This is a nice little place hidden in a little mall.  It's not too apparent when you drive by, so watch for the entrance.

Christine always has new interesting creations, so watch out for the tasting menu.  They start out with a complimentary mini soup, which is nice.  Usually, I stick to the small plates (again), but the last time I was there I actually had a meal.  Had seafood pasta and the person I was with had the Cioppino.  Both were excellent and we were stuffed.  Menu has some staples that continue (check the website), but there always seem to be new creations.

The Happy Hour is good and relaxed.  The $5 drinks and small plates are unusual and have good presentation.

Overall, this is an intimate place that serves very good food and interesting drinks.  If I had the opportunity, I'd really like to try the cooking classes.  I might actually learn something.

If you haven't tried this place, you should.  If you have and are on the fence, go back.  I know I will.

Okay, so apparently their lunch experience is nothing like their dinner one.  At lunch, you don't even get bread before the meal, not to mention no teacup of soup or post-meal honey tea.  My brother said they must have been suffering budget cuts, too.  Ha ha.

But seriously, what used to be my favorite place on the planet has become just another restaurant for me.  Not only was I disappointed with lunch today (and I ordered the formerly infallible crayfish & avocado tower), I don't even feel I need to go back.

Oh, and if you sit outside on the patio, you become totally forgotten.  Not even a water refill.

From favorite restaurant to leaving a bad taste in my mouth.  Sad.

Adieu, Christine.

Came here for happy hour yesterday, $5 at 5. Their happy hour menu is really good and the waiter told us that it changes often. The portions are very generous and there is a good variety of plates to choose from. I got the baby scallop risotto, chicken tagine, and braised lamb strogneoff, yes that's a ton of food, but for only $5 a plate why the heck not. The best dish out of those three was the risotto. Also, for those who are wondering about their drink specials you can order any premium drink you can think of and it'll only be $5.

Happy hour is from 5 - 6:30

Despite its location in a strip mall, Restaurant Christine delivers interesting and scrumptious meals in an elegant and classy atmosphere.  The menu is a quirky mix of Asian-fusion dishes, Southwestern cuisine, and good ole American.

Let's start with the food.  Upon ordering, we were served a small complimentary portion of black bean soup.  It was delicious, velvety, and full of flavor.  Next came the appetizers.  The Ahi sampler was terrific.  My favorite was probably the poke.  Delish!

The warm mushroom salad consisted of portabella, shitaake, and button mushrooms over a bed of greens in a flavorful sherry vinaigrette.  I wasn't a huge fan of the bizarre mushroom custard that accompanied the salad though.

Now for the entrees!  The BF ordered the thick-cut pork chop in a chile cream sauce.  It was amazing.  I could totally eat the sauce alone by the spoonful!   It came with cilantro rice (yummy!) and three tiny pork enchiladas.  My shrimp stuffed chile relleno was good, but not great.  I spent the rest of the evening jealously eyeing my BF's pork chop (and no, that's not a euphemism!  Haha).

The service was exceptional.  Although our server had a full restaurant, she managed it with grace and aplomb.  She never looked harried or stressed and she glided through the room effortlessly.  As a former server myself who has been through many a stressful dinner rush, I was indeed impressed.

Stopped here for dinner with the kids. The restaurant is too nice for 4 1/2 year olds. And taking care of the kids is always a handful by myself.

I realized on this day that I am not a big fan of fusion food. I don't care what you fused, it always seem to lack any kind of identity or character. I ordered pear & blue cheese salad and duck prepared three different ways. The kids ordered off the tasting menu. Lastly, a bottle of pinot.

The salad was delicious. The dressing was lemon based but the tartness worked very well with the sweetness of the pear. Some bites with the blue cheese also worked very well with the dressing. The duck dish came with 5 medallions in a curry like sauce, two pieces prepared like sushi. The pieces were deep fried so the crispiness on the outside worked very well with the texture of the rice. The third was duck liver pate over two pieces of bread. I thought the food was very interesting and good. But like I said before, realized that I am not fusion kind of guy.

