Although Clementine is technically closed, the restaurant is actually still there. The owners were running both Chapeau (15th and Clement) and Clementine (3rd and Clement) and the restaurant at 15th and Clement is the one that is closed. But the location at 3rd and Clement is still open and seems to be answering to both names. Just wouldn't want anyone to miss this gem of a place due to that confusion. The food is WONDERFUL and the staff is excellent. The only bad news is they are getting so busy on weekends, walk-ins are hard, so plan ahead!

Review from Wei H.
San Mateo, CA
My parents recently paid me a super last minute surprise visit from Taiwan, and by that I mean it like I got a message in the early morning informing me to pick them up at the airport 10 hours later. So as excited as I was to their arrival, I needed to get my butt up early to start organize a quick plan for their stay, and this was how Clementine came in. I figured with Father's day around the corner, I could celebrate a sweet late Mother's day together at same time with my parents, One stone two Birds!!! What a brilliant plan!
I made the reservation at 8pm via http://Opentable.com, and we arrived promptly. To our astonishment, the chef Phillipe was waiting outside to greet us upon our arrival. That was a sure crowd pleaser to start our near 3 hours endeavor here at Clementine. The decor is classy and cozy, not as serious and palatial like Aqua and Michael Mina. The atmosphere here is VERY boisterous, some people might not be used to it as people's conversation completely dominates the music with ease. I found it just loud enough to sooth some tension for us because last night was the first time my parents got to see my girl. =)
I decided to get the 3 courses tasting menu for everyone, and we pretty much ordered most varieties on the menu. I am listing the few that really caught my eyes, and tongue. :P
Appetizers-
Foie Gras- This is prepared into perfection, the Foie Gras is so soft it melts right on the tongue. With a soft bread and honey glaze on the plate you can't go wrong this one. Keep in mind that they charge $4 extra for this appetizer.
Sweetbreads- As good as the sweetbreads in Harris' and Spruce's, the meat was tender and succulent, my dad's favorite of the night.
Snail- This appetizer was meticulously done in every aspect. There was a very small portion of pesto pasta in the middle of the plate that tasted divine with the perfect harmony between pesto, pepper, and salt. The snails were marinated, taken out of the shell for us, and were placed on each corner of the plate. Just like the pasta, they were wonderful.
Entrees-
Guinea Fowl- The waiter described us the meat of Guinea Fowl is in the middle between Chicken and Duck. The dish stayed true to the recommendation as the meats were firm on the surface, yet tender in the middle, with the skin being delectable and a lot less greasy than the duck skin. Overall this dish was truly delightful and delivered on the portion.
Halibut- In my opinion, the best entree dish of the night. The fish was fresh and light on the taste while the broth retained a flawlessly creamy taste. The thinly sliced potatoes was scrumptious to compliment the overall experience. Definitely the highlight of the night, my mom made an impeccable choice, and I am so proud of her!
Desserts-
Cream Brulee- What can I say, creamy, fluffy, and not overly sweet even with the hard caramel on top. The portion was big enough to be shared by two! Love it
Trio of Sorbet- Just like any sorbet, nothing particularly special, but a great addiction to have to snap back from food coma from the ice cold sorbet!
Special Strawberry Custard- Fairly entertaining, and beautifully presented. I love the strawberry custard but I still prefer to have the hard caramel to go with it though!
I really wanted to try their Floating Island Vanilla Dessert special, unfortunately they were out by 10 pm. booohooo~
The service at Clementine was quick and attentive, our waiter felt really like a French food savvy, as his recommendation were all spot on. There were two waiters to take away the plates every time with lightning speed, and that was a huge plus for me because I get annoyed easily by a bunch of left over food.
Thanks to Clementine, my girl was able to melt away my parents defensive mechanism and made an intimate impression just as Clementine has melted away our hearts with its heavenly service and food. I couldn't have asked for more. :)
Minus 1 star because of the disappointing Short Ribs, stick with the seafood or the more exotic poultries instead. -

I have passed by this quaint little restaurant so many times. Each time I think to myself "I've got to eat here one night" as I go over their menu.
My thought finally became a reality when a friend decided to take me out for a belated birthday dinner.
He said..."so there's this French place I've been wanting to go to on Clement, want to eat there?"
Of course Clementine came to mind, of course. ;]
We arrived close to 7pm, but I got shafted with parking a few times. Even though some biatch stole my spot, the parking gods were in my favor as I easily could have stole another guy's spot, but I let it pass and allowed karma to run its course.
Next thing you know, I had a spot right in front of the restaurant! VIP yo!
My friend stopped to read the Zagat rating and for some reason, I stopped to go over the menu in the window even though I was about to walk in and dine there. An very nice and friendly older gentleman asked me "have you ever eaten here?" I smiled and apologetically said "no, but I've been wanting to try it" to which he said "you'll LOVE this place then. They have a wonderful 3 course meal..." what a coinky dink, I was JUST looking at their pri fixe menu!
My friend said it ended at 7, and it was a little past 7pm =(
The really nice gentleman opened the door for us and insisted he'd ask the host if they could still do the prifixe menu for us.
The host smiled and said of course.
Then gentleman winked and told us to enjoy our dinner.
WHAT AN AWESOME MAN!!
We thought he was a manager or something, but he was a fellow customer.
I had the butternut squash soup for appetizer, the trout for main course and creme brulee for dessert. My friend had the marinated salmon, pork tenderloins and lemon sorbet with vodka.
My squash soup was so delicate and light, perfect!! And no dallop of creme fraiche in there either, I don't like it in my soups. My trout was cooked perfectly as well. The meat just flaked and was so tender and juicy! The skin came right off. And...I love creme brulee.
EXCELLENT creme brulee!
I didn't try any of my friend's food, but he said everything was great.
The service was on hit. The servers were friendly and accomodating, yet not pushy. They also kept my water glass full at all times and were never intrusive of our conversation. Oh, and the entire waitstaff was French!
My favorite thing about this restaurant..ok I'm going to sound like such a kid.. But they have their salt and pepper in small pots at the edge of the table like Oola. HOWEVER the salt has its own tiny little metal scoop! HOW ADORABLE!! I was loving it.
Oola's does not have the little scoop, nor am I certain of how often they change out the salt. Grubby dirty hands could've been reaching into your little pot of salt all night yanno?
Anyway.
I heart this restaurant and I am definitely coming back.
The $25 pre fixe menu is a steal, pls give Clementine a try. -

