Husband man and I stayed here this weekend.  We arrived late on Friday, driving in, and checked in with a very helpful and cheerful lady, who I think could tell we were super tired (2 hours waiting for the effing ferry).  She directed us to our room... down the hall and to the right.  We walk in, and find a big room, with a two person jetted jacuzzi tub.  Great down duvet cover on the bed and a patio to the outside.

Everyone who worked here was very pleasant and helpful.  The resort restaurants, Fireside and Harbormaster, were very good, although quite expensive.  That is to be expected though with any hotel restaurants, so no shock here.

Good place for a weekend get-a-way... very beautiful and quiet.

My notes from September 11, 2004

When we arrived, we found a very nice room with a big jetted bathtub, complete with Rubber Ducky and Fly. The bath had a window into the main room, and it was so large that there were two chairs at the end of the bed facing the TV & fireplace with room to walk around them. There were also very nice sheets, but unfortunately, wretched pillows. If you visit, make sure to take your own from home, they are that bad. In fact, I can't remember ever having slept on a worse pillow.

During the night, it was POURING RAIN. We had the window open, and it was loud. But it didn't last very long.

The continental breakfast which came with the room was an odd affair. The night before, you had to make a choice of 4 options, none of which I would have chosen normally. But hey, it was technically "free" and so I was able to start off the day with the most important meal, even more than I normally take.

It's the pillow that made this only 4 stars. But I plan on returning again and again... I'll just take my own!

Update: We returned to Port Ludlow and were saddened to discover that very few rooms actually have nice pillowtop beds. We had to change rooms in hopes of finding a bed that didn't make us feel run over by a train when we awoke. Alas, we were unsuccessful.  The rubber duckies have even deserted the hot tubs. Therefore, I demoted my 4 star rating to 3.

This review is only for the Fireside and Harbormaster restaurants.  I have never stayed in the rooms at the resort.

Last weekend my wife and I and two other couples stayed at our family condo in Port Ludlow.  Friday night we stayed in and made our dinner so Saturday night we decided to go out.  We tossed around Ajax, which is always a hit but requires a drive or cab, and Harbormaster, which we've done before with generally mediocre results.  This time we decided to try the Fireside in the resort.  I protested but it made the most sense and based on the prices it seemed like it must be somewhat good.  That couldn't be further from the truth.

We were seated and served by a delightful young man named Geoff who was a class act the entire evening.  We are a loud(er) and more raucous group than most but he clearly enjoyed the change and energy.

We started with some nice wine and the steamed clams.  The wine is what you order - no surprises.  The clams were fine but not noteworthy.  The broth was tasty for dipping, especially since we were pretty hungry.  The group ordered a good variety of dishes off the menu, including two of the $30+ fillet mignon and the salmon.  I got the seafood plate with prawns, dungeoness crab and scallops on a bed of risotto.

First, the food took forever.  It took so long that Geoff brought out another bottle of wine on the house.  When the food showed up it took one look, not even bite, to realize something was very wrong.  The fillets were cut like butterflied pork chops.  What?  Since when are they EVER served like that.  It's no surprise that after tasting them it was clear they were in fact a disaster.  Possibly the worst fillet I've ever tasted - thankfully it wasn't my dinner.  The salmon, a northwest staple and something a nice restaurant should be able to cook in their sleep, was so overdone I thought it was jerky.  In a word, ruined.  My dish wasn't bad but it wasn't great either.  For $32 I figured I would at least be impressed with my seafood.  The prawns, crab and scallops were fresh although not prepared very well.  The risotto was hard and undercooked.  The general consensus around the table was that this food was bad and poorly prepared and truly a crime at the prices they charge.

On the bright side, we explained to Geoff how we felt about his excellent service and were then candid about the food.  He appreciated the feedback and returned with our check.  He happily removed the salmon and both fillets and explained that the executive chef had left hours before and relied on his line chefs to handle the rest of the evening.  Really?  On a Saturday night at 8 the executive chef is gone?  That is a travesty and certainly explains why the meal was a disaster.

Short of the manager showing up on our condo doorstep to ask us in for a complimentary meal, we will never return.  The real bummer is that it's walking distance from our place.  I'm sure if they fix the chef issue it could be a nice restaurant but right now it's disappointment waiting to happen.

So we leave dinner and stroll up to the Harbormaster bar at around 10:30 Saturday night.  The place is pretty packed and there's a keyboard player and singer keeping the dancefloor lively.  We walk up to the bar to order a round of drinks and before we even get there some other patrons are grumbling about how they've stopped serving.  Sure enough, at 10:00 on a Saturday with live entertainment and a crowd all wanting to spend money they made last call.  Completely inexplicable and frustrating for more than just our group.  I guess they deserve credit for consistently deplorable management across both of their restaurants.  Money?  No thanks.  We'd rather send you away disgruntled and close up early.  Baffling.