I encourage everyone to try this place.  The restaurant is very quaint and cute tucked away in a strip mall.  The food is good, the price is high, wine list is so so, ...... no fusion for me.  Great service from Bob.  He let me take the rest of the wine home.

I'm a simple girl. Feed me a burrito and that will give you 5 stars haha.

This is a local gem in Torrance and one of the few higher end restaurants in the city.

The food, I give it a 3. The service bumps it up an extra star. Service is great, friendly, attentive and knowledgeable. I got the Pappardelle Pasta, which was good with a mushroom base cream sauce (I think it tasted like mushrooms @  least). My only gripe was the long noodles which was messy to eat. I also tried the  Filet Mignon, which was very good. Dessert was great, small but rich and satisfied my sweet tooth @ the end. I've also dined in for a banquet and I thought it was great allowing the guests choices from appetizers to dessert.

Lan told me to check this place out a while ago.  I guess he finally got fed up waiting for me to go, so he took me!

Going in, I was a bit nervous about the "sauce-heaviness" some people described.  Glad to say that it wasn't a problem.  To start, they served a little cup of tortilla soup.  It had goaty after notes.  We split the Asian trio appetizer - it was okay, but I'd get something else next time.  Lan had the pork chops - amazing!  Glad he let me try some.  I went for the 4 course tasting menu - canteloupe soup to start!  Wow!  It was a strangely good experience.  I could totally see it as a dessert soup, and yet it had a bit of savoriness to it as well.  I also had escargot, just to finally say I've eaten snails.  The scallops were excellent, and the profiterole dessert....  It was covered with chocolate sauce, and it WASN'T THAT OFF THE SHELF BOTTLED STUFF!  Thank goodness!  One of my biggest restaurant dessert pet peeves is when they use something like Hershey's chocolate syrup as chocolate sauce.  (Anyplace that does that isn't fine dining!)  Happily, this sauce was the real deal, and I scraped up and savored every last bit of it!

I think the waiter thought me odd for doing this, but... I actually found that each course was a bit more than I could finish, so I ended up taking home a tiny bit of everything.  Except the dessert.

There were so many tempting menu choices, that I'll eventually have to go back to try them.

Hadn't been to Christine for a few years, and a friend suggested we all go spur of the moment on Saturday night. Now I know why we hadn't returned. The evening started on bad footing, with our server being not very cordial and unhelpful, telling us that "everything is good, depending on your tastes and mood." Well, no kidding?!?! Depending on my tastes, I might like McDonald's! She did warm to us when we shared our PlumpJack Merlot.

We ordered appetizers, including the Asian sampler, which included seared ahi, chilled shrimp, deep fried sushi rolls, calamari. The fried things were cold and soggy. When we politely complained to our server, she defensively, patronizingly informed us that the shrimp and ahi were supposed to be cold. We said the fried foods were cold, and she grudgingly took them back. When replaced, the calamari was hot, but still soggy, and the fried rolls were just eh. Oh, and our server informed us that their calamari was not supposed to be crisp, that's how they prepare it. Hmmm, the menu describes the dish as "crispy calamari". The lobster mac n cheese - pasta was gummy, overcooked, without much flavor. My mother-in-law enjoyed it; she likes very bland unseasoned food.

Entrees -
My brick chicken was delicious, tender, moist, full of flavor.
Cioppino was very good, lots of fresh fish and seafood. Good flavor, a little on the thick, stewy side, rather than brothy.
Duck 3 ways - over sauced, as were other dishes. Sauces on the fish and duck were very sweet, essentially covering and disguising the dishes, rather than being under the food, as a condiment.  I suppose the sweet is the Asian factor in the fusion, but Asian food has subtle flavors, with the sauces not overpowering the food.  When the quality and freshness of the product is there, it doesn't need to be hidden!

Desserts - Like entrees, way over-sauced and sweet. The bread pudding was served on a deep pool of caramel sauce. The sauce overwhelmed the gooey, gloppy bread pudding. It was more "pudding" than bread, without any texture remaining.

Not going back soon.....

Now I know why this is my mom's favorite restaurant. The location is somewhat discreet, as it is almost hidden in ivy, so the locals treasure it. Thanks to the power of Yelp, you too can hear about and enjoy one of the best restaurants in the South Bay (or Los Angeles& San Francisco for that matter).