UPDATED REVIEW 5/31/08:
For whatever reason, I cannot get another ROTD out of this review, although everyone, their mother, brother and out-of-town relatives refer to it daily. Whassup? :o)
Anyway, went again with fond memories, and Clementine is even better! Gone is the French' Tude hostess, and what remains is sheer blissful cooking. Unfortunately, they've removed the ala carte menu, so you are forced to other either a 3 Course Meal ($45 per person) or 4 Course Meal ($50+). This DOES NOT include coffee, extras, wine, etc. Two people, 3 course meals, coffee and bottle of wine $275 before tip and tax. Think about it! and wait for a special occasion.
THE FOOD IS EXTREMELY GOOD, NAY EXCELLENT, I WILL BE BACK! Excellent service, fabu wine list and lots of ambiance.

ORIGINAL REVIEW:
After a plaintive call for Yelp, it was suggested by fellow Yelpers that I try Clementine for a very special night out with family in tow. They were wonderful about taking the reservation, confirming same, but a little bit needy about me calling back and recalling once again. I would have thought it a first date who had a crush, but whatever.
I had specified that I needed to be seated at 8:00p because I had a large party, the weather was awful and my father is in constant back pain and cannot stand long periods of time. When we got there, I was angered there was no valet, but instead cones marking off the valet spot so I couldn't even stop to let my Dad out. Also, there were at least 50 people crammed in and around the bar, and 20 tables unset, no one setting them and no one bustling around to take care of it. This went on for about 15 minutes until I prompted the hostess again. One in my party was frantically trying to find parking for about 20 minutes. I realize it was a primetime Friday at 8:00p, but again, parking was sort of implied when I asked.
Then again, I got the French 'tude which I totally expected, so I went a little French Ghetto back. I told them we have a problem if no one seats us in the next 5 minutes. She replied there was no problem. I went outside to find the remaining Parker of the party, started calling my backup restaurants and lo and behold, "Your table is ready madame!" Damn Skippy it's ready!
We get seated in a flurry of cotton tops who won't leave their 6:00p early bird specials, blocking the aisles, talking & finally get some drinks about 20 minutes later. The dinner really picked up from there. I was concerned about being a good hostess for a large party who had come from all over California to be part of a special event. Instead, an hour after arriving, we were just ordering dinner.
Our waitress was unbelievable! She took the orders quickly and brought everything immediately. When I told her of my bad hostess experience, she quickly apologized, spoke to the manager AND brought me a free bottle of wine. The food was superb. Absolutely everyone LOVED their dinner: Blue Seabass, Filet Mignon, Escargot, Sweetbreads, Salade Francaise and Mahi Mahi. Everything was perfection and I'd go back again, as long as I don't have to get my blood pressure up and ghetto-ized.
Our Clementine waitress showed class up the ass! Take a lesson restauranteurs -- this is the way to make your diners happy! -
Review from Justin C.
It's about quarter to five and I'm a well into my regular Saturday afternoon run from Financial to Ocean Beach. Just as I'm about to catch my breath, I realize I'm in Laurel Heights.
Yikes.
So I carefully jog around the sparsely crowded sidewalks and descend onto Arguello and quickly approach the intersection where Clement street opens west towards the Pacific.
As I head down Clement, I slow down a few blocks after starting west and I look across the street and notice a guy inside a restaurant prepping tables for dinner but suddenly trying to get my attention through the window.
As I walk across the street, I see that I'm approaching Clementine, and I forget if it was a thumbs-up or a fist in the air, but I sense that I'm we're on the same page.
Then it dawns on me that I'm wearing my official Adidas blue home jersey for the French National Team that my heros Zinedine Zidane and Thierry Henry wore for Coupe du Monde 2006.
I point to the gold star and the F.F.F. on my jersey and the guy nods in approval. Tres bien. He's a fellow fan of "Les Bleus", and quite possibly French.
I take a look at the menu, and it's clear that Chef Didier Labbe has the gastronome's interests in mind. Yes, I'm a born-again Parisian, but that doesn't mean that I can't enjoy a nice meal across the pond, and Clementine satisfies in every way.
When I ask for entrecote or faux-filet at the butcher shops in France, they give me exactly what I want. Same deal at Clementine. You ask for an Entrecote steak, pomme frites, or Moules marinieres and you get an authentic flavor that would normally cost you a plane ticket from SFO to CDG.
The service at Clementine is absolutely perfect. You get attention when you need it, and enough privacy when you just want to enjoy your dinner companions. A+ staff, from the kitchen to the wait staff and manangement.
Clementine is the perfect place to dress up nice, enjoy a nice meal, and soak up real French ambiance in the Richmond.
Bon weekend, et bon appetit! :)Listed in: Top Restaurants

Chef Phillipe is an artist and with a really nice personality. on my day off one night I went there to eat. Ordered the complete 3 course menu but of course Phillipe gave us more dishes to taste like the amazing mussel soup and the seared Foie Gras on warm apples. The wait staff is very friendly and gave us a great service, they brought us bread 5 times during the night, yes I love bread and this one was good there.
Great experience will go back there soon!! -

