids so basically his sushi place symbolizes part of his identity.
The prices are reasonable, the cuts are generous, and the taste will pimp slap Mr. Hama Sushi in his mouth. Hama Sushi is the place next door.
Important Points:
They validate parking, open at 5:30 p.m only for dinner.
Items I recommend:
The Kani Salad aka lemon juice crab salad
Mackerel dinner if you ain't feeling sushi
Any of their rolls.
Shrimp sushi because they fry you the head and their fried shrimp head is good. I hated shrimp head until I met Komasa.
5 star for food
4 star for customer service (we had a bad waitress for the two nights that we ate there)
After reading all the wonderful reviews on this restaurant, we made it our first stop when we went to LA.
On Thursday I arrived at Little Tokyo with a book at 4:50pm and walked around mall (it took less than 10 min). I sat outside on their wonderful little bench at 5:00pm (and read my book)and by 5:05pm several more people started to show up. To everyone delight they let us in at 5:15pm. The restaurant was not that busy that night because it was only half full when we left 45 min later. The food was truly delicious!!!! The Spicy Tuna was so good!!!! I did expect wonderful customer service but I was forced to deal with a waitress who clearly not happy to be there and she showed it. That women just refused to smile even after we gave them a 20+% tip. All the waiters were great and extremely friendly.
The food was so good that we were back on Saturday (our last day in LA). We got there early again (thank god) because when they open at 5:15pm (again) they had to turn away people because they were out of room! Can you believe that?! The food was great (again) but we had to deal with another grumpy waitress. Different women but same level of grumpiness (no smiles, no hello, just what what do you want)
We ended up here because Ike had a line up to my arse!!
I liked it alot better than OOmasa, wait... in fact I love this place! the fish is really fresh and its cheap!! I think we had 2 orders of each item in the menu plus some ankimo and it only came to a $100 bucks plus 3 large beers! When we left I couldn't even breathe cuz I was soooo full!... fuggit.. It looks like they have a new regular... the only drawback was they did not have Toro last night... but other than that everything else was perfect...
5 stars for the value to quality tilt...

Very good for the price. Not quite sushi gen quality, but the price seemed much lower to me. Everything was fresh and well-prepared. The eel & avocado roll and the tuna maki stood out as being much better than average. I'm sure I'll go here many more times in the future.
this place has the best value for sushi and traditional Japanese in J-town... which is why they run a damn long wait every night of the week unless you show up when they open at like 5:15 or something. But man, when you eat there, you understand. Totally worth it if your stomach can eat its own acid for 45 minutes.
I've been wanting to try this restaurant for a while now, but every time I go, there was always a long line. Finally, I got lucky and ended up with a spot on the sushi bar. It was definitely worth the wait. The sushi was fresh and delicious. I had the yellow tail that melted in my mouth and the spicy tuna roll!
The sushi melts in your mouth...
I've been there several times and each time, I'm freshly reminded of how good the sushi is. I also like their monk fish liver...yum yum.
It seems always packed when I go there. Usually you have to wait awhile but they take your name down and give you a call on your cp. It's okay since you can walk around the little plaza while you wait for some delicious sushi!
Thank you Yelpers for directing me to this gem of a sushi place. My apologies ahead of time because as much as most of you want to keep it hidden to avoid a long wait, I'm going to frequent this place more often adding to the wait. I was here with three people last week and went back this week with 6 people. However, the wait wasn't that bad maybe because we dined late.
The sushi is great and the price to match - in other words, a great value without skimping on the sushi quality. I finally found a quality sushi place I can frequent more than once a week without breaking the bank. For a moment, I was getting desperate and frequenting Kabuki (the McDonalds of Sushi) to get my sushi fix between high quality fixes - if I sound like a sushi junkie, yes I am. Also, the restaurant doesn't appear to let their success go to its head in terms of appearance and service. I like its modesty and central location in J-Town.
If this place wasn't reviewed so many times already, I would be selfish like everyone mentions and keep it to myself. However, its out there so might as well give the place a well deserved public ass kissing.