I have heard (and now experienced) that the staff is nice and professional. The owners are especially concerned that people have a pleasant dining experience here. Because it was Mothers Day, they treated all moms to a complimentary glass of champagne.

We started out with a mushroom soup that they give each table. Hands down, one of the BEST soups of my life. That pretty much set the tone for the rest of the food. We split the Maine Lobster Salad (it's pretty big) for an appetizer and I ordered the Sesame Glazed Atlantic Salmon (Green Tea Sticky Rice, Pea Shoots, Fruit Salsa, Carrot-Ginger Sauce) and my mom had one of the daily specials which involved Fennel and some sort of fish.

We took the pops home a bread pudding which he devoured. This is one of my favorite desserts and it was one of the BEST I've had. If you want 5 star food at a nice, cozy restaurant that lacks the pretentiousness common with many restaurants that serve food of this caliber, then Christines is for you. I guarantee this will be one of the best meals of your life. It's damn good!

It's a cute little restaurant with just OK food.  The food did not impress my friends and I.  I ordered the macademia nut encrusted seabass with purple mashed potatoes.  The seabass was just OK and the purple mashed potatoes did not taste good.  The desserts looked better than they tasted.

The soup and after dinner tea was definitely delicious.  Too bad they came in such tiny cups.

My friends and I decided on this restaurant based on reviews on Yelp.  We had somewhat high expectations for the food but was disappointed.

The flavors of the dishes were not impressive.
Dessert can best be described as..."tepid."
The ambiance was mumbo-jumbo and the layout was cramped.

But one thing we really enjoyed was the after dinner tea.

While we were on a quest for fusion joints,
we found this hidden place on Hawthorne.

Many of the dishes are very original, innovative, yet they still have a hint of home made cooking that makes you feel warm.

Although a bit pricy at times, I would recommend this to those who enjoy something different!

I'm not sure if it is still on the menu, but the "Avocado Tower" was a delight to see, have smashed and served infront of you...

This Mediterranean venue is a definite gem and yet only discovered by locals in the area.  Their menu is creative and tasteful, it's a new experience each time I visit and I am a loyal customer when I need to think of a place that is quaint, cozy, charming and nice.  It's a great place for an intimate dinner with friends and loved ones.  They also provide cruises during the summer for their culinary classes in Europe and it's about a week long if you're interested in learning how to replicate their menu.

What I remember most of this place would be there sample soup of the day, grilled flat iron steak, braised shortribs, grilled tiger shrimp and sea scallops, asian grazling sampler and crayfish avocado tower.  Delectable! =)

My favorite dishes are Pappardelle Pasta and Barolo Braised Boneless Beef Shortribs. Every server I've had has been nice and very personable. Jen, the bartender, is also great! She knows how to make my favorite drink just right, raspberry lemon drops!

This is fine dining in an unlikely location, a small business park in Torrance.  What might make this restaurant worth the expense to you (for a starter and entree, expect to pay upwards of $50 per person) is the recognizable sense you get that these dishes were conceived and prepared by a master chef who cares as much about taste as about food presentation.  I've tried their filet mignon, pasta, seafood, soups and salad, and everything has been superb.

The restaurant is small, "intimate" or claustrophobic, depending on your point of view--a lot of tables, that is, crowded into a very finite space.  But the friendly and unpretentious staff more than make up for the fact that you can hear every word of the conversation at neighboring tables should you care to tune in.  Usually after you order your waiter will bring you a small thimblefull of steaming home-made soup as a complimentary starter to help you bear the wait (which is ordinarily not too long) for your food.

This place is rated top restaurant in the Zagat book for good reason.   I'm only rating based on the food because the decor isn't so amazing.

I wasn't too hungry but had some lamb strips and spinach salad.   Both items sound boring, plain, and not so impressive until you put that food into your mouth.

My tastebuds were going through the good kind of shock from the amazing flavours my brain couldn't recognize.  The last time I felt like it was when I had the garlic mashed potatoes at Campanile and some Assorted Mezze platter at The Little Door.    Basically, it's not so hard to have a lot of good food, but it's extremely hard to have food that stays in your memory and drills a hole and leaves an impression.