I was so bummed that Chapeau was closed on Dec. 26, well closed to those of us without reservations. Who knew that the restaurant would be "that" busy the day after Christmas? Lesson learned. Since Chapeau was closed, we opted to go to Clementine. Even though my friend had already dined there, I hadn't, so even though it was supposed to be for her, we came here for me. I know, bad friend.
Anyway, onto the Clementine review. Immediately after we walked in, the maitre'd asked us if we had reservations. Having already struck out twice in one night (we also tried Burma Star, but they were closed for the holidays and clearly remodeling inside), we both smiled as my friend kindly responded, "No." He paused for a moment, looked at the seating chart and proceeded to lead us to our table. Whew!
The restaurant was still relatively quiet inside. Only a few other tables were occupied at that time (5:30ish). We both ordered the raspberry spinach salad (light and refreshing) from the pre-fixed menu.
I chose the rib eye steak as an entree. The medium rare steak was cooked to perfection. It was accompanied by the best tasting carrots and some other steamed veggies that didn't particularly "wow" me. My friend ordered the salmon. I didn't try it, but I know she liked it. And she ordered the fruit sorbet for dessert, while I chose the most amazing french toast on the face of this planet. It was buttery, sweet and mouth watering with the ice cream on top. Heavenly.
I believe the pre-fixed menu was $24/person. It was definitely worth it to spend a quiet night with one of my dearest friends. Enjoying good food with good company is always worth it. I will definitely be back to try the other French dishes. -

My experience at Clementine was one of the best eating experiences I've ever had. My boyfriend has been a chef for over 10 years, and as a result can be very picky about food and restaurants. We also dine out a lot and love to try new chefs. At Clementine, everything was perfect-- the decor is cozy and elegant. The menu is varied, with simple items as well as more involved dishes. The bar is beautiful, and the hostess was friendly. The bathrooms were clean, the dining room was spotless. (I think this is a very important detail-- dirty surroundings tell you something!)
The service was fabulous-- our water glasses not only were never empty-- the were never less than half full. The wait staff was attentive, and all of the servers seemed to be present throughout the whole dining room, helping eachother and working as a cohesive team to keep things tip top. Not only our table, but all of the tables in our vicinity were able to relax and enjoy their meals without having to worry about looking for someone to fill their glass. These are some of the small details that make it possible for you to focus on the experience of fine dining.
Finally, the food: my salad was dressed to perfection, and G's sweetbreads were tender and perfect. My fish was cooked perfectly-- I've never had better salmon in a restaurant. We shared a dessert and it, too, was phenomenal. I would highly recommend Clementine-- as someone who dines out frequently in all manner of places, I would say that they've got every aspect of fine dining down to an art. -
Review from Don H.
One of the first things you'll notice about Clementine is that nearly everyone working here seems to be French. It's a great excuse to practice yours, if you speak any. I don't, but luckily this didn't matter.
The food is exquisite. Very French; very rich; very well made. I offer for your consideration:
Black tiger prawns in shredded phyllo, deep fried, with tomato & onion marmalade, small beans, and herb aioli. The light sweetness of the phyllo complemented the sweetness of the prawns perfectly, and the crispiness was a great contrast. The marmalade was tangy and a completely different flavor, and the aioli was like liquid basil.
Pan seared foie gras on toasted brioche with apple gastrique and micro greens. Brings new definition to the word "rich." Nearly liquid inside, the foie gras was fantastic, and plated beautifully with a sliced, splayed apple standing up in the center of the plate. The slightly bitter greens we a great balancing palate cleanser.
Baked brie on toast, with salad and spiced apples - rich in an entirely different way from the foie gras.
Rabbit leg stuffed with baby spinach and mushrooms, on barley & wheat timbale with baby carrots and mustard sauce. Brilliant. Flawless. Tender. Incredibly rich. Beautiful presentation. And a remarkably large amount of rabbit meat, too!
Pan roasted rack of lamb, with beans cooked in duck fat. I think there was more to this, but that's all I can remember. Dear God. Yeah, it's as good as it sounds.
Warm Valrhona chocolate cake with banana flambee rum raisin ice cream and caramel sauce. Wow. I love molten chocolate cake. I also love bananas flambee. This was one of the most perfect desserts ever.
French toast with soft caramel hazelnut ice cream. As good as everyone else says it is (and uniquely interesting as well). I must admit, I liked the chocolate cake better though.
OK, so the food is amazing. The wine list is 20 pages, mostly French, and remarkably reasonably priced. Most bottles are in the $50 or less range. They even have a page specifically for good value wines around $30. We had an '07 Cahors which was dense, rich, and worked very well with our main courses, as well as a half-glass of dessert wine with both the foie gras and dessert courses. If you're feeling overwhelmed, the staff is knowledgeable and happy to help suggest things.
Finally, I've noticed that some people have complained about the service, but ours was fantastic. Friendly, welcoming, helpful, and very knowledgeable about the menu. I've long been a firm believer that if you're nice to your servers, they'll be nice to you, and this was most definitely the case last night. The chef is also very friendly, and came though enthusiastically greeting everyone in the restaurant during the evening.
Final notes - reservations are recommended, as it is a popular restaurant. They have a full bar, if you arrive early or wish to stay late, and the atmosphere is, while not incredibly romantic, perfectly appropriate for a fancy date. And with food like that, there's no way you could lose. Most highly recommended. -

My sweet fiance surprised me with a romantic dinner at Clementine. We were the first ones in at 5:30pm but this small restaurant filled up fast.
We both ordered from the prix fixe menu ($25) which included soup, entree, and dessert. Wanting to try more from the menu we also ordered the roasted duck breast with foie gras salad with raspberry dressing.
The soup of the day was lobster brisque. You can definitely taste the lobster but it was not too over powering nor heavy. The salad with duck and foie gras looked small in size but was quite a lot since the foie gras was very rich with a pate consistency. It went well with the complimentary bread...so well that we finished the whole basket of bread!
We were quite full already when the entree came. (Note to self: no need to order additional item to go with the prix fixe menu). I had the trout with lemon lime sauce and him the lamb shank. Both were delicious. Fiance only wished there was a bit more sauce with his lamb though. Good portions. I finished half of my trout since I knew dessert was coming and I really wanted to fit it in!
I had a hard time deciding on dessert since there were too many choices. I ended up with the raspberry mousse shortcake and him the apple tart with caramel ice cream. A great way to end the dinner!!
I love the ambiance of Clementine! Soft lighting. Candles. Mini vases of irises at the tables. Service was wonderful. I can't wait to go back again! And maybe even try out my French! -

