2 reviews for Restaurant des Familles
My good friend lives out in Crown Point, LA so I recently ate at Restaurant des Familles for the second time. It is lovely, far from the hustle and
bustle of New Orleans, with an extensive menu of local specialties. I think their oyster-artichoke soup is alone worth the drive. Try to get a table overlooking the bayou for a view of an occasional alligator and turtles and birds.
I was very pleased that they were able to grill the seafood platter for me
rather than do it fried...I always prefer mine that way and the bread pudding was an excellent ending to a fine meal.
Overlooking the bayou, swamp water at the window, maybe an ibis or gator popping into view. And you are not at the zoo. This restaurant at the edge of the Barataria Preserve, in the town of Lafitte, not far south of New Orleans, is ideally located to begin to give one the sense of the real bayou.
But this is no swamp shack. Rather, it's a full service, near-fine restaurant with separate bar and well-lit dining room with 40 or more tables, wrapped on three sides with a picture window featuring the main attraction: the bayou.
The menu includes jambalaya, crawfish etouffee, and other typical Cajun fare, genuine and plenty of it. Sadly, no gator on our menu tonight, but then we weren't on theirs. So we had that going for us. Which was nice.
Well-worth the 45 minute ride from downtown NO, and a good start to exploring the bayou, one of the real treasures of Louisiana.