There was a dude sitting alone eating beside us and he apparently drives from Los Angeles to Torrance just to eat their food.  Yeah, that's  'nuff said about how good the place must be for this guy to drive alone in his car for 30 minutes, sit alone in a crowded restaurant where people are canoodling each other or celebrating some birthday, and eat alone all by himself on a 2 person table.  I'm sure he has friends (hopefully) but really, we all have to admit there have been those few desperate times we eat alone because the food is just sooooo good you DONT CARE if ppl might think you are a loner.  And he told us everything he's tried has been amazing.

5-star for my tongue tingling experience.
4-star if I were to incorporate the decor.
But imma give it 5 star cuz I can.

Blah.

The bread was soft, the tomato starter nice, but the entree?  Blah.  I wasn't too hungry, so I ordered the filet mignon pasta with mushrooms and sun-dried tomatoes, and I didn't taste a thing.  The noodles were overcooked and hard to eat in the very thin cream sauce.  Friends shared crepes for dessert which was really heavy on the syrup.  Heard the lamb was good, and the other dinners looked interested.  The pasta was deserving of less than one star.

Nice ambiance.  A girl in our party kept oggling the dessert fires behind me, but I had a bad view of the show.  I wanted to try the pumpkin bread pudding, but I was too full.  It's a shame too, because I don't plan on returning.

I've been here twice now and I have to say that I was mildly disappointed. don't get me wrong, the food was solid, very flavorful, great service, and tasty drinks, but there was nothing spectacular about the food.

i started off with the ahi tuna which was actually not that great, sorta bland and maybe cooked a bit too much for my taste. the lamb osso bucco was much better with a nice flavorful sauce/tender meat and the risotto that came with it was cooked just right. i will definitely be back and give an update.

I've lived in Torrance for ten years and had read good things about Christine's.  But I visited their website and was never really thrilled with the sample menu they had posted.

However, the wife and I finally decided to give it a try and were thrilled that we did. The menu was much more robust than what is online and they had a variety of specials as well. I honestly don't recall what we had - it's been a while - but felt I had to chime in here as Christine's definitely deserves the recognition.

I wish I could offer a bit more insight on what the menu offered, will update after my next visit... can't wait to go back. I'm kicking myself for waiting so long to try Christine's... kind of like the way I feel about not getting a dvr sooner than I did.

Friends generously got me a gift certificate to dine here and I'm glad I had a chance to try the food!

I remember we were offered a little taste of salmon bisque before ordering. My dinner companion got the Kobe steak and I got a seafood dish. (Sorry, I'm yelping for places in the past to try and remember as much as possible which in some cases, isn't too much at all!). I remember both was delicious though!

After dinner, we were offered a basil and herb based digestive that was pleasant tasting AND did help you feel a bit more able to...well...digest!

Service was indeed top notch. It was noticeably good!
The servers came by and checked on you as though they genuinely cared for your dining experience to be excellent. Our drinks were filled often and unobtrusively.

Service: 3.5 stars
Ambiance:  3.5 stars
Food (purely on taste): Average - 3 stars
Food (base on the price you pay): Overpriced - 2 stars

It's more important to me that the food is good, thus, I feel I am  being generous by giving Restaurant Christine a 3 stars.

I already forgot what I had for starter, so it probably is just average. For entree, I had white fish (forgot what) and it was very dry. For dessert, we've the cream brulee (average) and chocolate cake (too sweet).

I probably will not go back.

After moving from the west side (Marina Del Rey) where there's one fantastic restaurant after another...to the Palos Verdes area, I thought it would be difficult to find any great restaurants nearby (excluding the amazing Japanese/sushi places in the area).

Restaurant Christine is charming, but also has a contemporary flair.  Great service from everyone.  Fantastic food!  Don't let the online menu deceive you into thinking that they don't offer too many choices.  They also have a tasting menu with optional wine pairings (half or full glasses) and several specials each day.