We had an anniversary dinner here recently. The place is nice and people are pretty nice. We got there, sat down and were served promptly. The food was good and the wine was great. Everything here was just fine, but I wasn't blown away. I had higher expectations and maybe I jinxed myself as a result.
I would go back and try again, this time with slightly lowered expectations. -

I really liked Clementine up until I arrived there with my date. I called to make reservations and they were very polite and were willing to work with me to get a good seat and time on a Friday night.
When we arrived, we were ignored for a good ten minutes. It was busy, so we didn't think much of it. We were finally seated fifteen minutes after our reservation was scheduled for (and we arrived early, too).
The food was quite good. Their presentations were immaculate and impressive. They knew the right amount of height to give their dishes, as well as proper portions. I was ecstatic when I received *two* quails and not just one.
Maybe it was because they were busy, but all throughout the night we were ignored again. They never asked if we wanted more wine, they never asked how the food was, and they never even asked if we wanted dessert.
I didn't mind the large bill as the food was very good. I left a 25% cash tip out of sheer appreciation for the chef.
The next day, my credit card was charged about 20% higher than what was on my receipt. I figured maybe they assumed they could add gratuity without asking and I called to get some clarification. Whoever answered the phone tried to tell me there was nothing he could do because of the way their computer system works. He told me if I wanted to pursue the issue, I should come in and take it up with the chef.
I decided it wasn't worth the effort and I will never, under any circumstances, return to Clementine.
Two stars for great food. -

San Francisco, CA
A very warm and cozy French neighborhood bistro quietly hidden along Clement Street. The exterior already gives one a facade reminiscent of the countryside or a small town European village. As you enter the place, the homey feeling of the old country welcomes you. The tables are arranged functionally, while the entire restaurant decorated with simple traditional French country finishings. I appreciated the tea flower arrangement in each table with multi-colored roses.
The crowd was mixed: older couples, young couples, families, groups, romantic second dates, and our table of five: a family celebrating our patriarch's 70something Birthday.
We were comfortably seated along a table by the wall. Our young French waiter behaved perfectly, attentive but not obtrusive, knowledgeable with the menu and wine offerings, yet not pushing any client towards ordering the more expensive items in the selection, not that it mattered to us, my parents were paying for the tab!
We enjoyed a wonderful three-course meal. I indulged in the very fresh mussel appetizer (Mussels Marinieres with white vermouth and tarragon) which was served with abundance and seasoned perfectly. My son ordered the escargot (from Burgundy in a garlic parsley butter) for his appetizer, I could not resist taking a piece of the escargot and did not regret the many seconds of pleasure experienced.
For our entree we ordered: the salmon dish (Sauteed Loch Duart salmon), honey roasted quail over porcini mushrooms ravioli on truffle oil, sauteed scallops over lobster risotto gently sprinkled with lightly fried strips of potatos on lobster sauce, and a couple of rib-eye steak in green peppercorn sauce with fries. We were very satisfied! My scallops melted in my mouth while the risotto with lobster flavor was cooked in al dente fashion. I sampled the quail which was tender and juicy, while the rib-eye steak prepared per each guest's specification. The fries, perfetto!
For dessert, four of us shared the caramelized french toast with hazelnut ice cream and dark chocolate profiterole, both of which provided the ultimate climax in culinary pleasure. The caramelized toast caresses one's tongue as each bite immediately melts in surrender.
Our birthday celebrant enjoyed three joyful scoops of plain vanilla ice cream with a lit single candle. He quickly blows the candle out as he gives me a wrinkled look, nonverbally scolding me for "making a scene". Our dad is such a bashful pet, if he was one, he'd be a quiet hamster, who prefers to sit in the background, with a book at hand or his old Latin dictionary.
My meal was enhanced with a couple of wonderful glasses of Cabernet that was definitely of good quality, while I further enjoyed a strong after dinner drink that paired perfectly with the sinful sweet delights.
The tab? only $230+ for all five of us. For the quality of this quaint bistro, I believe this place is quite cheap! I even told my son, he should consider this place as a nice date-dinner-place, should he meet that special one! It is so affordable, and besides, I want to ensure that the boys in my family are trained to be chivalrous and proper gentlemen, as opposed to the mainstream of the male species who have problems footing the bill or initiating a wonderful romantic dinner for a special girl (and paying for its entirety!).
This is an affordable and perfectly romantic dinner date place! -

Clementine comes down to one word: stuffy.
A stuffy French restaurant, with stuffy, delicious French food, with stuffy French servers and maitre d's, usually stuffy company, stuffy patrons, stuffy wine list, etc.
Even with the early bird menu (which they euphemistically and stuffily call 'prix-fixe'), you leave...Stuffed!Listed in: The Richmond

Wow! I didn't expect this place to be such a winner. I couldn't believe how delicious the food was. I started off with the artichoke and green bean salad - really really good. The balsamic reduction was off the hook and it's a starter that I'm hooked on. For my entree I ordered the Fillet Mignon with Potatoes Au Gratin. When I took my first bite of the Fillet it just melted. I had to share it with my 3 other diners and they all agreed that this was a fine piece of meat executed to the finest. And I just loved the red wine sauce that came with the fillet. So delicious.
The four of us all loved our starters and entrees. We also had a bottle of champagne, cocktails, 3 deserts, after dinner drinks and the bill was about 230.00. You really can't beat that. The food reminded me of Jardiniere, but not the pricepoint. By the way, the deserts we ordered were the floating island, caramelized french toast, and warm chocolate cake. All were amazing. The floating island was something I've never had before, very creative yet simple.
On top of all of the superb food the service was excellent. I love little places like this, wonderful food, good pricepoint, and great service. I hope my next visit is just as wonderful. -