Awesome.
That's the only word I can use to describe this place. We found this place after we waited in line at Shabu Shabu House for an hour and giving up on it.
First of all, we were politely greeted and the man at the front told us that he was sorry but we might have to wait 20 minutes to half an hour. Well that's nothing compared to Shabu Shabu House so we said no problem. Then he asked for my phone number so he could call us when it was our turn. Wow. Saintly compared to the Shabu guy who crosses your name off randomly if you leave for 5 minutes.
Then we had the actual meal. Every piece of fish was perfect. I couldn't find any faults with it. Every slice was cut nicely and generously. There's the perfect amount of wasabi lying in the rice under the fish. The Mackerel is amazing. I even enjoyed Tuna, which is usually my least favorite sushi. Every piece of fish just hit the right taste bud like a note in a harmonious symphony of tasty aquatic delights.
Whenever I come here now I get excited and never let down at the end of the meal. This place really reminds me of why I loved sushi in the first place.
Service and food both deserve the rating it currently holds on yelp.
Oh man!! y' yelpers finally discovered my secret sushi place! hehe.. I knew it would happen some day. hehe... But hey, this place is a sushi heaven!! Everything is melt in your mouth. ( I strongly recommended the sushi selection only) The only down side about this little gem is.. it is pretty small, so it can be awhile 'til you get seated. Haha...I always go and get a pinkberry and cruise down to the little yummy bakery while we wait for our table. (My gosh, I am a piggy!) Anyways, Komasa is da bomb!

This place is the best bang for your buck sushi joint I've ever been to. The quality of the sushi is good, you get a pretty big cut of fish with each order and most importantly this place is hella freaking cheap for what you're getting. I could eat here 4 to 5 times for the same amount of money as 1 visit to R23. My only negative points would be that you usually have to wait a while before being seated since it's a pretty small place and they don't have the greatest sake selection, even though the unfiltered sake will do just fine most of the time. Otherwise, if you want really good sushi and you still want some cash to go out drinking and cougar hunting later, this is the place for you.
Great service and huge, fresh slices of sushi!
We tried to come once with a big group and that did not work in this small place which usually has a line out the door. H. and I came by early on a Sunday while we were in the neighborhood and we were seated at the sushi bar right away.
The sushi is really fresh and there is just one guy who makes it all for the whole restaurant. We also tried the deep friend oysters, which were soo yummy. Its a good casual sushi spot that is really fulfilling.
Be sure to stop by a get mochi or some Ca'Fiore after you're done!

THE BEST SUSHI RESTAURANT EVER.
I have been constantly searching for good sushi/sashimi for the past 7 months since I arrived in LA. All I can say is, Komasa never disappoints. Hamachi, Sake, Ika, Uni, Ikura, Ankimo, Clam miso and Chawanmushi is a MUST everytime I go there. I love Komasa so much that I have to go there at least once a week. Most of the time, twice a week. Waitstaff are awesome, Sushi Chef is polite (once they closed and couldn't seat us, the chef personally apologized cos he was sick!) Definitely worth the wait, super busy on weeknights, worth every single penny!
Quality of fish is excellent. Portions are generous, super fresh.
I LOVE Komasa! Yes, the restaurant is small and you usually have to wait.. even on weekdays... but the wait is worth it! The sushi is fresh and delicious! The staff is extremely friendly.
I suggest the ikura with the quail egg on top... oh my gosh is it yummy!! I also love their unagi and halibut... everything is just so fresh!