I had the monster-sized lobster salad that I shared because it's a huge meal by itself.  It's tastier than the lobster salad at Crustacean (BH-area), but at more than half the price.  The main course was one of their specials that night.  Duck Three Ways.  Pretty freakin' amazing.  By that time, I was stuffed and had no room for dessert.

Would go back again for special occasions.

Christine's is a great hidden spot for dinner.  Being an Angeleno, I am rarely in the South Bay but when I am here, Christine's is always a good choice.  Hidden away in a quaint shopping plaza (look for Christmas lights) Christine's offers up great yummy yummy food.  I had the rack of lamb - really tender and juicy with the perfect side pairings.  I also had the filet medallions wrapped in proscuitto.  Yum.  I am usually against steak served with anything else but Christine's did it well.

Try to snag a seat upstairs where it is a bit more quiet and less foot traffic.

Try it out!

This restaurant is rather a surprise in little old Torrance...  very tiny and fancy, I ate here for my welcome lunch at my new job, and while we were ordering, my hosts pointed out some Abercrombie models at the next table!  For people who work in Torrance but are used to the finer things and have to slum it in the South Bay, Christine must be such a relief.

The calamari here was divine, and I don't usually go for calamari.  The spicy southwest chicken salad ended up a bit too spicy, but otherwise good, and the shallot vinaigrette almost made up for the spiciness.

Christine is also one of the gourmet Torrance restaurants that offers monthly themed cooking classes at pretty reasonable rates, which make wonderful gifts... hint hint.

My friends and I went to Christine for my birthday! For all of us, it was our first time, and the wait staff was so understanding when one of the group was running late.  The food was great!  I was fine with the portion I had of my fish, but one of my friends was a little disappointed at the portion of her ravioli...she thought it was a little small in comparison to the price.  My husband had the cioppino - a huge portion and the broth had a very comforting taste to it.  Overall though, we had a wonderful experience at Christine. Great food, wonderful service.  I do have to second Beth's opinion of the calamari...it was divine!

Next time we hope to go back on Mondays, which are tapas nights.

Excellent! What is lacks in pretense, Christine makes up for in flavor, quality and wine list. Everything is perfect but my personal favourite is the warm mushroom salad. Try to split it if you have it as your lunch as it is huge. A glass of wine (or 3) is an absolute requisite at dinner as well.

I always have a good time when I come here. The food is delicious, although not inspiring, while the chef does put a great menu together. I've never been displeased with anything I've ordered. The ambiance isn't stuffy but relaxed, and it's not as loud as a place this small and packed may seem. The prices are very fair: $$$ range with alcohol, $$ w/out. There aren't many dining options on the hill, so this is one of the only nice restaurants around and I'd confidently recommend it.

I only went to this joint once.  I thought it was gonna be off da hinges since it got such rave reviews.  But... it was aight.  The food was good, but I didn't find it extraordinary to justify the cost.  I didn't have any problems with the food or service.  I just felt a little let down since I drove an hour to try this place.  It just also happened to be the last place I went on a date with a this smokin' hot chick I dated.  What a disaster.

Update August 2008.

Went back to give it a 2nd chance.  Not impressed.  I guess some people would rather pay for hype than good food or good service.

I am changing my rating from 2 stars down to 1.  If the prices were on par with the quality ($15-$20 per person would be reasonable for this "average" place), then it might be a 2.  At these prices, it's a 1.  I don't mind spending $$$, I have been to many 5 star worthy restaurants, but the quality has to be there, and it's NOT.

My original review is below:

Disappointing.  Several people recommended Restaurant Christine, and my girlfriend and I were anxious to try it.

The service was great, and I like the ambience.  But what good is that with bad food?  We had the "3 kinds of tuna" appetizer, which the menu said was "A" grade tuna.  It was clearly not fresh tuna.  The seared tuna was basic, no better than I would expect at a chain restaurant.  The poke was below average, and the tempura tuna would have been good if the fish was fresh.....but it wasn't.