Sacrebleu, this restaurant was fantastique!! My boyfriend (a.k.a. FattyMatty) took me here for my birthday because he knew I love French things :) 5 stars for him!!! Okay, back to the restaurant:
We were seated right away in a cute, romantic little table. The waiters all had fabulous French accents! That makes me happy :) We had a baguette and my boyfriend brought a bottle of wine from Santa Barbara... the service was excellent, of course, and our waiter was always on top of refilling our wine glasses or refolding our napkins. Then, I had the goat cheese salad... which was melt-in-your-mouth-amazing! For the main course we both had filet mignon... I can't even put into words how good it was. Mmm... I was full after a few bites but there was NO WAY I wasn't going to finish the whole thing!! The sauce was perfect, and there were little scallops of potato under the steak.... best meal I've ever eaten, ever!
And then, because it was my birthday, of course I had to have dessert!! :) I was already too full to eat another bite, but I ordered profiterols....MMMMMM omg they were sooo good, I ended up eating the whole thing. Perfect little pastries filled with ice cream and drenched in authentic, rich, French chocolate sauce... I was in absolute heaven.
Incroyable!!Listed in: Food: My Only Weakness.

I can't even remember what we ate because the service was so inexcusably bad it soured the whole meal.
Of course, it was the Saturday before Halloween--I could excuse a little inattention, understanding the kids 'acting as servers' wanted to go out and have fun. But, by 10pm our waitress had actually changed into her costume and was blatantly ignoring her customers...are you kidding me? I was horrified--and it wasn't because of the costume--she was the quintessential playboy bunny.
I have had better service at a Denny's. Come to think of it, I have had better service staring at a wall and picking my nose.
It was as if we didn't exist--yeah, that group of five over there whose orders you screwed up; yeah, those five who've plopped down some cash on multiple bottles of wine; yeah, those five who could walk out without paying and you'd be too busy flirting with the host too even notice...
At one point, I actually walked partially into the kitchen to grab a pitcher of water and refill our glasses myself. I had to take our bill up to their bartender so we could actually pay. It was unbelievable...I'm still waiting to wake up from that nightmare. -

Based on Yelp's review of this place two buddies and myself went for dinner. We did the 4 course meal for $45 each and it was absolutely FABULOUS!
The ambiance is calming, the tables are spread just enough so you don't feel as though the people next to you is eavesdropping. It's relatively comfortable because along the walls it's benched seating. The lights are dimmed just a tad so it's not TOO romantic nor too casual, just right!
The food was very good, it's not perfect, but pretty good. The 4 courses is plenty, and you will find out by the time you reach dessert. The four courses consists of an appetizer, a small entree, main entree and then dessert. I highly recommend the goose fat as the main appetizer, it's SO good! The chef comes out periodically to chat with his customers and the service is very good! It strikes a very balance between too casual and romantic, so you can do both if you wish. The place was packed till 10pm on a weekend night. -

I have walked by Clementine numerous times and have always been curious about what it has to offer. Geoff K loves French food, so we decided to give it a try. It books up so make sure to make a reservation - we still had to wait about 15 minutes though :(
It's definitely a date place - there were lots of couples and a bunch of groups of old people all dressed up. *Highlight* LARGE transvestite in ugly ass stripped pants.
Wine, hors d'oeuvres, viandes and dessert - all were excellent. I had the salad and filet mignon - the meat was prefect and in a rich bordelaise sauce. Salad was a bit bland. He had the foie gras and salmon. FG was yummy and their vanilla creme brulee was good too.
As a nicer restaurant, I wished their bathroom was better. Overall, very good and I would definitely go back to try some new things as well as their pre fix menu.
This place is closed Sundays and parking is hard - good thing I can walk there - and stumble home...Listed in: The IR (no not Infra-Red but…

I love this place, although I don't go as much as I should. I took a date here on her birthday, and we had THE BEST time.
We started off with some appetizers--she the soup, me the mixed green salad. Both were perfect.
For the main course, I had the peppercorn ribeye steak, and she the thyme-tinged baby chicken. Frickin' superb.
We washed it all down with some nice bordeaux, as I recall (a bit fuzzy, since we drank a lot). I do remember the velvety loveliness of it, though.
To top it all off, a friend/aquaintance who works there noticed me and I told him we were there to celebrate her birthday.
When the check came, it wasn't as expensive as it should have been, and then he brought out a nice bottle of wine as an extra gift (this particular lovely lass just LOVES wine)!
The rest of the night was even better...Listed in: Top Restaurants

I had reservations at 8:30 and ended up getting seated at 9 even though we were there FIFTEEN minutes early. And I can't stand slow service and our waiter would disappear for 30 minutes at a time!
Oysters were a little briney and the shell was flaking off, Hog Island's are MUCH BETTER. Also, not to be a pot de creme snob (even though it was nice that we got a complimentary dessert) I thought the pot de creme had an overpowering coffee taste and was undercooked. I've had better Creme Brulee. French Toast was interesting but not amazing either.
Overall rating: MEH!
+1 because Chef Philippe came out and greeted us after dinner personally -