I took my hubby here for his birthday last weekend because of the the rave reviews I've read from yelp. The Super Bowl was on and we figured it wouldn't be that crowded at 6pm. We only waited for about 5-7 mins which wasn't bad. They didn't have any tables left so we sat the sushi bar.
My hubby got the Sushi Dinner Combo #C and I got the Komasa Dinner Special. We also ordered some a la carte sushi. Everything was great and so we ended up ordering some more sushi. The 2nd order of our salmon was awesome. It was so buttery that it feels like it melts in your mouth, it couldn't even compare to the 1st order we had. Our fresh water eel was great also.
The service there was great. My hot green tea was always filled and hot!
The only downside was that there wasn't any dessert menu. We were craving something sweet and plus it was my hubby's bday (I didn't feel like baking, LOL). We ended up walking over to Pinkberry's for some froyo =/
For sure we'll be coming back to try out the rest of the menu.
Very traditional sushi place. Everyone knows the wait is long. The trick is to arrive as early as you can, drop off your name and cell number, then stroll around J-town and buy little cutesy trinkets and red-bean snacks. I swear, it's an awesome business plan for the entire community.

Although the wait is typically 45 minutes, its not like you have to stand out front and wait in the cold. When you arrive stick your head in the door and get on the waiting list. They will take your name and number and will give you a call if your not out front when its your turn. J-town is small but its pretty easy to kill 45 minutes browsing some local shops. If you do choose to sit out front, they'll keep you warm with some green tea and let you make your order so the food is ready by the time you take off your jacket.
As far as the sushi....Spicy tuna roll....enough said!

Restaurant Komasa has served me the best raw fish I have ever eaten! I ordered the Sushi Combo A, which gives you 6 pieces of raw fish sushi (whatever that's called) and a tuna roll, which they let me switch into a spicy tuna roll. It is also served with miso soup. It was only $11, and it left me very full!
I also commend the service at the restaurant. All of the staff is very polite. When we needed to wait for a table, we put down our phone number so they could call us when we would be seated. Also, after we ordered our dinner, my sushi took a little longer to prepare because the sushi chefs had received an enormous order before mine. They gave me some edamane beans on the house to apologize for my wait. It was a very nice gesture. When the chef finished making my sushi, he handed it to me and sneaked a smile outside of his previous serious expression which made me smile and be excited for my food.
I'm not a sushi expert, but I know the fish was very fresh and yummy! I recommend eating the sushi without any soy sauce or extra wasabi. I will definitely make the 1.5 hour bus ride back here again!
And yes, get here a good 30 minutes-1 hour before you actually want to eat, because we got here at 5:27, and they were already full and had 7 people to seat before us. We walked around Little Tokyo for about 40 minutes before we sat down to eat.
4.5 stars, only because the wait is usually 30 - 45 minutes.
The first time I tried Komasa was around Christmas. I met a twenty-something guy out front who told me he had been to Komasa at least once a week since he was a kid. He had brought a Christmas present for the owner / chef, and had received one from him as well. I knew right away Komasa is something special!
The sushi is delicious - very fresh, melts in your mouth, and very reasonably priced. I came on a rainy weekday night so the wait for a table wasn't bad, but there was only 1 chef so the service was a bit slow. However it was well worth it!
One of my favorite sushi places in LA hands down. I will agree with most people that their spicy tuna roll here is amazing and should be ordered. Their fish is always fresh and the service is excellent. You might have to wait a bit, but that happens with any good spot.