The people at the table next to us were raving about the short rib, and the waitress recommended it also, so I decided to order it.  What I received was a major disappointment, a bad piece of overcooked meat smothered in some lousy gravy to mask the meats lack of flavor/quality.  Oh, I'm sorry, since Christine is a gourmet restaurant, it was "sauce", not "gravy".  But either way, it was a lousy piece of $2 meat swimming in "sauce".  I would have been disappointed if it was the $5.99 special at Coco's or fresh from the buffet at Circus Circus.

My girlfriend had the salmon, which was overcooked.  It had some sort of yellow "sauce" on the plate, and we both agreed that the sauce was awful.  She at the part of the salmon that was not infected with the sauce, but left more than half of the fish uneaten because the sauce was just that bad.  And she loves salmon, and usually has nothing against a sauce, this sauce was just fowl.

Based on this one experience, and the $100 check for dinner for two, I think this place is WAY overrated.  Maybe we just went on a "off night"?  But highly rated gourmet restaurants in this price range are not supposed to have "off nights", at least not this far off.

I'm willing to try it again, but we will order something completely different.  If my next experience is similar to my first, I'll be changing my rating from a 2 down to 1.

if this restaurant were to be on college, fillmore, or shattuck, this place would probably, be a 2.5.  however, quaint, little restaurant christine, deserves 4, for its much-needed place in not-so-exciting, middle-class torrance.

my osso buco with risotto was tasty and tender, and the tomato soup amuse bouche, bread, and tea "palate cleanser" was much appreciated.  the crepe was a bit too sweet an syrupy for my tastes, but the attentive service bumped restaurant christine to a 4.

that said, i will continue to keep my eye out for more fine dining in the area!

Mmmm... I got the brick flattened chicken with garlic mashed potatoes and asparagus ($23). Contrary to other reviews, the portion was HUGE and my whole family was wtfing at it. The sauce was soooo good, some kind of creme brulee butterscotchish yummyness.. I wanted to lick my plate! Dad got pork chops and mexican rice that looked delish and HUGE, mom got lamb chops that were cooked to perfection, and auntie got a fish dish that I didn't try. Everyone was happy with their food. The menu is small but all their offerings seem sophisticated and tempting.
Before the meal they gave us a sample of their tomato soup to dip our bread in and a shot of their ginger tea "to cleanse the palett" after the meal. Food is pricey but I found the portions to be just right and service to be friendly (although it did take a while for the food to come) and the atmosphere pleasant. Christine is a gem in the south bay!

Restaurant Christines Catered our last party.  We didnt want a huge sitdown thing, but with 65 guest, its way too much to deal with on our own.   THE CATERING STAFF WAS FANTASTIC!!!  Having planned MANY events, I can say hands down that the service & staff professionalism was the BEST I have ever encountered.  Even as the guests over-indulged at the bar, the staff couldnt have been better.  The food was FANTASTIC & I gave conact info out to at least 5 guests.  When the guests ask who did the food, you know you have a winner.

Its always a great experience to eat in the Restaurant as well; the quality of the food & the service never disappoints.

I want to give it 3.5 stars.

I wasn't totally impressed with the food.  I ordered shrimp and scallops - I love grilled food.  It was pretty good, but nothing spectacular.  Another in my party ordered the cioppino - that was good, but I feel like the soup could have been slightly thicker and creamier, and the fish in it was really flaky.  It was served in a MASSIVE bowl and could easily feed two people.

Another in my party ordered clam chowder - it was unlike any clam chowder I've eaten (in a good way).  Peppery, which I like.  But too liquidy.

Service was good, and it's a very cute restaurant.

My review of this location will be limited by the fact that I was there for a business dinner and the menu was pre-set.  I also did not get to experience the  service as we were in the side dining room.  Wine was provided so I didn't get to see the wine list.  And since it was a sponsored dinner I didn't have to pay, so I'm not sure of the prices either.  Basically this review is worthless.  Except that I can comment on the food.  The food was pretty darn good.  My entree was prosciutto wrapped filet mignon with red onion butter.  I normally like my meat red, juicy, and sauce-free, but this time all the accompaniments blended well with the flavor of the steak.  Beneath all of the extras, I could still taste the meat and get my beef fix.  Also, the desert was crazy good.  I will not reveal what I ate for dessert because I don't want them to run out prior to my next visit.