I work near here, and from time to time, I'll drive by and feel the saliva gears cranking up. And it's only 11AM. It's not right. I've avoided going only because I hate to have an idolized experience go to hell in a handbasket. It's happened before, kids. Sad. But there was a day I dared to go, and I was not disappointed.
You see, I'm Filipino, but deep down in my innards, I'm French. French as French can French. I love French things. I swoon at the sight of the Eiffel Tower, even if it's in a newspaper. I have a bachelor's degree in French. French toast? Yah, that too! I'm all over it! So for my birthday, it's all about French food.
I had the halibut, and it was amazing. My aunt and homie went for the steak and frites. Good job, Clementine. I was very impressed. I enjoyed the food and the server was quite a wonderful person. Say what you will about the French, but thems my peoples! The staff was really nice, and friendly too.
Dessert was profiterolles for all, and they did not disappoint! Just like this experience. God, they were amazing. Parking by SF standards is not hard if you know where to park. Closer to Arguello is better. Enjoy it! I'll be back, mes amis. -

Bon voyage, mon amie Erica!
Yesterday, the 7 of us had a lovely dinner to celebrate Erica's journey to San Diego. The staff was really nice considering half the party was 30 minutes late and we had to accomodate an extra person. The food was very good and the restaurant had a cozy feel to it.
I ordered from the special prix fixed menu the soup du jour (potato+leek), filet de tilapia, and the infamous floating island. I didn't like the potato+leek soup, but the tilapia and floating island was fabulous.
The other people in my group ordered rib eye, lamb shank, lamb sirloin, and the salmon - all which were very delish. The mashed potatoes from the rib eye entree weren't that special - it didn't have much flavor. The crab salad had interesting flavors as other reviewers have mentioned. Friends said the mussels were good and the portions were hearty.
Dessert was the best. The floating island consisted of an "island" of whipped egg whites floating on liquidy egg custard and topped with carmelized almonds. One bite was so light, fluffy, and flavorful. The French toast with a side of hazelnut ice cream was yummy as well. Vanilla creme brulee was fab. I would definitely go again to try other items on the menu. -

We showed up at 5:30 sharp on a weekday evening to take advantage of the $25 prix fixe meal. The restaurant was filling up by the time we left an hour and a half later, but was pleasantly quiet throughout our meal. I'm not sure how things would fare during regular hours, what with the tables being so closely spaced together. But maybe the closeness would lend it that Parisien... je ne sais quoi?
Service was quite good, attentive but not overbearing. And yes, all the wait staff are French. It adds another layer of authenticity when you hear them conversing quietly behind the bar during the meal. The Amelie soundtrack playing in the background almost tipped the scales into overkill, though.
The food itself was excellent. Even the free basket of warm, crispy baguette slices deserves mention. I started with the lobster bisque-- rich, creamy, and full of flavor. My entree was a tilapia filet served with a white sauce over asparagus risotto. The rice was perfectly creamy, but i found the fish somewhat lacking in flavor and a touch overdone. The pain perdu dessert more than made up for this, however. I had a hard time choosing it from among the 8-10 other dessert items, all of which sounded equally tempting. Clearly I will be making my way down the list with subsequent visits.
One note: as is usual with French fare, the portions are probably smaller than an American appetite is accustomed to. Those crazy French! But the food is very rich, and I was well satisfied by the end. -

This is a great restaurant. We started with a carrot ginger soup, the escargot, and their amazing bread & butter. The bread was to die for. Perfectly crusty on the outside soft on the inside. The escargot were great as well. My husband, who claimed to dislike escargot, now has a love for Clementine's version. In fact, he asked if we could come back sometime and just eat bread, multiple orders of escargot, and numerous bottles of wine.
We had the Day Boat Scallops and the Fillet Mignon for our mains. The thin strings of fried potato that topped the scallop dish made a wonderful texture contrast to the otherwise creamy soft dish. The Fillet Mignon, however, was the show stopper. It was one of the best we've ever had. Cooked perfectly and the sauce was delicious. And the portions were very filling, something my husband was worried about going to a French restaurant.
The service is wonderful and quick, but not rushed. The atmosphere is nice and intimate. The quality of the ingredients is impeccable. The prices are beyond reasonable for everything you get. My husband and I truly enjoyed our first experience with Clementine and will be back without a doubt for more. -

Every time I think of Restaurant Clementine, I always get a warm and fuzzy feeling. This was the first restaurant my first SF date took me to. He was a real class act, as was the restaurant. It's hidden behind these Clementine trees, amongst all the obnoxious and boisterous Chinese eateries and groceries around Clement. If my wonderful date never took me here, I would have never discovered this glorious French restaurant.
I had the Escargots de Bourgogne au beurre d'ail et persil for an appetizer and Magret de canard rtie, ragut de champignons, navets fnes sauce au foie gras. Yeah, I don't know what that means either, but the menus are generously translated into English. It's so authentic! The wait staff is uber professional with a sexy French accent! I thought they were on another echelon in terms of restaurant service. They were much better than the wait staff at other classy restaurants like Bix or Boulevard.
I made this my 100th review because this was one guy and one restaurant I will never forget. I'm melting away from thinking of that evening. The guy is gone, but the restaurant is still there. Anyone want to repeat this romantic experience with me? * wink * wink * -

3.5 Stars
My mom treated my bf and I to our birthday dinner here. The service was really good (at times) but the food was okay. 4 stars why? The Vanilla Bean Creme Brulee was the best I've ever had. Just like Chapeau! Except I couldn't taste when I had Chapeau! because I was sick.
Boo for being too late for the prix fixe because we basically ordered almost the same things. Oh well! :)
The warm brie appetizer is just like Chapeau's. It is too big for one person! Definitely one that you can share. The fried shrimp appetizer looked pretty good but the bf said it was okay. My mom had the asparagus soup and it was really good!
I had the special of the night, a veal chop. It was pretty good and really tender, It comes with polenta and mushrooms. The sauce was a little too salty for my liking, but the meat was okay if you don't dip it into the sauce too much. My mom had the salmon but I didn't try it, she liked it. The bf had the halibut, but they messed up and brought out monkfish instead. We didn't even notice until the server brought us a halibut, compliments of the chef. Too much fooood! He liked the halibut over the monkfish.
I wanted to try the coffee pot de creme, but couldn't pass up the creme brulee. We were too stuffed, so we only got the creme brulee. I could seriously eat it all day. The vanilla bean really gives it a nutty flavor. YUM!
I'd definitely come back for dessert!
We skipped the wine since it was a Tuesday night. Then again, any reason to drink is a good reason, regardless which day of the week it is! -