with so many good sushi places around j-town, sushi-gen down the street, you may wonder why should i come here?
less wait, better price, almost near quality.
price, quality and good old fashioned sushi. nothing special, nothing fancy. wanna eat? get down here and just enjoy the sushi and the no frills atmosphere of the sushi chef, servers, and place.
close your eyes. you might be in japan.
this place is tiny. sushi is good. price is very reasonable. you just have wait if you go there after 5:30pm or 6pm (it pretty much means you have to wait), that is because everybody knows how good this place is. i am too lazy to write, just try this place out.
I am not what you'd traditionally call a "fish person." And when I say I'm not a fish person, I mean like... after forcing down the 3rd piece of sushi, I normally want to hurl all over myself. I am not a fish person.
... And then I found Komasa. I find it hard to imagine myself walking past Komasa for the last 3 years, never giving it a second thought; I had no idea what was lurking right under my nose, waiting for me to discover it... I had no idea what a life-changing moment it would be when I finally -- on a complete whim -- walked through the doors of this unassuming little family-run establishment.
I must have been out of my gourd because on this particular night, for no particular reason, I said "fuck it, sushi all the way!" Now: what, I ask you, in my life's history, could have POSSIBLY suggested that the repercussions of this decision did NOT involve me projectile vomiting all over the sidewalk in my very immediate future? I have no answer; none of it made sense. It was a moment a madness. It felt right.
The sushi: Halibut, Mackerel, Yellowtail, Albacore
The rolls: California, Shrimp Tempura, Spicy Tuna
... One piece. Two pieces. THREE pieces. No gag. Something is fishy, here... but wait. That's just it: NOTHING is fishy, here. And that, ladies and gents, is the secret: Fresh Fish. This fish had no "fishy" taste or odor to speak of; it was tender, and subtle on the palette. And instead of blowing chunks on my date, here I was actually ENJOYING sushi!
Perhaps it's all thanks to the chef. Watching the chef is a real pleasure: he's a one-man operation, hammering out sushi to taste-perfection without rest. He puts just the right amount of wasabi in the sushi to complement the fish without overwhelming it, which was another big surprise for me, as I neither enjoy nor tolerate spice particularly well. I must say that his rolls looked extremely hand-made [read: not a lot of attention paid to aesthetics], but I have NEVER tasted better rolls anywhere -- with an especially special shout out to the Spicy Tuna roll, my new personal favorite: "it's better than sex with multiple partners, and you can take that to the bank!" - Katie [though she'll never admit it]
If none of that was enough to convert you, keep listening -- let's face it, we've all spent way too much money on 'trendy' sushi that looks great and tastes... 'not so great.' Well, this entire meal (including our drinks and soup) rounded out at a solid $31 for two people. I mean... you've got to be kidding me, right? I've paid over TWICE that amount for sushi that my body simply refused to tolerate -- how can they be low-balling the public at a record $3.50 an order for this level of quality? It's really, and I do mean REALLY no surprise that Komasa has people lining up outside the doors for waits of, on average, 45 minutes or more: It's worth the wait.
This is, hands down, the best sushi in LA for the price.
And it changes lives. The end.

oh man..... I'm craving for the unagi sushi(eel sushi) when I think about Komasa~~~~~~
you won't just have a cold eel on the sushi rice at Komasa, in here they grill the eel right before to put on the rice, and when the fat from eel itself has been grilled, the surface become crispy and you won't feel that oily too.
other then that, needless to mention a good sushi restaurant must have fresh ingredient, so they do and you can see from the waiting crowd, for sure they won't have too much left over fish.
(read my review to the tune of sir-mix-a-lot's "baby got back")
oh, my, god. becky, look at komasa.
it is so small. *scoff* it looks like,
one of those whole in the walls....
i love komasa and i cannot lie
you other sushi eaters can't deny
that when you walk into this itty bitty place
and you get tuna in your face
you get sprung, wanna pull out your gut
'cause you notice that sushi roll was stuffed
sitting at the sushi bar i'm staring
i'm hooked and i can't stop swearing
that "oh baby, your food's the best"
let me take some foodie pictures
my homegirls tried to warn me
but that spicy tuna roll you got makes me so hungry
ooh, rump-o'-salmon-skin
you say you wanna feed my friends?
well, feed me, feed me
'cause we ain't your average sushi groupies
i've seen them rollin'
and here i sit just droolin'
komasa's da shit, da best,

i'm tired of trying other things
and hearing people sayin' other sushi places have the best thing

do you like to eat some sushi stuff? (hell yeah!)
then go shake it! (shake it!) shake it! (shake it!)
shake your healthy gut to komasa!
komasa's NOT whack!