UGH, how this place toys with my heart.
I probably rewrote this review about 5 times now. I can go on forever about how we were neglected as a party of 5 with reservations as the elder, probably more successful looking diners around us got their wine, appetizers, and entrees before us despite the fact that we were seated way before them. How does 5 young professional women get some attention around here?! Story of my life. I wont write about how we waited 20 minutes for our bottle of wine or a hour before our entree because these men (seriously, they were all men), redeemed themselves very well.
Our reservation was at 730p on a thursday night and they were very busy--all their tables were full and the 4 waiters were hustling around and running into each other. I was waiting for one of those slow motion moments when shit goes flying everywhere, especially since we were near the kitchen. My favorite was the waiter that had cleared off two baskets of frites and as he was walking towards the kitchen, his free hand started shuffling some of the fries. About 5 feet away from the kitchen, he proceeded to put a few in his mouth. Poor guy probably hasnt had a break yet.
We were also treated with a salmon tartar for the each of us before appetizers. We must've looked visibly disgruntled, or they must've heard my loud mouth asking where the hell our bread was. It was delicious though. Well played Clementine, well played.
Our dishes came out about a hour later. The duck breast was amaazzinngggg. Medium cooked to a bouncey firmness, no visible fat, great portion, and light sauce. It was my first time eating polenta and i loved it. I'm a sucker for creamy textures. I finished off my whole plate without a drop of sauce to spare.
The highlight of my night and possibly the reason why I would go back to Clementine was their french toast with hazelnut ice cream dessert. Oh.Mi.F*cking.Gahd. Once the plate was set in the middle of the five of us, it was a reenactment of nature channel's clip of vultures finding a dead carcus. Ice cream was flying, sauce was dripping, and the plate was gone in 10 seconds. It wasnt too sweet, there was some crunchy caramel in there, the ice cream worked well with the warm, moist bread. kjhfksadf. Oh, excuse me, my fingers slipped on the drool on my keyboard.
The place was visibly emptying as 3 tables were left. Service went up as the waiters got to slow down a bit. When one of our ladies excused herself for the restroom, the waiter came and folded up her napkin. The chef came out and shook our hands and we thanked him for the wonderful meal. My friend specifically thanked him for the french toast as we were still high from it. A few minutes later, spoons were placed in front of us and we asked the waiter what it was for, he shrugged and smiled. About 10 minutes later, another dead carcus landed in the middle of our table and once again, we swormed and devoured another french toast, on the house.
We were there for about 2.5 - 3 hours, in true European fashion. Got to talk to the chef for a little, took a picture with him and our waiter and ended the night with cheek to cheek kisses (remember, left then right, as our New yorker told us).
These men really know how to work what they got. I walked out extremely satisfied and craving for more. I'm teetering between a 4 and a 5 because of the service during rush hour, but I'm sure the experience would be 5-stars and more if the place was more calm. 5 stars for the chef though :) -

I had a great dining experience here with my boyfriend last Friday night. The restaurant is casual, but sophisticated.
The service was impeccable. My wine and water glasses were never empty. Our waitress was very attentive, but not at all overwhelming. I thought the meal flowed at a great pace. The food came out in perfect timing -- I didn't feel rushed to finish, nor did we have to wait in between courses. It was very impressive.
When I looked at the menu, I was a bit disappointed to find out that they had just recently changed it and some of the dishes on their website (i.e the salmon and tuna tartar which I was REALLY looking forward to) were no longer available. I started out my meal with the shrimp marinated in olive oil with garlic and red peppers. It was OK, nothing too outstanding. I am not a fan of red peppers, but the consistancy and flavor of those in this dish complimented the shrimp very well. My boyfriend had the crab salad with mango and grapefruit. Again, I thought it was just ok - nothing too special.
For my entree, I ordered the steak au poivre with shoestring fries. I've had steak au poivre before and was a bit surprised when my dish arrived. Don't get me wrong, it was delicious, but the sauce was not at all what I was expecting. I'm used to a much thicker sauce, while this one was very light. Nevertheless, the seasoning of my rib eye accompanied with the taragon butter pleased my tastebuds. My boyfriend had the seared scallops which were prepared perfectly. The potato and cabbage gratin went very well with the dish as well.
For dessert, we ordered some tea with the profiteroles and pain perdu (french toast). Both were absolutely delightful, but I LOVED the pain perdu with the hazelnut ice cream. The toast was nice and crisp on the outside, yet soft and moist on the inside. I could eat it everyday. It was the perfect ending to the meal.
Overall, I was very pleased with our meal here. It was missing a little something to knock my socks off, but all together everything was delightful. I would definitely recommend it to others. -

C'est magnifique! French pop played quietly in the background of this small, delightful restaurant. The chef and the wait staff were wonderful, accommodating, and of course as charming as only the French can be. My only peeve has to do with the hallways to the kitchen and restroom which took away from the elegant appeal, but only slightly.
A sweet little amuse bouche started off the meal though we couldn't tell if the inside was cheese or a thick sauce...no matter, it did the job and wet our appetite. The warm brie salad was quite popular as the kitchen ran out halfway through the evening, and the Mesclun salad was good but not memorable. The table's favorite however was the blue cheese tart salad enclosed in a pastry shell - and none of us are blue cheese fans!
The entrees were stellar! The monkfish on a bed of risotto was a rich plate of melt-in-your-mouth heaven as was the scallops, the skatewing fish was a plate of savory, grilled goodness, and the vegetarian napoleon dish was beautifully presented and tasted divine - this coming from a proud carnivore! The portions were PERFECT and the chef checked in frequently to make sure we were enjoying.
The bottles of Oregon Syrah went perfectly with all the salads and entrees so I wouldn't hesitate to order it again as an all-around wine.
As for dessert, the standout was the warm Verona chocolate cake...an orgasm with every bite! There were other desserts on the table but I didn't care. Next time I may end with the cheese plate but oh the Verona chocolate ....
The bill was steep so that makes this restaurant a special occasion place as opposed to a neighborhood stop. All in all though, a lovely dining experience I can't wait to repeat.Listed in: Top Restaurants

From first glance, the restaurant seems very out of place with the surrounding bars (especially around St. Patty's day which is when I dined at this fine restaurant). But, the decor, both outside and inside, lends itself to an experience -- that of being transplanted from San Francisco to somewhere in Paris.
Once inside, you cannot mistake the French accents and the frequent merci's spoken by the waiters and patrons who get caught up in the experience. Upon being seated, I became more excited about the authenticity as I heard fluent French being spoken by the patrons from the nearby table.
Before moving on, even though I do have another French restaurant on my list of reviews, I must admit that I'm not a French food connoisseur by any means. French restaurants just seem to inspire me to write reviews.
Back to the meal -- had a sampling of wines (pinot and Riesling), appetizers (escargot and crab salad), entrees (duck and sea bass) and desserts (the "floating island" and raspberry mousse). I was impressed with the presentation of all of the food (even the presentation of the table salt and pepper was unique) and enjoyed the flavors. The best combination that I discovered that night (again, I'm no chef, so this may be common knowledge to many already) was in the crab salad. They served it with slices of pink grapefruit! It was absolutely delectable.
In short, this was an excellent experience. I must underscore that the service was amazing. I would definitely dine here again. -

This is my place when I wanna do French food but don't want to pay French food prices, ya know what I'm saying?
They have this three course prix fix menu that is pretty decent and if there is pork chops or duck on it, then I'm in the zone baby!
Usually like to bring a date here and usually like to sit at the bar 'cause I get to interact with all the interesting people of the inner Richmond. Some of them are burnouts and you can tell after talking to them for like 5 mins. But usually they are pretty interesting folks and it makes for a good time.
I recommend a nice French red wine. -

I brought a girlfriend here for a birthday dinner last Saturday. We meet fairly regularly for lunch but it had been a while since we'd had a chance to sit, chat, gossip, dish without time constraints. Unfortunately, we were asked to leave by the waiter since we were encroaching into the 2nd seating. And here I thought that French restaurants were meant to be several hours long ... It's okay though, not a big deal and I didn't feel rushed through my meal.
I got 2 oysters ... 1 that tasted funny ... but I didn't get sick so it's fine. They weren't very well shucked because I got a lot of grit in my mouth. We also got the mixed greens salad which was pretty standard ... though the grapes were a nice touch. I got the filet mignon for my entree and for all the other hiccups, this was the highlight and redeeming part of my meal. Prepared to perfection and melt in your mouth. I asked for an extra side of au jus but barely needed it because the meat itself was so flavorful.
The waiter convinced us to order a basket of the fries ... they were good, but not so amazing that I'd be swayed into ordering it again. It was also way too much food. For dessert we shared the french toast that came with a scoop of hazelnut ice-cream. It was as the name suggested ... French toast with a scoop of ice cream. Maybe I was expecting more because it was dessert instead of brunch! The service was good and a very warm, jolly and friendly chef who made it a point to say hello and check in on everyone.Listed in: MEAT *grunt grunt*

Wow.
I feel bad about only giving this place three stars but I have had much better "affordable French" in Denver, Seattle, and Chicago. My date and I both had the Steak Frites and I found my steak tough and the frites less than stellar. My ex was big on wine and he made a great choice so I was happy with that.
I do actually enjoy the space, which is clearly modeled after a typical French Bistro. Unfortunately we had a late reservation so the energy I was looking for dwindled to a handful of tables. I will definitely need to keep searching...any recommendations? -

This place is a winner in my books. Awesome French food at reasonable prices. Bon appetit!
Food: 5 stars. Everything was so flavorful and savory, especially the roasted duck breast, which can be hard to pull off. The chef knows his sauces as well. You just can't go wrong with putting something in foie gras sauce or lobster sauce. I wanted to lick the plates clean!
Service: 5 stars. The server was extremely nice and spot-on in her recommendations of dishes to try. Everything she recommended was better than those she did not. I also love the fact that all the servers spoke with French accents (or were just faking it) as it contributed to the overall feeling of dining at a restaurant in Paris.
Atmosphere: 2 stars. Although the place is designed well, the crowd brought me down. The average age of the clientele was 65, no joke. I felt like I was having the early bird special at a Denny's. Although I didn't see any blue-haired ladies, the woman sitting at the next table was sporting a fire-red dye job and heavy blue eyeshadow.
Hits: Sauted day boat scallops in a velout sauce with shredded potato galette and cabbage, Roasted duck breast in foie gras sauce with mushroom rgout and baby turnips, Caramelized French toast with hazelnut ice cream.
Misses: Old people.

I've been going to that particular "spot" for close to 5 years. It's on its 3rd owner/manager/chef whatever the role is. I do not like the recent change.
I gave it 3 stars because the food is actually decent. HOWEVER, the atmosphere is completely vanished. It is no longer French in the sense it was before. There use to be mostly French running the joint. You could speak French there, and you could suspend reality and think you were transported. That was worth a lot. They've flushed the French out and I don't know if there's anyone there that is remotely French. They were very polite, don't get me wrong, no one treated us badly, although the waiters collided with each other next to me at one point and a dish of food narrowly missed me, but no harm done. It's just the whole change is unsatisfying and bland and so unFrenchie that I'm bored bored bored there.
